Stay home when you are sick with fever, coughing, and sneezing

•

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for 20 seconds upon first arriving to work, after using the restroom, before and after eating and frequently throughout the day. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

•

Provide alcohol based (60%) hand sanitizers for use for both employees and customers by placing them at convenient/accessible locations

•

Use sanitizing solution (i.e., one teaspoon of unscented household bleach in a gallon of cool water) to frequently sanitize commonly touched surfaces and objects such as electronics, door knobs, faucet handles, counter tops, cash machine key pads, dining tables frequently throughout the day. Change the sanitizing solution at least once every four hours

•

Consider temporarily limiting self-serve operations. Examples of such operations include; salad bars, buffets and dispensers. Replace utensils frequently (approximately hourly) during peak use hours for self-serve style operations

•

Ensure dishwasher and/or three-compartment sinks are used properly and have the appropriate level of sanitizer for final rinse (50-100 PPM chlorine-based sanitizer, follow product label for other approved sanitizers)

•

Ensure sneeze guards are in place where required

•

Health Care Is A Human Right

W

ho is going to pay for this? For months that question was used as a weapon against supporters of Medicare for All. Now, it is on everyone’s mind as they worry about the costs of the testing and treatment for the coronavirus. The virus is highly contagious. We need everyone with symptoms to get tested and all with the virus to get treatment. If anyone hesitates because they fear they can’t afford the cost, they put the rest of us at risk. No one should be worried about the costs of treatment.

Those costs, however, are going to be staggering, particularly if the fears of the administration’s leading expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, are realized and a million or more may become infected with the disease.

Hospitalization and treatment will cost hundreds of billions. The average cost of hospitalization for pneumonia patients is about $20,000, but many coronavirus patients tend to need to stay on ventilators longer and fight off more complications than pneumonia patients.

Across the country, Americans are terrified at the potential costs if they get sick. Twenty-seven million Americans have no health insurance at all. Four in 10 working Americans have a high-deductible plan that forces them to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket before they get benefit from the premiums taken out of the paychecks each week. A 2009 Harvard Medical School study estimated that every year an estimated 45,000 people in the U.S. die because of lack of health care coverage. Many suffer because they put off necessary treatment because they can’t afford it. Now, as Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif) put it, “The reality is, there are a lot of people that are thinking, ‘I don’t want a couple thousand-dollar bill to get tested or get treated.’”

The rescue bill just passed by Congress covers

the costs of testing. Trump promised that any cost of treatment would also be covered, but the insurance lobby immediately corrected him. Since then, under immense pressure, Cigna and Humana have joined CVS Aetna insurance in agreeing to waive patient cost-sharing on treatment for those insured.

In any case, insurers admit, if the costs soar, they will factor it into the cost of plans next year. As Peter Lee, the head of Covered California, an independent state agency, noted, insurers are likely to seek rates next year that are double their additional costs from the virus.

If costs go up 20 percent, rates could jump as much as 40 percent. That could mean, he warned “that many of the 170 million Americans in the commercial market may lose their coverage and go without needed care.”

The insurers will sustain their profits; it’s the patients who will suffer.

The government is investing billions to develop a vaccine for the virus, and to develop other drugs that can help treat it. Yet, because the government turns over any drug developed to the private pharmaceutical companies, Health Secretary Alex Azar -- a former lobbyist for the drug companies -- said he couldn’t guarantee that the treatments would be affordable. Already, as the Intercept reported, bankers are goading drug companies to prepare to raise prices to benefit from the expected demand.

The U.S. spends about twice as much per capita for its patchwork health-care system than most industrialized countries. Why were we caught with such shortages of masks, ventilators or hospital beds?

A central reason is that about $500 billion of what we spend on health care each year doesn’t go to health care. It is wasted on costly bureaucracies needed to bill

Dr. Anthony Fauci – Director of NIAID the maze of private insurers or track down patients for their co-pays. It goes to hundreds of billions in profits for insurance companies and drug companies. It goes to excessive CEO salaries rising to 80 million or so a year.

In the end, the federal government will and should step up to cover the costs of all testing and treatment for the pandemic. It will have to reimburse states to cover soaring Medicaid and hospital costs. It will pay for developing the necessary drugs. It will pay for the costs of covering seniors under Medicare. It will pay for the costs incurred by those without insurance or with employer-based insurance. Yet, in part because of this, the insurance companies and drug companies will keep racking up record profits.

Beyond The Rhetoric 861: COVID-19 Is Scary

O

ur son, Harry, came to our home to bring us fresh fruit – red apples, bright yellow bananas – and rustic wheat bread. Thomas brought huge boxes of Gatorade and sparkling water.

