Harris County Clerk Dr. Diane Trautman Welcoming Newly Appointed Judge Lesley Briones into the Judicial Ranks I must admit that I have mixed emotions as it relates to the Briones appointment. Don’t get me wrong; I’m ecstatic to see a well-qualified Hispanic female take the bench. However, it was heartbreaking to see Judge William “Bill” McLeod and his large contingent of supporters plead with Judge Lina Hidalgo, Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Precinct 3, Commissioner Steve Radack, and Precinct 4, Commissioner R. Jack Cagle only to find out afterwards that the decision on the matter was possibly decided prior to the meeting even taking place. So, I can understand the anger and dismay felt by many of those who supported Judge William “Bill” McLeod — a man worked his butt off to earn his victory, and the victories for so many other Democrats in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the Midterm Election.

I don’t know about you, but as for me, I am eager to see Judge Lesley Briones, and former Judge William “Bill” McLeod face off in 2020.

DIANE TRAUTMAN DELIVERED ON HER PROMISE TO MAKE VOTING EASIER IN HARRIS COUNTY Houston, Texas — A few months ago, Texas Secretary of State David Whitley approved Harris County as one of the six Texas counties with a population of more than 100,000 to participate in the Countywide Polling Place Program. With over 2 million registered voters, this makes Harris County the largest county in the country to implement this program. The state program allows eligible counties to establish non-precinct based Election Day Voting Centers.

“The voters of Harris County have made it clear that a Countywide Polling Place Program would have a positive impact on elections and I am confident that the transition to a Countywide Polling Place Program will be successful,” an-

nounced County Clerk Dr. Diane Trautman.

Voters will now be able to vote anywhere in Harris County on Election Day, beginning with the May 4, 2019, Uniform Election. All elections, including general, special, joint, primaries, and runoffs will be recommended to use the Countywide Polling Place Program.

Judge Lesley Briones is newly appointed to the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 bench. Controversy surrounded the quick replacement of the Civil Court at Law No. 4 Former Judge William ‘Bill’ McLeod when he triggered an automatic constitutional resignation from his position by publicly announcing his intent to run for higher office. Judge McLeod tried to retract the statement and petition the powers-that-be to appoint him back into the seat, but the damage was done. Judge Briones was appointed to serve as Judge of Civil Court at Law No. 4 by a 3-2 vote of the Commissioners Court. Important to note the two Republican commissioners voted to keep Judge McLeod in the seat as a holdover.

The four-year term for Houston’s current Mayor will soon end, and several candidates are entering the race vying to unseat the incumbent, Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Our current Mayor has garnered his share of opposition, and the number of candidates entering the race is growing. With the deadline to enter the race to be Houston’s next mayor at the end of summer, 2019 political hopefuls may enter the race until the deadline. Although the race is nonpartisan, candidates’ political affiliations require little guessing. With a law that changed limiting the Mayoral seat to two, four-year terms, Mayor Turner is limited to one more victory to stay in office. That may be an uphill battle for this incumbent. Mayor Turner has a strong base of supporters who are backing him to secure that second and final victory. However, the Mayor’s tenure has been wrought with a recent and very public fight over the controversial Proposition B implementation. Houston voters cast ballots overwhelmingly in favor of Proposition B despite Mayor Turner’s strong campaign against it.

Proposition B calls for a 25% firefighter pay increase. An increase that the Mayor says cannot take place without mass firefighter layoffs or implementation over five years.

Between lawsuits and mediation, if you ask any current or retired City of Houston firefighter about the current Mayor, there seems to be a consensus, they are not supporting this Mayor for reelection. If that disfavor permeates family and friends of those affected by Proposition B Mayor Turner could be in trouble.

Nonetheless, Mayor Turner still has a solid base of supporters. The Acres Homes native and Harvard law grad appeals to voters who have loved the name Sylvester Turner since he was a young state representative and Mayoral hopeful in 1991. He goes over well with progressives and has worked at City Hall to bridge the community with the city’s welfare.

Bill King is in the race to be Houston’s next mayor, but he is no new opponent to the incumbent in the race.

In 2015, King was Mayor Turner’s leading opponent.

Mayor Sylvester Turner will be seeking re-election on Tues., November 5, 2019.

Some thought that King would take the race, but Mayor Turner handed King a marginal defeat. His borderline victory coupled with the current state of City Hall leads some to believe that it is possible to overthrow the incumbent in the upcoming Tuesday, November 5, 2019, Mayoral Election. However, the stakes are a little bit different with new faces entering the race and splitting the vote. Bill King, if elected as mayor vows to “Clean Up City Hall.” Signs displaying King’s watchword can be found on the city’s lower end where he may have less name recognition. King may garner crossover appeal as a former panelist on Fox’s show What’s Your Point and a former Houston Chronicle columnist for over a decade.

