LOCAL: HCC’S ELECTRIC VEHICLE TRAINING PROGRAM

In a significant stride towards advancing sustainability and education, the Houston Community College (HCC) Transportation Center of Excellence - Electric Vehicle Training Program has received a generous donation of $200,000 from BP America. The announcement was made during the HCC Board of Trustees meeting on May 15, 2024.

The funds will be utilized to offer an intensive eight-hour safety and fundamentals course for over 300 employees from the City of Houston and Harris County fleet departments. This course is designed to equip technicians with the essential skills and knowledge required for the efficient repair and maintenance of electric vehicles (EVs).

Mark Crawford, senior vice president at BP America, expressed the company's commitment to sustainability

and energy transition. "We are proud to support the HCC Transportation Center of Excellence - Electric Vehicle training program. This partnership aligns with BP's commitment to sustainable livelihoods and advancing the energy transition," he stated.

Since its inception on April 1, 2024, at the HCC North Forest Campus – Automotive Training Center, the program has successfully trained over 100 city and county fleet mechanics and automotive repair technicians. HCC’s training regimen features state-of-theart equipment for hands-on learning and classroom instruction, focusing on the potential risks associated with high-voltage components in EVs.

Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher, Chancellor of HCC, emphasized the importance of the program, stating, "We are delighted to be at the forefront

of this important education to equip Houstonians with the knowledge and skills to maintain electric vehicles. This generous donation is a win for the partners involved and for helping to ensure a sustainable future."

The donation was formally presented during the Board of Trustees meeting, with notable attendees including Nick Hadjigeorge, interim chief resilience and sustainability officer for Houston, and Lisa Lin, director of sustainability for Harris County, alongside BP officials.

This initiative represents a significant step towards a sustainable future, fostering the necessary skills within the community to support the growing electric vehicle industry.

COMMENTARY BIDEN’S ANTI-NAFTA MOMENT

The Biden-Harris administration is making bold moves to ensure America leads the global clean energy economy of the 21st century.

We are at the crossroads of our country’s next major shift in trade policy and domestic manufacturing that will define our economy for decades. The last time we were here was more than 30 years ago. I was helping to organize the movement to stop the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The framework being put forward this time, by the current administration, is the anti-NAFTA moment American workers have been waiting for. I am organizing in support of it.

The tariffs announced this month on electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, batteries, semiconductors, and materials like aluminum and steel are part of a broader regime of policies and investments creating the foundation for America’s leadership in the next economy.

These tariffs are part of a smart, targeted approach that stands at odds with the flailing, nonstrategic approach of his predecessor. They show the president understands the threats posed by China and has the courage to take them on in a real and impactful way.

And the administration gets that tariffs are just one piece of the puzzle. In his remarks at the signing ceremony for the tariffs, Biden highlighted his bipartisan infrastructure law’s investment in building 500,000 EV charging stations nationwide and the “thousands and thousands of [International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers] jobs” it would create. The tariffs will help ensure the aluminum, steel, solar panels, and other components and materials for these charging stations are American-made. And that means even more good American jobs.

NAFTA cost our country hundreds of thousands of jobs and devastated America’s manufacturing sector. By contrast, Biden’s trade policies, coupled with

other policies and investments, have the power to create a green jobs boom and birth a new manufacturing renaissance. Companies have already announced over $825 billion in private sector investments in US manufacturing and clean energy since Biden took office. All of this is key not only to long-term job creation, but to stopping China’s domination of the next economy.

A future in which China holds all the economic cards is one in which climate change is allowed to run rampant. Even though manufacturing in the United States is 3.2 times more carbon efficient than manufacturing in China, China has a grip on more than 80 percent of the world’s solar manufacturing. China produces 58 percent of all new electric vehicles sold worldwide. In 2022, China accounted for about 59% of global primary aluminum production and 54% of the world's crude steel production.

All that manufacturing is energy intensive, especially for steel and aluminum. And in China that energy comes primarily from coal – the dirtiest energy source there is.

China is the world’s largest consumer of coal – with 56 percent of global consumption in 2020, according

to the International Energy Agency. That coal reliance makes carbon emissions from Chinese steel production as much as double that from American steel. It adds to the urgency of seizing market share from China and using our own domestic manufacturing to help expand the market. And it is why the president paired his tariffs on Chinese solar with tariffs on aluminum and a $500 million investment in the first aluminum smelter in the US in 45 years. Imagine that new aluminum plant being built with modern protections against pollution and powered by American-produced solar panels made with the plant’s own aluminum. That is what President Biden imagined. And he is making it happen.