That’s not unusual. But the circumstances had changed. We met outdoors in the driveway, we stood 6 feet apart.

We didn’t hug or kiss. We called out “I love you” above the noise of the wind.

Thomas admonished us to use the disposable gloves he purchased for us. He promised to return with the much-needed toilet paper. It seems that toilet paper was one of the fastest selling products.

To our immense delight Little Harry brought our 2-year-old grandson to “visit” on the driveway. Big Harry’s first instinct was to move in the direction of his grandson, but I held his hand and reminded him about coronavirus (COVID-19). He instead waved at

the baby and admired his new shoes and rabbit ears from a distance and blew kisses.

Having just been d i s c h a rg e d from the hospital, and having limited access to news, Harry is still trying to wrap his head around the enormity of this virus.

The truth is I’m still trying to comprehend the situation. Many Americans are trying to do the same. As of today the number of deaths in the United States surpasses that of 9/11.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov) describes Coronaviruses as a large family of viruses. Some cause illness in people, and others, such as canine and feline coronaviruses, only infect animals.

Rarely, animal coronaviruses that infect animals have emerged to infect people and can spread between people. This is suspected to have occurred for the virus that causes COVID-19.

This virus was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

The first infections were linked to a live animal market, but the virus is now

spreading from person-to-person. It’s important to note that person-to-person spread can happen on a continuum.

Some viruses are highly contagious (like measles), while other viruses are less so.

The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected. To avoid being infected, the CDC offers this advice:

+ Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.

+ Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

+ Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

+ Put distance between yourself and other people if

COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.

Harry is in the high-risk group since he has a history of heart disease and diabetes. And in his recent hospital stay he was intubated two times as many COVID-19 sufferers must endure. So, we are especially vigilant about social distancing-the act of keeping 6ft away from people not living in your household. We don’t leave our home. Our groceries are mainly delivered, although that may take days since it seems everybody is using home delivery services.

Governor Greg Abbott, Mandating A Self-Quarantine For Out-Of-State Arrivals

he Governor issued a proclamation regarding his prior Executive Order mandating a self-quarantine for individuals arriving from the New York Tri-State Area and New Orleans, Louisiana.

WHEREAS, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, issued a disaster proclamation on March 13, 2020, certifying under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) poses an imminent threat of disaster for all counties in the State of Texas; and

WHEREAS, on March 26, 2020, Executive Order GA-11 imposed a mandatory self-quarantine of 14 days for air travelers flying to Texas from certain areas experiencing substantial

community spread of COVID-19; and WHEREAS, Executive Order GA-11 provided that additional states or cities could be added to that mandatory selfquarantine by proclamation thereafter.

Houston ISD Relaunches Grab and Go Meals Program On Monday, April 6, 2020

he Houston Independent School District is relaunching its Grab and Go Curbside Meals Program on Monday, April 6, 2020.

The relaunch will continue HISD and the Houston Food Bank working together, but with Hexser T. Holliday Food Services Support Facility as the central hub and with increased safety measures. Each site will have 500 meals per day.

As families arrive at the sites, staff members will fill out a required food assistance form for them to Houston ISD Relaunches Grab and Go Meals on Monday, April 6minimize interpersonal contact. Boxed meals will then be placed in the trunks of vehicles. Families who walk to the sites must also adhere to social distancing requirements.

Governors are pleading for supplies for inundated hospitals, as cases in the US hit more than 215,000.

Today, the death toll topped 5,000 nationwide -- with over 1,300 fatalities in New York City.

NY Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo issued a warning: “This is not just New York.” As the state’s toll mounts, he urged Americans to take the virus seriously, saying the country would be living with the consequences of the outbreak for a long time. “I don’t think we get back to normal,” Cuomo said.

“I think we get to a new normal.”

Trump condemning anti-Asian discrimination and violence linked to COVID-19. The Houston Congressman and 29 of his colleagues sent a letter to President Trump condemning anti-Asian discrimination and violence linked to COVID-19 on Wednesday.

He added, “I must thank my colleagues for working to send a clear and uniform message: This virus does not discriminate—people do. It is incumbent upon all of us to denounce hatred and bigotry in all its forms and ensure the safety and well-being of those communities that may be unfairly targeted.”

Congresswoman Judy Chu – Chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus – added, “As coronavirus has spread, so has anti-Asian bigotry. In recent weeks, there has been an alarming rise in anti-Asian hate crimes across the country, with some people even needing to be hospitalized for attacks they have sustained simply because their race. ally made things worse by intentionally stoking xenophobia and anger. Insisting on using terms like ‘Wuhan virus,’ as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has, or directing blame and anger at China and calling it the ‘Chinese Virus,’ as the President has, puts Asian Americans at risk. MEET THE PRESS: Randall Cobb Holds Press Conference

T

he Coronavirus pandemic has altered the sports world and caused it to adjust in some very unconventional ways unseen by the sports media. Newly acquired Texans wide receiver, Randall Cobb held his press conference via teleconference instead of in person with local sports media last week.

