JUDGE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON AND GINNI THOMAS

L

ast week, two events involving the U.S. Supreme Court occurred.

First, four days of hearings surrounding the nomination and possible elevation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the nation's highest court.

Second, 29 dangerous and wacky emails sent from conservative activist Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows urging him to take illegal and unconstitutional actions to preserve Donald Trump's presidency.

Both involve politics and will impact the integrity of the Court.

President Joe Biden nominated Judge Jackson to be the first African American woman to serve on the nation's highest court. She appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee allegedly to answer questions about her views and qualifications to be confirmed.

Judge Jackson's qualifications appear impeccable: clerking for judges on all three federal levels of our courts, District, Appellate and Supreme Court; work as a federal public defender; confirmed three times by the U.S. Senate for service on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, a DC district judgeship, and as a DC appellate judge; highly intelligent; educational achievements that anyone would be proud of; and a deeply religious woman who has never been tainted by scandal or corruption of any kind.

One would expect legitimate and tough questions, and cogent and thoughtful answers, in order for senators and the American people to make a judgment about her appointment.

Not so for this partisan and equally divided committee of 22 Democrats and Republicans. Of the 11 Republicans, seven are from former slave states: Lindsey Graham, South Carolina; Tom Cotton, Arkansas; Ted Cruz, Texas; John Kennedy,

Louisiana; Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee; Tom Tillis, North Carolina, the former state senator wrote the voting rights legislation that an Appellate Court found targeted Black voters "with almost surgical precision"; and Josh Hawley of Missouri, a former slave state that did not join the Confederacy.

Those seven were the worst questioners and could not stop themselves from reflecting racism, sexism, past grievances, and bad manners.

Sen. Graham complained that his choice from South Carolina was not selected, constantly interrupted Judge Jackson, reminded Democrats of his grievance about how Democrats treated Judge Kavanaugh - without mentioning the accusation of a credible female witness accusing Kavanaugh of rape at a drunken party they attended in high school - inappropriately asked Judge Jackson about her religion, accused her of being an activist, attributed her nomination to being bankrolled by dark money from the radical left, used foul language, went way over his allotted time for questioning, had to be shut down by Chairman Durbin, and ended up storming out of the hearing.

Sen. Cruz tried to turn her into a Black radical who would use the Court to affirm "critical race theory." He asked her if she agreed with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's book "Antiracist Baby," "that babies are racist." He too got into a shouting match with Chairman Durbin. Sen. Blackburn demanded that Judge Jackson take a position on whether the Court should be expanded beyond the current nine, a political and policy question, not a question appropriate for a Supreme Court nominee.

The dominant question from virtually all the Republicans was her sentencing record, alleging she was soft on crimes involving child pornography.

Sen. Cotton accused her of being "soft on crime" and "soft on porn."

She also supported discredited QAnon conspiracy theories. It is thought that her "best friend" was Clarence Thomas, alone among the justices who voted against releasing Meadow's texts to the January 6 Select Committee that contained the texts from his

The questions now are whether she should testify before the January 6 Committee, demand that her husband rescind himself involving January 6 issues, resign or be impeached.

The Emmett Till Antilynching Act, which Rep. Al Green proudly co-sponsored, passed the House on February 28, 2022 with overwhelming bipartisan support. On Monday, March 7, 2022, it passed the Senate unanimously.

STATE: RUTH SIMMONS WILL REMAIN AT PRAIRIE VIEW A&M, CREATE NEW LEADERSHIP DIVERSITY PROGRAM

he Prairie View A&M President Ruth Simmons, who announced earlier this month she is stepping down, said on Wednesday she will remain at the historically Black university as a professor.

While it is fairly common for university presidents to transition to a faculty role upon their departure, Simmons will also help work with the university’s fundraising and research partnerships. She will also create a new higher education leadership program to improve diversity among top academic leaders.

“I believe this is the perfect solution, enabling her to devote time to her special interests and, at the same time, continue to play a leadership role in preparing the next generation of leaders,” Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp said in a statement.

