s it turns out, Rihanna does have her money.

The 34-year-old is now the youngest self-made female billionaire in the United States after amassing a net worth of $1.4 billion, according to Forbes’ 2022 list. Her impressive milestone comes more than three years after the outlet bestowed the much-coveted title to Kylie Jenner, who is estimated to have a current net worth of $600 million.

According to Forbes, Rihanna — as co-owner of Fenty Beauty and holder of 30 percent stake in her Savage x Fenty lingerie line — is also her native Barbados’ first billionaire, as well as the only woman under 40 on this year’s list of female billionaires in the U.S. Her net worth may soon go up, too. The singer, who recently welcomed her first child with A$AP Rocky, has been teasing that she has new music in the works.

“I’m looking at my next project completely differently from the way I had wanted to put it out before.

I think this way suits me better, a lot better,” she told Vogue. “It’s authentic, it’ll be fun for me, and it takes a lot of the pressure off.”

However, that doesn’t mean Kylie’s fortune isn’t just as impressive. As the Forbes notes, the 24-year-old Kardashians star is still the youngest member on its list of America›s richest self-made women, which also consists of Tay-

lor Swift ($570 million) and Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd ($740 million). The ranking marks Kylie›s fifth consecutive year on the list.

Back in March 2019, Kylie held the title of youngest self-made billionaire after signing a distribution deal with beauty retailer Ulta for Kylie Cosmetics products, which were then only available online or at pop-up shops, to be sold at their locations. At the time, Forbes reported that the strategic move helped edge Kylie Cosmetics’ estimated worth to “at least” $900 million, making its founder a billionaire.

The Kylie Cosmetics mogul saw more money signs in November 2019 when she agreed to sell 51 percent of the beauty brand to Coty Inc. for $600 million. The deal valued her business at about $1.2 billion.

But in May 2020, Forbes published an article saying that their staff «recalculated Kylie›s net worth and concluded that she is not a billionaire,» but rather a «more realistic accounting of her personal fortune puts it at just under $900 million.»

Still, Kylie wasn’t fazed with her title being revoked and said, «I can name a list of 100 things more important right now than fixating on how much money I have.»

“I am blessed beyond my years,” she tweeted shortly after the article came out, «I have a beautiful daughter, and a successful business and I’m doing perfectly fine.”

THE SUPREME COURT'S RIGHT-WINGED CRUSADE

T

his week, the right-wing majority on the Supreme Court ignored precedent, and trampled law and legal procedure to gut the Environmental Protection Agency’s primary mission: the ability to curb pollution of harmful substances. It thereby erected a judicial roadblock to dealing with catastrophic climate change even as the alarming threat grows worse.

The Court zealots reached their decision even though there was no regulation in place for the court to review, thereby scorning the very basis of judicial authority - that it is reviewing a case or controversy. The majority, as Justice Elena Kagan wrote in her dissent, “could not wait - even to see what the new rule says - to constrain EPA’s efforts to address climate change.”

The majority reached a decision, despite the fact that the very text of the statute - the Clean Air Act - clearly gives EPA the authority to act to regulate emissions. As Kagan wrote, “the current court [majority] is textualists only when it suits it.” When a text conflicts with its broader ideological goals, it simply invents doctrines that it uses to ignore the congressional will.

This example of judicial wilding comes on the heels of Justice Alito’s venomous reversal of Roe v. Wade, stripping women of a right that had been confirmed by the Supreme Court for a half a century. Next up, the Court’s majority announced that it would hear a case giving state legislatures the right to make rules for elections, even if they violate state constitutions. That would open up elections to the very tampering that Donald Trump sought in overturning the 2022 presidential election on the basis of utterly unfounded charges of fraud.

Edward Kennedy when the Senate voted to deny a right-wing ideologue, Robert Bork, a seat on the Court: “Robert Bork’s America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens’ doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution, writers and artists would be censored at the whim of government, and the doors of the federal courts would be shut on the fingers of millions of citizens for whom the judiciary is often the only protector of the individual rights that are the heart of our democracy.”

nation than Robert Bork thinks,” Kennedy said. Now, however, six Bork equivalents drive a Court majority that is hellbent on turning us into Robert Bork’s America.

The only recourse to a Court run wild is democracy. But the Court in a series of decisions has undermined our democracy. It decided that money was speech, opening the doors to the big money politics that distorts our elections. It decided that corporations were persons, empowering corporations to throw unlimited money into elections. It decided not to limit partisan gerrymandering, even if it led to utterly mis-representative legislatures, often sabotaging the votes of people of color. It gutted the Voting Rights Act, even though the Congress had just re-authorized it by overwhelming bipartisan majorities.

Now it is on the verge of allowing state legislatures - because Republicans con-

trol 30 of them - to set election rules that violate even state constitutions.

