The event, taking place Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 2:45 PM at the Sheraton Times Square in NYC, promises to be a defining moment in the national dialogue on criminal justice reform—a conversation as crucial as ever in the wake of the 2024 elections, where public safety and systemic reform took center stage. This high-profile session is just the opening act.
Immediately following the chat, the stage will ignite with a powerhouse panel discussion featuring some of the most dynamic legal minds in the country:

COMMENTARY
Dorothy Gibbs chanted “save our parks” from her wheelchair while holding a sign that read “97 years old, still fighting for public lands!”
She was among an estimated 900 protesters who turned out at Rocky Mountain National Park on March 1 to protest the Trump administration’s mass firings of National Park Service staff last month, conducted through the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headed by Elon Musk. Those 900 were among thousands of Americans who joined protests across the country that day at hundreds of national parks and monuments that day.
Gibbs, perhaps the oldest protester out that day, said for her “it’s personal.” She has volunteered with the National Park Service for 22 years and says her grandfather Charles F. Scott built Rocket Mountain National Park’s oldest remaining cabin. And she – like millions of others across the country – is concerned about the public’s ability to access our national parks.
That access is every American’s birthright. These sanctuaries offer more than breathtaking landscapes; they provide a refuge for the soul, a place where individuals from all walks of life can find solace, inspiration, and a connection to something greater than themselves in nature.
However, the recent mass firings within the National Park Service (NPS) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have cast a shadow over these treasured lands. One of the opening salvos of the DOGE-led assault on our public lands was to terminate approximately 1,000 NPS employees and 3,400 Forest Service workers. This decision threatens not only the livelihoods of dedicated public servants but also the very essence of our national parks.
The importance of our national parks cannot be overstated. They serve as living classrooms, offering educational programs that enlighten visitors about ecology, history, and conservation. They are economic engines, attracting millions of tourists annually, and supporting local communities – not to mention providing a vital revenue source for the government. Most importantly, they are democratic

spaces where every American, regardless of background, can experience the healing power of nature.
In fact, diversity in our national parks is a tradition as old as the parks themselves. It was the famed African American Buffalo Soldiers who served as the first rangers for America’s early national parks like Yosemite and Sequoia.
The writer and historian Wallace Stegner said, “The national parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.”
Our national parks stand as a testament to America's commitment to preserving the natural splendor and cultural heritage that define our nation.
The rangers and staff who steward these lands are the backbone of the park experience. Their knowledge, passion, and commitment ensure that visitors can safely and meaningfully engage with these natural wonders. The recent layoffs have led to concerns about maintenance,
operating hours, and public safety within the parks. Reduced staffing means fewer educational programs, delayed maintenance, and diminished visitor services, all of which undermine the foundational purpose of the NPS.
In response to these alarming developments, a national day of action on March 1 saw protests at hundreds of national park sites. At Yosemite National Park, demonstrators expressed their dismay over the staff reductions, emphasizing the critical role rangers play in preserving the park's integrity. Similarly, at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio, hundreds braved harsh weather to support NPS and Forest Service employees, highlighting the deep connection communities have with these public lands.
Troy Riling-Anderson is an ecologist whose job offer at North Cascades National Park in Washington State was rescinded before the mass firings in February, two days after President Trump's inauguration. He expressed concern that this is about
a land grab by corporations.
“The public lands are an American value, and they’re trying to get rid of that value by getting rid of the offices and the people,” said Riling-Anderson. “If that value doesn’t exist, there’s not really any way to stop them from selling off land.”
The Sierra Club and other groups are suing DOGE over these illegal mass firings, in an effort to protect not only our treasured public lands and the stewards of those lands, but Americans’ access to the great outdoors.
Let us remember that the preservation of our natural and cultural heritage is not a partisan issue but a patriotic one. It is our collective responsibility to ensure our national parks and forests endure for generations to come.

Tucked into the fast-growing corner of northwest Fort Bend County, Fulshear is not just on the map—it’s making history. And in the city’s at-large Position 1 City Council race, one standout candidate is making moves with heart, hustle, and hope: Brown Otu.
From Africa to America to Fulshear, Otu’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. He’s not just running for office—he’s running toward a vision. One of unity. One of opportunity. And one of thoughtful growth.
“Fulshear is a beacon. Its where open prairies meet open minds. Where public safety and private enterprise grow side-by-side. And where every new neighbor feels like family,” says Otu, his signature smile shining as brightly as his campaign promise.
And the city agrees. Fulshear has surged from just 16,856 residents in the 2020 Census to an estimated 47,000 today— making it the second fastest-growing city in the U.S. What’s drawing them in? A mix of Texas charm, community-first leadership, and bold, forward-thinking citizens like Otu.

