"XYZ(eXtraYearsofZest),the SeniorCitizengroupatFirstBaptist ChurchHowe,receivedencouragementfromPastorRogerTidwellat theFebruarymeetinglastweek. The groupmeetsmonthlyonthethird Thursdayat10:30inFellowship Hall. Afterashortbusinessmeeting, thereisaprogrampresentedbefore thelunchatnoon.
Thismonththechurch'sownpastor ofmorethan30years,RogerTidwell,sharedmuchinformationfacts,statistics, trends,andtriviathathelpedthose attendingtounderstandthepremises ofchurchgrowth. Knowingthat Howechurches,community,and schoolswillbegrowingbecauseof thenaturalandobviousmovefrom thesouthtothenorthwithHowein thatpathway,itiseasytoseethat preparationmustbemadeforthat growth. Manyofthechallenges werebroughttothemembers'attentionanddiscussed.
Whilerememberingthatwebuildon anddon'tdisregardpastsuccesses, RogeremphasizedthatwearetransitioningtowhoFBCHowewillbe andthereforeweneedtolearnwhat Godwantsdone,howGodwantsit done,andwhenGodwantsit done. Allourchurchplanningneeds tobeaccordingtoGod'swill,andin God'stiming.

“Parents’lastwords.”
Thetruthis,wedon’talwaysknow whatourkidsaredoingorhowthey actwhenwe’renotaround.Weguide them,teachthem,lovethem,andtry ourbest butwecan’tbewiththem everymoment.Itcanbetemptingto judgeparentsbasedontheirchildren’schoices,butmostofusare trulydoingthebestwecan.Instead ofassumingtheworst,thisisatime tobedefendersofparents.
Childrenandteensarestilllearning andgrowing.Theirbrainsaredeveloping,theirjudgmentisforming,and sometimestheymakedecisions withoutfullyunderstandingtheconsequences notoutofbadintent,but becausetheyareyoungandinexperienced.Lovingthemthroughthat stageisn’talwayseasy,butitmatters. Andextendingthatsamegraceto theirparentsmatterstoo.
We’vebeenstuckathomewithkids thisweek,andsomeofusarebarely survivingmentally.Inourhouse we’vespentthetimesleeping, watchingmovies,sledding,doing randomartprojects,andevencomingupwithafewbusinessideas shouldwegetadventurous.I’m gratefulourfamilyhasbeensafe, warm,fed,andprotectedthroughthis
snowfest.
Iknowseveralfamilieshavenot beensolucky.Teensandchildren goingouttoplayandnotreturning homeisoneofthesaddestandmost tragiceventsIcanimagine.Asparents,Iknowweareallfeelingit.We watchourownkidsandhopeand praytheirdecisionsdon’tendtheir lives.Butwecanonlydosomuch.
Ithinkoneofthebestthingswecan doisloveourfamiliesandhave compassionforthosewhohavelost lovedones.Accidentshappen,and parentsdon’tneedourjudgment. Theyneedourloveandourdefense becauseitcouldjustaseasily havebeenourfamily.
Neversaynever.Wecan’tcontrol everyaspectofourlives,letalone ourchildren’s.Wedothebestwe canandshowcompassionwhenaccidentshappen.
Somanyprayersandsympathyfor thosewhosekidsdidnotreturn home.Pleasebekind.
BackyardBirdwatching Sue and Dick Malnory
WhenweturnedthepagetoFebruary onourSongbirdsofNorthAmerica wallcalendar,thebirdshownforthe monthistheCedarWaxwing,notable forsleekgrayandbrownplumage,a headcrest,blackmaskandaplump bodywithuprightposture. Ifyouhave shrubsortreeswithberries,thishandsomeguywillswoopthroughyour yardandpicktheplantsclean,from falltoearlyspring.Theyflockduring winterinopenwoodsandareaswhere fruitisplentiful.AccordingtoornithologistDavidSibley,theirnamecomes fromtheirloveofEasternRedcedar,or juniperberries. The“Wax-wing” comesfromthewaxyredspotsonthe wingtips. Theirbillsareadaptedfor pickingwholefruitsorberries. Cedar Waxwingsmaybecomeintoxicated wheneatingoverripeorfermented berries.
Bluebirdshavebeenusingourheated birdbathduringtherecentcoldspells, andcheckingoutoneofthenestboxes inthepasture,aswellasanunused Martinhouse. Wehopetheydon’t chooseitfortheirnestasitoffersno protectionfromHouseSparrowsor predators. Nestboxlocationandprotectionfrompredatorsarecriticalto successwithBluebirds.

