I love this time of year! Even before my family moved to Boone a little more than a year ago, many of our prior trips here as tourists were to enjoy the early fall season. As the weather begins to cool, the leaves begin to change color, and our favorite college football teams start their seasons, this is by far my favorite time of year in the High Country! Hound Ears Club also has plenty to offer our Members through the fall, from Member events in the Clubhouse to perfect conditions for golf, tennis, pickleball, hiking, and fishing. Please check the events calendar for our various departments located throughout this newsletter.
Now is also a time of year where we are focused on gathering Member feedback to help guide our decision-making. Of course, we collect and utilize Member feedback all year long, but I make mention of it now because of the recent launch of our Membership survey through Club Benchmarking.
Club Benchmarking is a third-party data analysis firm that specializes in private clubs. We use Club Benchmarking for this Membership survey to provide concise reporting of the information they collect, and to ensure confidentiality among our responding Members. We also use them to simultaneously conduct our employee surveys for the same reasons. We provide Club Benchmarking with our email lists, and they send the surveys it to our Members and employees. The Membership survey was originally sent on August 21st and, if you have yet to complete it, you’ve likely received
reminder emails from the same address: clubbenchmarking@qumailserver.com
You may wish to search your spam folders or deleted items for that email address if you don’t have the survey in your inbox. Both spouses from each Membership account should have received an email, and we encourage both spouses to complete the survey separately. If you have not received an email, please contact our Club Benchmarking project Coordinator, Mike Morin, at surveys@clubbenchmarking.com
Another useful feedback tool was launched at the beginning of the 2024 season in the form of QR codes located at each amenity area of the Club. These codes allow our Members to scan and send immediate feedback on their experiences in only a few minutes. As of this writing, we’ve received 220 submissions this year from the QR codes, coming from every area of the club, with an average experience rating of 4.77 out of a possible 5. While I consider these great results, I’m even prouder of how the occasional “less than perfect” rating has allowed us to react in real time. On a few occasions this summer, a comment from the QR code has allowed us to respond to a mistake we’ve made within minutes, which has prevented other Members from having the same experience. That’s the true benefit of these real-time comments from our Membership.
In closing, we’re asking our Members to provide us quite a bit of guidance in the coming weeks. Please complete your proxies and ballots for the Board election and annual Membership meeting prior to September 21st, please complete your Membership surveys by September 20th, please attend one of the five scheduled Membership Forums presented by the Finance Committee, and please keep scanning those QR codes! I remain grateful for our Members’ feedback, and for their passion for Hound Ears.
Go Mountaineers! -- Joe
Motion from Hound Ears Board of Directors: “Ask the Members to vote to raise the Membership Cap by 50, with a maximum of 20 in the first year and, at the Board’s discretion, and additional 10 each year thereafter until the cap reaches 405.” As part of this proposal, the Club would accept no more than 20 new Members in the first year (2025). In subsequent years, the Club’s Board of Directors would have discretion to accept 10 additional Equity Members per year until the new Membership Cap of 405 is attained.
The Hound Ears Club Finance Committee has been very active and productive in 2024. Our club continues to stand on good financial footing. It is anticipated that Hound Ears Club will end 2024 with approximately $4,500,000 in reserves of which $2,750,000 is set aside for the April 2026 purchase of the property along Highway 105 which was approved by our Membership and entered under contract in April 2022. Below I have outlined the Finance Committee’s 2024 projects and recommendations presented to the Hound Ears Board.
