The Light We Hold - Houston Grand Opera 2025-26 Season Brochure
OR
HOUSTON GRAND OPERA’S MONUMENTAL 2025-26 SEASON, THE COMPANY
IS GOING ALL OUT. EACH OF THE AWE-INSPIRING MASTERWORKS
WE’RE PLANNING FOR OUR CITY WILL BE PERFORMED BY THE FINEST ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE—EACH OF WHOM HOLDS A LIGHT FOR OUR PEERLESS ART FORM.
We launch with Francesca Zambello’s stunning production of the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.
Fifty years ago, this timeless masterpiece set this company on its path as a trailblazing champion of American opera. Now, it returns to HGO for the first time in three decades, setting the stage for our entire historic season. This showstopping opener will be followed by another landmark, the company’s first-ever full staging of Puccini’s Il trittico, a trio of one-acts conducted by Maestro Patrick Summers, who calls this bucket-list piece “the greatest single evening of Italian opera ever composed.”
Winter will continue HGO’s commitment to the American repertoire with Kevin Puts’s Pulitzer Prizewinning Silent Night. This moving story of unity and compassion—set during the historic Christmas Truce of World War I—will be presented in a new staging, co-produced by HGO and the Metropolitan Opera, that will be unveiled for the first time in Houston. We pair this contemporary masterpiece with a classic favorite possessed of one of the most ravishingly beautiful scores in the history of music: Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, which we will also adapt for our youngest audience members at HGO’s second-annual Family Day.
In the spring, Summers conducts the company’s first-ever presentation of Handel’s Messiah, arranged by Mozart, in a mind-blowing production created by a giant of American theater: Robert Wilson. The mainstage season closes with a production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, created by the same genius, Joan Font, who recently earned rapturous acclaim for his whimsical take on the composer’s Cinderella at HGO.
Blockbuster artworks. Brilliant new productions. The biggest stars in opera. These grand plans are all part of our farewell celebration for our beloved friend Patrick Summers, who will close his long tenure as HGO’s artistic and music director in 2026—in a cosmic twist of fate, almost exactly 100 years after the birth of Carlisle Floyd, the father of American opera.
Floyd was not only a wonderful friend to HGO— co-founding and, for decades, helping to guide our Butler Studio program—but also to Maestro Summers himself. To honor this historic moment, we’re planning a new, two-night staging of Floyd’s Of Mice and Men, presented by the Butler Studio inside the Wortham’s intimate Cullen Theater.
It is a massive undertaking to stage these towering artworks together during one extraordinary season. We’re putting everything we have into creating a transcendent experience for you, our audience. I can’t wait to see you at the theater.

AN AMERICAN CLASSIC
It’s been 50 years since HGO first presented the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, restoring the “folk opera” to its creators’ full original vision in a landmark production that went on to Broadway and earned HGO both a Tony and a Grammy. Now, audiences have the chance to again experience the cherished American classic that set HGO on its path as a trailblazer, presented in an acclaimed production from director Francesca Zambello. Set in the Jim Crow South, in the fictional Charleston slum of Catfish Row, the opera shares the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar, and Bess, a woman struggling with addiction, who fall in love. With a moving score that seamlessly blends jazz, spirituals, blues, and classical music into timeless songs like “Summertime” and “Bess, You Is My Woman Now,” Porgy and Bess offers an unforgettable portrayal of resilience, community, love, and hope against all odds. HGO’s production features a cast of opera giants, led by bass-baritone Michael Sumuel as Porgy and soprano Angel Blue as Bess. After conducting the HGO Orchestra during Concert of Arias 2025, the brilliant James Gaffigan returns to the podium.

TRIPLE THE DRAMA
Gripping drama, heartfelt emotion, and clever comedy: Il trittico comes to HGO in the company’s first-ever full presentation of Puccini’s masterful trio of one-act operas. Led by acclaimed director James Robinson, the evening begins with Il tabarro, a tale of passion and betrayal set on the Seine, where the lives of a barge captain, his young wife, and her lover intertwine in a tragic crescendo. Next, Suor Angelica delves into the desperation of a cloistered nun with a haunted past, whose story—reset by Robinson in a children’s hospital—culminates in heartrending redemption. The night concludes with the director’s stylish, Felliniesque take on the brilliantly witty Gianni Schicchi, the tale of a cunning conman who turns a family’s greed into a delightful farce, featuring what is perhaps Puccini’s best-loved aria, “O mio babbino caro.”
This production boasts a powerhouse lead cast that will take on multiple roles across the three operas: soprano Corinne Winters in her company debut, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, bass-baritone Ryan McKinny, and tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz. Maestro Patrick Summers conducts.

