The Myths and Lies About Poverty

T

he poor will always be with us,” say the cynics. No doubt, some will always be wealthier than others.

We wouldn’t want to live in a society that forced all to be equal. But poverty isn’t inevitable. The 30 million people in America who lived in poverty even before the pandemic when unemployment was at record lows needn’t exist in that state.

Too many myths and lies cloud our understanding of the poor. Most poor people are not black. More are white than black, female than male, young than old. More have a high school education. Some graduate.

Poverty in America used to be far worse, about a third of Americans lived in poverty in the 1950s. Poverty was reduced, dramatically, by Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. The war on poverty was defeated not by poverty, but by the war in Vietnam, which sapped resources, attention and will.

Most poor people work when they can. They take the early bus. They do the hardest jobs for the least amount of money. They bear the most amount of stress. They care for the children of others. They tend to the sick. They serve food in restaurants. They sweep the streets. They clean bedpans beneath hospital beds that they cannot lie in when they get sick. Many are essential workers who are at greater risk in the pandemic.

When the pandemic forced the economy to shut down, millions lost their jobs - and their health care at work, if they had any. Over 30 million still draw unemployment, with over a million new applicants each week as

companies continue to lay off workers.

Many more children are hungry.

Public policy - the “stimulus checks,” the enhanced unemployment insurance, the expansion of food stamps (SNAP), the partial moratorium on evictions and foreclosures, the aid to businesses if they kept their employees on payroll - saved millions from poverty.

Now those benefits have expired, but the unemployment remains high. Many companies are declaring bankruptcy. Many are slashing payrolls with permanent, not temporary layoffs.

Again, public policy could help. The House passed another rescue package -- the HEROES ACT -- that would provide another round of stimulus checks, sustain enhanced unemployment benefits, continue the expanded food stamps, extend the payroll protection subsidies and provide aid to states and localities to avoid the layoffs of millions of public employees.

The Republican Senate refused to act - and refused to compromise. Senate leader Mitch McConnell put together a $1 trillion alternative but didn’t even try to get his members to support it.

Twenty Republican senators opposed doing anything.

The nonpartisan Urban Institute noted that a second round of stimulus checks alone would keep 8.3 million people out of poverty from August to December. The extension of enhanced unemployment benefits would keep 3.6 million out of poverty. The continuation of food stamp expansions would keep about 1.7 million out. If all three were enacted, 12.2 million people would be

kept out of poverty for the rest of the year.

Mitch McConnell refused to act. Donald Trump, the great “deal maker,” refused even to get involved.

After the benefits expired, McConnell finally decided to pass a bill out of the Senate, but his Republican colleagues would only support about $300 billion in new money for a bill that did not include the stimulus checks, did not include the SNAP benefits and limited unemployment assistance to $300 a week, half of what it was in the first rescue package.

They voted to put millions of Americans into poverty.

Public policy matters. We could eliminate poverty in this country with sensible policy. Raise the minimum wage to a living wage; empower workers to organize and negotiate a fair share of the profits they help to produce.

Guarantee affordable health care for all. Provide affordable housing for all.

Provide high-quality pre-K and quality education for all. Add a jobs guarantee, so that instead of forcing workers onto unemployment when the economy slows or their company goes belly up, they can move to a public job doing

work that is necessary - from retrofitting buildings for solar heating to caring for our public parks to providing care for the elderly and more.

Let’s not fool ourselves. America has millions in poverty because Americans choose not to demand the policies that would lift them out of poverty. Because corporate CEOs choose profits and bonuses over fair pay for their workers. Because small-minded legislators are more responsive to those who pay for their party than those who are in need.

This isn’t complicated. The recent decision to block action on a second rescue package is a decision to increase the number of Americans in poverty, the number of children who go hungry. The Bible teaches we will be judged by how we treat the “least of these.” We should shudder at that judgment.

Mayor’s Office Of Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence

E

ffective immediately, the Mayor’s Office of Human Trafficking will expand to include Domestic Violence and focus on services and policies to address gender-based violence. The new Office of Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence (MOHT&DV) will be led by Minal Patel Davis.

Mayor Sylvester Turner made the announcement Monday along with District C City Council Member Abbie Kamin, Minal Patel Davis, director of the newly expanded office and Emily Whitehurst of the Houston Area Women’s Center.

The new office is launching a partnership with Magpies & Peacocks called the MAKR Collective to empower human trafficking and domestic violence victims economically.

MAKR Collective is an independent entrepreneurship program that works in collaboration with M&P to help survivors gain valuable, life-long skills for employment opportunities in the fashion industry.