Simmons, who became president of Prairie View in 2017, told The

Texas Tribune she approached Sharp last year about her plans to step down and the resulting transition.

“The basic work of running the university, there are a lot of small things that you get drawn into,” Simmons told the Tribune. “Frankly, at this juncture, I wanted to move away from that.”

During her tenure, the university increased donations to the school by 40%, according to the March 12 letter announcing her decision to step down when a successor is named. She also increased student scholarships. In 2020, billionaire MacKenzie Scott donated $50 million to Prairie View.

Simmons said she had always pledged to remain involved with the university, but said Sharp insisted on creating a formal arrangement. While there was some discussion as to whether Simmons would remain at the system or university level, Simmons said she want-

ed to ensure Prairie View remained her prime focus.

“I think that my students and others will be very disappointed if they think that I'm getting drawn off in other things,” Simmons said.

Ultimately, they landed on the idea of a leadership academy that would allow her to mentor students and future university leaders at the university, which is located about 50 miles from downtown Houston.

“I’m paying back for all the help I got as a young person,” she said.

“The people who stopped and went out of their way to help me and to give me advice. Honestly, I could never have done what I’ve done if they hadn't taken the time to do that.”

Simmons said she wants the program to provide personalized attention to women and people of color to help them overcome obstacles that may

prevent them from being considered for a leadership role.

As a professor, Simmons will not be attached to a single department, allowing her to lecture or collaborate across the university. As for the courses she might teach, Simmons suggested leadership courses in the business school.

Simmons previously served as president of Smith College in Massachusetts and Brown University, where she was the first Black woman to preside over an Ivy League school.

his Spring the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will host the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery tour of portraits of President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. The acclaimed portraits will be on view from April 3 through May 30, 2022.

“Not only do these iconic portraits feature history-making subjects but they were created by groundbreaking artists,” said Gary Tinterow, Director and Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. “The MFAH is excited to provide our visitors the opportunity to experience the power and beauty of these celebrated works in our museum.”

The paintings were commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and unveiled Feb. 12, 2018, in the presence of the Obamas and the artists. Wiley and Sherald are the first African American artists to have been selected for the Portrait Gallery’s official portraits of a President or First Lady. The two artists worked independently from one another; however, in painting these two portraits Wiley and Sherald effectively re-envisioned the centuries-long tradition of representing political leaders. Before photography, painted portraits often served as the primary image of a U.S. president. Today, our presidents and first ladies are constantly in the spotlight and

both formal and informa photographs of these subjects are ubiquitous throughout mass and popular media.

The two paintings present a striking contrast to the formality of earlier presidential portraits and images of first ladies. Both artists worked in close consultation with their sitters and used photographs as working tools as they planned their compositions. Her dress by Milly designer Michelle Smith carries meaning as well, referring to both the modernist traditions of abstract art and the traditional patterned quilts of Gee’s Bend.

LOCAL: THE NORMAL ANOMALY INITIATIVE, TO RECEIVE DONATIONS FROM LIL NAS X “BABY REGISTRY”

he Normal Anomaly Initiative, Inc., a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to assisting Black, queer+ people with overcoming barriers and ending stigmas and problematic narratives, today announced that rapper Lil Nas X’s Montero baby registry raised nearly $500,000 for grantees of Gilead Sciences, Inc.’s COMPASS Initiative® COMPASS grantees, organizations on the frontlines working to address the growing HIV epidemic in the Southern U.S. The Normal Anomaly Initiative supports its community by providing HIV tests, at-home

tests, transportation for appointments and job interviews, employment assistance opportunities, sexual education classes, sex positive, liberation and LGBTQ+ affirming trainings, and events to uplift Black, queer+ persons and their culture. Their latest initiative includes the Black Queer+ Advancement Festival (BQ+AF) taking place on April 30th that provides a safe space to celebrate being Black and LGBTQIA+.