These ruinous decisions are the modern-day equivalent of the disastrous Supreme Court decisions that added to the tensions that led to the Civil War, and after the war, embraced “separate but equal” - the invented doctrine of that legalized segregation -- American apartheid for 100 years.

Will we elect congressional majorities willing finally to limit the threat posed by this judicial wilding?

Various reforms are sensible: Impose term limits on judges so that they cannot counter the overwhelming majority for decades at a time. Expand the number of justices so that the three appointed by minority presidents can’t speak for the majority. Restate clearly Congress’s imperative need to delegate authority to expert agencies and force the Court to reverse its utterly unprincipled decision.

What’s clear is that an unelected majority on the Supreme Court has launched a right-wing crusade that threatens basic rights and the core principles of the America a vast majority supports. Now that majority must mobilize, vote and speak clearly to demand that course be reversed.

COMMENTARY: Start Now To Take Back Supreme Court Unfortunately, Overturning 'Roe' Is Just One Harmful Decision by The 'Trump' Court Commentary By Ben Jealous for StyleMagazine.com

D

id you ever wonder whether elections really matter? Well, the Trump Supreme Court majority has answered that question for good.

Or, more accurately, they have answered it for bad.

In the term that has just ended, the new far right-wing majority on the Supreme Court went on a rampage.

They have torn up decades of legal precedent to diminish Americans’ rights and legal protections. To justify the results they wanted, they lied in their rulings the way some of them lied to get on the court. It has been a shameful display of power politics disguised as judging.

Not surprisingly, the most attention has been paid to the Court majority overturning the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade decision. A constitutional right that has made a huge difference in the lives of generations of women was wiped away. The impact will be devastating and deadly.

Millions of individuals and couples dealing with unwanted pregnancies, the trauma of rape or incest, life-threatening pregnancy complications, or

even a miscarriage that some intrusive government official decides is suspicious, will have their options severely limited or eliminated entirely.

We know that those restrictions and their consequences will fall most harshly on already vulnerable people, including Black people, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and low-income people. Already in Missouri, a major health care system will no longer treat rape victims with emergency contraception because the state abortion ban puts medical care providers at legal risk.

Anti-abortion state legislators seem to be in competition to see who can pass the most extreme, intrusive, and controlling laws. Some are even trying to limit people’s right to travel from one state to another, targeting anyone who helps a person from a state that bans abortion get care in a state that permits it. It reminds me of the old fugitive slave laws that forced free states to help slave states deny people their freedom.

Unfortunately, overturning Roe is just one of the harmful decisions handed down by the Trump Court.

The Court intervened in voting rights cases to protect gerrymandering designed to limit Black voters’ access to political power. This comes on top of other rulings gutting the Voting Rights Act. The Trump Court went after sensible regulation of guns. The farright justices overturned a New York law more than 100 years old that required people to show a good cause to get a permit to carry concealed firearms. Communities that are already suffering from the effects of gun crime are likely to experience even greater violence now that the court has robbed public officials of options and given the extremist pro-gun political agenda the power of law.

How did we get here? Simple. Thanks to the anti-democratic Electoral College, Donald Trump was elected in 2016 even though almost three million more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton. Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell prevented the Senate from even considering President Barack Obama’s Supreme

Court nomination so that Trump could fill it instead—and then rushed Trump’s third justice onto the court even as voters were casting ballots to remove Trump from office. Behind Trump and McConnell was a massively funded, decades-long campaign to build the political power to take control of the judiciary.

In other words, winning the presidency and controlling the Senate gave the far right the power to force its harmful agenda on the American public long after voters rejected Trump. Taking the Court back from the extremists who now control it will be a long-term project. It starts with this year’s elections.

ayor Sylvester Turner recently announced the appointment of Diann L. Lewter to the Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) Board of Directors.

Lewter is a business development leader in Houston’s commercial real estate and public sectors and has an extensive history of volunteer service throughout the community.

This will be Lewter’s second appointment on the METRO board. Previously, she held Position 4 from January 2014 – to April 2016, representing the City of Houston. During this time, she co-chaired the Public Safety and Real Estate Committees and served on the Government Affairs, People, and Capital Programs Committees.

harlene Ward Johnson is the newly elected trustee to the Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees. She officially joined the college’s governing board as the trustee for District II following a brief swearing-in ceremony Wednesday, June 29, at 3100 Main St. in Houston.

Texas State Representative Jarvis Johnson (District 139) administered the oath of office to the new trustee in a ceremony attended by U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, other distinguished guests, family and friends.

Trustee Johnson was elected to the HCC Board of Trustees following a runoff election held Saturday, June 18.

She will fill the unexpired term in the single-member district through December 31, 2025.

Governing the nation’s fifth largest public community college system, members of the HCC governing board are elected to staggered six-year terms and serve without compensation.

Mayor Turner Appoints New Director Of Office For People With Disabilities

ayor Sylvester Turner has appointed Angel Ponce as the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) Director, which provides services and advocacy for Houston residents with disabilities.

