If the homework is done and kids have overdosed on video games and television is restricted, parents may hear, “Mom, I’m bored,” or “Dad, let’s do something!” As we move from summer to fall, the weather changes and weekend afternoon boredom may set in. Children can create their own imaginative ideas for rainy day fun, but parents can help too and re-enforce learning on the weekend.
John Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal System for libraries suggested, “we learn by doing.” Teachers may see project based learning as a formal method of inquiry. Montessori teachers have touted the value of “discovery learning” which is child-centered. Parents may use some of these ideas for informal project based learning and simply facilitate learning and problem solving around real world examples for fun!
Here are a few ideas that incorporate the ideas of project based learning in a relaxed, natural way.
1. Kids meal night!
Children usually eat what they have a hand in cooking. Kids meal night means the children in the family are responsible for planning and cooking the meal(s). Parents can be responsible for clean-up. Kids can make the grocery list and do the shopping for the meal themselves. The shopping may also involve some budgeting which is a terrific applied math lesson. Measuring may be involved with the cooking, requiring another applied math lesson.
2. For older kids - Scrapbook
Organize old family photos into albums or start a scrapbook of a beloved family vacation. Talking about the memories can help kids re-live the experience and draw you closer. Telling stories can also help children with higher order thinking skills by re-telling the vacation story which has a beginning, middle and end.
3. For younger children – Rainy Day Box keep a rainy day fun box and pull it out on rainy days. Fill it with new markers, glitter-glue, old magazine pictures, scissors and cardstock, then let the kids loose to create a work of art. Encourage children to tell stories about their art or present it to the rest of the family.
Children can “re-decorate” their rooms with a new homemade poster. The poster can highlight their hobbies and interests. All it takes is a trip to the store for poster board, markers, paints and more. You may encourage them to cut out pictures of their favorite topic from old magazines and newspapers to make a theme collage.
Children can also find fun with meaning by volunteering. Service learning can build character in children. Volunteering as a family can create lasting memories. Teaching service is most effective when children give something meaningful to them. An example of an age appropriate, meaningful service project for first and second graders is a teddy bear drive for abused children of domestic violence in shelters or hospitals. Children can be encouraged to give a stuffed animal of their own that is in good shape or earn the money by doing household chores to make a purchase themselves. Children can also travel to the shelter to drop off the stuffed animals so that the “giving” is concrete. Some service ideas are the following.
5. Collect new or like new books for the children’s wing of the hospital. To make the service personally impactful, children can deliver the books to the hospital auxiliary to distribute. Start at home on the rainy day. Help kids make a simple online flyer and ask them to email it to their friends.
6. Organize a neighborhood garage sale to buy extra school supplies for children who cannot afford them. Use the rainy day to organize their own garage sale items and make the posters and flyers so advertise the garage sale.
7. Volunteer to bathe or walk dogs at the local humane society shelter. Some shelters require kids to take an orientation or train before handling dogs.
8. Older children can write letters thanking soldiers for their service. Local church groups or county veteran groups may have access to service personnel with a local connection. Use the day to write and research.
These lists are meant to serve as suggestions only. You and your children will have many more ideas for creative project based learning or service learning. There is literally no end to the fun and meaning you and your children can have while keeping young minds engaged on your next rainy day.

19.Washdishesinasinkfullofwater.Instead of washing dishes with the tap on, fill one side of the sink with soapy water to clean dishes, and only run the dishwasher when it's full to save energy
20.Getawaterfilterandreusablewaterbottle. Over 80 percent of plastic water bottles are tossed -not recycled -- yielding 1.5 tons of waste per year, according to Mother Nature Network Invest in a reusable water bottle (or two) and a filter, if your tap water is lacking

22.Useaneco-friendlyshowerhead.
Basic showerheads disperse quite a bit of water per use, so investing in an eco-friendly one like the Oxygenics Power Massage Handheld Shower Head can save up to 70 percent in water and energy consumption.

