Be on the plains one day, embark on a trek of the mighty Kilimanjaro another, and a few days later relax on the beach in Zanzibar! 6 Tips for your Holiday

Fortunately for us, if you’re planning on self-driving South Africa and Namibia, you won’t need to switch sides, because like NZ they drive on the left. The infrastructure is very good, the roads are smooth, well signposted and a pleasure to cruise along. You’ll need a full New Zealand Drivers Licence to hire a car, with most rental companies boasting high quality vehicles and options to suit everyone.

1 / PACKING FOR SAFARI It’s not a fashion statement, or a joke, khaki really will help you blend into the safari landscape. Most animals are not accustomed to bright colours so camouflage helps if you’re hoping to get close to the Big Five.

Furthermore, insects love a strong colour, so stay away from the bright apparel. Citronella soap and/or lotion is a great deterrent, as is a stiff gin and tonic. True story. Mosquitoes detest the quinine found in tonic water - and add the gin, just because.

Game drives always have cold moments, so gloves and beanies are smart items to pack.

You’ll also be thankful for your own pair of binoculars. When the animals aren’t within metres of your truck, you don’t want to be scrambling for binoculars shared between the entire group.

2 / WHEN TO SEE VICTORIA FALLS Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is one of those sights that can take your breath away. The Zambezi River is at its lowest between October and early December, its highest level is between March and May. Low levels will expose more bare rock, high water levels can produce back spray and hazy visibility. Easily combined with a visit to nearby safari locations, the area is also an adventure capital, so you can bungy, go white water rafting or take a scenic helicopter flight.

5 / CUISINE TO TICKLE YOUR TASTE BUDS Meat lovers can’t go wrong with a Boerewors sausage. Also known as the farmer’s sausage, this tasty concoction has a guaranteed 90% meat and a medley of spices, including toasted coriander seeds, black pepper, nutmeg and cloves.

Cooked on a Braai, a South African BBQ using only wood or charcoal briquettes, the flavours are rustic and delicious.

Out on safari watch the sun set with sundowners, followed by a boma dinner back at your lodge where you’ll enjoy fine wine and gourmet food under a starlit sky. If crisp linen and crystal glass is more your thing, Cape Town is awash with impressive menus crafted by top rated chefs.

4 / CAPE TOWN CONSIDERATIONS Travelling to South Africa has never been cheaper. The South African Rand has a great exchange rate making your travelling experiences and all that fine dining and superb shopping in Cape Town even better value. Table Mountain is a must-see, it’s a good idea to visit in the morning, when the views are better and because the wind usually picks up later in the day. The same applies for Robben Island so it’s better to opt for the morning ferries. And if you have time, High Tea at the Mount Nelson is a treat worth indulging in.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round occurrence as the wildebeest are always on the move; motivated by an instinct to seek fresh grazing and water. Your experience will vary depending on what month you visit. The key months are when the great herds of wildebeest cross the Mara River and undertake vast treks across the plains of the Serengeti. Every occasion will bring a different perspective on one of the world’s great natural wonders. The masses begin their move north from Tanzania to Kenya in late June through to July, the river crossings tend to take place from July to November. Then, driven by the rain, they head back to Tanzania sometime in October. Over two million animals migrate between July and October, including 1.7 million wildebeest, as well as zebra and antelope, so there are many moments for that oncein-a-lifetime experience.

There are traditional African bomas which are enclosed outdoor areas that usually boast roaring bonfires, plenty of socialising and nightly entertainment.

UNDER CANVAS

This doesn’t mean staying in a tent, well it does, but it’s a flash tent. ‘Under Canvas’ accommodation refers to a permanent camp, and it’s designed to offer extreme comfort while maintaining the authenticity of staying close to wildlife. It adds a completely different meaning to the word camp. Usually small in size, with between four and 30 tents, you still get your minibar, en suite bathroom, rain shower, electricity and many other creature comforts that vary from camp to camp.

