The Right Choice

ABOUT MARY NAN HUFFMAN

Mary Nan Huffman is the experienced choice for Harris County. She is a mom and a smart, tough prosecutor, not a politician.

“As your next district attorney, I will hold criminals accountable by enforcing the laws of the State of Texas and then administering appropriate punishment. I will protect the public by supporting the efforts of law enforcement and be a voice for victims. I will return experience to the district attorney’s office, so the citizens of Harris County have a safe place to live, work, and play.”

Mary Nan Huffman is running for Harris County District Attorney because public safety is most important. She looks forward to seeking justice in evidence-based investigations while running the office with the highest ethical standards because that is what the citizens of Harris County expect and deserve. Mary Nan Huffman grew up with her four siblings in Denton, Texas. Huffman watched her parents’ involvement in local politics and learned from an early age the importance of public service. Mary Nan graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Political Science degree and attended St. Mary’s University School of Law. While in law school, she worked at the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office and developed a passion for criminal prosecution. Mary Nan Huffman served as a prosecutor in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office for almost 10 years, rising quickly to become the Chief Felony Prosecutor in the Child Exploitation Division and over the Internet Crimes Against

The Huffman Family Children (ICAC) Division. During her time as Chief of Child Exploitation, she prosecuted a wide range of internet-related crimes committed against children: child human trafficking; the possession, production, and promotion of child pornography, child sexual assault; and any other case involving the sexual exploitation of children online. She directed the work of multi-agency task forces from federal, state, and local agencies. Huffman’s work as a prosecutor of child exploitation cases has earned criminal conviction yielding 11 life sentences and four 99-year sentences. She has earned a national reputation and is sought after as a special prosecutor for difficult child exploitation prosecutions. Huffman now works as an attorney for the Houston Police Officers’ Union representing officers in a variety of matters associated with duties as an officer. Mary Nan has been married to Eli Huffman III for 11 years. The Huffman family attends St. Cecilia Catholic Church. They have 2 young sons. Huffman wants her children to grow up in a safe place and believes everyone deserves to feel safe. Huffman loves Harris County and thinks it’s one of the greatest, friendliest places to live, but believes our hospitality doesn’t have to extend to people who commit violent crimes.

“In the spirit of those Judges who forged a path toward fairness, equal access and justice for all, I, Cheryl Elliott Thornton announce my candidacy for Judge of the 164th Civil Judicial District Court of Harris County.”

VOTE DEMOCRAT TUESDAY, NOV. 3, 2020

F

Dear Harris County Voters:

For over 30 years I have chosen a life of public service and, in turn, have earned the trust and respect of the community. In my continued effort to serve you, the citizens of Harris County, and continue the path already blazed, I embrace this opportunity to provide a vision of fairness and equal access in a manner that each citizen can look with pride. As a public servant I currently serve as Senior Assistant County Attorney for Harris County. I have also served as General Counsel for Texas Southern University and as an Administrative Law Judge and Assistant Attorney General IV for the State of Texas. I have also had the pleasure of teaching future leaders at Lone Star and Houston Community College. Because I believe a public servant should also serve her community

through community service, I have volunteered at all levels of my community. I have served, for example, as Precinct Chair for Precinct 228, board member for my civic club, Co-Chair for the Houston Bar Association’s Gender Fairness Committee and serve on the Houston Lawyer Referral Service Board, and have served as Senate District 13’s General Counsel and Chair of the Houston Police Advisory Board. And I have been honored by being awarded 2018 Top 50 Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs of Texas Award, the Houston Bar Association’s President Award and the Alex Award for Legal Excellence to name a few. To continue my public service to Harris County I am asking for your support in my quest to continue the path forward and ensure fairness, accessibility and justice for all by electing me Harris County JUDGE, 164th Civil Judicial District Court.

18TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF TEXAS

“WE NEED GOOD, FAIR JUDGES ON THE BENCH.”

VOTE FOR JUDGE FREDERICKA PHILLIPS, CHERYL ELLIOTT THORNTON AND JERALYNN MANOR ON ELECTION DAY!

NEW LEGAL EDITION COMING IN DECEMBER 2020 A Little Hocus Pocus in a Harris County, Texas Courtroom?