“Smart money management is about making the right choices to reach long term goals.
You can teach your kids the basics they will need for life.”
Most parents are determined to provide a higher standard of living for their children than they experienced as children What’s more, we live in an age of instant gratification That’s why it is critical to extend our money management values and to teach financial literacy basics to our children. Yet parents need to do more than talk If parents don’t set good examples in managing their own money, it will be a challenge for kids to take this advice seriously.
My son Blake is now 26, and he and his wife enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and have excellent credit. I’d like to think that our son’s upbringing helped contribute to his good financial habits as an adult When he was a boy, my wife and I spent time talking with our son about smart money management
We also opened both checking and savings accounts for him when he was a teenager This taught him how to balance the money he received from gifts and his allowance. I can still remember how proud he was to have his own account
It’s never too early or too late to learn smart money management skills Parents can begin teaching financial principles the moment their child gets a piggy bank
Talking about money management can be as simple as explaining the difference between money that is earned and money that is received as a gift Discussions should get more in-depth as the child matures
Here are some ideas to get things started in your household:
TheFamilyBudget: A good way to engage older kids is to use play money to explain how mom and dad earn ‘X’ amount, the family’s monthly bills total ‘X’ amount, the family saves ‘X’ amount and so on. For a more realistic approach, you may want to use actual billing statements.
Allowance: I’ve always felt that if you give your children an allowance they should earn the money by doing household chores I also support providing a financial incentive for earning good grades. In both instances, earning money is stressed and children learn how rewarding it is to be paid for working
Cashvs.Credit: Credit cards are a great way to establish a credit history needed to make big purchases such as a vehicle or a home yet parents must stress that money borrowed on a credit card must be paid back, and often it’s paid back with interest When my son was younger, I told him that credit is a privilege, not a birthright, and your good credit may be taken away from you if it is abused
It’s important to have a discussion with kids about credit cards and credit history before they enter college or the workforce Then, they will have the knowledge they need to make responsible decisions that will benefit them for years to come
I highly recommend Wells Fargo’s Hands on Banking® program, available online at handsonbanking.com.
This is a great learning tool that provides ageappropriate money management lesson plans for everyone from 4th graders to adults The lessons are narrated, animated, colorful and fun There’s also a Spanish-language version El futuro en tus manos®.
Tell your working teenagers to put aside “spending money” and set up a systematic way to save I recommend that employed teenagers begin to save about 10-20 percent of their earnings I also encourage teens to keep their spending money and savings in separate accounts
UsetheTech:It is so convenient these days to deposit money into your child’s account from your mobile phone so they can go to the movies or to enjoy a pizza with their friends while you’re at work or away from home.
Make it a priority to not only teach your kids about finance, but take a refresher course yourself. Stay on top of your family’s future by remembering you can always learn something new!

BY LAURA LANE
I remember the first time a butterfly landed on my daughter’s hand She was three years old, and she stood very still and gazed at the beautiful creature With their multitude of colors and feather light touch, butterflies are magical Why not create a home for them in your garden this spring?
Creating a butterfly garden provides a wonderful opportunity for your children to be outside breathing in fresh air, soaking up sunshine, and digging in the dirt Gardening engages children’s five senses, encourages their natural curiosity about how things grow, and gives them a sense of accomplishment when they finish a project As you plant your garden, you can talk with your child about a butterfly’s life cycle and habitat. You also get the added bonus of creating a beautiful sanctuary in your own backyard
Nowistheperfecttimetogetstarted.Here’showtobuildyourbutterflygarden:
ChooseaSunny,ShelteredSpot
Butterflies and their food plants require a lot of sun, according to horticulturist Corinne Hannah “Since butterflies cannot regulate their internal temperature and need sunlight to warm their bodies and enable them to fly, it is important that your garden has a good amount of sun,” she says “Many nectar plants require full sun as well for optimum bloom”
In addition to picking a sunny spot, it helps to create a sheltered area, so butterflies don’t have to fight the wind Hannah suggests using plant material or trellises to help reduce wind speed and create a wind barrier.
PrepareYourSoil
If you have poor soil quality, add organic matter to help enrich it You can use your own compost or purchase it in bag or bulk at a garden center Building a raised bed will also give you more control over your soil quality
ProvideRestingSpotsand“Puddling”Places
Place flat, light colored stones in your garden where butterflies can rest their wings and bask in the sun. Also make sure you have some wet, sandy spots where butterflies can drink water and extract minerals from the damp soil “A gardener can plan for puddling sites by creating a sandy beach in a water garden or by adding sand to a bird bath and keeping it moist, or simply allowing for mud puddles in your garden,” Hannah says.
PlantNativeFloweringPlants
Most species of butterflies use nectar as their main source of food, so including flowering plants in your garden is essential It’s important to plant flowers that are native to your region, because the butterflies depend on their native plants for survival and reproduction. You can find a list of butterflies native to your area at Your paragraph text. Once you’ve identified the types of butterflies in your region, go to Your paragraph text to find the best plants for your garden. Also visit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at www.wildflower.org/collections for a list of recommended native plants in your area
PlantforContinuousBloom
Since butterflies need nectar throughout their adult life, choose plants that bloom in early, mid, and late summer
Annual and biennial plants often have a long bloom season and will cover those temporary bloom gaps in your perennial garden, according to Hannah
IncludeHostPlants
Mother butterflies lay eggs on specific plants called host plants When caterpillars hatch out of their eggs they eat the host plants. It’s important to include host plants in your garden, so the butterflies will take up residence there and not just pass through For information on butterflies and their specific host plants, visit thebutterflysitecom/createbutterfly-gardenshtml
AvoidHerbicidesandPesticides
These products contain chemicals that kill butterflies and other beneficial insects in their larval and adult phases. As you plant and tend to your garden, you can talk with your child about how the choices you make affect the butterflies and their habitat
WatchtheButterfliesArrive!
Once your garden is planted, your family can sit back and watch the butterflies sip nectar from your flowers, congregate in puddles, and bask in the sun As you enjoy your garden, you can also feel good knowing that you’ve helped butterflies find a perfect home