Grammy award-winner Lil Nas X created his baby registry last September to celebrate the launch of his album Montero, connecting each of the album’s 13 songs to a different COMPASS organization and encouraging fans to donate. COMPASS organizations have helped more than 175,000 people access quality healthcare and trained 13,000 people to become HIV leaders and advocates in the Southern U.S., which continues to lead the nation for HIV diagnoses. Black Americans are only 13% of the overall population, yet account for 40% of new HIV diagnoses due to racism, social and economic marginalization, and other barriers to healthcare, housing and transportation.

“Communities all across the South, like my home state of Georgia, are being transformed by the work of COMPASS grantees,” Lil Nas X said. “The Montero baby registry was created to send resources to grassroots groups serving the

most vulnerable. Funds raised will go to people living with HIV and inspire a new generation of leaders who will keep pushing for HIV education and one day, a cure.”

After Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars for a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's medical condition, there are renewed conversations about toxic masculinity and concepts of feminine beauty.

or most women, their hair is their crowning glory. They take meticulously care of it making sure no one strand is out of place. Onlookers need not dare to touch it for fear of the backlash they would be sure to receive. Some women’s identity is even connected to their hair making it their crowning glory. In the Holy Bible in I Corinthians 11:10, the hair on a wife’s head is compared to an angel’s halo referencing it as a “symbol of authority.”

With hair having such an importance in a woman’s life, losing it can be very traumatic and can make a person extra sensitive about their outward appearance. Knowing all this is what is making Chris Rock’s joke and Will Smith’s reaction at the Oscars such a hot topic.

"Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2," joked comedian Rock during the 94th Academy Awards. Initially, Smith laughed but then his tone turned serious once he got the look from his wife Jada Pinkett Smith rolling her eyes at him. In what seemed like a split-second

decision, Smith jumped to his feet, charged to the stage, and plant a right-handed slap across Rock’s shocked face. The incident left the audience shock, stunned, and speechless. However, America is not.

Those who are Team Smith are praising him for standing up for his wife but are calling his actions unprofessional. Many are saying that his act tarnish is good guy image. The couple should have been prepared for such a joke being in the entertainment industry.

Team Rock fans are applauding him for the maturity he showed by not reacting back. He did not press charges, nor has he commented about the incident. Then there are some who are not in support of Rock saying he was very insensitive to Pinkett Smith and others who suffer with alopecia.

In all this something is being missed. Rock is a comedian.

Although it might have been in poor taste, Rock ultimately was doing what he was paid to do…tell jokes. Comedians are no stranger to

“I'm a comedian,” said Rock in a 2010 Huffington Post interview. “I'm here to make people laugh." He was commenting about the controversy surrounding his documentary Good Hair that stemmed from his own daughter who was struggling with her identity because she didn’t have “good hair.”

What is alopecia?

If Pinkett Smith did not have alopecia Rock’s joke would not have gotten this much attention. Joking about someone’s health is just bad business no matter the illness. Although alopecia is not an illness that is considered life threatening, it is one that can leave one severely depressed, have low self-esteem, and make them want to isolate themselves. No one can know the encourage it sometimes takes for one to face the world as a person with alopecia.

Alopecia is a general umbrella term for hair loss. There are five main types of alopecia. All with different ways in which they affect the body and utilize different treatments to help those who must live with it. There is no cure for alopecia. *Universalis - is hair loss all over the body. This is the rarest form of alopecia. *Totali - is hair loss on the scalp only. It is a more advanced stage alopecia. *Androgenic - is male or female pattern baldness. This most common form of alopecia affects millions of women and men and is hereditary. *Traction - is hair loss resulting from putting undo stress on the hair. *Areata - is the most common type of alopecia. It starts with several bald patches anywhere on the body. This is the type of hair loss that Pinkett Smith has.

Hair stylist Debbie Walker has gained a wealth of experience dealing with women with alopecia as licensed cosmetologist for over 30 years. She deals mainly with clients that have traction alopecia. This form of alopecia is self induced from tight hairstyles like braids and weaves. Walker generally does not do a lot of those type of styles for the reason of prolonged styling causing alopecia in some women.