As a seasoned project manager

and local business owner, Otu knows how to turn vision into reality. He’s pledged to work closely with Mayor Don McCoy and the current council to maintain low taxes, eliminate unnecessary fees, and build the infrastructure that booming cities desperately need—all while keeping Fulshear’s charm intact.
“We’re growing fast—but we’re growing smart,” Otu says. “We’ll keep rules and red tape in check, while expanding access to parks, schools, and roads that make life better for families—because that’s what leadership should look like.”
 A Family Committed to Commu-
nity
Brown isn’t doing this alone. His wife, Theresa, and sons Robert and Daniel are not only his biggest supporters—they’re active community builders in their own right. Whether it’s through the Fulshear-Katy Chamber of Commerce, their family church, or youth sports leagues, the Otus are a testament to what happens when faith and civic pride come together.
 Championing Diversity, Unity, and Opportunity
Otu proudly celebrates Fulshear’s evolving identity, including its
growing African American population. He’s running not just to represent—but to reflect—a community that values diversity, inclusion, and the American Dream.
“Church-going families, small business owners, young professionals, seniors—they’re all vital threads in Fulshear’s fabric,” Otu says. “I’m here to be their voice, their advocate, and their partner in progress.”
 VOTE: Early and Easy
Early Voting kicks off Tuesday, April 22 through Tuesday, April 29, with Election Day set for Saturday, May 3. You can cast your vote at:

“I love our neighbors—every street, every block, every neighborhood,” Otu says. “This campaign is about listening. Learning. And earning every vote.”
And with that kind of heart, vision, and leadership, it’s no surprise Brown Otu is quickly becoming a name synonymous with Fulshear’s bright and boundless future.

In a nation where political courage can sometimes feel like a rare gem, two bold Texas Democrats are refusing to stay silent.
U.S. Representatives Greg Casar (D-Austin) and Jasmine Crockett (D-Dallas) have stepped up to the national stage, not just to resist former President Donald Trump’s influence—but to ignite a new fire in the Democratic Party. Their shared mission? To champion working families, hold billionaires accountable, and remind America that Texas Democrats still know how to shake things up.
And make no mistake—this isn’t politics as usual. It’s political passion in full blaze, Texas-style.
Taking On Titans: The Tesla Tussle
At the center of this storm is none other than Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose entanglements with Trump and cozy proximity to federal contracts have raised eyebrows and ire. While Musk’s empire has made a Texas-sized mark on the Lone Star State, his political ties and perceived role in advancing Trump’s interests have drawn fierce opposition.
Rep. Greg Casar, already making waves as a progressive powerhouse, lit up a crowd in Tucson with a fiery 12-minute speech that didn't mince words. Backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Casar slammed Musk and

