“Daylesford, the Traditional Land of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, is known as the rainbow capital of regional Victoria. It’s also home to ChillOut Festival, one of the longest-running events celebrating regional LGBTQIA+ pride,” the Tinder site says.

Daylesford is one of four finalists for Tinder’s Big Rainbow, the first big landmark celebrating regional LGBTQIA+ pride and inclusion. After thousands of submissions and from more than 50 regional towns suggested, the final towns are Daylesford, Hay, Broome and Katherine.

Voting closed on June 30 with the Big Rainbow website asking people to: “Stay tuned for more news on the final announcement later this year!”. Link: www.bigrainbowproject.com.au Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 260

More than 50 people attended a snap rally in Gisborne in July, called by the Wombat Action Group to voice their concerns about the VicForests’ salvage logging in the Wombat State Forest.

7 NewsThe Little Local - thelittlelocal.com.au

Members of Landcare and Friends groups, Wombat Forestcare members and the Sybil Disobedients rallied to demand that the Victorian Government cease “the environmentally destructive salvage logging” in the Wombat State Forest and legislate the promised Wombat-Lerderderg National Park. The rally moved to the office of Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas to deliver a letter of demand. Wombat Forestcare president Gayle Osborne said in 2021 the Victorian Government undertook to create a new Wombat-Lerderderg National Park but instead they authorised a “log grab” by VicForests. “This operation has seen hectares of forest cleared for machinery and log storage, wide tracks carved through the forest and heaps of inflammable branches and bark created.” Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 258

“I remember dancing with my nan and mum at home, my sister and I would put on performances that we would copy from ballet dances and I enjoyed it so much I started classes and knew it was what I wanted to do when I was older,” she said. Jasmine began her training at Starz Dance Centre in Kyneton, taking on ballet, contemporary and jazz. It wasn’t long before she started competing in solo competitions under the watchful and encouraging eye of her dance teacher. “My biggest inspiration was my first teacher Miss Laura; she was fantastic and provided me with so many opportunities. I looked up to her so much and I’m still in contact with her to this day.” At 16, Jasmine has accomplished a great deal including training with Ballet Theatre Australia and completing her Australian Teachers of Dancing exams. From a young age, Daylesford’s Jasmine Gruar knew she wanted to be a ballet dancer. Her memories of dancing with her sister at home cemented her love of dance.

Curry Punk and Jelly Brain. Sound like punk rockers? They’re mushrooms. The first is a native Australian that grows on dead eucalypts and is pretty widely spread through the region. Up close it smells curry-like or of fenugreek. Jelly Brain, a beautiful jelly fungus grows on old logs, appears in many forms and shapes but usually in lovely overlapping lobes and looks amazing with light filtering through it. These insights are from Alison Pouliot, a natural historian and environmental photographer, who moves between Central Victoria and Switzerland teaching all things mushroom. To her, fungi provide architecture in soil, recycle organic matter, mediate energy cycles, filter water, transmit nutrients and connect ecosystems. “They’re not just lying around in the bush. Without fungi, organic matter wouldn’t be recycled, plants couldn’t access nutrients and water as efficiently...ecosystems would essentially flounder.”

On Sunday morning, June 5, (Pentecost Sunday), Father Jeff O’Hare, left, and Terry Langevin were married by the Anglican Bishop of Ontario, the Right Reverend Michael Oulton, in front of Father Jeff’s congregation of Christ Church Belleville.

Fr Jeff, who was formerly with Christ Church, Daylesford, said there were 140 parishioners, members of the wider community, friends, family and the Mayor of Belleville “at this wonderful celebration and historic event”. “Same sex marriage in the Anglican diocese of Ontario has been approved of since 2019, and this is the first taken by the bishop of one of his own clergy.” Terry’s two sons, Shae and Sammy, and Fr Jeff’s brother, Shane, all played ‘best men’ at the ceremony. Also in attendance was 14-year-old pooch Atticus, who made the move from Daylesford to Canada with Fr Jeff. “It was a wonderful day,” Fr Jeff said.

“I remember being in grade three and we were doing art. Next thing my work was being shown to the class and to the other teachers. I had faithfully reproduced a scene of poplars and a stream which hung on the wall. I made pots with the clay on the dam banks, jewellery at an early age buying copper from the local plumber, using Dad’s anvil and my grandfather’s plenishing hammer to make rings and bracelets. There was a reverence of my drawings as they were pegged up in their lounge room.” Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 258

Alison Parkinson was raised in a farming family and had all the space in the world to explore in the Warracknabeal district where “the lands are flat with the biggest skies”. Her creative mother always had a project on the kitchen table, teaching her three children how to sew, cook and garden, and the watching of satellites in the night sky, naming the constellations, inspiring them in the ways of beauty and how to question. Alison’s father worked the land, instilling in her, her sister and brother, an amazing work ethic.

ChillOut has unveiled its theme for 2023 – Find Your Wings. Festival director Emma Ireland said the theme came from the discovery of the bright-eyed brown butterfly at the Grove of Gratitude at Wombat Flat, Lake Daylesford. The grove was an initiative of the 2021 ChillOut organisers with 100 trees and shrubs planted and dedicated by LGBTQIA+ groups to those who have made a difference in their organisations and communities. Ms Ireland, pictured right above, said the butterfly, long thought to be extinct in the area, had recently been rediscovered. “So it was partly from that, and also because we are all coming out of our Covid chrysalis and finding our wings. It is a really lovely theme, and we are excited to have the wheels rolling again and to start working towards the festival.” Ms Ireland said next year there would be more events outside - “bigger, safer events” - and also more smaller events, which she calls “little pockets of joy”. The 2023 program will be out by November. Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 260

OK, so it’s not really a secret but there are places around the Central Highlands which just scream out “take a photo” and this scene near Clunes is one of them. It’s the canola that makes it pop and it’s not an all year round thing. So grab your camera, well probably just your iPhone, and head off for a drive. We had this photo turned into wallpaper - and it’s stunning!

Clancy, who now lives at Mt Tarrengower and performed recently at The Convent in Daylesford, said it was a magical start to life and gave him a deep love and connection with the natural world which he channels through his music. “It all started because my dad was an amateur mandolin player and no one would play with him. So I said I would and lucky me, I got a guitar for Christmas when I was 10. I love performing and I’ve got so much to share so I’m hoping that the stars will align and I’ll be able to keep doing this all the time for years to come. Right now I’ve hoisted the sails with the 13-concert series I’m doing across Victoria and all I can do is hope that the wind blows!” Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 260

Classical guitarist Clancy McLeod grew up in Alice Springs and moved down to Victoria when he was 15. He spent quite a few years of his childhood travelling through the desert with camels and a wagon - the family were cameleers.