Walker loves hair and prides herself on her clients’ healthy tresses. It at times can even stress her out when her clients are stressed out about their hair. More stress is worst for those with alopecia since the added stress can cause additional hair loss. “It is a painful thing to go through because our hair is our crown. You know if our hair is not looking right, we don’t even feel right. We can’t get dress. We can’t function right,” Walker said.

Her clients are lucky that she is their stylist if they suffer from hair loss as she has tools in her aerosol to help. Before beginning any treatment Walker stresses to clients that the process of hair recovery or growth is more like an oven process and not a microwave process. “People want results instantly and it is not an instant type of situation. You must take the time and be consistent and give the product a chance to work.” Clients must start a regime of good hair, diet, and exercise. Walker recommends having a diet rich with vitamin e and alkaline water. Too much acid in the diet will make hair dry and brittle. Alkaline water helps to reduce the acid in foods. In addition, alopecia suffers must have their hair maintain by a professional.

“YouTube is not a hair stylist,” laughed Walker.

Walker uses a rosemary system by Influence to help her clients with alopecia. Two treatments a month for about six to eight weeks are needed before some results of improvement are seen.

Treatments at Walker’s its.personal The Salon in Pearland cost $55 per application. The system consists of a specialized shampoo, conditioner, and stimulating spray, The spray is the key to stimulate new hair growth to push through the skin.

One of Walker’s clients is Kimberly Wright Jones. Five years ago, she started experiencing hair loss after she washed her hair one day. Initially she was very confused by it and brought her concerns to her sisters during one of their family talks. Her confusion was demystified since one of her sisters had already gone to a doctor and researched alopecia after her hair started to thin. The sister shared all her knowledge with Jones, and they determined they had a family history of alopecia.

Jones followed up with a dermatologist and she was officially diagnosed with alopecia two years ago. Hearing the diagnosis didn’t really rattle her all that much. She just wanted to know the next step and the method in which she wanted to treat it. Her discovery of various treatment led her to know that taking shots or medications like Rogaine was not something she wanted to do. Her solution has just been to cut all her hair off and have fun with styling wigs and wearing hats.

“I can be one person one day and another one on another day,” she laughed. “I am not my hair.”

“Me falling apart is not to help me not lose my hair because it is just something that is going to happen.” Jones continued, “I have learned to love myself inside and out, so it really didn’t matter (about my hair falling out). I learned how to self-love. No one is going love

me more than I love me.”

Rock’s joke at the Oscars really didn’t offend Jones and she thinks it is all in the way one took the joke. Having a husband heavily involved in the entertainment world, Jones knows entertainers like to entertain and Rock was just entertaining.

“She was on the front row and when you are on the front row and a comedian comes out its all game. It happens at every comedy show,” commented Jones.

According to Jones, it is all how one took the joke. She didn’t not see the joke as offensive but as a compliment to Pinkett Smith’s acting ability. When actress Demi Moore starred in G.I. Jane, she received a worst acting award. Jones thinks if Pinkett Smith starred in the role in a G.I. Jane 2 that she would elevate the level of the film. “She would be the perfect choice,” said Jones.

“G.I. Jane 2 with a Black woman coming out would have shown that we (Black women) are fierce.”

According to Jones, a more manly thing for Smith to have done was to call Rock out saying that he offended his wife and asked him to apologize. Slapping him on that platform was not good and she thinks Smith just reacted in the moment after seeing his wife’s reaction to the joke.

Whether Smith’s response was good or bad will continue to be an ongoing debate along with whether Rock was wrong for doing the joke or not. What is needed is for persons around the world to think before they speak, go through some sensitivity training, learn to love yourself, and maybe do a little bit of minding your own business for us all to get along. arren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, a $16 billion international social justice philanthropy, has been selected to be Prairie View A&M University’s 140th Spring Commencement Convocation speaker. The ceremony takes place Saturday, May 14, in PVAMU’s Panther Stadium. Nearly 1,000 students are expected to receive degrees.