TheBluebirdpopulationdeclinedin the1900’s.Bluebirdsusedtonestin cavitiesinfenceposts,butaccording totheUSDAWildlifeHabitatInstitute,asmetalTpostscameintouse, availablenestinghabitatdeclined; additionally,HouseSparrowsand Starlingswereintroducedandcompetedfornestingspots.Pesticidesreducedthefoodsupply.
NowBluebirdsareback,mainly thankstohuman-madenestboxes.
TexasHistoryMinute Sometimesthe mendismissed fortheirfailures earlyinlifecan becomethe greatestsuccesses. Thestoryof R.L.Thorntonis thestoryofa manraisedinpovertyandwithbarely aneighthgradeeducationbecamesynonymouswiththesuccessofDallasin the1950s.
RobertLeeThorntonwasbornin 1880inHamiltonCounty,justwest ofWaco. Hisparentswerefarmers. In 1887,thefamilyhadtheirlandstolen fromtheminatitledispute. Asaresult,theylostabsolutelyeverything andwereleftindeeppoverty.
TheymovedtoEnnis,just southofDallas,wheretheyoung Thorntonhelpedthefamilybypicking cottonandtakingwhateverworkhe couldfind. Asaresult,hiseducation wassporadic,andhequitschoolafter theeighthgrade. Hecontinuedto workoddjobsuntilhewashiredasa storeclerk.
Determinedtomakesomething ofhislife,Thorntonattemptedtorestarthiseducationbytakingabusiness courseinDallas. Afteronecourse, around1904,hetriedhishandatsales, becomingatravelingsalesman inOklahomaforacandycompany. Hissuccesswaslackluster,sohe triedtostarthisownbusiness. Thornton’sfirstattempt,astationerybusiness,foldedquickly. He quicklystartedamortgagecompany, butit,too,failed.
Thorntontriedagainin1916, startingabankwithtwootherpartners. Thorntonservedaspresidentof theDallasCountyStateBank,laterthe MercantileNationalBank,for30 years. Thebankfoundearlysuccess bycapitalizingonanewtypeofconsumerloanforbankers–automobiles. Americahadfalleninlovewith thecarbythe1920s,and Thorntonbecameanimmensesuccess bybecomingoneofthefirstNorth Texasbankerstooffercarloans. Soon, otherbusinesseswereaskinghimto serveasanexecutivewiththeirbusinessesaswell.
By1933,thebusinesscommunityhonoredhimbynaminghimpresidentoftheDallasChamberofCommerce. Hewasintenselyactive inDallascivicaffairs,servingwith manycharitableorganizations. He helpedbringthe1936TexasCentennialExposition toDallas’sFairParkarea,addingpermanentexhibitstothearea. From 1945to1960,healsoservedaspresidentoftheTexasStateFair.
In1952,attheageof72, Thorntonwasreadyfornewadventure asheranforDallasmayor. Already knownas“Mr.Dallas”forhismany accomplishmentsforthecity,hewon theelectioneasily.
ThoughDallasandneighboringFortWorthwereintensebusiness rivalsatthistime,theneedforamodernhighwayconnectingthebusiness districtsofthetwogrowingcitieswas clear. Thorntonpushedthroughthe Dallas-FortWorthTurnpike,which laterbecameInterstate30,which
openedin1957andbecameanimmediatesuccess.
In1957,thecityalsocompletedthe newDallasMemorialAuditorium, whicheventuallybecameoneofthe largestconventioncentersinthe world. Thecitycompletedimportant renovationsandexpansionstoLove Field.
Housingconstructionboomed whilebusinessleadersunveileda stringofambitiousdevelopment plans. “Keepthedirtflying”became Thornton’ssloganforanambitious city. Dallas’spopulationincreased dramatically,fromjustover450,000at thebeginningofhistermtonearly 700,000by1961.
In1960,attheageof80,he declinedtoseekanothertermas mayor. Heenteredintoaquietretirementin1961beforehisdeaththree yearslater.
ThorntontodayisperhapsbestrememberedintheNorthTexasareaas thenamesakefortheR.L. ThorntonFreeway,astretchofInterstate35EastthroughDallasaswellas thecity’sR.L.ThorntonElementary School.
