The HCHSA in partnership with the Houston U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Association celebrated and hosted its annual 2023 Olympic & Paralympic Day on Friday, June 23, focusing on learning about sportsmanship, perseverance, and respect. The attendees got to hear the Olympians’ & Paralympians’ stories and how they found their road to success through sports.
This event took place at Jim & Barbara Morefield Boys & Girls Club with over 30 Houston Olympians and Paralympians from the Houston U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Association, and over 100 youth attendees, ages ranging from 5-17. The venue had 8 sports stations where Olympians & Paralympians educated participants on tennis, baseball, track and field, taekwondo, boxing, gymnastics, bobsled, and basketball. The event concluded with a group photo and souvenirs for every kid in attendance.
This event is designed to engage the youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic and Paralympic movement along with the joy of sports by millions. It celebrates fitness, culture exchange, and educational opportunities, while also promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect, and the Paralympic values of determination, inspiration, courage, and equality.
A special thank you to the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation and Kroger for helping make the day possible!

The 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup was brought to Houston with six exciting matches on three separate dates: June 25, July 1, and July 4. The 2023 Gold Cup Group Stage matches began when NRG Stadium hosted the first doubleheader on June 25, beginning with the face off of Haiti vs. Qatar. This was only Qatar’s second appearance in the Gold Cup, following their appearance in 2021, which also featured a match in Houston. The second match of the day was Mexico vs. Honduras. This match was the Mexican National Team’s 20th appearance at NRG Stadium, making it the most appearances at any venue in the United States! The winners of the first two matches were Mexico and Haiti!
Shell Energy Stadium hosted the last two doubleheaders on July 1 and July 4. The matchups, Cuba vs. Guadeloupe and Guatemala vs. Canada, took place on July 1.
Guadeloupe was the winner of the first match while the result of Guatemala vs. Canada ended with a goalless draw. On July 4, the last doubleheader took place with Canada vs. Cuba playing first, followed by Panama vs. El Salvador. Canada took the win against Cuba while Panama vs. El Salvador ended with a 2-2 tie! It was quite an exciting few days of competition.