SMALL GROUP TOURING Small group tours usually accommodate between four and 16 guests so it’s a very intimate way to travel. There are more chances to get off the beaten track in groups as small as these and the cultural activities have more of a presence. Highlights worth seeing along the way The Cradle of Humankind – About an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, the Cradle of Humankind is an UNESCO World Heritage-site and one of the world’s most important paleo-anthropological sites. A main attraction is the Sterkfontein stalactitic caves, linking underground chambers with a lake at a depth of approximately 40 metres. Excavations here have unearthed the skull of a humanoid creature known as Australopithecus africanus, estimated to be two million years old. Guided tours of the cave are available, and you should also stop by Maropeng Visitor Centre to view other exhibits.

The Garden Route The Garden Route is a popular coastal self-drive journey along the southern shore of South Africa.

It is better known as the stretch from Cape Town through to Port Elizabeth, and its winding roads take you past numerous stunning beaches. The Garden Route journey includes towns such as Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve. Make sure to stop at incredible Bloukrans Bridge and watch the daredevils bungee off!

5 days/4 nights Suggested Self-Drive Day 1: Cape Town – Winelands (85km) An early departure from Cape Town will give you the best start for the first day of your journey, reaching the Winelands in plenty of time for lunch.

Franschhoek is a heavenly village amongst the Cape Winelands area, and a great overnight stay to base yourself for explorations. Grab yourself a handy Winelands map and get going!

Day 2: Winelands – Knysna (480km) After one last look, set off to reach Hermanus in time for an early lunch, approximately 100 kilometres away. Hermanus is a lovely little seaside town, well known for its visiting whales between July and December, and is well worth taking a peek in the local art galleries. The afternoon drive may be long but is no less scenic as you follow the rolling hills of the Garden Route.

Arrive in Knysna and settle in for a two night stay.

Day 3: Knysna Explore Knysna and its surrounds in your own time, taking in this wonderful town nestled into a lagoon. Known as the oyster capital of South Africa, be sure to try their local delicacy. A must-see is Knysna Heads for a magnificent viewpoint of the Indian Ocean.

Day 4: Knysna – Port Elizabeth (260km) Today’s drive can be broken up by many unique stops along the way.

Plettenberg Bay is a beautiful cliffside holiday destination for locals, and not far from Tsitsikamma Forest where there are some great walking tracks to explore. Arrive in Port Elizabeth in the afternoon for an overnight stay.

Highlights worth seeing along the way The Winelands – The Winelands is a little over an hour away from Cape Town, and boasts over 200 wine cellars, waiting for your visit. Franschhoek is a quaint village known for its French Huguenot Heritage, dotted with awardwinning restaurants and vineyards. The Winelands towns of Stellenbosch and Paarl are also popular stops worth taking.

Hermanus – Hermanus is rich in breath-taking scenery and endless adventure options, with the infamous shark cage diving just a few bays over.

Hermanus attracts visitors for whale watching, where up to 100 whales visit from Antarctica to breed and rear their young, and will even come within 10 metres of the coastline to greet you. Art galleries, shopping and markets also make up the vibrant atmosphere.

Oudtshoorn – Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world, also an area of exceptional contrasts and natural beauty. Visit an ostrich farm to learn about the world’s biggest bird, stand on an ostrich egg without breaking it; how about an ostrich burger or ostrich egg omelette? Oudtshoorn is also home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa’s largest cave system.

Tsitsikamma – A great area of natural adventure, there is something for everyone in Tsitsikamma region. Dare to jump the world’s highest commercial bungy, Bloukrans Bridge sitting at 709 feet high. Kayaking, mountain biking and horse trails are all on offer, but a great place to satisfy your lunch hunger is Fynboshoek Cheese Restaurant.

Jeffreys Bay – Jeffreys Bay is home of the best right hand surf break in the world. International surfers flock to catch the legendary ‘J Bay’ waves.