The Chinese government has not played fair. It overproduces in order to flood global markets. It has leaned on exports of “bifacial” (basically, two-sided) solar panels, which were foolishly exempt under the Trump-era solar tariffs – with 98 percent of Chinese solar panel imports to our country now being bifacial. And the Commerce Department is now investigating how China has allegedly used countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand as pass-throughs to route solar products to

the US and evade tariffs.

The Biden administration’s trade policy in this area can help make China more of an honest broker. But even that is no substitute for owning the manufacturing and supply chains of the staple goods that will power our next economy. And let us not forget the national pride Americans once felt in the products invented and built by American hands.

The US automobile industry is a great example. The future of automobiles is electric. If we do not invest heavily in US EV production, we cede important ground to our primary global competitor. And we leave behind the current and future auto workers who will benefit from robust domestic EV production. But President Biden’s policies once again show he has the whole picture in mind. He is not simply putting a tariff on EV's and expecting us to dominate. He is investing in the supply chain and protecting it – with tariffs on the aluminum, steel, semiconductors, and chips that are all vital to EV manufacturing (EVs use twice as many chips as gas-powered cars).

At the end of the day, we must invest in domestic growth of the industries at the center of the emerging global economy. If we fail, we allow China to dominate that economy and risk taking steps backwards in our efforts to curb climate change and save our planet. The Biden administration is showing its keen understanding of what is needed to tackle that challenge and build a strong future for American workers at the same time.

The Primary Run-off Races are in full swing, with 2,404 voters having participated in early voting since it began on Monday. These crucial elections will determine the candidates who will compete in the November General Election across Harris and Fort Bend counties and throughout Texas. Despite last week's storms, which resulted in the closure of six polling locations, 44 in-person polling sites remain open until 7 PM on Friday, ahead of

HarrisCntyFY24_HstnStyleMag_ENG_5.20-24_10.8125x6.5_f.pdf 1 5/15/24 9:52 AM

The run-off ballot includes several heated races for positions in Congress, the State Senate, the State House of Representatives, the 14th Court of Appeals, Harris County Tax Assessor, Fort Bend County Constable, and Democratic Party Chair. Voters can cast their ballots at any polling location within the county where they are registered.

Top Polling Locations

West Gray Multi-Service Center: Leading the turnout with 390 voters on Monday, this Montrose location sees heightened activity due to the Republican race between Kenneth Omoruyi, CPA, MBA, and Caroline Kane, which will determine who challenges incumbent Lizzie Fletcher for Congress in District 7. Additionally, the Democratic run-off between State Rep. Jarvis Johnson and interim SD15 State Senator Molly Cook is drawing significant attention.

Bayland Park: With 221 voters, this location in the Gulfton area is another hotspot. Key races here include the Republican Primary Run-off for CD-7, the SD15 Democratic Primary Run-off, and the cultural clash between State Rep. Shawn Thierry and challenger Laura Ashley Simmons in District 146. Thierry’s race has become notably intense, highlighting a generational and ideological divide within the community.

Houston Community College at Loop 610: Attracting 200 voters, this polling site is significant for its involvement in the CD7, SD15, and HD 146 run-offs.

Sunnyside Multi-Service Center: Reporting 153 voters, this center is a pivotal location for the supporters of Thierry, reflecting the strong backing from church-led older African Americans.

Acres Homes Multi-Service Center:

With 145 voters, this site is at the heart of Rep. Johnson’s current House District 139, featuring a key race between HCC Trustee Charlene Johnson and Aldine activist Angela Thibodeaux.

Other Notable Races

Voters participating in the Democratic Run-off ballot across 10 Houston area counties are also deciding between Velda Renita Faulkner and Jerry Zimmerer for the 14th Court of Appeals. Additionally, Harris County voters are focused on the race between Vivian King, a highly experienced criminal courts attorney, and Gemayel Haynes, as well as the contest between Desiree Broadnax, a DA Office employee, and Annette Ramerez, an Aldine ISD tax office attorney, for the Harris County Tax Assessor Collector position.

Encouragement to Vote

With critical decisions at stake and the primary run-off races set to shape the November General Election, it is essential for voters to take advantage of the remaining early voting days. The community is urged to participate and ensure their voices are heard in these pivotal elections.

Early Voting Schedule: Polls remain open through 7 PM Friday. Don't miss the opportunity to vote ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, May 28.

HEALTH: STAY INFORMED - NAVIGATING THE POTENTIAL RISKS OF SUMMER AMID NEW COVID-19 VARIANT – KP.2

As the United States braces for summer, the landscape of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to evolve. While overall Covid-19 levels are at their lowest, the emergence of new virus variants, including the dominant KP.2 variant, raises concerns about a potential summer wave. Let's delve into the latest developments and expert insights to navigate this uncertain terrain.

