Mr. Chiddister came to Howe Military School to teach on September 1, 1986. For fourteen years, he has lead the band and choir at our school in the classroom, at concerts, and on the parade field. As the bandmaster, Mr. Chiddister spent many hours developing the talents of many aspiring musicians in the cadet corps. He taught individual music lessons, directed the concert and marching bands, and also worked to create beautiful music in the schoo l choir.
In 2000, he began the first junior high band, separate from the high school band ranks to encourage more young cadets to be involved in the fine art of music.
Carl Chiddister is recognized at Howe for his dedicated service to our school and to the fine arts program he has encouraged to flourish for 14 years.
le ads the band to the parade field to perform at the traditional Sunday parade s. At the right, Mr. Chiddister sits with wife Sally, and daughter Annette.
A large part of Mr. Chiddister ' s teaching at Howe went beyond the classroom. He directed the choir and band at the annual Boar 's Head dinner and also directed the band for graduation ceremonies.
An annual event during the Founder's Day weekend brings together parents and athletes of the senior class. This year during halftime ceremonies of the soccer games, eniors who played on a wildcat port team were recognized for their dedication. Many of the cadets who were involved in this event have been participating in athletics since their arrival at Howe in their freshman year. Through the years these cadets have grown to be the leaders of their teams both on and off the field of play. Sunny skies and cool temperatures characterized the fall afternoon, but the weather could not dampen the spirits of those present to honor the senior athletes. Each cadet was presented with a red rose and escorted by parents and family members in a :{JfOCession on the field.
Connie McCormack p layed on the vo ll eyball team for each of her four years at Howe. Connie was escorted by her parents in the senior athlete ceremony.

Fall Sports at Howe Military School begin as soon as cadets arrive on campus after a long summer break. Practices begin even earlier for several sports. Soccer team players sacrifice the last precious days of summer to return to Howe early to get a full week of extra practice before the rugors of school and company duties begin. Volleyball team players also make the trek to the Howe campus early to condition themselves for the matches ahead. The nets are set up in the gym and countless drills are run to prepare for the coming season. This effort pays off in the long run as all of the fall season sports teams find themselves reaping the rewards of good solid teamwork and determination. The last days of summer quickly fade into the crisp autumn afternoons where any visitor or guest of the Howe campus can find a majority of the cadet corps participating in one of the four sports offered in the early school year: Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball, or Tennis. As each cadet knows, the fire and tenacity of the Howe Wildcats can be sensed in the air as another year of Athletics at Howe Military School gets under way. Go Wildcats!

On the heals of the fall season, cadets try out for basketball, wrestling, swimming, cheerleading, and the rifle team. Practices are held each afternoon from 4:00 to 5:30 where cadets receive instruction from coaches and strategize for the upcoming games and contests. The winter season is the longest of the school year. Therefore, each cadet makes a commitment to his or her teammates to strive for improvement and excellence during the myriad of games, tournaments, matches, and meets. As the season progresses, the Howe Wildcats find success in using their skills and sportsmanship to bring home many victories for the maroon and gray. On many early mornings one can hear to ringing of the victory bell throughout the classrooms and barracks of Howe Military School announcing the success of another Wildcat team on the field of competition. Howe Military School's senior class of 2001 began the journey through their final year in late August. One week before the beginning of the school year, senior cadets converged on the Howe campus to initiate the senior leadership for the corning year. Battalion Commander Andrew Wills and members of his staff worked together to · set goals for the cadet corps of 2000-2001 with an emphasis on each cadet doing his or her best. Many in the senior class are finishing a long cadet career at Howe Military School. Several seniors like Josh Chapo and Andy Wills began in the junior high school and continued on through their senior year. As the year passes, each senior focuses more and more attention on their future plans. College applications and visits are planned and choices are made about the future. All the best to the class of 2001 as their new journey begins beyond HMS.

Clubs and Organizations at Howe Military School give students the opportunity to excel in areas that interest them as well as give them an outlet for creative endeavors. Clubs such as the Drama club put on the annual Mother's Day weekend performance. The play is always remarkably cast and put together by staff and students. Organizations such as the National Honor Society recognize the academic and leadership accomplishments of cadets who meet the set requirements. The speech and debate teams meet through out the school year and compete in meets with local schools and other private schools in the midwest. Cadets achieve great honors in these areas and are recognized yearly in a banquet just for them: the Fine Arts banquet.

The opponents for the Howe Hoop ters traveled from South Bend- Mishawaka, a team from the
WNDU channel 16 television news The two teams entertained the crow with their " dazzling" lay-ups and 3 point shots, but were equally matche enough to keep the score close.
Several volunteers from the au dience proved to be beneficial to the· teams by shooting the free throws.
Howe Military School wa glad to host the event to benefit a wor thy cause in our community. But this i Indiana It was the perfect excuse t play some basketball!

Th is cer emony is based on a l egend from the early 16th century. The story is that one day a s tudent of Qu ee n's Co ll ege, Oxford , was studying hi s Aristo tle in the nearby forest of Shotover. In the midst of hi s meditations he was sudd enl y attacked by a wild boar, which came furiously charging at him w ith open mouth Weaponless, but resourceful, the yo ung student thrust his Greek textbook into the open throat of the beast and choked him to death. The student then returned to the college and persuaded some ofhis friend s to help him They brought the boar to the college kitchen where the head, which was regarded as a special delicacy, was cut off and prepared for roasting It is supposed that the student al so retrieved his textbook at this time! Queen's College st ill ce lebrates this event. The Boar's Head Caro l which i s sung there , and wh ich yo u wi ll hear presently, is the oldest known carol printed in English. It was published by Winkyn de
Warde in 1521 A page of that early book with thi s caro l is still pre serve d in th e Bodlein Library at Oxford
The Boar's Head process ion was not pecul.iar to Queen's Co llege in medieval time s. It was more or les s a common c u stom, in various forms , at all great feasts
A medieval cas tl e in the winter time was a rather dreary place They had no entertainment as we know entertainment. Th ey could not tra ve l save on hor seback, and the roads were mostly impassable Therefore they had to make up their own entertainment, and it consisted largely of eat in g and drinking. Some of their great feas ts lasted for many hours , and important dishes s uch as th e Boar's Head were served with pomp and ceremony This kind of procession is presented annually at Howe Military's r endition of the " Boar 's Head Feast."
Below: Elliott Russell portrayed the part of a Wise Man who was invited to the feast. In the background, junior high cadet xx poses as one of the s lav es.
Above: Mr. Chandler Morley, the director of Marriot Dining se1vices, takes part in the Feast b y carrying the " Boar's Head" into the dining hall in a special procession to the " head table ."

Howe Military School has a goal and a mission. The focus of that goal is to educate and maturate the cadets of our school into young men and women capable of excelling in advanced education That goal also focuses on developing the character of each cadet so that he or she has the personal fortitude to succeed in all aspects of life. The framework of the military helps to initiate the orga nization and focus cadets require in order to succeed in many other areas . Many skills are tapped into by allowing students to learn leadership roles among their peers, instructing them in leadership training, and helping cadets to investigate their own needs for growth and expansion . Cadets at Howe Military School accept the challenge of being more than just a good student. They strive for excellence in their abilities to be good leaders, good citizens, and good people .