Starting in October, the MAKR Collective will be set up to transition six clients per month into the virtual 3-6-month pilot program. This unique opportunity seeks to use remote visual learning techniques to teach participants how to sew, cut patterns, learn

he City of Houston’s Mayor’s Office released the Houston Climate Impact Assessment, to better illustrate how climate change will impact Houston’s future based on lower and higher scenarios of future climate change. The assessment, conducted by Anne Stoner and Katharine Hayhoe of ATMOS Research & Consulting, studied 25 separate future climate indicators, including the number of days with temperatures above 100 degrees, the number of nights above 80 degrees, total annual precipitation, days with precipitation above 4 inches, and the annual number of dry days.

“As we keep our eyes on the gulf during another record-breaking hurricane season, we know the damage that a changing climate can cause,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “We need to be on offense, which includes being informed and taking immediate action to reduce emissions to ensure that Houston is prepared and resilient for generations to come.”

The assessment used historical and current climate data from 11 regional weather stations from Columbus to Beaumont to Galveston using historical data from 1950 until now to project

LATINOS POWER UP TO T

he U.S. Census Bureau predicts that in the next six months Latinos will no longer be the minority but the majority. A static that excites the members of Jolt, the largest Latino progressive organization in Texas, since with greater numbers comes greater power. However, legislators are not utilizing Latinos’ political power. Latinos across the country are expected to support different agendas, show up at the ballot box, and check this and that box but no one is really listening to what they want. No one is taking the time to invest in the community but expects the community to invest in them. Antonio Arellano, Interim Executive Director of Jolt, thinks it is time out for that. If any political party wants to capture Latinos they must first invite them to the party.

Historically, Latinos have had low voter turnout and why should they when no one is actively engaging them. An ad in Spanish here and a translated website there does not make for a convincing argument that one cares about the plight of the people. Arellano suggests to grab the ear of Latinos legislators need to start tackling the issues that mean something to them like healthcare for all, immigration reform, and racial equity. In the era of Black Lives Matter and the

senseless killing of Black people, Latinos have come to realize that the Black fight is their fight as well.

“The police brutality in murders of folks like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor has made sure that Latinos recognize that this fight is not just a fight that should be fought by Black leaders of our country. We are in this fight as well. “ Arellano continued, “We recognize that we are oppressed by the same oppressor. And it is important that in this moment in history that we stand side-by-side with our Black brothers and sisters and push back against discrimination and racism.”

Political leaders must not do a whitewash of the issues and expect Latinos to get on board. Take the time to invest in them. Arellano pointed out that in this current election cycle not one major political party has reached out to the Latino community. While they are not asking any special treatment, the people simply just want the opportunity to be heard like everyone else.

“What we are asking for is equality, equity, a fair playing field for everyone,” Arellano said as key to getting Latinos to register to vote and show up at the polls come November.

Far too long black and brown communities have cried out in pain about the blatant injustices of this nation to deaf ears. It is time out for that kind of behavior. Young political mavens are galvanizing across the country, no longer asking for justice to be served but demanding it. Movements are in place in every corner of this nation where the youth are the ones picking up the mantle for justice where past civic leaders have grown weary and tired.

he Texas Education Agency has announced that Harmony Public Schools is one of the state’s rare first recipients of the new Teacher Incentive Allotment, a special fund created to reward the state’s highest-performing teachers. The recognition means that hundreds of Harmony teachers across the state will receive up to $32,000 in additional salary starting this fall.

“Each day at Harmony Public Schools, we see how teachers have the extraordinary ability to make a deep and lasting impact on the lives of the children they reach,” Harmony Public Schools CEO Fatih Ay said. “We are glad to have the opportunity to see them rewarded even further for all they do for our students and their families, and appreciative of the TEA for making this possible.”

The Teacher Incentive Allotment was created by the Texas Legislature in 2019 as part of the state’s new education bill, known as HB3. The primary purpose of HB3 was to provide new funds for across-the-board pay raises for Texas teachers. Harmony used those funds as well as others for one of the state’s most comprehensive pay increases for its staff, including $3,000-$5,000 raises for each of its teachers in base pay, with additional dollars for working hard-to-staff subjects and for length of service.

Additionally, HB3 also created a separate funding pool - known as the Teacher Incentive Allotment - for the specific purpose of providing additional salary for teachers who demonstrated exceptional performance in hard-to-staff teaching positions, including low-income and rural communities.

Louisville Has Settled Breonna Taylor’s Wrongful Death Lawsuit For $12 Million

he city of Louisville, Kentucky, has agreed to pay $12 million to the family of Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old EMT killed by police six months ago, to settle a wrongful death lawsuit, family attorney Sam Aguilar confirmed to CNN. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is expected to announce the settlement later Tuesday in a joint press conference with the Taylor family’s attorneys.

Speaking to News Radio 840 WHAS on Tuesday morning, Fischer declined to comment on the settlement, saying, “I don’t have anything to announce on that at this time.”