An attorney and author, Bill King, is well versed in public policy and is well equipped to lead the country’s fourth largest city. We will see if King can unseat the incumbent, making this a comeback story for Houston history.

Tony Buzbee may be new to the ballot, but the affluent personal injury attorney loaned nearly 6 million dollars to his campaign to get out the word that he is coming for the Mayor’s seat. Buzbee’s campaign strate-

gies include hosting rallies and exposing ‘corruption’ at City Hall. The plaintiff’s lawyer is not holding back with accusations of corruption, kickbacks and double dipping.

He is drawing the attention of voters with his outspoken, charismatic call to the carpet of the incumbent in this race. One might say he is buzzing. Buzbee is wellknown for making a buzz. He once drew media attention for buying a military tank (yes, a whole tank) and parking it in front of his River Oaks home, as well as hosting our current president for a fundraiser and donating $500,000 to his campaign. Known for monumental wins in civil court and ostentatious behavior outside the court, Buzbee can be noted as saying he will not take corporate donations, and, if elected, he will donate his salary to charity. We will soon see if this new politician can appeal to voters.

There were 979,401 voters deemed eligible to vote in the 2015 Mayoral election, but a mere 268,872 voters showed up to cast their ballot. One may speculate that the political climate caused a historically high voter turnout back in the November 2018 midterm elections (thereby turning the county blue) and we may see a similar increase in voter turnout for the 2019 Mayor’s race. With so many candidates in the race for city council and Mayor, surely we will see a rise in voter turnout. Official filing to enter a race for a seat at Houston’s City Hall will open on Saturday, July 20, 2019, and close Monday, August 19, 2019. Therefore the final lineup before the voters go to the polls is still in the making. However, Kendall L. Baker, Demetria Smith, Derek Broze, and Anton Dowls have all appointed their campaign treasurer according to information on file with the City Secretary’s Office.

Since winning the November 2018 election in a Democratic sweep and taking office January 1st, the newly elected Harris County Clerk Diane Trautman made it so that Harris County voters may now vote at any polling location on Election Day. So, voters who are adamant that they do not cast ballots early are no longer required to make it to the location near their home but can vote at any countywide Voting Center.

According to the folks at the Houston City Secretary’s Office candidates looking to run for office on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, can pay a filing fee, or they can collect signatures to have their name placed on the ballot. So, if you are a candidate wanting to run for MAYOR OF HOUSTON, you can pay a 1,250.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. If you are a candidate, who would like to run for THE CITY OF HOUSTON CONTROLLER position you can pay a 750.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. And if you are a candidate looking to run for one of the HOUSTON CITY COUNCIL positions you can pay a 500.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot.

However, if you plan on going the route of collecting signatures to have your name placed on the ballot, the exact number of signatures needed won’t be determined until sometime in July of this year from what I understand. But, to be sure, all candidates interested in running for office on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in the City of Houston General Election can call (832)393-1100 to speak directly with someone in the City Secretary’s Office. Judge Maria T. Jackson has been the presiding Judge of the 339th State District Court in Houston, Harris County, Texas since the election of 2008. Judge Jackson presides over serious felony offenses, which run the gamut from lowlevel drug offenses to capital murder.

She has presided over one hundred jury trials and several have been featured on The First 48 Hour national television show. She has appeared on many Houston radio and media outlets like Red, White and Blue Political Show, Magic 102, KCOH, and The Prison Show on FM 90.1. Judge Jackson has taken the lead in implementing sweeping changes for DWI probationers in her court. One of the things I love most about Judge Ronnisha Bowman is the fact that she is battle-tested. I mean, she just knows how to win. While she was the underdog in both of her 2018 contests, she (in my book) proved that she can stand on her own and duke it out with the best of them! Yes, she gained my respect back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the Democratic Primary when she faced off against fellow Democrat Harold J. Landreneau. While some doubted this rising “DEMOCRATIC STAR” she showed poise, grace, faith in God, and confidence in her ability to get the job done! And after the smoke had cleared, Ronnisha Bowman had amassed 74,045 votes for 53.07 percent of the vote while Landreneau fell short with 65.491 votes for 46.93 percent of the vote. But she wasn’t done!