The KP.2 variant, a member of the FLiRT variants originating from the Omicron family, has surged to prominence, comprising over a quarter of Covid-19 cases in the U.S. This variant's mutations, particularly in key amino acid locations, raise concerns about increased transmissibility

and a potential summer surge. However, experts emphasize the unpredictability of viral evolution and its impact on population dynamics.

Dr. Andy Pekosz, a virologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, underscores the dual nature of variant mutations, either evading immunity or enhancing transmissibility. This complex interplay underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and research to anticipate the virus's trajectory.

While Covid-19 surveillance has scaled back since the end of the public health emergency, available data suggests a positive trend. Wastewater surveillance indicates decreasing viral activity nation-

wide, and hospitalization rates remain extremely low. However, the absence of comprehensive data underscores the need for continued monitoring and adaptation to evolving circumstances.

Despite the uncertainties, experts caution against complacency, particularly with the approaching fall and winter seasons. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University, highlights the potential for a resurgence in colder months, driven by environmental factors conducive to viral transmission.

Recent research underscores the gravity of Covid-19's impact, even amidst declining hospitalization rates. A study published in JAMA found Covid-19 to be

deadlier than the flu, with a 35% higher risk of death among hospitalized patients. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing vaccination efforts and adherence to public health guidelines.

As we navigate the complexities of the pandemic, vaccination remains a cornerstone of defense against emerging variants. While existing vaccines may offer some protection against new variants, ongoing research and vaccine development efforts are crucial to staying ahead of the curve.

Looking ahead, the US Food and Drug Administration's upcoming vaccine advisory committee meeting in June will provide valuable insights into future vaccination strategies. In the meantime, experts urge continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures to mitigate the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

In conclusion, while the specter of new variants looms, informed decision-making and collective action remain our best defense against Covid-19. By staying informed, remaining adaptable, and prioritizing public health, we can navigate the challenges of the pandemic and pave the way for a safer, healthier future. NATIONAL: TRIUMPHANT JOURNEY: ED DWIGHT, ONCE AMERICA'S FIRST BLACK

ASTRONAUT, FINALLY SOARS INTO SPACE WITH BLUE ORIGIN

Houston Style Magazine celebrates the triumphant journey of Ed Dwight, who, after six decades, has finally soared into space. Once heralded as the United States' first Black astronaut, Dwight's remarkable story has come full circle with his flight on Blue Origin's 25th New Shepard mission.

On May 19, 2024, at 9:35 a.m. CDT, the 90-year-old retired Air Force Captain launched from Blue Origin's West Texas facility. Accompanied by five fellow passengers, Dwight reached an altitude of 65.8 miles (105.9 km), surpassing the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale's threshold for spaceflight. The brief but impactful journey ended ten minutes later with the New Shepard capsule, "RSS First Step,"

safely landing back near its launch site.

Reflecting on the experience, Dwight expressed profound gratitude and wonder. "I thought I really didn't need this in my life, but now I need this in my life," he shared upon landing. "It was a life-changing experience."

Dwight's path to space began in 1961, fueled by President John F. Kennedy's initiative to diversify NASA's astronaut corps. As the first Black airman at the Aerospace Research Pilot School, led by aviation legend Chuck Yeager, Dwight's potential was quickly recognized. He was among the select few recommended by the Air Force to join NASA.

Despite making headlines and receiving thousands of congratulatory letters, Dwight's journey hit a significant roadblock after Kennedy's assassination in 1963. Lacking crucial support, he was ultimately overlooked for NASA's fifth group of astronauts in 1966. It wasn't until 1983 that Guion "Guy" Bluford became the first Black American in space.

"I was on an upward trajecto-

ry until ... the president was killed," Dwight recalled. "It changed the whole play. The whole thing was turned on its head and all of a sudden, I found myself without a sponsor and was lost in the hinterlands."

Dwight's dreams were finally realized with the help of Space for Humanity, a non-profit dedicated to democratizing access to space. Supported by the Jaison and Jamie Robinson Foundation, Dwight's journey was made possible.

"Everybody needs to do this,"

Dwight emphasized after his return, highlighting the transformative power of the "Overview Effect," the cognitive shift experienced when viewing Earth from space. Former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, an executive producer on the documentary "The Space Race," which features Dwight's story, praised Space for Humanity for their role in making Dwight's spaceflight a reality.