Under Walker’s leadership, the Ford Foundation became the first non-profit in U.S. history to issue a $1 billion designated social bond to stabilize non-profit organizations in the wake of COVID-19.

Before joining Ford, Walker was vice president at Rockefeller Foundation. Previously, he was COO of Harlem’s Abyssinian Development Corporation.

Walker co-founded both the U.S. Impact Investing Alliance and the Presidents’ Council on Disability Inclusion in Philanthropy. He serves on many boards, including the National Gallery of Art, Carnegie Hall, the High Line, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History &

Created in the 1970s by legal scholars, Critical Race Theory (CRT) developed as a tool for scholarly analysis of the structural racial disparities that endure in our society and engender differential experiences of law and policy across lines of difference. The idea was to get us to think about racism as structural and systemic, as opposed to the more prevalent notion that racism manifests only through the thoughts and deeds of individuals. Today, the term has become political dynamite, blowing up controversies wherever deployed. This is especially true concerning how young people are taught social justice and equity in America. In many states, including Texas, lawmakers have passed legislation restricting how teachers can discuss current events, encourage civic engagement, and teach about America’s history of racism. This Round encourages artists to explore the curious case of how and why CRT, an analytical framework designed for graduate-level discourse, escaped the academy and became a cultural chimera and catch-all for personal assumptions and systems of belief about race, in public meetings, on social media, and among the pundit and political classes. Participating artists include Leah Gipson, David-Jeremiah, Adam W. McKinney, Tammie Rubin, Bradley Ward, ROUX, a collective comprised of Rabéa Ballin, Ann Johnson, Delita Martin, and Lovie Olivia, and a collaboration of members of the UHD Center for Critical Race Studies, Houston Young Lawyers Association, and Kindred Spirits Design Co.

Project Row Houses (PRH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people and enriching communities through engagement, art, and direct action. PRH was founded in 1993 to be a catalyst for transforming society through celebrating art and African American history and culture. Inspired by the work of German avant-garde artist Joseph Beuys and African-American painter Dr. John Biggers, the seven founders – James Bettison, Bert Long, Jr., Jesse Lott, Rick Lowe, Floyd Newsum, Bert Samples, and George Smith – purchased 22 historic shotgun-style row houses on two blocks in a disinvested neighborhood in Houston’s Historic Third Ward and began using the houses as spaces for thematic art interventions. The site, 39 structures over five city blocks, serves as home to numerous community initiatives, art programs, and neighborhood development activities. he 35th Annual Houston Art Car Parade Weekend presented by Team Gillman (April 7-10) announced Bun B as the grand marshal of the 2022 parade, slated to roll through downtown on Saturday, April 9. Bun B follows in the footsteps of luminaries such as Cheech Marin, Dan Aykroyd, J.J. Watt, The Art Guys, Annise Parker, Kinky Friedman, Lynn Wyatt and George Clinton, to name a few.

“It’s a great time to be Bun B in Houston,” laughed Bun B. He added, “It’s a great thing for families and we haven’t had a lot of

opportunities in Houston to really have a great event where everyone and their family could come out and enjoy it, but the Art Car Parade is going to provide us that and I’m so proud and honored to be the 2022 Grand Marshal.”

Bernard Freeman, aka “Bun B”, is known for being a Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist who hails from Port Arthur, Texas and is primarily associated with the Southern rap movement he helped pioneer as a founding member of the duo UGK (Underground Kingz) alongside fellow emcee Pimp C in the late eighties. He also has an affinity for car culture and is a known car enthusiast having participated many times in the 3000-mile six-day trip for car rally Gumball.

From selling millions of albums to Grammy nominations, changing academia, publishing, sneaker, food, and car culture, plus philanthropy, there isn’t much that Bun B hasn’t done. Now he can add grand marshal of Houston’s most storied parade to the list.