After taking out her fellow Democrat, Bowman turned her attention to the November 2018 midterms in what was supposed to be her toughest challenge – unseating the incumbent at the time, Republican Judge Bill Harmon. While many doubted her once again, calling her young and inexperienced, she took it all in stride and kept her eyes firmly affixed on her goal of becoming judge for Harris County Criminal Court #2. And in the end, her hard work, determination, tenacity,

Mike Knox is a native Houstonian.

He married his high school sweetheart in 1977 and they have raised one son; who now serves the city as a Houston Police Officer. Mike Knox obtained an Associate of Arts degree from the Houston Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston – Downtown while working as a Houston Police Officer.

Mike has a long history of honorable public service.

Mike Knox is a veteran who served in the United States Air Force and served over 15 years as a Houston Police Officer.

Mike was one of two officers responsible for the creation of the Houston Police Department’s first divisional gang unit in 1988 and helped create and served on the original board of directors for the Texas Gang Investigators Association.

Mike authored a book entitled Gangsta in the House; Understanding Gang Culture, which was published in 1995. This book added to the knowledge base on gang culture and was recognized in 2001 by the National Gang Research Center who awarded it the prestigious “Thrasher” award.

Mike served his fellow officers as a Board Member of the Houston Police Patrolmen’s Union and chaired the HPPU Political Action Committee. In addition, he served as editor of the “Sentinel” (HPPU) monthly newsletter.

Shortly after publishing his book in 1995, Mike began a consulting business focused on helping law enforcement, schools districts, and communities understand and deal with street gangs and violent youthful offenders.

Mike Knox has served his community as a board member of the Spring Branch Education Foundation and was among the original funders of the Spring Branch ISD “Fund for the Future” endowment. He contributed to the creation of the Spring Branch Good Neighbor program.

Mike was recruited in 2007 to help the Spring Branch Management District develop the Public Safety component of its service plan and worked as their Director of Community Service for three years.

For the past seven years Mike Knox has served as the President of the Yupon Estates Homeowners Association.

Mike has a deep interest and investment in Houston and believes Houston City Council deserves a dedicated servant.

It is indeed an honor and privilege to serve as your judge for the 246th Family District Court in Harris County. Before being elected to the bench, I often reflected on events that have caused me to question the integrity of our courts. In January 2017, President Obama implored us to “grab a clipboard, get some signatures, and run for office” if we were disappointed in our elected officials. As fate would have it, after I entertained the thought of running for judge, I was in the audience when Congressman Castro said, “it’s time to get off the sideline and do something.” At that moment, I knew my time to effectuate change had come, and with your prayers and support, we did it!

I practiced law for over a decade before becoming your judge of the 246th Family District Court. During my time on the other side of the bench, I represented clients in all phases of litigation, from mediations and arbitrations to bench and jury trials. Actively practicing law before becoming a Judge has given me a wealth of technical knowledge, but my family has been the most integral factor in preparing me to serve as a family court judge. As a wife of nearly 16 years (and counting) and mother of two sons, I understand the compassion and empathy required during times of discord and conflict. The practicality of daily family life, coupled with my years of experience representing families, has given me a unique perspective on life and the job I’ve been hired to do. As an officer of the court, I observed judges completely disregarding the rule of law and rendering decisions based on feelings (and sometimes favoritism). Litigants in Harris County courts deserve able, fair, and independent jurists on the bench and I am honored to say that I am already making a difference in Harris County, Texas. As your judge, I am fully committed to interpreting the law honestly and integrally. Every person who enters my courtroom can be confident that my rulings will be based solely on the merits of his or her case.

I can assure you that justice is (now) administered in the 246th Family District Court in a fair, compassionate and impartial manner. Governor Abbott Appoints Four To Texas Southern University Board Of Regents

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Pamela Medina, Albert H. Myres, Sr., and Jay S. Zeidman to the Texas Southern University Board of Regents for terms set to expire on February 1, 2025. Additionally, he appointed Marc C. Carter for a term set to expire on February 1, 2023.

Pamela Medina of Houston, is a trust and asset management officer for Cadence Bank, N.A. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas, Houston Bar Association, Houston Estate & Financial Forum, and the Greater Houston Partnership, scholarship chair and past president of the Mexican American Bar Association of Houston, and an alumna of Leadership Houston Class of Thirty One. In addition, she is a volunteer with United Way of Greater Houston, lifetime member of The University of Texas - Texas Exes, financial literacy mentor with Yellowstone Academy Lemonade Day, and a board member of St. Patrick Chapel Alumni Association. Medina received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from The University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Albert H. Myres, Sr. of Liberty is president and CEO of Octcet, Inc. and a rancher. He is a former senior executive with Reliant Energy and Shell Oil Company. He has served on numerous community boards including the YMCA of Greater Houston and The Nature Conservancy. He was formerly appointed to serve on the Texas Southern University Advisory Committee and the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation. Myres received a Bachelor of Science in finance from The University of Tulsa.