the "oligarchy" surrounding Trump, declaring it’s high time to “Fire Elon Musk.”
But Casar didn’t stop there.
“Our job is not just to beat the fraudster Republicans at the polls,” he told the crowd. “Our job is also to make sure the Democratic Party stops thinking small, does big things for working people. Always, no matter what.”
Now that is Texas-sized vision. Crockett’s Birthday Wish? Hold Elon Accountable
Meanwhile, in a show of political poise and unapologetic grit, Rep. Jasmine Crockett joined a virtual rally calling out Musk’s influence and urging protests at Tesla dealerships on March 29—her birthday.
“All I want to see happen on my birthday is for Elon to be taken down,” Crockett said with a smirk, making it crystal
clear that her call was for nonviolent protest and accountability—not chaos.
Predictably, her words were twisted. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, speaking on Fox News, tried to paint Crockett’s remarks as threatening—an all-too-familiar tactic used to silence bold women of color in politics. But Crockett didn’t flinch.
“She’s attempting to get me to say ‘Oh, I’m going to be scared and just not going to say anything,’” Crockett said in response. “That’s not happening.” Message received.
A New Texas Blueprint for National Change Casar, 35, and Crockett, 43, are both in their second term in Congress— and they're rewriting what it means to be a Texas Democrat. They're fierce. They’re
unfiltered. And they’re unafraid to go toeto-toe with billionaires and bullies alike.
More importantly, they represent a generational shift in the Democratic Party—a willingness to challenge complacency within their own ranks while fighting tooth and nail for working people, equity, and justice.
Their fight isn’t just about Trump or Musk. It’s about reminding Americans that Texas isn’t a monolith—and that bold, progressive leadership from the South can help steer the nation forward.
At a glance:
• Casar calls out the "oligarchy" benefiting from Trump-era contracts and demands Democrats dream bigger.
• Crockett stands her ground after facing backlash for challenging Elon Musk’s influence.
• Both reps are boldly carving out space for progressive Southern leadership.
Houston Style Magazine proudly supports voices that rise above the noise— leaders who speak for the voiceless, stand firm in their truth, and remind us that the future of America runs straight through the heart of Texas.
When the voices of the people are ignored, true leaders grab a mic—and an open chair.
On Thursday, March 27, two Democratic powerhouses—Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and former Texas Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke—are teaming up to host a dynamic Congressional Town Hall in none other than battleground Fort Bend County. The event, held at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg, TX, kicks off at 6:00 p.m. CT and promises to be more than just a listening session—it's a launchpad for action, advocacy, and accountability.
Organized by the voter-empowering force Powered by People, this event will give everyday Texans the chance to ask bold questions, voice real concerns, and connect over a shared desire to push America forward.
Why Fort Bend Matters
Fort Bend County is one of the most diverse and fastest-growing counties in Texas—and it’s in play. Democrats see the region as key to shaping the future of statewide and national politics. With demographics that mirror the nation’s future, the fight for representation in Fort Bend is a fight for the soul of American democracy.
And while Beto and Walz are
By Francis Page Jr. For www.StyleMagazine.com
stepping up, Republican Congressman Troy Nehls (TX-22) is… well, stepping aside. Nehls has openly refused to host a town hall, famously saying, “I don’t know why you’d want to hold a town hall right now.” That sentiment is a sharp contrast to the Democratic approach: transparency, inclusion, and fearless dialogue.
While Nehls and his GOP colleagues retreat from constituents, Beto and Walz are going grassroots—state to state, city to city, voter to voter.
People Power in Action
Powered by People, the event’s sponsor, isn’t just a name—it’s a mission.
Launched by Beto O’Rourke in 2019, the group has been a juggernaut in Texas voter registration, running the largest progressive voter mobilization drive in state history. From the Rio Grande Valley to East Texas and beyond, Powered by People has helped register hundreds of thousands of Texans—proving that civic engagement isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a movement.
From the Midwest to the Lone Star State
This isn’t Governor Walz’s first rodeo. He’s been hosting town halls across America—in places like Nebraska, Wisconsin, and his home state of Minnesota— engaging voters and offering a model for compassionate, common-sense governance. Teaming up with Beto in Texas is more than symbolic—it’s strategic. It's about reminding Texans that showing up still matters.
Join the Conversation, Join the Movement
If you're in the Fort Bend area—or just hungry for change—you’re invited to join the crowd and be heard. This isn’t a rally. It’s not a speech. It’s a conversation about our shared future.

2025 Womens’s HERstory Awards Honorees
In a world fueled by viral moments and hustle culture, it’s easy to forget that life can pivot in seconds — especially when it comes to medical emergencies like seizures. March 26, 2025, marks National Epilepsy Awareness Day, and its high time we moved beyond the myths and misunderstandings and into meaningful action. Seizures don’t discriminate — they can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. And yet, many still don’t know what to do when they see someone in crisis.
For far too long, the Black community has faced systemic challenges in healthcare access, especially when it comes to neurological disorders like epilepsy. Lack of proper information, delayed responses, and outdated myths have contributed to avoidable tragedies. One such tragedy? The heartbreaking story of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old college student whose life was cut short during a fraternity hazing incident — not because of the seizure itself, but because of the failure to act.
Instead of seeking help, those around Caleb froze, panicked, or simply didn’t know what to do. Caleb didn’t need heroes — he needed knowledge, action, and compassion. Let’s make sure we never stand in the way of help again.