Cobb was signed by Houston to a $27 million contract over the next three years, with a $19 million guaranteed signing bonus. He spent eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Dallas Cowboys on last season where he was very productive with 55 receptions, 828 yards receiving, and averaged over 15 yards per reception.

Cobb alluded to his health being one of the main reasons he was able to be very explosive last season.

“I think the biggest thing was the offseason workout that I went through with Dallas,” said Cobb who was limited to just nine games in 2018 due to injuries. “Being able

to build that strength and stay on the field, I felt really, really good.

Probably the best I’ve felt in the past five or six years.”

The former Pro-Bowl wide receiver knows that he will not be a fan favorite right away. Cobb was signed days after Houston traded away future first-ballot Hall of Fame wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson and draft picks.

“A lot of people are looking at me coming in and being a replace-

ment, even though me and DeAndre [Hopkins] are two totally different types of receivers,” said Cobb.

One reason he was attracted to the Texans was their ability to get into the postseason four out of the past five years and the opportunity to receive more touches in the offensive game plan in Houston than he received in Dallas. Well, that and the opportunity to play with one of the rising stars at the quarterback position in Deshaun Watson.

“I think when you look at Deshaun [Watson] and what he’s been able to do since he’s been in the league, I’ve been really impressed from afar watching him,” Cobb said to the media. “He has tremendous ability, he’s a winner. He’s won at every level, from high school to college. I think he has that ability to take us to a Super Bowl and I want to be a part of something special with him.”

Watson will also have some adjusting to do as it will be the first

time in his NFL career that he won’t have his favorite wide receiver option (Hopkins) on the field. What he will have is a wide receiver group built around speed (Will Fuller), elusiveness (Kenny Stills), and reliability (Cobb) all on the field at one time. Combine that with some talented college wide receivers that will be available to the Texans when they draft in the second round at number 40, and you have a recipe for another AFC South title.

omcast has teamed with Common Sense Media to make free educational content available.

There are almost 2,000 hours of titles for its Xfinity customers with kids in K-12 via Xfinity on Demand, the company said.

That includes content from Bluprint and CuriositySstream, as well as content from Animal Planet, History, Nick Jr., PBS KIDS, Smithsonian Channel, and podcasts on everything from yoga and cooking to fitness and gardening.

Spanish-language programming is also available from Discovery Familia

and others.

Comcast also said it has enlisted a psychologist and educator to curate the content based on grade appropriate guidelines.

“Today Xfinity is making thousands of hours of educational programming and resources available to our customers through Xfinity on Demand as we know how challenging it is for families right now who are suddenly homeschooling young children – many with both parents working, as well,” said Rebecca Heap, SVP of video and entertainment at Comcast, in a statement.

ighteen months might sound like a long time, but in vaccine years, it’s a blink. That’s the long end of the Trump administration’s time window for developing a coronavirus vaccine, and some leaders in the field say this is too fast -- and could come at the expense of safety.

The estimated time made headlines last month, when Trump remarked at a televised Cabinet Room meeting with pharmaceutical executives that a vaccine could be ready in «three to four months.» There, in front of TV cameras, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), poured cold water on Trump’s estimate, saying it would be more like a year to a year and a half.

Ever since, that estimate of 12-18 months has become gospel, its appearance in media stories ubiquitous.

But medical experts and scientists with firsthand experience developing vaccines are skeptical.

“Tony Fauci is saying a year to 18 months -- I think that’s optimistic,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, a leading expert on infectious disease and vaccine development at Baylor College of Medicine. «Maybe if all the stars align, but probably longer.»

Dr. Paul Offit, the co-inventor of thesuccessful rotavirus vaccine, put it more bluntly.

“When Dr. Fauci said 12 to 18 months, I thought that was ridiculously optimistic,” he told CNN. “And I’m sure he did, too.”

Vaccines development typically measured in years, not months

As the number of U.S. coronavirus deaths surges past 3,000, the pressure on the scientific community to find a vaccine is immense. In just a few weeks, the virus has jammed the gears of a robust economy and destroyed 3.3 million jobs. Fear is off the charts, and with that comes the pressure to find a fix yesterday.

“I don’t think it’s ever been done at an industrial scale in 18 months,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar focused on emerging infectious disease at the Center for Health Security at Johns Hopkins University. «Vaccine development is usually measured in years, not months.»

Vaccine trials typically start with testing in animals before launching into a three-phase process.