Hustle Town, Space City, the energy capital of the world -- you name it, Houston is all cosmopolitan energy and drive.
And in this fourth-largest city in the U.S., it’s sometimes hard to stop and smell the bluebonnets.
But there is plenty of nature to enjoy -- if you know where to look. So, grab your phone, because it's time to visit some of the most Instagrammable nature spots in Houston.
M
emorial Park Eastern Glades
The Most Instagrammable Nature Spots. The Memorial Park running loop is where runners, walkers and the just-want-to-be-seen go to workout, and yes, check-in on social media. The Eastern Glades is the first major project completed in a 10-year plan from the Memorial Park Conservancy.
The Eastern Glades is a renewal of the natural ecosystem in a part of the park that up till now, was inaccessible. Enter the park on the road bordering the Seymour Lieberman Exercise Trail, and circle around to the last portion before exiting the park. There’s plenty of parking and clean restroom access.
Houston Arboretum
The Most Instagrammable Nature Spots. A few minutes down Memorial Parkway, close to the Loop, is one of H-town’s greenest treasures. The Houston Arboretum boasts a short walking trail and an educational center. You can take a break from the urban core, or sign the kids up for summer camps to learn more about Houston's natural ecosystem.
Japanese Garden at Hermann Park
Hermann Park sprawls across the space between the Texas Medical Center and Rice University. There's plenty to post on Instagram here: The Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural History, the McGovern Centennial Garden, where the roses will get plenty of likes.
Tucked away near the Molly Ann Smith Plaza, you’ll find the bamboo and serene water features of the Japanese garden. Looking for ideas for your own yard? The Japanese garden is the perfect place to get some landscaping ideas. Whether you’re looking for a Zen concept or just trying to visualize how a clump of bamboo might look next to your patio, be sure to take lots of pictures.
Buffalo Bayou
Buffalo Bayou is one of Houston’s most important natural resources. The bayou has been revitalized in recent years and is no longer cluttered with trash. Today, it’s a brilliant green space that winds through the city, offering plenty of cortisol-lowering outdoor activities, like hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. Let your friends know you’re a true Houstonian by posting from #buffalobayou!
Terry Hershey Park
Terry Hershey Park offers sprawling acres of green space outside the Loop, near the Energy Corridor. The well-maintained trail is popular with runners, bikers and walkers and it borders the still-untamed bank of the Buffalo Bayou. Need a place to stop and rest and post a picture? There are plenty of benches and stops along the way. This is also the trail where you’ll find a few small hills -- a rarity in the Bayou City, which is as flat as the tortillas served at Ninfa’s.
Houston has no shortage of Instagrammable spots -- the murals, the city lights, downtown, and the Galleria. But thanks to dedicated efforts, there are also more green spaces in Houston -- and more places to show your followers that green is not just the color of money in Houston.