Jay S. Zeidman of Houston is the managing director of Altitude Ventures. He is a board member of Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, Emancipation Park, and Houston First Corporation. He is a former board member of the Texas Christian University National Alumni Board and The Small Business Advisory Task Force. Zeidman received a Bachelor of Science in economics and political science from Texas Christian University, where he also served as student body president, and a Master of Business Administration from the Jesse Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University.

Marc C. Carter of Houston is an attorney and previously served as Judge of the 228th District Court for 16 years. Carter created and presided over the first Veterans Treatment Court in Texas.

He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, United States District Court, Criminal Justice Act Panel, Houston Bar Association, State Bar Foundation, Lone Star Veterans Association, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Carter served as a Captain in the United States Army. When asked if they would serve again as jurors based on their experience in County Civil Court at Law No. 3, I’m pleased to inform you that

Judge Sedrick T. Walker II is a Houston native and graduate of Texas A&M University. He graduated with honors from A&M in 2005 with a B.S. in Political Science.

After graduating from University of Texas School of Law in Austin, he worked as a prosecutor at the Harris County District Attorney's Office from 2009 to 2012 where he handled thousands of cases ranging from misdemeanors to 1st-degree felonies. His experience included working on every aspect of cases from the initial filing stage, gathering evidence, making grand jury presentations in felony cases, and ultimately the trial phase. As an Assistant DA, he was recognized for his willingness to work long hours, fairness in negotiations with the defense bar, and a constant commitment to a prosecutor’s ultimate duty – to seek justice, not merely to convict.

After working tirelessly in the criminal courtrooms of Harris County for many years he decided to run for the Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 11 bench and won, back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

It’s time Harris County had a D.A. for the many, not the few.

Audia was born to her loving parents in a working class community. Her father served as a paratrooper and Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol in Vietnam, followed by a career as an aviation engineer. Her mother was a lifelong educator who taught special needs children for more than thirty years in the public sector. As a woman of color, Audia grew up with a deep appreciation for community and public service while understanding the social and economic issues that plague our society.

Audia attended the University of Rhode Island on a full four-year NCAA College Basketball Scholarship, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Afterwards, Audia attended Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she earned an academic scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Her life of public service took shape as a Summer Law Clerk in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. After earning her law degree, Audia worked as a Counsel Fellow for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

She quickly advanced from the duties of a Fellow to a Congressional Staffer managing the House Judiciary Committee Portfolio for the Congresswoman. In approximately 50 hearings, Audia prepared detailed analysis of key legislation affecting various subject matters, including crime and terrorism, immigration and cybersecurity while effectively communicating the pros and cons of each legislative item to the Congresswoman.

Following her experiences at the United States House of Representatives, Audia joined the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney where she quickly advanced up the ranks.

While working in the misdemeanor and felony trial bureau she witnessed courts disproportionately filed with the poor, people of color, intellectually disabled, and people suffering with addiction standing accused of non-violent offenses.

It became clear that the criminal justice system was sorely broken and was not working for the benefit of our largest and most vulnerable communities.

Audia is fueled with determination that all citizens should have equal

rights and opportunities within the criminal justice system.

Harris County deserves to be a national champion for criminal justice reform, using a modern approach to empower the community. Audia will use strategies that have been proven, among other things, to: ● Combat serious crime; ● Treat everyone fairly and equally; ● Reduce likelihood of future crimes; ● Build trust in the District Attorney’s Office; ● Rehabilitate non-violent offenders through special programs; ● Make Harris County a safer place to raise a family, live and work; ● Focus juvenile prosecution on rehabilitation rather than punishment; and, ● Seriously address and protect the needs of victims.

In case you don’t know, Judge Dedra Davis would have still defeated Republican Judge Brent Gamble in the race for Judge, 270th Civil District Court – even without the 105,158 straight-ticket voting cushion she received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. Here’s why: Dedra Davis received 651,843 overall votes.

When you subtract the 515,812 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 136,031 votes. Com-

paratively speaking, if you subtract the 410,654 straight-ticket votes, Judge Brent Gamble received from his overall vote total of 530,480 you come up with 119,826 votes. So, in essence, even if you stripped away the straight-ticket votes received by Judge Dedra Davis back in 2018 she would have still hypothetically unseated the incumbent by approximately 16,205 votes back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.
