It’s a job many would envy and Creswick Woollen Mills’ Farmer Maddy says it’s one she’s not about to swap for a desk any day soon.

Maddy Viola - also known as Farmer Maddy when she’s at work - is one of two farmers at the Creswick Woollen Mills’ onsite demo farm, the other being local resident, Lyn Wozny, who is also a shearer. Besides tending to all the basic needs and creature comforts of their four-hooved charges, Maddy’s and Lyn’s job is to talk all day long about one of their all-time favourite topics – the critters in their care. “It’s fun. I get to hang out with the animals all day and provide information about them - their names, their ages, their breeds,” Maddy, pictured with rare Valais Blacknose lamb Timmy, says. “It makes a lot of people happy, especially kids.” Creswick Woollen Mills, famed for its beautiful fibre products including fine alpaca and merino fleece luxury items, has been operating at Creswick for over 75 years, and now an important tourism drawcard.

Rose Wilson’s prodigious artistic talent for creating captivating portraiture has seen her make the finals of some of the nation’s most prestigious arts awards including the Archibald Prize.

This acclaimed Trentham artist is also renowned for her impressionistic paintings paying homage to the natural environment and to the living creatures that inhabit it. “As a child I drew a lot, no different from most kids my age. But when I started getting paid with icy poles and vanilla slices for drawing other kids’ school projects I knew I was on to something. My fascination with the face and eyes started early as well. I was an average student so I’d doodle faces and eyes all the time, especially during school. Unfortunately my passion for drawing was inhibited during high school and the thought of being an artist was a distant fantasy. I did what everyone else did back then, finish school and get a job.”

The Integrate Fitness Kettlebell Team, aka the Daylesford Swingers, headed to Brisbane for the 2023 GSAA Australian National Kettlebell Championships held in September.

Coach and competitor Beth Whiting said it was a great weekend. “The Integrate ladies - Shirlene Nevill, Melissa Ryan, Sue King and myself, lifted our hearts out and produced some amazing results, many personal bests. As a coach I have loved watching these ladies grow into incredible lifters.” Shirlene competed in the One Arm Jerk - 12kg - 174 repetitions and the Military Snatch - 12kg - 200 reps. Melissa competed in the Military Snatch - 18kg - 227 reps - Rank 1. Sue competed in the One Arm Long Cycle - 10kg - 131 reps - Rank 3 and the Military Snatch 14kg - 202 reps. Beth competed in the Biathlon - 16kg - 298 points (Jerk 82 reps/snatch 134 reps) - Rank 1 and the One Arm Long Cycle - 30 minute half marathon - 20kg - 291 reps - Candidate Master of Sport.

Beth also won Lifter of the Year Award - Open Women’s category.

The early development of Australia from its roads to farms would hardly have been possible without the contribution of heavy horses.

They were the trucks and tractors in the time before mechanisation took over, and the most well known of these hard working creatures was the Clydesdale. And despite their size they are considered one of the most docile of horse breeds, with a kind temperament. However, compared to other breeds such as stock horses or thoroughbreds which are foaled in the hundreds every year, there are comparatively few Clydesdales. Their numbers plummeted after WWI and while there has been a resurgence over the last few decades, there are less than 3000 registered animals in Australia and maybe 10,000 worldwide. With such a small gene pool, as a breed they were once considered vulnerable to extinction. But that is not going to happen anytime soon thanks to the work of horse people such as Matthew and Jaimie Thompson, pictured with son Hunter, of Sandy Creek Clydesdales outside of Maldon.

Renowned for his photographic landscape studies and creation of gaze-grabbing images in the commercial realm, acclaimed Hepburn-based photographer David Rosendale enjoys an ongoing love-affair with light and its transformative role in image-making.

“My first (photography) connection was in primary school in Melbourne. My parents had a bookshelf completely devoted to National Geographic magazines. I would sift through the photo essays and current affairs. I remember being amazed by the photography of the volcano eruption of Mt St Helens and the Challenger space shuttle in the early 80s. Capturing these epic moments in time. There were always incredible photographs and there were always these brilliant advertising campaigns

by Canon, Nikon and Minolta in Nat Geo. I became fascinated by the potential of the camera and the medium itself. To be able to capture a moment. In grade six I purchased my first camera.”

Long-established artist and observing Jew, Daylesford’s Bill Meyer can name a multitude of diverse career highlights.

They range from a painting commission for the Werdiger family, and their patronage over many years to having works included in the Hirsh collection and incorporated in multiple public collections. Further highlights include a touring exhibition of prints and drawings called Gapscape which, in the 80s, was shown in 26 state, regional and national galleries nationwide. Today, while now in his 80s, this gifted local remains busy with digital arts and music. “Art writers have described my work variously as related to German Expressionism, to lyrical abstract expressionism, to heavy metal girders rather than petit-point...I prefer to think of my visual work as landscape-in-metaphor. There was never any real alternative (to art). I attended night classes in life drawing for several years until graduating from university.”

