AUBREY R. TAYLOR: “I would like to thank Councilman Mike Knox, and the Honorable Jacquie Baly for finding value in my request to share their thoughts on “FREEDOM” and what it means to them. G
By Mike Knox Houston City Council - At-Large Position #1
“Give me LIBERTY or Give me Death!” These words are attributed to Patrick Henry from a speech he made to the Second Virginia Convention on March 23, 1775. What was he talking about? Are these words relevant today? The words Freedom and Liberty are often used interchangeably in conversation, and I will use them interchangeably in this article. Realistically they amount to the same thing. Both mean, in the broadest of terms, the absence of hindrance, restraint, confinement, or repression. Both Liberty and Freedom mean you can do whatever you want to do. Did Patrick Henry mean that Americans should be completely without restraint – I don’t think so. Our Founding Fathers were avid readers of philosophy, logic, and apologetics. They studied Socrates, Aristotle, John Locke, and of course, the Bible. Many were in the habit of discussing serious issues like Freedom and Liberty as a source of evening entertainment. They came to understand that Freedom and Liberty meant individuals were free to do as they pleased provided; they did not hinder another person’s Freedom or Liberty. To put it in modern language, “your freedom to swing your arm ends where my nose begins.” These founders of our country recognized that government authority (laws) inevitably leads to the tyranny of the people and places humans in an unnatural state of servitude to the will of the ruling class. They set about inventing a new form of government — not a Democracy, but rather a Republic. Our founders understood that Democracy was flawed because it depended on the rule of the masses or majority rule. They understood the majority would always favor the larger group over the individual. A Republic, on the other hand, is based on the rule of law designed to protect the freedoms of the individual over the will of the majority. Unless, of course, the Republic was taken over by a despot, tyrant, or king. Their solution was brilliant. A democratically elected governing body, which could be managed by the majority, confined by the law enacted by the people through their
COUNCILMAN MIKE KNOX
elected representatives. The purpose of the whole exercise was to free the individual to have the liberty to pursue their definition of happiness through the exercise of individual free will. We have all been engaged in this grand experiment for well over two hundred years, and we have not perfected it yet. Some would argue we have steadily yielded our Liberty to gain safety and security, that we are stifling free speech with political correctness and are losing the ability, as a nation, to disagree without being disagreeable. It seems our schools have stopped teaching the classics in favor of the convenient. Perhaps all this is true. However, I like to think these struggles are not new to the United States and that Liberty and Freedom will ultimately prevail. Freedom and Liberty are, to me, the light at the end of the tunnel. The goal to which we must constantly struggle to achieve. Americans have died in places near and far attempting to obtain this “Holy Grail” we call Freedom. From the first person killed in the Boston Massacre, Crispus Attucks, to the next person who gives their full measure of devotion in service to this nation and all who have sacrificed in past conflicts so we can continue to seek Freedom, Americans would rather have Liberty than life itself. So, it would appear to me, Patrick Henry’s words in 1775 are as true today as they were then. I, for one, agree. Give me Liberty or Give me Death!
M
What Freedom Mean To Me By Jacquie Baly Governmental Affairs and Media Relations Expert
My parents migrated to America many years ago to give their only child a better life and a chance of achieving the American Dream. As a result, freedom embodies having the opportunity to pursue a great education, pursuing a promising career and becoming an accomplished business owner and entrepreneur. I am blessed to achieve these goals and so much more. But Freedom does not stop there. It also encompasses being a dedicated public servant and giving back to our wonderful community that has given so much to me. I am now a proud mother of two very accomplished young men. Freedom now has new meanings as they follow in my footsteps in public service and help make our community even better than it is today. Creating a positive legacy and promoting good will, our freedom as Americans will continue for many generations to come.