zure, what you do — or don’t do — can be the difference between life and death. Here’s a breakdown that could save a life:
✅ DO Stay Calm: Panic helps no one. Take a breath and focus on helping the person.
✅ DO Clear the Area: Remove sharp or dangerous objects nearby.
✅ DO Roll Them on Their Side: This helps keep their airway clear.
✅ DO Time the Seizure: If it lasts more than five minutes, it’s time to call 911.
❌ DON’T Hold Them Down: This can cause injuries.
❌ DON’T Put Anything in Their Mouth: That old myth about swallowing your tongue? Totally false. You might cause choking instead.
❌ DON’T Leave Them Alone: Stay with them until they’re fully conscious.
✔ Calling 911 is essential if:
The seizure lasts more than five minutes
Another seizure follows immediately The person doesn’t wake up The person is injured, pregnant, or has a known medical condition
Why Awareness Matters More Than Ever
Over 3.4 million Americans — including 470,000 children — live with epilepsy. Yet, awareness lags behind. In underserved communities, where emergency services may already be stretched thin, it becomes doubly important that bystanders know how to respond. What happened to Caleb wasn’t just a medical emergency — it was a wakeup call. Had those around him recognized the signs, cleared the space, and called for help, the outcome could’ve been very different. Time is brain, and in seizure cases, every moment counts. Post-seizure com-
plications can increase the chances of additional seizures, brain injury, or worse — but with proper care, many people recover safely.
Turning Tragedy Into Change
We can’t bring Caleb back — but we can honor his life by ensuring no one else is failed by silence, fear, or misinformation. Let’s use his story to fuel a movement of awareness, advocacy, and action.
Whether you're a parent, teacher, student, coach, or community leader — it’s on all of us to educate ourselves. Host a workshop. Share information. Follow epilepsy organizations on social media. Ask your child’s school if their staff knows what to do. These aren’t dramatic gestures — they’re lifesaving ones.
Class Is in Session — Join the Movement
National Epilepsy Awareness Day isn’t just another color-coded cause — it’s a mission. Let’s make sure the Houston community leads the charge in turning knowledge into power. Because when it comes to seizures, we don’t have time to waste.
So, Houston Style Magazine readers — let’s be bold, be informed, and most importantly, be ready. Caleb Wilson’s life reminds us that help delayed is help denied. Let’s make sure we’re never the

MH-E-B Expands to Montgomery: A Game-Changer for the Growing Community
ontgomery, Texas, is on the brink of a major transformation, and leading the charge is none other than H-E-B, Texas’ beloved grocery powerhouse. With groundbreaking slated for August 2025, the highly anticipated 127,186-square-foot store is expected to redefine grocery shopping in the city while fueling economic growth in one of the fastest-expanding regions near Lake Conroe.
A Bold Investment in Montgomery’s Future
The estimated $30 million project, located at the southeastern corner of State Highway 105 and FM 2854, is more than just another grocery store—it’s a catalyst for growth. H-E-B LP, which has owned the 16.75-acre site since 2014, has carefully planned this development to meet the rising demand of Montgomery’s growing population.
As Montgomery Mayor Sara Countryman explains, the project required extensive planning, including a feasibility study to ensure the infrastructure, such as water and sewer lines, could support such an ambitious expansion. Initially appraised at $4.38 million, the property’s value is projected to soar to $12 million once H-E-B opens its doors.
Additionally, the development is expected to generate $11,000 per year in
By Francis Page Jr. For www.StyleMagazine.com
debt service revenue and over $34,500 annually in operations and maintenance revenue, reinforcing the city’s economic foundation.
H-E-B vs. the Competition: A New Grocery Battle Begins
While Montgomery residents eagerly anticipate their new shopping destination, local competitors are preparing for a shift in the grocery landscape. The new H-E-B site sits catty-corner to a Kroger, one of its fiercest rivals in the Houston metro area. The grocery battle intensifies with Brookshire Brothers just down the road, and some fear the impact on smaller, locally owned businesses.
“When Home Depot arrived last October, it had a significant impact on
long-standing local businesses like Jim’s Hardware, Ace Hardware, and McCoy’s Building Supply,” Mayor Countryman noted. “We anticipate a similar effect when H-E-B arrives, especially on Kroger and Brookshire Brothers.”
Montgomery: A City on the Rise
Beyond groceries, Montgomery is undergoing a broader transformation. With a population of just over 3,000 residents, the city is strategically managing its growth to ensure sustainable development. Unlike neighboring Magnolia and Conroe, which have implemented development moratoriums due to water shortages, Montgomery has proactively expanded its water infrastructure to support new businesses and residents.
Additionally, H-E-B has already sold an adjacent 12.7 acres to SR 105 LLC, a subsidiary of Houston-based Williamsburg Enterprises, which plans to develop a future retail center next to the store—further positioning Montgomery as a retail hub for the region.
H-E-B’s Unstoppable Growth in Texas
H-E-B’s Montgomery expansion is part of its rapid growth strategy across the Houston area. Recent milestones include:
• Bridgeland (Cypress, TX): Opened a
128,000-square-foot store in October 2024 as part of a 23-acre urban core development.
• Lago Mar (Texas City, TX): Acquired 15 acres in December 2024 for a future store near the Lagoon attraction.
• Waller County Distribution Campus: Purchased 500 acres to develop a massive distribution hub that will enhance supply chain efficiency across Texas.
With sales exceeding $46 billion, H-E-B continues to dominate the grocery landscape, operating over 435 stores in Texas and Mexico. The Montgomery store is poised to become another jewel in the company’s ever-expanding empire.
What’s Next for Montgomery and H-E-B?
As Montgomery prepares for this landmark addition, local businesses and residents are bracing for the impact. Some see H-E-B as a beacon of progress, bringing job opportunities, increased property values, and a modern shopping experience, while others worry about its effect on existing stores. Regardless, one thing is certain: Montgomery is growing, and H-E-B is leading the way. of it all.

