Southwest Inn: One of Houston’s most devastating fires...
H
Nearly a decade later, it’s still unclear how it happened, but the Southwest Inn fire ultimately claimed the lives of five firefighters and injured at least fifteen more.
Houston, TX- Inspection records show that Southwest Inn, historically located at 6855 Southwest Freeway had been receiving citations for problems with its overall fire alarm system since 2009. There were broken smoke detectors in several rooms, problems with fire suppression systems, expired permits and blocked exits. In 2011, HFD's database said that the hotel was "in compliance." Yet, in 2012, more citations were added. When a final inspection of the hotel was conducted on May 8, 2013, no further action was needed. In addition to the motel’s extensive history of receiving citations for defective equipment, only two months before the fire, inspectors from the City of Houston fined Bhojan Restaurant, a vegetarian Indian cafe located on Southwest Inn’s premises, for not cleaning its grease traps. On May 31, 2013, what began as a little restaurant fire - a common occurrence for firefighters everywhere - quickly escalated into an overwhelming blaze that ultimately took the lives of five Houston Fire Department firefighters when part of the structure collapsed on them. It was the worst tragedy in the Houston Fire Department’s history. A restaurant worker rushed into the Inn and notified them that a fire had started. Workers were knocking on doors and windows in a panic. Guests were trying to escape. A mother and her five kids ran for their lives, leaving everything behind. One occupant who had only stepped away momentarily to fill out an application for an apartment was shocked to see the hotel on fire when he came back. People were frantically screaming while trying to evacuate. It was like a war zone. The firefighters were trying hard to put the fire out when suddenly there was a loud boom, like a cannon going off, a
big fireball shot up, and then they were gone. "They tried to get us out of this place, they lost their lives in the process,” said one of the occupants. "This is the worst day of my life," said HFD Rick Flanagan, who lost four of his friends in one day. “I could never have imagined this." There are a few hard days ahead of us, too. Keep us in your prayers.
Southwest Inn: The tragedies continue
Along with five firefighters losing their lives and fifteen more being injured, the Southwest Inn was destroyed. The electrical system for a billboard that sits on the property was also damaged. Almost a decade later,
QUANELL X: “The May 31, 2013 fire at the Southwest Inn, claimed the lives of five Houston Firefighters. At least fifteen City of Houston firefighters were injured during the blaze.”
QUANELL X: “The billboard’s electrical system was damaged. TBack in 2021, this billboard was still in unsafe conditions resulting in a construction worker being electrocuted.”
QUANELL X WANT’S TO KNOW: “Will JUDGE DONNA ROTH stand with the citizens of Houston and Houston First Responders? Or will she BOW to special interest money?”
there’s no evidence of the billboard’s electrical system ever being repaired. Despite several attempts, there has been no success locating any permits or other information related to repairs. Sources allege that "repairs" made on the billboard were done by unlicensed workers, and do not meet city codes. As a result of the billboard's faulty electrical system, a construction worker was electrocuted in 2021; and Houston Firefighters along with the loved ones of the deceased firefighters are unable to have annual memorials at the site, a tradition that began in 2014 on the first anniversary of the deadly fire.
JUDGE ROTH
QUANELL X
Long-time Community Activist Quanell X speaks out.
“Judge Donna Roth of the 295th Harris County District Court has the authority to assure that the Southwest Inn billboard is repaired and up to city code. As of 2022, she hasn’t done anything to rectify the situation. She has a duty to ensure the safety of Harris County Citizens and a moral obligation to the Houston First Responders and loved ones of the deceased firefighters. We want to know if Judge Roth is going to put the community first or choose special interest money to favor her campaign contributors.” - - Quanell X

By Aubrey R. Taylor
“I can remember as a young boy if we were walking down the street acting disrespectful any neighbor could discipline us. Then when we got home and grandmama had heard what were doing we then got a second whipping. What happened to us?” — Quanell X
In case you don't know, Quanell X was born, Quanell Ralph Evans in Los Angeles, California. So, just for the record, Quanell’s parents, were both members of the Nation of Islam. However, after their divorce, Quanell found himself living in Houston with his mom and younger brother in the South Acres neighborhood, where he ended up attending Worthing High School. Now, what a lot of you guys may not know, is that Quanell was actually inspired by a September 1990, speech that was delivered by the Honorable Louis Farrakhan at the Sam Houston Coliseum to join the Nation of Islam -against the wishes of his parents. Once a member, it didn't take long for him to rise through the ranks, becoming a spokesman for the organization. A lot has happened since then. But, his passion for people hasn't changed. What a lot of folks don't know about Quanell X, is that he's seen and witnessed a lot in his lifetime, and he's angered by injustice -- and not just injustices that are perpetrated against Black people either. And if you ask me, I think a lot of his fight comes from walking into an apartment as a young man, back in July of 1992, and finding his brother Quinten and three others with bullets to their heads. That being said, when you hear him passionately defend his clients, and those who have suffered injustice, just know that he's coming from a place that many of us might not understand.

HCRP CHAIR CINDY SIEGEL: “Freedom
and Liberty are two of the most beautiful words in the dictionary. It means that I have the personal freedom to make decisions on how I am going to live my life. They mean that I and my daughters have the opportunity to make our lives into whatever we want with hard work. However, along with freedom and liberty goes personal responsibility. That means working to ensure that we continue to have freedom and liberty now and for future generations because without America standing for freedom and liberty - where do people go?”

FIVE STAR GENERAL: “Freedom, generally, is having the ability to act or change without constraint. A person has the freedom to do things that will not, in theory, or in practice, be prevented by other forces. Outside of the human realm, freedom generally does not have this political or psychological dimension. Freedom means African Americans not being murdered unjustly by law enforcement. Freedom is quality education for every person. Freedom is when Black America is paid reparations. When that is done Blacks will enjoy financial freedom in my opinion.”

Successful Businessman and Former Prizefighter Eric Carr Discusses What Freedom Means By Eric Carr
"What does freedom mean to me? Let me see what freedom truly means to me. FREEDOM is when you can have the resources to meet your needs and satisfy your wants as well. In my situation, FREEDOM means being your own boss. Calling your own shots. Determining your destiny. FREEDOM to me is having stability in my life. There’s a passage of scripture that says, "A feast is made with laughter, and wine makes the heart merry, but "money" it answers all things." – Ecclesiastics 4:19, in the Holy Bible.
What FREEDOM means to me is having the ability to think what I want to think – not having to succumb to what society says I must do, but doing what I want to do. Being so self-sufficient that I don't have to compromise myself for anyone. There was once a great boxing champion who I will always admire, “The Great Muhammad Ali.” He was told that he had to conform to be champ, but Ali said, “I will be the champ like I want to be – not the champ like you want to be.” That statement has stuck with me throughout my entire life. I will forever respect him for making that statement. Whether you choose to get a degree, master a trade, have a business, climb the corporate ladder, or do what makes you whole on your own terms – you’re still just as FREE AS THE NEXT MAN! So, to me, freedom is to thine own self be true. So, earn your money, and live your life to the FULLEST!!!"