QUANELL X: “Somehow this case has magically reappeared in the 151st Civil District Court that’s presided over by Judge Mike Engelhart.” In 2008 an Asian businesswoman purchased a property in Southwest Houston next door to Star Furniture on the Southwest Freeway. Soon after Star Furniture began a campaign of influence using strong-arm tactics with their friends at the City of Houston. Melvynn Wolff and Gary Gibson of Star were both in communication with Councilman Al Hoang's office to do damage to the Asian businesswoman according to Quanell X. Star found out in 2010 that the Asian businesswoman owned the Private Street abutting Star's property. Nonetheless, Star pushed forward with using the City to harass the neighboring business. Several years later, the Asian businesswoman purchased another parcel of land nearby which was also abutting Star Furniture. This parcel of land was also previously owned by Wolff Interests. Wolff Interests owns the property where Star Furniture is on the Southwest Freeway (Star is a tenant of Wolff). The new parcel was once owned by Star's landlord but sold because it was "in excess of their needs", according to court documents. When the parcel was sold Wolff did not retain a drainage easement on the property. In fact, according to the deed signed by Melvynn Wolff and his sister Shirley Toomim, Wolff Interests agreed to " defend and hold harmless all assigns and heirs" that came after them.

QUANELL X

So, even though Wolff was contractually obligated to defend the current owners of the property, they instead joined forces with Star in a suit against the Asian businesswoman regardless of the contract they had previously agreed to. The parcel of land was purportedly used by Star for drainage of the rainwater from Star's asphalt parking lot. That's right, they were sending their water onto a neighboring property. The parcel was developed into a parking lot by the Asian businesswoman and Star cried foul. Star claimed that they immediately had drainage issues due to the development, which was Approved

JUDGE MIKE ENGELHART

and Permitted by the City of Houston. Star Furniture filed suit claiming a violation of the water code. Star Furniture hired a contractor to break the curb on the Private Street owned by the Asian businesswoman in an effort to drain rainwater from their parking lot. During the suit Star took measures to install an illegal and unpermitted pump, to pump their rainwater into the neighboring Windwater Village neighborhood. This pump was discovered by City Inspectors and according to City Records, Gary Gibson of Star told City Investigator 279 the pump was removed, yet it is still in place and operating.

Once again, Star used their strong-arm tactics with the city. Even setting up a meeting with representatives of Mayor Sylvester Turner's office. (Christon Butler was one City employee in attendance). At that meeting Star's contractor made the City aware that Star had a sewerage problem as well leaking into their parking lot, and the Contractor Golan Construction had pumped it into the drive of the neighboring Windwater Village. He said it was "ok because he poured some bleach into the water" before pumping. Star's lawyers Dylan Russell and Joe Slovacek are definitely "connected" in the Harris County Courthouse according to Quanell X. Slovacek is a member of the Texas Ethics Commission and as such knows many of the politicians in Houston. Don't forget, Judges are Politicians too. The lawsuit made its way through the system and Star ended up non-suiting most of the lawsuit in 2018 according to Quanell X. Fast forward to 2020, and a little Forum Shopping later, the case has magically reappeared and has landed in the 151st Civil District Court, perhaps the Strong Arm of Star Furniture has reared it's ugly head again with their penchant for discriminatory actions against minorities Star and Wolff Interests must be made to pay for their illegal actions according to Quanell X.

Wendell, a Champion for Christ

I

by JOSEPH MENSLAGE

I first heard of Wendell Champion, candidate for US Congress, Texas District 18, from my Pastor Johnny Teague, who is also running for Congress. He praised Champion as a true a man of God, remarking that there are few people who possess a faith as strong as his. Then, last week, my friend Curtis Brown, who has a radio show on 100.7, The Word, called “Battlefield Connections,” asked me to sit in on his radio show with Champion. I had never heard Champion speak before that day, but I was astonished by his bold devotion to Christ and how he got to where he is today. Champion was raised by a single mother in New York City, and later in upstate New York, where his family lived on welfare and grew up poor. He was saved at six years old and grew up singing, “We shall overcome, black and white together, we shall overcome.” However, rather than living as a victim of his circumstances and becoming defined by them, Champion excelled academically and was able to attend and graduate from the prestigious US Military Academy at West Point New York. Remarkably, Champion obtained the rank of Captain in the Army. In fact, that is how he came up with his campaign slogan, “From Welfare to West Point.” Champion met and married his wife Cynthia, who is also a West Point alumnus, about 30 years ago, and after completing military service, they moved to Houston, where they raised a son and a daughter. Then, Champion earned his law degree and worked as an attorney and in the corporate world while he and his wife raised their family. But Champion wanted so much more for our community. He now works for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and also serves as a youth minister. He volunteers his time at Haverstock Hills Apartments, helping underprivileged families and kids with job training,