Experience Botswana Our favourite things to see and do Okavango Delta – The Okavango Delta consists of 15,000sq km of lagoons, channels and islands in northwestern Botswana.

It’s the largest inland delta in the world and is teeming with wildlife. Most obvious are elephant, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, hippo and kudu. In the centre of the Delta, the Moremi wildlife reserve is specifically for wildlife preservation. A great way to see the Delta is by mokoro (dugout canoe), which are generally poled through the waterways by guides. The Delta impresses travellers year-round and with its continual cycle of climate and habitat variation, it is always a good time to be there.

Chobe National Park – Chobe National Park covers 11,000sq km. Kasane, in the north, is the park’s gateway.

Kasane is a good place to base yourself for quick visits to the park, it’s also where you arrive when flying to Chobe. The most popular activity is a cruise or drive along the riverfront, where you have a good chance of spotting elephants (with herds of up to 500), yawning hippos floating by, lion, giraffe, warthog, hyena, crocodile, zebra and plenty of bird species.

The Zambezi Queen Collection – Seen cruising on the great Chobe River, The Zambezi Queen Collection is made up of four elegant houseboats. These floating hotels offer elegance and luxurious comfort, all while enjoying the sights and sounds of the Chobe River and banks.

Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans – The southern area of Botswana, Makgadikgadi Game Reserve, is a 4,000sq km tract of pans, grasslands and beautiful savannah. There are antelope, lion, hyena, cheetah, and hippo, as well as a stunning array of birds, but no elephant or buffalo. The northern part of the park, Nxai Pan, takes in another 4,000sq km. The southern part is a complex of mini salt pans. This is one of the few areas in Botswana that is more interesting during the rainy season – when huge herds hit Nxai’s grassy pans, the extent of wildlife can be staggering.

Day 1: Windhoek – Swakopmund Depart Windhoek in the morning and travel to Swakopmund. On arrival check into your hotel and enjoy the seaside promenades.

Day 1: Windhoek – Kalahari Desert Travel into the largest sand mass on earth, the Kalahari Desert. Observe the fauna and flora that have survived in this exceptionally dry desert environment.

Day 1: Windhoek – Sossusvlei Depart Windhoek and drive southwest towards the Namib Desert, stopping for a scenic picnic lunch along the way.

Day 2: Swakopmund Swakopmund has a relaxed pace and is also perfect for a wide range of adventures. We recommend doing the seal and dolphin cruise (additional cost) to check out the cape fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and flamingos!

Day 3: Damaraland Heading north, travel to geologically diverse Damaraland and visit Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO heritage-site featuring over 2500 ancient rock art engravings. In this harsh rocky environment visit the Petrified Forest and visit a traditional Damara village.

Day 4: Damaraland – Etosha National Park After a relaxed breakfast travel to your camp just outside the park famous for its wildlife and enjoy a guided safari.

Day 5-6: Etosha National Park These days are devoted purely to witnessing wildlife found in the world-renowned Etosha National Park. Focusing mainly around waterholes where wildlife gathers you may encounter four of the Big Five, as well as rare wildlife species not seen anywhere else in the world.

Day 7: Etosha National Park – Windhoek After breakfast en-route to Windhoek stop at the woodcarvers’ market in Okahandja. Arrive at Windhoek in the late afternoon where your tour ends.

Day 2: Fish River Canyon Head towards Fish River Canyon via Garas quiver tree forest, with bizarre scrap metal sculptures and huge stacked boulders known as the Giant’s Playground. Arrive at your lodge, then explore the area by foot or safari vehicle.

Day 3-4: Luderitz Travel to the coastal town of Luderitz with the chance to see wild horses of the Namib Desert on the way. Visit Kolmanskop ghost town and take a stop at Diaz Point overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 5-6: Namib Desert The next two days are spent in the Namib Desert. Witness the amazing red tones of Sossusvlei, this is a treat for photographers!

Follow up with a visit to Sesriem Canyon.

