HULEN HOWARD

Hello. I am Hulen!

I am driven by an appreciation for the narrative potential inherent in architecture.

My mission is to craft physical environments that transport visitors into unique experiences that resonate with the human condition, evoking emotional reactions in those who

engage with them. These ideals were explored throughout my collegiate careerfrom studio projects, study abroad, research endeavors, and a studentled publication. I also had the opportunity to intern at Universal Creative, where I saw narrative-based design principles put to use in real-time construction.

I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Architecture, an Honors College Degree, a minor in Architectural History/ Theory, and a minor in Art History. I am currently working as an AIT at BRW Architects in Dallas, Tx.

BESTON, THE BEST OF BOSTON

BESTON is a daring conceptual design project meant to leverage it’s position within the city to create new urban typologies. On a team of 5, I helped lead the creative direction throughout the design process while also producing key drawings

and visuals. For the enhibition, I experimented with projection mapping technology to carry out idea of engaging the public into the presentation. The project comprises of commerical, hospitality, residential, and public programs while also

planning for the future of rising sea levels in Boston. Literally bridging accross the channel, this complex is meant to connect the historic parts of Boston proper with the developing area of Seaport.

BARK+BUILD

“Hot-Dog” Award Winner

“Bark+Build” is an annual competition for AIA Dallas, supporting the local SPCA.

Inspired by the iconic Pentax SLR camera, my teams entry to the competition showcases nostalgial brought to life with meticulous craftsmanship and detail. From the birch wood framing and

laser-cut cylindrical lens, to the innovative 3D-printed elements. Thoughtfully designed to feature a hidden storage compartment and leash hooks to mimic the iconic camera strap. Even the custom painted cushions

are designed to be machine washable and feature a color the dog will be able to see. This doghouse transcend it’s typology to become a conversation piece within any environment.

STADIO INFINITO

Stadio Infinito is a living memorial, respecting the old while breathing new life into San Siro’s memory. Due to the contextual significance of San Siro, I opted to re-use the iconic red trusses and transport them to the new site. The iconic trusses needed

to be the focal point, the front facade becomes a system of reflective glass panels that give the illusion of floating in the clouds. The facade is capable of rotating on a 12 degree axis, allowing it to reflect the sky or the activities of the piazza below. Milan

is a city of image, whose culture comes from those who occupy it. With this in mind, the stadium strives to become a vessel of culture that can host festivals such as fashion week, design week, and more.

Lasercut Model - In Progress
Historical Photo of Boley

BOLEY, OK

Focused on various town typologies of Oklahoma, Dr. Jared Macken began to explore the history of Boley, Oklahoma. An all black town settled prior to statehood, it has a rich history of architecture and culture, yet very little of it remains today. We looked through old historic

photos to recreate some of the architecture of the town, and utilized this to speculate how the town could have developed had it continued to thrive. The models were lasercut to fold into 3D forms. This summer research project helped me in my own Wentz Research Project

which I conducted over the following year. Dr. Macken and I also put together an exhibition in the School of Architecture that displayed this research, the model, research from his class “Legend of the Town Centre”, and my Wentz Research.