Clunes-based artist Kate Edwards is especially renowned for her whimsical, personality-packed ceramic pieces.

Her talents have seen her work selected multiple times among the finalists in the Clunes Ceramics Award. Kate shares her passion for art by teaching at a local secondary college and her work has won this talented creative plenty of fans who love the joyful nature of her original creations. “I love the elemental process of ceramics but also bright colours and patterns. My ceramic sculptures and mosaics reflect this. Last year I returned to study to support my daughter and started painting as well.” Kate said she came to art as a child of the 1970s growing up in the outer east of Melbourne, when handcrafting was very popular. “My mother sometimes wove the fabric to make my clothes and I was a dab hand at macramé. Childhood mud pies developed into pottery and then into ceramic sculpture.”

TAC L2P program is partly funded by TAC and supported locally to enable young people aged between 16 and 21 years, sometimes up to 23 years, who do not have access for suitable adult supervising drivers or access to a car in their personal circles.

If you are a young person who meets the criteria to join and benefit from the program, reach us to find out how to apply for the program.

As we recognise the increase in need in the community, we are currently looking for more volunteers to come onboard and help young people gain necessary driving skills.

For those who are interested to join as volunteers and support the young learner driver the requirements are to have full Victorian Driver’s Licence, have or be willing to apply for Working with Children Check and National Police check, able to complete L2P mentor training and have capacity to spare 2-3 hours per week for driving in the L2P fleet car with the young person. If Tony Kelly didn’t exist, someone possibly would invent him.

From being a park ranger in the NT, he has worked with young people at risk (including at the notorious Malmsbury centre), retrained as a lawyer, and is a CEO, writer and author.

All this sounds remarkable, but considering his background it may have been almost expected. He is the grandson of opera singer Count Ercole Tonti Filippini. Born in Argentina in 1885, Filippini was signed to the La Scala opera house in Milan but when theatres shut in Europe during WWI he joined an opera company to tour India, China and the Philippines, then Australia and New Zealand. Filippini stayed in Australia, opening a school of opera in Sydney in 1918. He married one of the students, Anne McParland (later known as Nancy). Little wonder, then, as Tony, pictured with wife Rebecca Lister, says, there has been a lot of talk regarding a film about his grandparents. The musical tradition is being carried on by his brother, Australian rock legend Paul Kelly.

The considerable artistry of Kyneton sculptor Anne Anderson has seen her work recognised with multiple high-profile arts awards including the most recent Toorak Village Sculpture Prize.

For this busy professional creative the schedule ahead includes exhibiting at McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery in Langwarrin in January and at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in March. Anne works from a studio space “that is just a short bike ride from my home in Kyneton”, sharing it with husband Chris, who is a proficient blacksmith and welder.” Anne said while she came from a family of academics and sportspeople she had always felt called to the performing and visual arts. “I never sought to be an artist, yet somehow art and artistic ventures always found their way to me. I think that my artistic style would be best described as unpredictable. I have an obsession with sculpting human faces. My pieces are mostly figurative, be they realistic, surreal or contemporary.”

It’s a sterling spring day as we set off to walk the nine kilometre Wombat Trail that sets out from Trentham’s pretty little Quarry Street Reserve.

While this little ripper of a walk starts in the township itself, crossing High Street and entering the Stony Creek Reserve, and then meandering through lifestyle property land, it doesn’t take too long before you’re in the forest with plenty of impressive eucalypts for company. Located at the edge of the Wombat State Forest, this loop walk is both flat and well signposted and we soon reach the historic Trentham Cemetery. Leaving the cemetery behind, there’s a short section of trail ahead before we cross the Trentham-Blackwood Road, after which we enter the forest. Crossing the road, we enter the forested section of the walk and soon find fresh evidence of the trail’s namesake animal in residence. From here the trail offers a good bushland experience and further on ahead, the historic site of the former 1800s Trentham Racecourse - unused since 1907.

It was established in 1866 as the Blanket Flat Cemetery and in recent years, according to trust chairperson Loris Duclos, Eganstown General Cemetery has “really kicked some goals”.

The first project was building a crematorium wall so the cemetery can now take ashes. The project was funded by the Department of Health and trust savings, and built by local contractor Shane Moiler. “Shane did a fantastic job for us and we have got our first ashes in the wall which is very exciting for our beautiful old cemetery,” Loris says. “I love being a part of the lineage of locals and a part of the history and those people who have done a lot of research to put names to people who might be there, based on newspapers and research at the (Daylesford) museum.”

Loris said the cemetery was just a few kilometres up Cemetery Road “and is a beautiful peaceful bush cemetery - it just gives that feel of a quiet bush place where you can contemplate away from the traffic”.