Dothisinremembrance ofMe Lastweek,we touchedonthe subjectofbaptism,andthis weekIthought wecouldfollowupwitha chatabout communion. Forthosewho areChristians, thechurchordinanceof communionisasacredandspiritually personalevent.Insomecircles,the Lord’sSupperisreferredtoasasacrament,whileotherscallitanordinance, dependingonthetheologicaltradition. However,regardlessoftheterm,withinChristianchurches,itisseenasa meansofgraceandanintegralpartof obedienceandworship,establishedby ChristHimself.AtimeofsacredreflectiononChrist’sdeathandresurrection.Wheredoesitcomefrom?It’sa recordedtrueeventthatistoldineach ofthefourGospels,alongwiththe ApostlePaul,whoalsodiscussesitin 1Corinthians11:23-29.Verse26declares,“Forwheneveryoueatthis breadanddrinkthiscup,youproclaim theLord’sdeathuntilHecomes.”
Mosthaveseentheimagesofwhatis calledthe“LastSupper,”whereJesus andHisdisciplesaresittingarounda largetableeatinganddrinkingatwhat wascalledthePassovercelebration. Wereadinallfourgospelsaboutthis trueaccount,andhowJesuswanted HisfollowerstorememberHimasthe promisedLambofGod.InLuke 22:19-21,weread,“Jesustookaloaf ofbreadandgavethankstoGod.As HebrokeitandgaveittoHisdisciples, Hesaid,thisismybodygivenforyou; dothisinremembranceofme.Inthe sameway,afterthesupperhetookthe cup,saying,thiscupisthenewcovenantinmyblood,whichisshedfor you.”Matthew26:30revealsthatHe concludedthemealbysinginga hymn,thentheywalkedoutintothe nighttotheMountofOlives.Asthey enteredthegardenofGethsemane, Jesustoldthemtorestwhilehetook sometimetopray.Itwastherethat,as predicted,JesuswasbetrayedbyJudas.Thefollowingday,Hewascrucified.
Jesusdeclaredthatthebreadspokeof Hisbodythatwouldbebroken,as Psalm22andIsaiah53describethat Hewouldbesobrutallyandviolently torturedthatitwashardlyrecognizable.ThewinespokeofHisblood,with HimindicatingtheterribledeathHe wouldsoonexperience.Itisagreed thatmostlikelyHeliterallybledto death.Christ,theperfectLamb,the SonofGod,becamethefulfillmentof thecountlessOldTestamentpropheciesconcerningaRedeemer.Genesis 3:15,oftencalledtheprotoevangelium orfirstgospel,isanamazingbiblical prophecywhereGodrevealsthatatthe crucifixion,theserpentwillbruisethe heelofJesustheseedofthewoman, butintheresurrection,ChristtheSon ofGodwillcrushtheserpentshead, establishingtheLordastheultimate powerandauthorityinthecosmic strugglebetweengoodandevil.Inmy
view,thecommuniondoesnotliterally transformintothebloodandfleshof Jesus,whichiscalledtransubstantiation.Sinceitissymbolic,Idoseethe point.It’ssimplyaboutkeepingthe sacrificeofHisgreatlovefreshwithin ourheartsandminds.
So,aswepartakeoftheunleavened breadandwineorgrapejuice,theelementsserveasacovenantsymbolof Christ’sbodyandblood,andhowwe grieveasHewillinglysuffered.He gavethesupremesacrificeoflovethat canredeemus.Nowwecanhavespiritualhopeandfaith,aswecelebrate thissignofunityandtruthamongbelievers,anticipatingHisreturn.I’ve servedcommunioninchurches,prisons,andcorrectionalfacilitiesthroughouttheyears,andIcurrentlyworkwith ajailministrypreachingthegospel, baptizing,andservingcommunion, whereIremindeveryonehowserious thisis.FirstCorinthianschapter11 saysthatwhoeverreceivestheseelementsunworthilywillbeguiltyofsinningagainstthebodyandbloodofthe Lord.Theyabsorbeddamnationto themselves,andsomehaveliterally died.Neverallowtheceremonyto becomeadeadandformalritual,or cometotheLord’stablewithunconfessedsin.Personally,whenItake communion,Iembracethisasentering intotheholypresenceofGod.Asacred timeandplaceofrepentance,asking forgiveness,beingcleansed,andmade presentabletobecomeonewithHim.I imagineJesushangingonthecross, andwhatgreatlovethatcausedHimto willinglydietosaveme.It’sadeeply meaningfulmomentofremembering andappreciating.
