OUR MISSION

To build an active community of lifelong learners in a nurturing educational environment in which each child feels happy, respected, proud, secure, and loved.

To nurture the students’ understanding of their culture and history and provide them with the necessary tools to guide each student in developing a positive identity.

To ensure students’ understanding that all languages and cultures make up a part of the whole to create a healthy, well-balanced individual and responsible citizen.

Hovnanian School is a non-profit corporation accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends, Unique and individualized. Words we often use to describe the Hovnanian School’s approach to learning. Unique curriculum elements. Embracing the individual needs of each student. Unique and individualized programs that together, foster a sense of community that only the Hovnanian School can provide.

This past year was indeed unique for us as we said goodbye to an individual, our longtime friend, mentor, colleague and principal, Anahid Garmiryan, and wish her the best on her future endeavors at the Gulbenkian Foundation. We are extremely grateful that she and others created an environment that allows the Hovnanian School to embrace change as we continuously improve our focus on enriching the lives of our children. Our outstanding faculty cultivates and expands these efforts by continuing the commitment to providing not only a world-class education, but also – as importantly – a world class experience.

The 2013-2014 year was an exciting one for our school as we initiated the upgrades to our computer systems and information technology programs. From school-wide interactive white boards to focused project time initiatives, we are thankful for those who gave and brought these programs to life. We also focused on progressing many key initiatives that will allow our school to grow and meet the needs of our community. These efforts, which will be completed in the years to come, are made possible only through the generosity of our supporters. Without you, it would be impossible to continually innovate and strengthen the opportunities offered to our students. We appreciate every dollar or hour you give to us and are deeply grateful for your continuous support. As our daily lives grow increasingly complex and demanding, we hope your loyalty and financial support to the Hovnanian School will endure.

As we move into our next academic year, we will see advancements in our use of technology and learning methods while enhancing our communication with one of our most valuable resources, our parents. We are blessed with an energetic community that is always moving us forward, striving to provide the best for our children while keeping our cultural relevance in focus. We will enjoy working with the Alumni Association, community groups and educational societies as we captivate the metropolitan area with outstanding results.

We hope our first annual report will provide insight and transparency into our school. As Chairman of the Board, I believe this and future reports will demonstrate our commitment to using our resources wisely, as well as an opportunity to recap the past year and provide a look ahead to the next one.

Year after year, our students succeed academically and are inspired to become the next generation of thought leaders and remarkable citizens of the world. I could not be more proud of our school and wish our graduates the very best in their future careers as we thank you for helping them realize their dreams.

A Message from our Principal Dear Friends of Hovnanian School, A school year is a journey and we believe our 2013-2014 journey has been an exceptionally successful and joyous one!

Our goal is to see every student reach their potential and arrive at their destination at their own pace. Thanks to their meticulous work, our teachers have continued to enhance the educational growth of each of our students and raise our school’s academic expectations. While we do not teach to the test, Terra Nova national standardized test results were overwhelmingly positive for the majority of our students this year. We are truly and justifiably proud of these results but please remember that any standardized test is only one of many indicators of our students’ talents and success in school.

We are a community of learners, from as young as the two year-olds in our Early Learning Center to as old as the senior members of our staff. Our students participate actively in their own learning. For example, beginning in 1st grade, they each actively take part in their own parent-teacher conferences. They also participate in new multi-age workshops during project time and our after school activities, including chess, music lessons, woodworking, coding, multicultural and international learning activities such as this year’s “Mountain Chains of the World”, and community service, including but not limited to lunch room service and visits to the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

During the 2013-2014 academic year, Hovnanian School’s community also continued to grow thanks to the guidance of its Board of Trustees and its Chairman, Dr. Greg Simonian, the efforts of its parents and PTO, its Alumni, its Friends, its fundraising committees and benefactors. Their dedication, continuous support and invaluable contribution helped us to undertake numerous projects.

We are looking forward to continuing our progress and educating our students by holding them to the highest standards and equipping them with the best tools to continue to be successful in top high schools and universities. Your trust and presence are invaluable in this process. Please allow us to express our gratitude toward all of our Friends. Without you, we wouldn’t be where we are now. Our shared passion for the School is a source of inspiration to each and every one of us.

The event was a resounding success and our largest fundraising event of the year. O U R PA R E N T-T E AC H E R S O R G A N I Z AT I O N The Parent-Teachers Organization (PTO) promotes the goals and vision of the Hovnanian School by working with the parents, faculty, administration, students and Board of Trustees throughout the school year. This dedicated group of parents selflessly donate many hours of their time to organize numerous fundraising events, including our annual Mother’s Day Luncheon and Art in Fall. Other notable initiatives this year included our Manti Dinner and Choreg Sale, the Teacher’s Auction, and organized events with Posh, Bloomingdales, and A Mano.

Thank you to the PTO Executive Committee, event chairs and all the parents who volunteered to support our school and make our community so special.

We would like to highlight some of these events and properly recognize others involved in making these fundraisers such a success!

Art In Fall Art In Fall was established in 2010 to promote national and international artists of Armenian descent. The venue offers emerging and established artists an opportunity to exhibit and sell their art in a professionally organized setting. The annual event consistently draws hundreds of attendees. Artists graciously donate 40% of all sales to the Hovnanian School.

Although this event takes place over one weekend, the planning involved takes months.

A huge thank you to the members of the Art in Fall Committee for their hard work in planning one of the school’s largest fundraising events.

ANNUAL FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Since the 2010-2011 school year, Hovnanian School’s Annual Fundraising Committee has been actively working toward bringing the community together by organizing three very successful annual events: the Food Festival, the New Year’s Eve Celebration, and the 50/50 Raffle.

We are grateful to the hard-working Committee and its generous community of family and friends who covered the majority of the expenses and devoted their time and talents to host events that benefit the community as a whole, while simultaneously raising money for the school.

Here are a few highlights about each event:

Food Festival Each fall, the Annual Fundraising Committee organizes a food festival where they serve deliciously grilled kebabs and provide musical entertainment and a variety of activities for the children. It is a great opportunity for the community to enjoy a fun and relaxing day.

New Year’s Eve The New Year’s Eve celebration’s success is marked by the hundreds of attendees it attracts each year. It is a wonderful evening when everyone gathers together to celebrate the past year and ring in the new.

Gifts of Cash While there are many ways of giving to the Hovnanian School, gifts in the form of cash, check or credit card are how the majority of our contributions are received. Cash or check payments can be made in person or via mail. Gifts may also be made online via credit card. The process is simple and secure.

Matching Gifts We encourage members of the Hovnanian School community to take advantage of corporate matching gift programs to increase the amount of a gift. If you work for a company that offers a matching gift program, the impact of your gift to the Hovnanian School may double or even triple. Some companies even match gifts made by retirees.

Annual Key Pledge Program The Annual Key Pledge is a fundraising program that allows you to designate a certain commitment level that you can contribute year after year on an annual basis. Your pledge can go towards our Student Education Fund or it can be restricted to one of our key areas.