Taylor’s family sued the city after Louisville Metro Police officers broke down the door to Taylor›s apartment and fatally shot her while executing a late-night, “no-knock” warrant in a narcotics investigation on March 13.

A C N N r e v i e w o f t h e shooting found that police believed Taylor was home alone when she was in fact accompanied by her boyfriend, who was legally armed. That miscalculation, along with the decision to press forward with a high-risk, forced-entry raid under questionable circumstances, contributed to the deadly outcome.

Taylor’s boyfriend, who said he believed the home was being broken into, shot and injured an officer, and police killed Taylor in the return fire. The officers were not wearing body cameras, police said.

Until Freedom, a social justice organization that has protested in Louisville, released a statement Tuesday reacting to the reported city settlement.

“No amount of money will bring back Breonna Taylor,” the group said. “We see this settlement as the bare minimum you can do for a grieving mother. The city isn’t doing her any favors. True justice is not served with cash settlements. We need those involved in her murder to be arrested and charged. We need accountability.

We need justice.”

The Louisville Metro Police Department declined to comment. The police union did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Aguilar confirmed the settlement on Tuesday morning.

“The city’s response in this case has been delayed and it’s been frustrating, but the fact that they’ve been willing to sit down and talk significant reform was a step in the right direction

and hopefully a turning point,” Aguilar said.

Kentucky AG Leads Criminal investigation

None of the three officers involved in the flawed raid has been charged with a crime. One officer, Brett Hankinson, was fired in late June for “wantonly and blindly” firing 10 rounds into her apartment, then-interim Louisville Police Chief Robert Schroeder wrote.

The fatal police shooting has led to months of protests in Louisville and across the country under the overarching Black Lives Matter movement against anti-Black racism and police violence. Since her death, the police chief was fired in June after a separate police shooting, and the Louisville city council passed “Breonna’s Law,” which banned no-knock search warrants.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, the first Black person to hold the post and a Republican rising star, was made a special prosecutor in the case earlier this year, and the FBI has opened an investigation as well.

A grand jury has been empaneled to investigate the shooting, though

Cameron is expected to announce a charging decision soon, though he has declined to provide a specific timeline.

“My office is continually asked about a timeline regarding the investigation into the death of Ms. Breonna Taylor. An investigation, if done properly, cannot follow a specific timeline,” Cameron tweeted last week.

Amazon Gets FAA Approval To Deliver By Drones

mazon just got one step closer to sending flying robots to your front door with that much-needed package of diapers.

The Federal Aviation Administration officially designated the e-commerce colossus an “air carrier” on Monday, paving the way for Amazon to start testing its plans to drop off packages within 30 minutes.

The FAA’s approval marks a huge milestone for Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos grand plans to dominate online shopping by dramatically reducing delivery times. Last year, the shopping behemoth announced that it would start testing a shift from two-day shipping to one-day shipping for Prime customers.

The drones, Amazon says, could allow it to reduce shipping times to mere minutes once a customer hits the “buy” button.

“This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and indicates the FAA’s confidence in Amazon’s operating and safety procedures for an autonomous drone delivery service that will one day deliver packages to our customers around the world,” Prime Air vice president David Carbon said in a statement.

The company will “work closely with the FAA and other regulators around the world to realize our vision of 30-minute delivery,” he added.

Questions: Rockets Departure From The NBA Play-Offs Start An Offseason Of Uncertainty

ockets fans all around the world will be glued to every social media outlet they have access to in the next three months as the 2019-20 NBA season rounds itself out. Houston was eliminated from the Western Conference Playoffs on this past Saturday by the number one seeded Los Angeles Lakers. Although their season is done on the court, the off the court situations and questions left behind by a team that was poised and ready to compete for a championship when the season restarted in late July after COVID-19 stopped play for over three months has just begun.

Here are a few things the Rockets will have to accomplish before the start of the 2020-21 NBA season: Head Coach Wanted

Former head coach Mike D’Antoni parted ways with the franchise he had amassed a very impressive record

with during his tenure with the Rockets going 217-101 in four seasons. Yet it was his five games above .500 (28-23) in the playoffs that had owner Tillman Fertitta worried if D’Antoni would ever take it to the next level and bring his team and this city an NBA Championship.

Now Houston must begin an intensive search for the next coach who will be able to utilize superstars James Harden and Russell Westbrook effectively while abandoning the “Small Ball” approach that consisted of forward P.J. Tucker playing center.

Looking for A New Role

One major area where the Rockets were exposed against the Lakers was the inefficiency of its role players.

D’Antoni played a tight seven to eightman rotation that consisted of players that fit his system of shooting three’s and playing a very fast paced style of defense. Now that he is no longer the coach, it leaves a small conundrum for the next head coach who will implement a new brand of basketball.

It will be easy to use age as a factor when it comes to forwards Jeff Green, Thabo Sefolosha, DeMarre Carrol and center Tyson Chandler. The