The announcement took place at the Art Car Parade’s Kickoff Party at The Ion innovation and community hub. The event, free and open to the public, which included over 50 Art Cars, window art and artistically rendered soccer balls. Guests were satiated by the popular food trucks, It’s a Wrap and El Topo. Drink sponsors for the evening included cold brews by Saint Arnold Brewing Company and bubbles by Perrier. The event atmosphere was kept lively via the musical stylings of DJ Chaney, who added his signature musical creativity to the visual creativity that was present in abundance both inside and outside of The Ion. “I was ecstatic to be able to bring Art Car to The Ion and to Houston’s innovation community via the 2022 Kickoff Event,”

noted Tommy Ralph Pace, Executive Director of the Orange Show of Visionary Art. He added, “The Art Car Parade and The Ion are aligned in their collective missions to bring together the entirety of the Houston community and celebrate it. When we approached The Ion about potentially hosting this event there, they were immediately on-board. It was great to have Art Cars descend upon the Ion District and enhance what The Ion and the Ion District are building from a public art perspective.”

Thirty-five years since it started in 1986 as a small gathering of 20 artists and a little over a thousand fans, Houston’s Art Car Parade maintains its place as one of the city’s largest free public events, drawing hundreds of thousands of curious spectators to see, hear and revel in the magic of Art Cars. This year, the annual Spring event will feature a large contingent of ‘slow, loud, & bangin’ masterpieces – slab cars born out of Houston’s unique contribution to American car culture whose notoriety over the past decade has brought it to the forefront of popular culture – and more than 100 new and never-before-seen Art Cars from around the country like Riders, bike and skater groups, wheeled contraptions, bejeweled roadsters and custom-crafted classics along with the fur-covered, metal-modified, fire-breathing varieties.

SPORTS: NO DAYS OFF FOR ROCKETS ROOKIE DAISHEN NIX

s the media walked into the end of the Houston Rockets morning shootaround at American Airlines Arena, two players were locked into a fierce but friendly trash-talking three-point shooting competition. Every shot that went up had words that followed the ball towards the basket.

The game became popular by former point guard D.J. Augustin, who competed with his past teams. The rules state that a player must make three consecutive shots from one spot to advance.

Once we got closer to the court, most media members were not surprised that one of the voices talking the most was rookie Josh Christopher. He has stated on numerous occasions that the competition, along with the guidance of Augustin, helped him improve his three-point shot during his rookie season.

The other player we noticed was familiar to all of us but unfamiliar when it came to competing in the game. Rookie guard Daishen Nix was hitting shot after shot, and as he watched each one go through the hoop, his confidence and tone of voice increased. Nix would eventually win the competition, which he told Christopher he would at every spot they shot from.

“I only let you win because I didn’t want to send you into your interview mad,” Christopher screamed out as Nix made his way toward me.

“See what I have to go through,” said Nix with a smile.

“He is going to keep saying that until we play again because that is the competitor he is, and it actually brings out the best in me to go against him.”

Rockets’ active roster. The undrafted rookie who has split his time between Houston and G League affiliate Rio Grande Valley knows that he has to take advantage of every opportunity to display his skill set.

“I learned that there are no days off,” Nix said when asked about his lessons over the season. “I am not playing that much, so I can’t take a day off. Every day is a working day for me, especially since I am a rookie. Coming in and working every single day and just getting extra reps just in case my name is called.”

In February, the Rockets showed their commitment to the Anchorage, Alaska, native by converting his two-way contract into a four-year, $6 million contract. His consistent performance with the Vipers could not be ignored by head coach Stephen Silas and his staff. He was named G League Player of the Week in January after averaging 27.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in a four-game span.

“My main goal in the G League was to get my teammates involved because I know when I get called up by coach Silas, I am supposed to be that point guard,” said Nix. “I know that I was not going to be taking 20 shots a game like I did with the Vipers. So, me going back down to the G League developing into a pass first point guard helped me a lot coming back up.”

Nix will benefit from the remaining six games left in the season. The Rockets coaching staff plans to evaluate some of its younger talents by resting veterans Eric Gordon, Dennis Schröder, and Christian Wood.