He will replace Gabe Cazares who is leaving municipal government for a role in the non-profit sector.

Ponce is a bilingual advocacy and government professional with 11 years of experience in city government.

He worked as the Senior Community Engagement Liaison at MOPD between 2014 to 2021.

In 2004, Ponce suffered a spinal cord injury resulting from an automobile wreck. He is now a wheelchair user.

“As a staunch advocate for the disability community, Angel understands the importance of equal participation and full inclusion of all citizens, including citizens with disabilities,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “I look forward to working with him to ensure that the City continues to be more accessible and inclusive for all Houstonians.”

As a Senior Community Engagement Liaison for MOPD, Ponce provided management support to the Houston Commission on Disabilities (HCOD), served as a translator between legal department attorneys and Spanish-speaking residents, conducted disability awareness workshops for employers and disability etiquette and educational presentations for youth and professionals. He also provided management support in the City of Houston Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office from 2008 to 2014.

Ponce was co-founder of the National Coalition for Latinxs with Disabilities (CNLD) and is currently the Chair for the United Way of Greater Houston, Interagency Information and Referral Network. He holds an associate degree from Lone Star College and is currently attending the University of Houston pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies with a minor in Management and Leadership.

ecently, Chevrolet and the National Newspaper Publishers Association enter their sixth year of collaboration with the “Discover the Unexpected” program, amplified with program ambassador, and American actor, model and entertainer, Terrence Jenkins, better known as Terrence J. “As a graduate of North Carolina, A&T State University with a mass communication degree, I understand the value of historically black colleges and universities, which is why I am passionate about this opportunity and eager to engage with up-and-coming HBCU students pursuing journalism and marketing,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins will kick off students’ fellowship experience in New Orleans, following the NNPA convention that includes a Chevrolet Bolt EUV adventure challenge to promote team building and education surrounding electrification,

DTU provides 11 students from around the nation internships and scholarships to explore marketing roles focused on General Motors’ vision for an all-electric future and journalism through NNPA. Chevrolet placed five students within different areas of the marketing function to gain experience in content creation, media integration and strategy development. The NNPA placed six stu-

dents with renowned publications across the country to focus on digital and social content creation, in addition to covering events such as the NNPA conference in New Orleans.

Crossovers and SUVs will be prioritized in the initial phase of Lexus’ new era, meaning it could be 2030 before we see the production version of this unnamed supercar EV. Lexus promises the electric

Lexus’s chief branding officer, Koji Sato, had the following to say (via AutoCar UK): “The endless pursuit of the Lexus driving signature will move to the next stage through development of the new sports battery EV.” Mr. Sato also stated that the electric supercar “symbolizes the future of the brand”. In terms of performance, Lexus is aiming for a 0-62 mph time in the low 2-second range. Meanwhile, a 435-mile range is targeted.

Lexus also has two production EVs on display at Goodwood, the RZ 450e SUV and the recently facelifted UX 300e crossover.

he McNay Art Museum’s mission to engage a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts takes shape this summer in the form of a new interactive studio opening Friday, July 1, in the Museum’s AT&T Lobby. Visitors are invited to reflect, co-create, and share experiences through engaging activities centered around artwork in the Museum’s permanent collection in collaboration with an inaugural studio artist.

“We wanted everyone to see and feel our community-driven mission the moment they walked through the door,” said Richard Aste, McNay Director and CEO. “As San Antonio’s place of beauty and belonging, we’ve made tremendous progress outdoors in removing all visual barriers to the McNay experience; the Studio brings

that momentum indoors and deepens our commitment to the South Texas community we proudly serve.”

Building on the Museum’s recent improvements to its grounds through a $6.25 million Landscape Master Plan, the Studio’s design reflects the lush gardens throughout the McNay’s 25-acre campus and its signature architectural elements. The McNay’s oasis-like environment extends indoors through a unique build out conceived by The DoSeum Design Studios, in concert with McNay education, curatorial, and operations staff.

“This unique space invites visitors of all ages to engage with the McNay’s world-class art collection in a new and experiential way,” said

Meredith Doby, Vice President of Exhibits and lead of DoSeum Design Studios. “Visitors are welcomed into in a site-specific experience infused with surrealist natural elements, curiosity-driven interactives, and a personalized interaction with the collection.”

Activities in the Studio are designed to facilitate learning, inspiration, and innovation through shadow play, exhibition design, discovery boxes, community reflection prompts, and more. Alongsideobjectsfrom the permanent collection, San Antonio artists will present artwork responding to a thematic prompt.

All activities can be explored at the visitor’s own pace, allowing for a self-guided experience. In the

future, the Studio will hold artist-led workshops, programming, and exhibition-related community engagement opportunities. Access to the Studio is included with general admission and is free every Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., and on the first Sunday of every month.

Funding for the Studio is generously provided by the Greehey Family Foundation, Bank of America, and the Smothers-Bruni Foundation.