At the beginning of 2024 the Finance Committee initiated four projects to establish a firm going forward basis for Hound Ears Club’s future financial decisions. Those four projects consisted of reviewing our Operating Revenues and Expenses, a high-level view of future Capital Project Expenditures, an analysis of Hound Ears Initiation Fees and Dues vs. other high-country clubs, and an analysis of Member utilization of club golfing and dining amenities as it relates to a possible Membership Cap increase.
These projects yielded the following observations:
1. Our two most highly ranked amenities, golf and dining, have the capacity to accommodate higher Member utilization.
2. Hound Ears current initiation fee of $55,000 is below industry recommended benchmarks and the lowest among the local high-country clubs. Therefore, the initiation fee should be increased.
3. From a high-level view there are several future Deferred and Aspirational Capital Projects for the club to explore and prioritize.
4. Moving forward, operationally, industry best practices recommend we remove initiation fees as a source of funding for the annual operation of the club and allocate those funds properly toward Deferred and Aspirational Capital Projects. In addition, Operating Dues need to be reconciled to account for new amenities such as, but not limited to the Fitness Center, Fishing and Pickleball. We also need to reconcile for lost revenue due to a change in rental income received due to the recent rental policy change and Property Services reduced services offerings.
Through this analysis, the Hound Ears Club Board of Directors unanimously acted upon the Finance Committee’s unanimous recommendation to request approval of our Membership to increase Hound Ears’ Membership from 355 Members to 405 Members. This change in our Membership requires your approval as a Member, per Hound Ears Club By-Laws. In making this recommendation these were the primary factors considered:
1. Membership experience and satisfaction in our golf amenity: In this analysis the goal was to determine if excess capacity existed in our golf amenity. Current data shows that during peak golfing times, Thursday – Sunday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and during a peak golf month, July 2024, 43% of our tee-times were unused. June 2024 shows 56% of tee times unused and August of 2023 shows 64% of tee-times unused. It’s also important to note that of our 355 members, 214 (60%) are golf members.
2. Membership experience and satisfaction in our dining amenity: The data regarding dining, since the last week in June 2024, shows Friday and Saturday night dinner services have averaged serving 43.3 Membership accounts per night. This utilization rate represents Member accounts simply using our bar service, placing a to-go order, or dining in the clubhouse. This translates to an average of 12.2% of our Membership using the Clubhouse to entertain themselves and their guests on weekend nights. Using those statistics, if we added 20 members in 2025, we could expect an average of 2.44 additional Membership accounts on a weekend night. If we add 50 members over the next four years, we can expect 6.1 more Membership accounts on our peak nights at the peak of season.
3. Financial Considerations: Each new Membership will bring additional initiation fees, annual operating dues, and annual capital dues. Hound Ears Club’s current waiting list is comprised of 23 applicants. It should be assumed that some of these applicants will choose not to join for various reasons. While each new Membership will be accretive, it will be so at a measured pace.
Hound Ears Board of Directors unanimously believes Hound Ears Club has the capacity to raise the Membership Cap from 355 to 405 Members without a material decline in your experience and satisfaction. Member comments and opinions are critical as we discuss this important Hound Ears Club inflection point. As your Treasurer, I want you to have the needed background and data to make an informed decision when you vote. We have scheduled Member forums to discuss and answer questions related to the Membership Cap increase. We will share more of the data we collected in detail at these forums. Here are the following scheduled meeting dates and times:

Sign up early for fall yard clean ups.
Also, the fall is a good time to trim shrubs and trees and to plant shrubs and trees. If you plant in the fall we don't have to worry about watering as often.
Every time there is a water line repair, we are asked to boil drinking water. It is a good idea to keep bottled water on hand for drinking during those days.

Hello from Security.
The speed limit in Hound Ears is 20 MPH. Please be aware that people walk on the roads at all hours with their family and pets, so we all need to obey the speed limits on our roads.
Contractors may work in Hound Ears from 7:30am until 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. They are not allowed to work on holidays or weekends. With special permission, they may be allowed to do quiet, inside work on a Saturday under favorable conditions. Emergency repairs will be allowed as needed.
Please let the Security Department know if you have a delivery going to your home. We will not allow tractor trailers to drive up most of the roads in Hound Ears because they can’t make the turns without driving over people’s lawns. We will have them park behind the Security Gate, and you can offload your items there, or you can contact Property Services and they can accept the delivery and deliver it to your home. Let us know where you want the package delivered.
The Forestry Service has not set a date for the Fuels Removal Program yet but said it should be sometime this Fall. If they are not able to have it late this year, we will have it next Spring. I will let everyone know when they let us know.
Thank you and have a safe time while you are in Hound Ears.

August kicked off with our annual Hound Ears Open, benefiting the Appalachian Regional Health System. Many thanks to all that participated for another successful event. After a tie in the shootout on hole #9, all flight winners went back to the tee for a “closest to the hole” contest to determine the Overall Champions. Mike Gaither was the last to hit and it was a shot to remember, as it finished 6” from the cup. Congratulations to Mike Gaither, Libba Gaither, Joe Craig and Debra Covington for their big win.

At ninety years old, Howard Davis keeps busy as a starter, course ranger, and locker room attendant Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Golf department at Hound Ears. He also enjoys cooking, drawing sketches, reading about history, and working out at the Rec Center in Boone. He says that working on the course keeps his head straight.
Howard grew up in Athol, Massachusetts and joined the Navy in 1956. After four years on a ship, he drove from Washington state with his wife, Alice, and two children, to Westfield, Mass. He had another three children, totaling four boys and a girl. He knew he had to learn a trade to support his family and completed a tool and die apprenticeship. He realized there was more money in being a machinist and worked his way up to plant manager overseeing 120 workers. After 35 years at Advance Manufacturing (MFG), he retired and went to Florida for 25 years. After Alice passed away, he found himself working as a ranger and working in the card room helping with breakfast at Lake Worth Country Club.
One fateful night, Howard went into Josie’s Restaurant in Boynton Beach. Two well-dressed women and a gentleman came in and they struck up a conversation. Several more nights of meeting for meals went by and Howard and one of the women, Maxine Hughes from Boone, NC., decided they were quite taken with each other. When she said she needed to get back to Boone, N.C., where she lived and spent many years as an interior designer, he said he had never heard of the place. When she left, he said he would call and text her every day. After 50 phone calls and 500 texts, she came back to Florida to make sure what they had was real. After introducing Maxine to the family and seeing how they were taken by each other, Davis decided to move to Boone and get married to Maxine on July 2022.
Davis says, “What I like about the Club and NC is that everybody is so kind, caring and loving.”

Dear 2024 Hound Ears Open Friends,
I want to send a grateful thank you to all those who played in the 2024 Hound Ears Open. By your generosity, this year the Open raised $92,000 for Linear Accelerator at the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center.
Watauga Medical Center and the healthcare system serves as a regional medical center and system. Patients come from all over the region for their care. As all of us know, these regional healthcare systems are under tremendous financial pressure since many of the patients have limited resources and the healthcare system receives limited reimbursement from the Federal Government.
I'd also like to add one comment concerning the dedicated teams that serve these patients. These are some of the best practitioners because they have CHOSEN to move to our area out of the love for the mountains and its wonderful lifestyle. Across the board, these are the sweetest, most competent caregivers any regional area could ask for.
I also want to clear up a possible misconception relative to Watauga Medical Center and the healthcare system’s affiliation with UNC Health. The Healthcare system was in need of updating its medical technology systems/electronic health records and the most cost effective method was to "piggyback" on the UNC Health technology. This is the only affiliation the healthcare system has with UNC Health. It's important to know that all of your donated dollars stay within our community here in the High Country and do not go to UNC Health.

We have had an excellent season with Members, many of them new players, coming out to play Tennis and Pickleball. Our Tennis and Pickleball Special Events have had great turnout all season long.
Our “Tiffany’s Furever” Tennis Event was a huge success with many donations, both monetary and pet items, in support of the Avery Humane Society. This event is held each year in memory of Tiffany Kermode Brown, daughter of Lee and Cindy Kermode. Her nickname was “Sunshine,” which we had plenty of last Saturday! Her favorite cake was carrot cake, which we served during lunch, and her favorite flower was a sunflower, many of which were included in the decorations and the participating players went home with the flowers.
The Racquets Pro Shop closes on Saturday, September 21, but please continue to use the court reservation system to reserve courts for both Tennis & Pickleball.
After the Racquets Pro Shop closes, we continue to maintain the Tennis courts and they will remain available from 8am to 8pm through Friday, October 20. Pickleball courts remain open year-round, weather permitting. Court registration is still required. Looking forward, we are excited to have upgrades scheduled for the Racquet Sports Center over the winter which will be unveiled in time for the 2025 season.