and sharing the Gospel. “I felt called into action,” Champion told me. “This is not the right direction for our country. If I will not stand up, then who will?” Champion’s philosophy is that you have to meet people where they are. “I remember going into a cocktail lounge once spreading my message. A young lady whom he met there asked me if I see a contradiction going into a place like that trying to reach people. I told her ‘not at all.’ Christ met people where they were and was often criticized by the religious leaders of His time for doing so,” he said. “My message is love and hope, without condemning. We cannot separate the Gospel of Christ from politics. We have to vote Biblical values. I meet people wherever they are, from parking lots, to parks, block walking, and many other non-traditional ways of running a campaign,” he concluded. People complain that there are no good people who run for office, and far too often, that is true. This year, locally, our community has candidates who are running for Congress – Johnny Teague and Wendell Champion – who both deserve and need your vote. Some say that neither of them has a chance of winning, but I am sure King Saul already had David’s grave dug when he went out to face Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. I assure you that Teague and Champion winning their Congressional races is not as big of a challenge as David slaying Goliath; but it will take a lot. It will take Christians uniting, volunteering, and voting for Biblical values once more. If we continue traveling the path our nation is heading down, it will not be long before going to church will be a crime. We cannot lose this great nation; this nation that was founded on Godly values.

Judge Yeary is the only currently serving Judge on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to have previously worked at the Court as an attorney. From 1991 to 1992, he served as briefing attorney to the late Honorable Judge Bill M. White. After his clerkship, Judge Yeary spent time working first as a civil litigator and as a criminal defense attorney and then as a prosecutor. Before his election in 2014, he served

He briefed and argued cases before both the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and the Texas Supreme Court. He also prepared and filed briefs in cases before the United States Supreme Court.

JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY

Judge Yeary believes it is the job of the Legislature and the Governor to establish policy for our state. He believes that the Judicial Department of our government should exercise restraint when called upon to interpret the law. The Judiciary must be fiercely independent, but also cautious in the exercise of its immense power. This is particularly true with regard to Judges serving on high courts.

Champion’s Mission PAID FOR BY CHAMPION FOR CONGRESS

I am running for Congress to serve you. I went from Welfare to West Point. One of the things I learned in my life as a soldier is that when you’re on a battlefield, you don’t leave people behind. You go in and you pull them out! For too long, too many of our elected officials have prospered themselves by convincing our neighbors they cannot succeed because they were born poor. I know that’s simply not true. I know it because I’ve lived it. I have experienced a front row seat to the American Dream. I’m prepared to run on a message of hope, a message of truth. I know that if you want to lead, you have to serve. I know that real leaders put others’ needs before themselves. A real leader serves the food and eats last. Support me as I endeavor to serve the families of Congressional District 18! Together, we can improve the lives of the community. Together, we can alter the destiny of a great American city. Together, we all advance. Together, we can help more of our neighbors be the Champions they were meant to be! Together We Win!

I am proud to serve you as a Justice on the 14th Court of Appeals. The Courts of Appeal hear every appeal from every lower court in the district. We hear criminal cases, civil cases, family cases, everything. This demanding case load requires experienced, fair justices who follow the law as written. I am that justice. I began my service to Texas in 2002 when Governor Perry appointed me Judge of the 152nd District Court in Harris County. After that I served as Judge of the 334th District Court. Governor Perry appointed me to the 14th Court of Appeals in 2013, where I have served since. I have been a member of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Board, Civil Administrative Judge, and in 2011, I was elected to lead the entire Harris County state judiciary as Local Administrative Judge. While leading the Harris County judiciary, I helped institute new specialty courts designed to assist those with mental health challenges such that the criminal justice system, and the citizens, weren’t burdened with the enormous cost of mental health services. I helped institute a court where our veterans could get help with readjustment issues that would otherwise cast them into the criminal justice system. In 2013, I began my service on the 14th Court of Appeals. In my first year

on the Court of Appeals, I wrote more opinions than any of my colleagues. I continue to administer a very busy docket in a careful and thoughtful manner. I have also continued my service statewide. I am in my second term as a Commissioner on the Texas Access to Justice Commission and I am one of just five judges in Texas selected by the Supreme Court to sit on the Multi-District Litigation panel. I make my decisions without fear or favor. Every single litigant before me get a full and fair consideration of their case. I believe strongly in following the law as written by the legislature and have never substituted my own personal beliefs for that of our lawmakers. I do not legislate from the bench. These are difficult times for our country. It is more important than ever that we elect judges who are experienced, fair, and who will uphold the rule of law. I pledge to you that I will continue to do exactly that. I believe Texas is an exceptional place. I have dedicated my entire professional career to serving Texas. I believe in the rule of law and equal justice for all citizens. If you believe, like I do, that the Courts are critical to maintaining the spirit of Texas, I respectfully as for your vote. Please make the WISE choice and vote for Justice Ken Wise, 14th Court of Appeals.