Thoughts on the Short Term
We recently published our Recession Dashboard which provides a look at the fundamentals of the economy that ultimately drives the stock market higher or lower. It has become much harder to analyze the fundamental data of the economy without focusing on what the government has done and continues to do in support of the economy. Between the Federal Reserve, fiscal policy, and COVID-related restrictions, a very small part (if any at all) of our lives avoid governmental influence. We believe the short-term forecast for the markets is easier than it has been in the past. Why? Because of the government support in the form of bond buying programs and the many forms of additional government spending will continue to support higher stock/equity values. With that being said, we do not think this precludes us from “normal” stock market pullbacks. The stock market averages a 10% pullback once a year, and a 20% pullback about every 2 to 3 years. Thoughts on the Long Term
As we look out further (5+ years), forecasting becomes harder. Why? The government has grown in size and in power over the past 18 months. For example, the CDC made decisions last year on what businesses were deemed “essential” and more recently imposed a moratorium on evictions (in violation of property-owners rights). Also, after passing $5 trillion in emergency pandemic spending, the government is considering another $4.5 trillion of spending which will only add fuel to the fire as it pertains to the national debt burden. Capitalism vs. Socialism
The history of the world has been a battle between two competing ideologies of how resources should be distributed. Capitalism
in a provide
This ideology distributes resources through free markets and competition, while attempting to put a system in place to limit fraud and greed. In order to succeed capitalist system, you must goods or services for which
someone else is willing to pay. You have to produce a good or service at a cost less than what you charge the consumer to create wealth. While some people in a capitalist system become extremely wealthy, they do it by creating goods or services that people want and in a way that competitors have a difficult time copying. This system is not perfect, but no human-made system will ever be perfect. With that being said, capitalism has allowed America to become the most prosperous country in the world (and arguably in world history).
Socialism
This ideology allows politicians to distribute resources. Important economic decisions are not left to the markets or decided by individuals. This approach is also referred to as central planning. Advocates of socialism argue that the shared ownership of resources allow for a more equal distribution of goods and services and a fairer society. While this may make sense in theory, the drive to work hard and be productive lessens as your additional output does not result in additional compensation/wealth creation. Government taxes individuals who have been able to create income and wealth at an excessive rate and then transfer those resources to their favored causes or group(s), often while shutting down competition. Just to be clear, capitalism does not mean zero government. There are many things that governments can do that benefit all citizens without redistributing wealth or income. Examples include public safety, courts, sanitation, and national defense. This government spending can generate huge benefits and is necessary for a free-market system to function in a sustainable fashion. For example, there are very few publically traded companies in Cuba because the government controls which companies receive market share. Government Debt Affects Economic Growth
The larger that government debt grows as a relative to the private sector, the harder it is to create more wealth in an economy. According to 2011 research from the Bank of International Settlements, when government debt-to-GDP exceeds 85%, it becomes a drag on economic growth. Earlier this year, the U.S. economic debt was at 127% of GDP.
So far, the U.S. private sector has been able to grow, increase profits, and continue to increase wealth. We believe that is because of the power of entrepreneurs and the new technologies they create. However, this may not always be the case.

Communism exalts the totalitarian state and its rulers as the final arbiters of right and wrong. Biblical Christianity exalts God as the Sovereign Ruler of the universe. His laws and standards have the ultimate authority on how an individual should conduct himself. Freedom and liberty for an individual, and for society at large, can only exist as we submit under the Sovereignty of Almighty God. “His Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom, and His dominion rules throughout all generations.” (Psalm 145:13) Where God’s law is forsaken, there is tyranny. “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive with them.” (Proverbs 28:4) Opposition to tyranny is obedience to God. Christians must demonstrate the liberty that they have in Christ by opposing the forces of evil and wickedness that are seeking to destroy both Christianity and our American Constitutional Republic.

We have regular subscribers from around the world including Russia, Canada and Mongolia. He has also written several new eBooks while working from his home, which you can access on the RAN site. If you sign up for his weekly podcast you will automatically receive your gift copy of the eBook, Mixing Church

Dr. and Mrs. Scarborough met and became acquainted with Hunter in Washington DC while facilitating Bible studies with members of Congress and other governmental leaders. At the time, Hunter was working for Senator Tim Scott as a member of his Legislative team. Hunter later joined the staff of Senator Josh Hawley, serving on his Communications team. He brings a rich resumé of practical experience as well as a deep commitment to Christ. Our History
Way Engineering's quest for building excellence began in 1918 when a modest but dedicated refrigeration business opened its doors in Houston. Way Engineering, Ltd is one of the nation’s largest and most experienced mechanical contractors. We specialize in commercial air conditioning, plumbing, piping, and the maintenance of these systems. Way Engineering is at the forefront of design build/design assist, preconstruction, commissioning, building information modeling, and quality control. Throughout the years, Way has excelled by pioneering new mechanical system technologies and always striving to be at the forefront of technological innovation. As early as 1930, Way pioneered the use of ice as a cooling agent in early thermal storage air conditioning systems installed in churches and movie theaters, a technology used extensively today. Innovation and education remain two of the cornerstones of the Way “building excellence” philosophy. McCorvey Companies purchased Way Engineering, LTD. on December 3, 2012. It was an exciting venture for everyone involved. The company relocated to 8610 Wallisville Rd, Houston, TX. With new offices, more warehouse space, and new state of the art machinery, Way Engineering is stronger than ever. The Way commitment to building excellence began in 1918 and McCorvey Companies will continue that excellence into the future.