For regular play, you can register up to seven days in advance. We may need to adjust the specific court you registered to play on depending on the court conditions. Our Tennis clay courts need to be maintained daily, and depending on the weather, we may need to water the courts in the middle of the day. It’s important that we know at all times who is on the court so that we wouldn’t remotely turn on the sprinklers if anyone is on the court.

In today's fast-paced world, where stress and challenges often dominate our lives, cultivating an attitude of gratitude can be a transformative practice. The simple act of appreciating what we have, rather than focusing on what we lack, has profound implications for our mental, emotional, and even physical wellbeing. Research has increasingly highlighted the benefits of gratitude on overall health. Studies show that individuals who regularly practice gratitude experience lower levels of stress and depression, better sleep, and enhanced resilience in the face of adversity. This positive impact is largely due to the way gratitude influences the brain.
When we express gratitude, our brain releases dopamine and serotonin, the "feel-good" neurotransmitters that enhance our mood and make us feel more content. Over time, this can rewire the brain to focus on positive experiences, reducing the tendency to dwell on negative thoughts. This neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize itself—means that consistent gratitude can create a more positive mental outlook and improve overall emotional health.
The benefits of gratitude extend beyond mental health. A grateful mindset is associated with physical health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, stronger immune function, and reduced illness. People who practice gratitude tend to engage in healthier behaviors, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and attending regular medical checkups.
Moreover, gratitude has been linked to better sleep quality. When we focus on what we are thankful for before bed, our minds are less likely to be occupied with anxiety or stress, leading to a more restful sleep. This, in turn, contributes to better physical health and energy levels during the day.
Gratitude is a powerful tool for strengthening relationships. Expressing appreciation for others fosters a sense of connection and mutual respect, which can lead to more meaningful and lasting relationships. Whether it's a simple "thank you" to a colleague or a heartfelt note to a loved one, showing gratitude can improve communication, increase empathy, and reduce conflict.
In the workplace, a culture of gratitude can boost morale, increase job satisfaction, and

enhance teamwork. Employees who feel appreciated are more likely to be engaged, productive, and committed to their work. Developing an attitude of gratitude doesn't require grand gestures. It can be as simple as keeping a daily gratitude journal, where you write down three things you're thankful for each day. This practice helps to shift your focus from what is absent in your life to the abundance that already exists.
Another way to cultivate gratitude is by expressing it directly to others.
Acknowledge the efforts of those around you, whether in your personal life or at work. Verbalizing your appreciation can create a ripple effect, encouraging others to adopt a similar mindset.
Finally, practicing mindfulness, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can enhance your awareness of the present moment, allowing you to appreciate the small, often overlooked aspects of your life. Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine is a powerful way to enhance your overall wellbeing. By focusing on what you have rather than what you don’t, you can cultivate a positive mindset that benefits not only your mental and emotional health but also your physical wellbeing and relationships.
Gratitude is more than just a fleeting feeling —it's a way of life that can lead to lasting happiness and fulfillment. So take a moment today to reflect on the good in your life, and let gratitude guide you on your journey to a healthier, happier you.

Held on September 9 and October 14 at 1pm in the Clubhouse.
After a wonderful gathering in August, the Hound Ears Summer Book Club will continue the 2024 season on Monday, September 9, at 1PM in the Hound Ears Clubhouse to discuss Empress of the Nile: The Daredevil Archeologist Who Saved Egypt’s Ancient Temples from Destruction, by Lynne Olson.
Described by The Guardian as “a female version of the Indiana Jones story,” Empress of the Nile centers on the mission of archeologist Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt, “a daredevil whose real-life antics put Hollywood fiction to shame,” to save the ancient Egyptian temples from the floodwaters created by the construction of the Aswan Dam between 1960 and 1970. Author Lauren Willig (Band of Sisters) calls the book “an intimate portrait of a groundbreaking woman and a whirlwind tour through major events and personalities of the twentieth century.” The Hound Ears Summer Book Club meets monthly from June to October and welcomes residents, members, guests, and staff to attend. Reservations are not necessary.