Set to take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m., the online gathering offers families the opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate bilingualism. Those who pre-register will have the chance to win exciting prizes, including laptops, iPads, and books! Only the first 500 registrants will be entered into the raffle, and they must attend the live broadcast to be eligible. This year’s festival features two distinguished guest speakers. Andrés Ruzo, a geothermal scientist, author, and explorer, is best known
for his research on Peru’s “Boiling River of the Amazon.” His work bridges science and traditional knowledge to promote environmental conservation. Joining him is Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, a music professor and bilingual education expert, whose contributions to early childhood music learning have been recognized across the U.S. and internationally.

Houston streets are about to get a golden glow — and it’s not just from chrome bumpers and glitter paint. The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art has proudly crowned its 2025 Art Car Parade Grand Marshal, and it’s none other than the “Athlete of the Century” himself — nine-time Olympic gold medalist and University of Houston icon, Carl Lewis.
Slated for Saturday, April 12, 2025, the world’s largest and most whimsical mobile art parade will be led by a hometown hero whose speed once stunned the globe — and whose enduring connection to Houston continues to inspire generations.
“I’m so excited to be named Grand Marshal for the 2025 Art Car Parade,” Lewis beamed. “As a car enthusiast, I’ve always admired the creativity and artistry that goes into these incredible vehicles. The Art Car Parade is the soul of Houston’s culture — bold, creative, and completely unafraid to shine. I can’t wait to lead this iconic celebration of both art and car culture.”
With a track record that includes 10 Olympic medals (nine gold!) over five Games and a permanent place in Houston’s heart, Lewis is no stranger to excellence. Currently in his 11th season at the University of Houston — and his third as Head Coach of Track and Field — Lewis continues to build champions, on and off the track.
“Having Carl Lewis as our Grand Marshal is a dream come true,” said Jack
OLYMPIC LEGEND TO LEAD 2025 ART CAR PARADE

Massing, Executive Director of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. “He’s a world-class athlete, a community leader, and a symbol of the bold creativity this parade represents. Carl brings star power and Houston pride to an event that already dazzles with imagination.”
A Parade Like No Other — Houston Style
This year marks the 38th Annual Houston Art Car Parade, presented by Team Gillman, and if you’ve never witnessed it — buckle up. Over 250 rolling masterpieces, transformed by artists, students, families, and dreamers from across the country, will take over Allen Parkway in a burst of kinetic color and creativity. Last year’s crowd topped 400,000, and 2025 promises even
more surprises.
Lewis joins a parade legacy that includes Houston icons such as Bun B, Marilyn Oshman, JJ Watt, Dan Aykroyd, and George Clinton. But this year, the fusion of speed and spectacle feels especially symbolic. After all, who better than a track star to lead a cavalcade of fast-moving works of art?
Festivities begin Thursday, April 10, with a Sneak Peek at Discovery Green. On Friday, April 11, get ready to dance the night away at the Legendary Art Car Ball — part performance, part party, all unforgettable. The main event, the 38th Annual Art Car Parade, cruises out Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m.

More Than a Parade — A Movement
Celebrating 38 years of the “drive to create,” The Orange Show’s Art Car Parade isn’t just a beloved Houston tradition — it’s a global phenomenon. What began in the 1980s as a gathering of a few imaginative souls has morphed into the largest free public art event in Houston and the largest celebration of its kind in the world.
The event is powered by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to celebrating the artist in everyone. Their family of creative landmarks includes The Orange Show Monument, the iconic Beer Can House, Smither Park, and the wildly fun Houston Art Bike Parade & Festival.
The 2025 Art Car Parade is made possible with support from the City of Houston, Houston Arts Alliance, ABC-13, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Houston Downtown+, Discovery Green, and of course, Houston’s endlessly creative community.
So, Houston Style Magazine readers, mark your calendars, shine those fenders, and prepare to be inspired. With Carl Lewis steering the celebration, Houston’s 2025 Art Car Parade is already shaping up to be a gold-medal event.