SPORTS: HOUSTON ASTROS MAKE MAJOR MOVE TO STRENGTHEN AILING PITCHING STAFF WITH LAUER

The Houston Astros have made a significant and strategic move to bolster their pitching staff amidst early-season challenges. With key starters like Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez sidelined due to injuries, the Astros have signed former Milwaukee Brewers standout, Eric Lauer, to fortify their rotation. This acquisition is poised to have a substantial impact on the Astros' championship aspirations.

Eric Lauer's Arrival

The 29-year-old left-hander, Eric Lauer, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Astros organization. Last season, Lauer showcased his prowess on the

Eric Lauer

mound with a solid performance for the Brewers, posting a 4-6 record and a 6.56 ERA. Despite a challenging year, Lauer's track record in previous seasons speaks volumes about his potential impact. In both 2021 and 2022, he demonstrated consistency and effectiveness, maintaining respectable ERAs and showcasing his ability to rack up strikeouts while limiting walks. This history of success positions Lauer as a valuable asset for the Astros as they navigate their pitching woes.

A Journey of Perseverance

Lauer's journey to Houston has been marked by perseverance and deter-

mination. After a stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates' Triple-A affiliate earlier this season, where he showcased his talent with an impressive strikeout rate, Lauer seized the opportunity to explore new horizons. Now, with the Astros, he is poised to make his mark and contribute to the team's success on the field.

Strategic Vision

The Astros' decision to sign Lauer reflects their commitment to maintaining a competitive edge amidst adversity. With injuries plaguing their starting rotation, the addition of Lauer provides much-needed depth and versatility. As

General Manager Dana Brown notes, Lauer's potential impact aligns with the Astros' strategic vision for success.

Astros Fans' Excitement

Astros fans can look forward to seeing Lauer in action as he begins his tenure with the organization. While he may start with the Triple-A Sugar Land team, his journey to the major league roster holds promise for the team's pitching dynamics. With Lauer's talent and the Astros' determination, the sky's the limit for what this partnership can achieve.

A Pivotal Moment

As the Astros continue their quest for baseball glory, the addition of Eric Lauer represents a pivotal moment in the season. Readers of Houston Style Magazine, stay tuned as Lauer takes to the mound and showcases his skills in the Astros' colors. Together, fans can embark on this journey that is sure to be filled with excitement, determination, and the unwavering spirit of Astros pride. Cheer on the home team as they chase greatness on the diamond! For more information, visit Astros' Official Site.

LOCAL: BEE BUSY WELLNESS CENTER: BRIDGING GAPS IN LUPUS AWARENESS AND CARE FOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR

As May unfolds, it brings with it Lupus Awareness Month, shining a spotlight on a chronic autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects communities of color. Lupus, a complex condition that can affect various organs and systems in the body, poses significant challenges for diagnosis and management. Individuals from marginalized communities often face additional barriers to accessing timely and appropriate care, exacerbating the impact of the disease.

Lupus is a health disparity issue, with studies indicating that people of color, particularly African American, Hispanic, and Indigenous individuals, are two to three times more likely to develop lupus compared to their white counterparts. Lupus tends to be more severe and occur at a younger age in these populations. Despite

these disparities, awareness and understanding of lupus remain limited, contributing to delays in diagnosis and treatment.

One key challenge in addressing lupus is its elusive nature, with symptoms often mirroring those of other conditions or manifesting differently in each individual. As a result, diagnosing lupus can be a lengthy and frustrating process, spanning several years for some patients. This diagnostic odyssey not only prolongs suffering but also increases the risk of irreversible organ damage and complications.

In Houston, Texas, Bee Busy Wellness Center plays a vital role in bridging gaps in lupus awareness and care, particularly for communities of color. With a commitment to providing comprehensive medical services on a sliding scale fee, Bee Busy aims to ensure that individuals

facing financial constraints can access the care they need, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Bee Busy Wellness Center's approach to lupus care encompasses medical treatment, education, advocacy, and support services. Through community outreach initiatives and educational workshops, Bee Busy raises awareness about lupus symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection. By empowering individuals with knowledge, Bee Busy seeks to facilitate earlier recognition of lupus symptoms and prompt medical intervention.

The health center recognizes the importance of culturally competent care in addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by communities of color. The center's diverse team of healthcare professionals is trained to provide personalized care that respects cultural beliefs and values, fostering trust and engagement among patients.

The community's health is at the forefront of everything the health center does. By offering holistic services that address not only physical health but also mental, emotional, and social well-being, Bee Busy recognizes that optimal health outcomes require a comprehensive approach. Through partnerships with local organizations and advocacy efforts, the
