Creswick’s triple threat performer Maureen Andrew was one of the stars of Channel 7’s four-night production of The Voice Generations which ran from Monday, January 31.

Maureen said she was invited to participate. “That was a great honour.

“The total drive for me was to celebrate those of us who are over 40. We are all bloody amazing and deserve to be heard, seen, respected, working, creating, for as long as we darn well need to. No, I am not saving up for that age-reducing pill, only when I look in the mirror with my glasses on.” Maureen said it was wonderful to see families, father and daughter, older and younger, sharing their music together. “That’s how I grew up and that’s what the world needs to enjoy again. The lovely Crystal Hegedis was my partner in crime. About half my age, so bless her for agreeing to join me in this crazy adventure.” Maureen has spent her life in the arts with more than 30 musicals under her belt and writes, produces, directs and performs her own productions.

The Local, usually just in print and online, has now also appeared in oils.

Occasional editorial contributor Peter Young says he slammed out his painting Reading The Local, after the bright colour combination of his wife Sal’s blue homeknit, the reds and greens of Trentham cafe, Chaplin’s, and the white of the newspaper pages, caught his eye.

The image was used to illustrate his latest Trentham Trumpet column, Sketchy Musings. “The column discusses the importance of The Local and trustworthy local news in this day and age of fake news and toxic tabloid print and electronic media commentators.” Peter said. Around 18 months ago Dolly Adamson and her family moved into a century-old house in Kyneton. Not long after that the weirdness commenced, the shadows flickering in the corners, the creaks, the groans.

“When we moved in I had doors slamming on me and some strange things happen,” says Dolly. “I didn’t feel like we were welcome in the house and I never felt like that before. But I do think the house started me on my spooky little path.” That spooky little path was the development of Kyneton Paranormal and her new career as a paranormal investigator. She connected up with Psychic Bec, a medium from the area and began with three gatherings at the Kyneton Museum last May. Psychic Bec led a group seance and Dolly occupied another room with equipment designed to detect the presence of any disembodied entities that may arise.

Question: What do poet Banjo Paterson, singer Simon McDonald of Springmount, photographer Daisy Harriett Llewelyn and the people of Creswick have in common?

Answer: They are all the subject of shows being presented at the inaugural CresFest, running across the first weekend of April, and bringing a new theatrical element to the music and dance festival that has been in the planning for over a year. These shows are presented by actor Marg Dobson, poet Megan J Riedl, Creswick local Neil Adam and Celtic music legend Felix Meagher. Poet Riedl will present her show I Know What Creswick Did Last Lockdown - a participatory pandemic poetry project created especially for CresFest 2022. Riedl said that the project “invites people who have experienced lockdowns due to Covid-19 to share their experiences – positive, negative and neutral – by way of an anonymous confession – a kind of creative therapy, if you will”.

Chillin’ tunes There are plenty of cool places to kick back and listen to some tunes in the Central Highlands.

Music at The Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville starts on Friday nights and continues through to Sunday afternoons. There’s a mix of blues, country, covers and everything in-between.

Live music is a staple for the weekends at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Trentham - and they have some awesome artists exhibiting.

And the Palais-Hepburn has loads of great live music in a beautiful setting.

Those are the humble words of Hepburn Shire’s 2022 Citizen of the Year Danny Moynihan, who has spent the past 37 years helping improve the lives of others through countless volunteer roles with more than 24 organisations. At the January 25 Community Awards and Civic Ceremony, Mayor Tim Drylie described Danny, as a “quiet achiever”.

“Once he makes a commitment to be involved in a community cause or project he is there for the long haul.” Danny moved to Daylesford with his wife, the late Roz Moynihan and their two young children, Justin, then six, and Natalie, then three, in 1984. Best vanilla slice award? How many hundreds of bakeries lay claim to that prize. But there is a new prize in town for the cafés and pubs of the Macedon Ranges, The Edgy Veg award.

Veg Action, an initiative of the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group is running the award and Edgy Veg coordinator Lucy Campbell, pictured left, with project leader Claire Rowland, said one venue would be wearing the crown for the best plant-based dish, as voted by the customers. “Around 20 of the most innovative and creative cafes and pubs in the Macedon Ranges will take part, and customers will get to comment and vote on the featured dishes over the Autumn Festival from March 25 to April 26.” All the dishes are on The Edgy Veg Trail, a map showing where to sample plant-based food in the Macedon Ranges during the Autumn Festival. Today Glenlyon, lying a short drive east from Daylesford, is a prosperous little town. Many visitors enjoy stopping there and its current population of weekenders, hobby farmers and retirees is growing in number.

New subdivisions are appearing and most days the sound of building activity can be heard as new houses are constructed. Some older residents may view all these new developments with dismay, yearning for the days of previous years when the area around Glenlyon seemed to enjoy a certain degree of obscurity. But the current expansion of the town is really just another phase in its 170-year colonial history. Its location on a busy road connecting the main route from Bendigo to Melbourne ensured the town’s growth and consolidation well after gold petered out and this same location continues to be what attracts people to the area.

Glenlyon is a place destined to grow and grow.

Maria Viola has made the difficult decision to sell the Old Macaroni Factory in Hepburn Springs. The building has been in the family since it was built in 1859.

Italian political refugee, Pietro Lucini, arrived in the colony in1854 and established Australia’s first macaroni manufacturing business. But he soon shut up shop and headed to Ballarat in search of gold, finally settling in Hepburn Springs. In 1859 he was joined by his brother Giacamo and his wife Rosa and together the brothers constructed the building as a macaroni factory and living quarters. Giacomo was Maria’s great grandfather. After the brothers died, Giacamo’s son Cosmo expanded the business selling packaged pasta all over Australia. The manufacture of macaroni ceased prior to Cosmo’s death in 1941. The building passed down through the generations finally reaching Maria, sadly in a derelict state. Family and friends helped return the building to its former glory and Maria opened Lucini’s Historic Pasta Cafe in 2003.

If you’ve ever visited the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens glasshouse, you will have seen the amazing tuberous begonias, flamboyant, colourful and huge - but only viewed from behind the glass walls.

Now they are easily accessible with Jesse and Peter from the Tuberous Begonia Garden showing and selling these amazing plants and hanging baskets every weekend until Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8. Also on show and sale are the old fashioned fuchsias – you may remember them from your nan’s garden – now riding a wave of popularity. Jesse said both tuberous begonias and fuchsias were shade-loving plants and so went hand-in-hand for showing and sales. “We have a large shade house and one side is where people can come and look at our plants and the other is where they can buy them if they want. They will flower from now until past Mother’s Day and make the most wonderful and unique presents.

After that they die back to tubers and the following year they will come back again.”

The controversial Hepburn Hub at The Rex project has been scrapped.

Hepburn Shire Council voted to sell the Vincent Street, Daylesford former theatre at its November 23 meeting. The council bought the building in 2016 for $6 million. It has since spent $3 million on the building which was to house a cinema, staff offices, a library and public toilets, with another $6 million needed to complete the project. Council officers had recommended that the council continue with the project.

The decision has been met with disbelief and anger by many people including the Daylesford Cinema committee and volunteers, who have asked council to revisit its decision. Newly elected mayor Cr Tim Drylie said councillors realised the decision would “result in mixed feelings across our community”.
