Black Dog Institute is a research led, solution and program driven organisation committed to the understanding, prevention and treatment of mental illness and the reduction of suicide rates in our community.

Driven by science, compassion and action, we transform our research and knowledge into easily accessible, practical programs and services across the broader community.

When referring to our company purpose e.g. in headlines, sub-heads or in body copy, use the language and syntax; “Science. Compassion. Action.”

When using the phrase in a sentence to describe what we do and how we do it - we use sentence case and the following syntax; “We’re about science, compassion and action.” Do not use ampersand symbols (&) in the phrase.

01.1 Principles

Black Dog Institute Brand Guidelines

Our tone of voice principles Black Dog Institute is the voice of mental health. Built on science, evidence, trust and compassion, we are taking mental health science into a bright, new era.

It’s important to make sure people know who we are and what we stand for.

One of the ways we can do this is through the way we write and talk – our tone of voice (TOV). More than simply relaying our messages, our communications should be used to bring our personality to life and connect with our audiences.

From advertising campaigns to presentations, pitches and reports, if the tone is consistent, we’ll reinforce the integrity of our purpose and unique place in the market.

A note on our name: When referring to our organisation, always use our name in full in the first instance, e.g. Black Dog Institute. For the sake of brevity, if you will be repeating our name throughout a document/piece of written communication, and wish to use an acronym, you must introduce the full name first followed by, (BDI). You may then use the acronym throughout said document.

Example: “Black Dog Institute (BDI) is a proudly independent not-for-profit medical research institute affiliated with the UNSW Sydney. The BDI team is dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating the significant mental health challenges that we face nationally and globally.”

That doesn’t mean we boast but rather that we know that better mental health is possible for everyone. We aim to make sure of it.

We believe science and compassion can heal the world. Having learned more about the human mind in the last 30 years than in any other period of human history – mental health is on a promising path with a stronger, brighter outlook than ever before.

We’re an organisation born from personal, lived experience – a genuine, heartfelt community who get it because we’ve been there ourselves. We know the meaning of perseverance and the true power of having people you can rely on to see you through.

Reconnection AFTer Discharge Get access to discreet support Research shows that text messages with support, tools, an information sent to people after a visit to hospital for self-harm or suicidal crisis may make a positive difference.

At Black Dog Institute we are researching, trialling and continuing to develop our text message service called RAFT. This text message service is available to you for support that includes: Helping you reconnect with the right services and apps Tools supporting emotional regulation, safety planning, coping with suicidal thoughts, improving interpersonal relationships, and managing alcohol.

It’s our mission to empower everyone in Australia to look after their mental health.

Our aim is to reduce the severity and incidence of mental illness, actively reduce suicide rates, innovate new models of care and create easily accessible solutions to empower everyone to look after their mental health.

We are so proud of how far Australia has come in the detection and treatment of mental illness, yet there is still so much work to be done. We are doing everything we can to keep us moving towards a better future.

How? By reducing the severity and incidence of mental illness, lowering suicide rates, being innovative in our approach to new models of care - and making sure help is easy to access.

Australia has come a long way in improving the approach to mental illness.

But we know there’s more to be done. That’s why we’re always moving towards a better future.

03.1 Overview

Overview The Black Dog Institute logo must be applied correctly and consistently.

Each logo is set within specific proportions and relationships that must not be altered.

Primary logo

Primary logo The primary logo should be used for all internal and external communications.

This should be the main logo we use when the background is light enough for the logo to be legible.

Reverse logo This logo can be used in instances when the background colour is too dark for the colour logo to be legible.

Primary reverse logo

Restricted use mono logo

However, this is NOT the preferred route and should only be used when the background colour can’t be changed to enable us to incorporate a full colour logo.

Mono logo This logo should only be used when colour is unavailable for example black and white only printing.

Restricted use stacked logo The restricted use stacked logo is only used for extreme small scale formats where spacing restricts the use of the horizontal logo.

03.2 Clear space and minimum size

Clear space & minimum size Clear space A minimum clear space surrounding the logo has been defined to ensure that it remains uncluttered by additional elements. The clear space is the width of the hand symbol from the logo. Clear space is calculated from the outer edge of the logo on all sides.

This rule of clearance space applies on printed applications as well as online.

Minimum size Minimum sizes for the BDI logo have been determined to maintain legibility. The minimum size is defined by the width of the Wordmark.

Please note that the minimum sizes specified here are for a best case scenario. In practice, legibility may vary depending on the application, stock and reproduction method.

