HOWE MILITARY SCHOOL HOWE, INDIANA 46746 VOLUME 74 1997-98

It's about facing changes . It's about facing challenges. It's about starting over. It 's about working to improve and become better at everything we do. It ' s about changing how others view us. It's about facing changes thatneedto be made in ourselves. This year many changes and challenges have been set upon the community of Howe Military School. The senior class of 1998 is progressing in theirendeavorto be prepared for graduation. New cadets have the opportunity to start over and find success in many areas of their lives. Returning cadets find themselves challenged to continue developing a positive attitude about life, grow in character, and set goals!

Faces have changed. Our new superintendent opens the door for positive changes in our school as well as new teachers and staff members bring valuable knowledge to our academic, athletic, and military programs. Traditionhaschanged. Founder'sDayballandMothers ' Day ball are being held in the gymnasiummuchlikeitwas many years ago. Military Block schedule has moved from Wednesday to Monday afternoons. Grades are being calculated on a six week schedule instead of every three weeks. And the seniors are planning and preparing a "prom" forthe senior class. changes are big or small , they effect each one ofus. It's up to us to decide if we need to do an ABOUT FACE

'The person that made an impression on me most was Kramer. He was always there, he is a friend, actually more of a brother to me, he always understands."

-Joe Holt

"The person that has made a big impression on me is Captain Murphy. He has been my TO for 5 years ... hew as by my side through thick and thin ... " -Kevin LeToumeau

''The military aspect of Howe has changed greatly. When I first came it was really lenient... Back then F-conduct was rare. If there were more than three people on F-conduct it was amazing demerits used to be hard to get!"

-Jeremy Bourque

"It's hard to say specifically how I've changed, but I know I have matured andlk:now I'm ready to move on to college."

-Justin Kramer

When I first came here I had braces, but the second day of school I had them taken off after 4 long years ... I was happy! -Emmanuel Middlebrooks

"My biggest memory was of my first night at Howe."

-Sidney Ashby

Longtime Cadets • S

REv. TERRY THOMAS TIMSON first arrived at Howe Military School in 1988 as a volunteer in the junior high. Later he became a full-time employee of the school and since that time has served the students and faculty of Howe Military School as a counselor, mentor, and friend. Rev. Timson has been an integral part in the lives of many students. He encourages us to grow in confidence and faith. He al ways takes time out of his busy schedule to make room for us, the cadet corps. He believes in us, and helps us see the positive qualities in ourselves even when we cannot. He does not judge, even when we have done something wrong. Instead, he works with us to make us better people.

Rev.T , as he is known by cadets, lives by the motto "not for ourselves but for the whole world we are born." His genuine concern for each student reflects this selfless attitude. We were proud to do an About Face and be his support this past year when Rev.Twas diagnosed with cancer. He soon made is own About Face recovery and was in our lives again. The senior class of 1998 is honored to dedicate this yearbook to Rev. T for his continued impact on the lives of those he touches at Howe Military School.

"It is my sincere wish that in the years to come you look back on your time at Howe with both pride in your accomplishments and a deeper understanding of what the teachers represented on these pages have attempted to do. The lessons that were imparted by the faculty hopefully went far beyond the curriculum and the classroom and helped you understand the world around you. Your life, from this point on, will be a serious of choices. Make each choice wisely. I hope that we, in some small way, have shown you the pathway to success and happiness."

CADET DEONTE BELL

To every thing there is a season, And a time to every purpose. At this time be reassured that You can do all things through Jesus Christ.

Deonte, whatever your mind can conceive, you can achieve. It requires commitment, perseverance and self-discipline.

This is the time to take your future in hand. Graduation from high school is a commendable achievement.

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad in this time.

As you prepare for college, begin with the end in mind. You are the only one who can put limits on yourself. Achieve as much as you can Life is too short to be a spectator. Be encouraged and keep your faith in God.

Best wishes and our love, Aunt Helen and Uncle Joe

One Final Thought:

"You have not chosen me, But I have chosen you." John 15:16

"Let us make our society something beautiful for God. He has chosen us; we have not first chosen Him. But we must respond by making our society something beautiful for God- Something very beautiful. For this we must give all- our utmost. We must cling to Jesus, grasp Him, have a grip on Him, and never let go for anything. We must fall in love with Jesus." -Mother Teresa, from " Total Surrender "

Its OUT

Reaching a Goal in the FACE of Deadlines!

<=::<::>I<::> p h <::> ri._

The 1997 98 edition of the Howe Military School Tatler was created under the staff of 3 senior cadets and 3 faculty advisers. The book contains 144 pages to be followed by a 16 page supplement to be mailed in the summer of 1998. All of the pages were electronically generated in the multimedia computer lab using Adobe Pagemaker 6.0 5.0 and using Pentium 75 computers. Special thanks to Jessi King for her dedication to the creation of this book. Thanks also for all the "leg work" in getting quotes, e-mailing people for input and ideas, writing letters to parents , and gathering candids! Your talent and dedication will be missed! Thank you also to Laura Morgan for helping on several pages and for her input on ideas for the yearbook . And Nick Secaur for his help the first semesteron sports sections. A HUGE thanks to Mr. Roger Bauman for his last minute accommodations for all the pictures that needed to be taken! Also for taking his personal time to be at special events to get pictures. Thanks to Mrs. Johanna Arklie for her enthusiasm this year in putting together the special section just for junior high cadets. It takes the cooperation of many dedicated indi vi duals to accomplish a goal such as finishing a yearbook. I hope you enjoy the memories captured here for years to come!