Day 7-8: Swakopmund Drive to Kuiseb Moon Valley then Walvis Bay, known for its rich marine life, before arriving in Swakopmund for 2 nights. Visit the shallow lagoon on the way, home to thousands of flamingos. Then spend the days at leisure to enjoy this seaside town full of cafés, shops and a wide choice of adventures such as sandboarding, quad biking and skydiving.

Day 9: Swakopmund – Windhoek Return to Windhoek where your tour ends.

Day 2: Sossusvlei Rise early for a magical excursion in the Namib Naukluft National Park, capturing the dunes while the light is soft.

Day 3: Sossusvlei – Swakopmund Drive northwest through the desert landscapes of Namib Naukluft National Park. Cruise through Walvis Bay, then north to Swakopmund.

Day 4: Swakopmund Challenge yourself to a kayaking adventure at Walvis Bay, or sit back and relax on a scenic boat cruise.

Day 5: Swakopmund – Damaraland Pass Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg, before entering Damaraland.

Day 6: Damaraland Damaraland is home to a variety of desert adapted wildlife and hidden desert treasures.

Go on an exciting 4WD drive through the Aba Huab and Huab River valleys.

Day 7: Southern Etosha National Park Set off to Etosha National Park via the scenic Grootberg Pass. Visit a local Himba settlement, they are one of the last truly traditional people of Namibia.

Day 8-9: Etosha National Park View sensational landscapes and wildlife of Etosha National Park, including Onguma Game Reserve.

What really draws the tourists to come here is the great outdoors. Kenya is the heart of safari country and a visit to its spectacular parks and reserves is a lifetime memorable experience, especially during the period of the Great Wildebeest Migration. In fact, the word ‘safari’ is Swahili for what we know as journey. Swahili is an original East African native language, and arguably one of the most soothing on the ears.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is the most popular game park in Kenya. This 320sq km reserve is teeming with wildlife and covers a vast chunk of the Serengeti. Between July and October, the Great Wildebeest Migration is an enthralling event for travellers to flock from all over the world. The migration of over 2 million animals have to cross the Mara River at some point, which is crowded with hungry crocodiles. Timing is everything in order to view this spectacle!

The Kenyan scenery is fabulous – from the indigo sea and white sand beaches of Malindi to the grey-green rolling bushveld of Tsavo and Amboseli. The rippling golden grasslands of the Masai Mara contrast with the great Rift Valley and desolate volcanic wastelands around northern Lake Turkana. For the more energetic, Kenya has some excellent mountains to climb, Mt Kenya being one of the most challenging, and rewarding.

With an ongoing threat of elephant and rhino poaching in Africa, the inspiration to help this Trust reach their goal is becoming increasingly important. Anyone in the world can now foster an elephant at the Trust for a small annual cost, helping to rehabilitate these precious creatures to their natural habitat. Doors are open for only 1 hour a day, so be sure to book your visit before arriving.

Amboseli National Park – At 392sq km, Amboseli is full of elephant in huge herds. One of the highlights is seeing them cross the grassy plains with Tanzania’s Mt Kilimanjaro sitting proudly in the background. You can see a large variety of wildlife here. Most visitors approach Amboseli through Namanga, the main border post between Kenya and Tanzania.

Masai village visit – There is no better way to learn about culture of the locals than to spend quality time with them, and in their homestead. Get to know their culture and customs on a visit to the traditional Masai village, the local primary school or the busy market day. Experience how the Masai people live in the middle of the bush with zebra grazing and lions roaring just outside their homes. For many, special memories of a Masai visit will last the rest of a lifetime.

Kenyan Beaches – Kenyan beaches make an excellent ending to any Kenya safari. Pick a beach anywhere north of Mombasa and you can expect brilliant blue seas lapping against fine white sands. The coast is lined with coral reefs, making for excellent snorkelling, diving and watersports.

Ngorongoro Crater – The views from the rim of Ngorongoro Crater are spectacular, but you need to descend to its 20 kilometre wide floor to see all the wildlife you desire, as well as thousands of flamingo wading in the shallows of Lake Magadi.