Brand architecture Guiding principles Key principle: We want our brand equity to reside in BDI brand, so we don’t create sub brands or visual representations of program names This means that most activities are represented consistently by using the BDI brand

Supporting principles: Approach all brand architecture decisions from an ‘outside-in’ perspective

We need to make our decisions with an external lens • Will it make sense to researchers, partners, participants, the public?

Colour palette These are the colours that make up our brand. When using the colours, colour values should be kept as is and should not be altered. The correct values should be used for the corresponding application.

For digital applications such as web, mobile and PowerPoint, RGB colour values should be used.

Primary colours The colours in our primary colour palette should be used as the dominant colours for all external communications.

For print applications use the Pantone spot colour values or the CMYK values depending on your printing method.

Background colours Only use warm grey, light blue and white as background colours. Do not use the other colours in our colour palette.

Internal Communications To clearly distinguish internal communications from external communications, Light Pink and Pink MUST be used as primary colours in all internal communications.

Primary typeface DM Sans is our typeface and it is used for all applications. It is a humanistic sans serif font that is friendly and geometric. We use it in a variety of weights in order to allow for full creative expression.

Typography is an important aspect of our brand identity. The typography usage below should be followed to ensure all of our communications appear consistent.

DM Sans Regular should also be used for all standard body-copy.

DM Sans Medium can be used for headlines and titles.

DM Sans Bold can be used for headlines and titles or creating emphasis within body copy.

All headlines should be set in ‘sentence case’.

These icons show our distinct iconography style which has rounded corners and rounded stroke ends to express empathy and warmth.

The icons provided here are a standard suite that should be used where applicable and used as a style guide for the creation of other required icons.

As an example, icons can be used to demonstrate key themes in a PowerPoint, Flyer or Poster – they can also be used on our website to help summarise key themes or topics.

Feasibility

Involving people with lived experience of suicidal thoughts in the design of health care services and interventions is important but challenging due to concerns about ensuring their safety as well as structural barriers to attending interviews or focus groups.

Conventional face-to-face focus groups are limited by the number of the topics that can be included in a given time, and the geographical location. Lack of freedom of choosing the participatory locations can be a barrier, particularly for people with lived experience of suicidal thoughts, who to the chance of their coming from the same community.

Online focus groups delivered through web conferencing technology (W-OFG) can operate like conventional face-toface focus groups, by providing real-time communication for multiple users from different geographical locations.

Online focus group methods also have greater potential for participants to maintain anonymity and provide more ‘equal’ chances of participation where limited information of personal details (e.g., social status) are available.[1]

Photography style This is our photography style, it must always reflect hope and positivity, therefore we do not use images with sad or even hidden faces that could suggest suffering and hard times. Our work drives better support, treatment and outcomes for people with mental health issues and our photography reflects that.

Community

Abstract metaphors

The portrait style captures people in their working environment in a portrait format always facing directly to camera, reflecting our honesty and integrity. Their expression is warm, empathetic and positive.

The community category captures people in the community in a more lifestyle photography style. Showing people interacting with each other in a positive and warm expression.

The abstract metaphors are for representing mental wellbeing as well as complicated mental thoughts and feelings. Metaphor imagery can be used effectively when we need to refer to a mental disorder (depression, anxiety, bi-polar) and need positive representation).

Photography must represent diversity including: gender diversity, sexual diversity, people with disabilities, social diversity and religious diversity.

Our photography style can be separated into three categories; portrait, community and abstract metaphor.

Our digital footprint

Note for existing apps in use/development: There are simple ways or “quick wins” to overlay brand elements that make sense in driving a truly consistent brand experience in our current apps.

All new products and services must follow these guidelines For existing products and services there are criteria and product lifecycle conditions that apply to the levels of update required – please visit the brand page on the intranet or contact the Marcomms team for more information.

Of key importance to us is our digital footprint and experience. Given our focus on developing apps and digital programs and services to help support and benefit the mental wellbeing of the community, as well as capture relevant data and insights for our research programs, our identity forms and integral part in building our reputation. As such, we must ensure consistency and brand recognition is prevalent in every digital communication that we create.

Taking the most foundational components of our new identity (font, colour, icon style, logos), we can quickly and easily enhance our product design and user experience.

Through overtly using our brand visuals, we’re able to leverage the credibility of the Black Dog Institute for our products, whilst building equity in our Masterbrand.

As an important part of the audit process and app icon design development - we have identified the need for more consistency across our app icon designs.

Our app icons represent an opportunity to increase brand awareness and reinforce our BDI brand. Through ensuring we use a consistent background featuring our brand colour in conjunction with a set icon style, we’re able to increase brand consistency and return equity into our masterbrand.

To the right, is the visual style for App Icons that have been designed to suit in a set. All new App Icons to be reviewed by the Marcomms Team.