Mt Kilimanjaro National Park – Mt Kilimanjaro is one of Africa’s magnificent sights, and at 5,895 metres, it is the highest peak on the African continent. The mountain rises through lush rainforests, alpine meadows and finally across a barren lunar landscape to the snow-capped twin summits. If you plan to climb to the summit, it is advised that you take an organised trek along one of the many trail options.

Uganda has had a rather turbulent past, but has now become a more peaceful

country. It is home to many different ethnic groups, yet none of these form the majority of Uganda’s population. Around 40 languages are currently used, English being the official language. Kibale Forest is where chimpanzees have made their home, and you can hear their evocative pant-hoot call any time of the day. Head to Ngamba Island (45 minutes boat from Entebbe), where most of the chimps who were previously confiscated by poachers, now live free and happy.

Neighbouring Uganda is Rwanda, small in size but a population density among the highest in Africa. Appropriately dubbed “The Land of a Thousand Hills” Rwanda is predominantly grassy highlands and hills, with altitudes varying from a low of 1207 metres, to Mt. Karisimbi, the highest of a range of extinct volcanoes in the northwest reaching 4507 metres. Lake Kivu forms part of the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa.

Rainy season is aplenty between March to May, bringing to life the tropical rainforest of the highlands. Gorillas can be visited all year round, but great savings can be made in the rainy seasons when trekking permits are more affordable.

The star attraction of course is the legendary mountain gorilla, the biggest of living primates. Trek through this breath-taking part of the world to discover the gorilla’s home. Please read these booking conditions carefully CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACT The guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes.

OUR SERVICES AND OBLIGATIONS 1.1 House of Travel Ltd (‘we” or “us” as the case may be) supply services consisting of arranging and co-ordinating travel facilities and services, and making bookings and issuing vouchers to be redeemed by suppliers of travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services (“Suppliers”). 1.2 We undertake to perform these services with reasonable care and skill. We will not be liable for any loss or damage which results from the act, default or omission of any person other than ourselves, our employees or agents, or any cause independent of human control. • The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier.

• Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier.

• All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier.

• We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you.

9. RESERVATION AMENDMENTS We are happy to incorporate any reasonable amendments you request. An amendment constitutes a change to an existing booking and will attract a $25 fee per amendment prior to final payment and the issuing of the travel documents, and a $50 fee per amendment after travel documents have been issued. These fees are to cover administration and communication costs. You may also be required to pay any Supplier imposed fees.

10. INSURANCE We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation, loss of luggage and personal property, and medical expenses. Your travel agent will be able to provide you with further information.

11. ITEMS NOT COVERED Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included.

Prices for cruises are per person for the complete cruise based on the lead-in cabin category on a low season sailing.

For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information.

5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us.

5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure.

6. HOUSE OF TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION RATINGS To assist you with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. Please note that these gradings are to be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. When selecting your accommodation please note that the overall quality of properties in Africa is generally lower than equivalent priced properties in other countries, particularly in the lower ratings. In general the room sizes are quite small and can vary, even within one property. Please check with your House of Travel consultant to ensure you get the property that best suits your needs.

7. PAYMENT 7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers.

7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure.

7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets).

8. CANCELLATION 8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible.

8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent. Cancellation fees imposed

by Suppliers and travel agents are beyond our control and you should check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable.

13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier.

14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent.

15. SERVICE SATISFACTION During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. Your contract for each service is with the Supplier. If this is not possible immediately, or if you are still dissatisfied, please contact your travel agent. Both we and your travel agent will endeavour to investigate on your behalf and to negotiate with the Supplier to resolve the matter as soon as possible, so that you continue to enjoy your journey.

16. LEGAL CLAIMS Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any claim or legal action against the Suppliers is likely to be subject to the terms of your contract with them, and may be governed by the laws of other countries.