MUSIC UNITES, WAR DIVIDES
Don’t miss the Houston premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2011 opera Silent Night. HGO will present a new production of the opera, in a revised version from hit-making composer Kevin Puts, who recently debuted his The Hours to raves at the Met. Inspired by the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, this powerful portrayal of peace amidst conflict captures the real-life Christmas truce of 1914, during World War I. The opera’s trilingual libretto, crafted by Mark Campbell, introduces us to a diverse group of characters on the front line, among them the German opera singer/soldier Nikolaus Sprink and his diva lover, Anna Sørensen; Scottish soldier Jonathan Dale and his priest, Father Palmer; and French Lieutenant Audebert, awaiting news of his son’s birth. On Christmas Eve, Sprink’s defiant caroling sparks a ceasefire, leading to an unforgettable night of shared humanity, soccer, and song. Directed by James Robinson, this production features a superlative cast that includes tenor Duke Kim as Sprink and soprano Sylvia D’Eramo as Anna, with bass-baritone Ryan McKinny, baritone Iurii Samoilov, and baritone Thomas Glass as the story’s three lieutenants. Dynamic young conductor Kensho Watanabe makes his company debut at the podium.

DON’T MISS: FAMILY DAY PRESENTS HANSEL AND GRETEL ON FEBRUARY 14 AT 11 AM
A DELECTABLE TREAT
Step through the forest and into the enchanting world of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, a timeless adaptation of the Brothers Grimm tale that will captivate audiences of all ages.
Brought to life by director/designer Antony McDonald in his company debut, this family-friendly production unfolds in a German romantic setting, full of dirndls, Alpine hats, and misty clouds.
The composer’s whimsical, sophisticated melodies, derived from German nursery songs, will hold audiences spellbound as they join Hansel and Gretel on their dangerous journey to the realm where the Witch reigns from her house of cake, topped with a shining red cherry. Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as Hansel and soprano Mané Galoyan as Gretel lead the opera’s stellar cast, with mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton making a star turn as the Witch who, outsmarted by the children, takes a dive into a bubbling cauldron.
Andreas Ottensamer, artistic director of the Bürgenstock Festival in Switzerland, makes his anticipated HGO debut at the podium.

A MASTERPIECE REIMAGINED
A bale of hay comes to life and plays with a little girl. A headless mannequin holds a lobster on a leash. A confused astronaut wanders amongst a group of choristers while a video of a collapsing glacier plays in the background. These are but a few of the arresting images from Robert Wilson’s mesmerizing vision of the beloved Messiah, composed by Handel and arranged by Mozart. The director’s production will be staged in the United States for the first time at HGO, in the first performances of the composer’s majestic oratorio in company history. In Wilson’s hands, the Messiah—a narrative-free meditation on Jesus’s role as the Christian messiah, originally conceived for concert halls—transforms into a surreal and mesmerizing theatrical spectacle reminiscent of Disney’s Fantasia. This anticipated production will showcase the renowned HGO Chorus alongside an exceptional cast: soprano Ying Fang, countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, tenor Benjamin Bliss, and bass-baritone Nicholas Newton, joined by the dancer Alexis Fousekis. Maestro Patrick Summers takes the podium for this can’t-miss HGO event.

LOVE, LAUGHTER, AND MISCHIEF
Outrageous disguises, intercepted love letters, and comic misunderstandings—Rossini’s uproarious masterpiece, The Barber of Seville, has them all. The opera follows the dashing Count Almaviva, who’s in love with the mysterious beauty Rosina—but her pompous old guardian, Dr. Bartolo, keeps close watch over her, as he plans to marry her himself. Enter everyone’s favorite scheming barber, Figaro, who puts his clever tricks to use in the name of true love. Propelled by the composer’s lively score, from the iconic overture to Figaro’s rapid-fire “Largo al factotum,” this raucous production is headlined by a superlative cast: baritone Will Liverman in his HGO mainstage debut as Figaro; tenor Jack Swanson as Almaviva; mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack in her company debut as Rosina; baritone Alessandro Corbelli as Dr. Bartolo; and bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni as Don Basilio. This fan favorite receives a delightful staging from director Joan Font, with Gemma New, principal conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, making her company debut at the podium.

There can be no more fitting way for HGO to celebrate the centennial of the birth of composer Carlisle Floyd—who founded the company’s Butler Studio program with then-General Director David Gockley in 1977—than a special staging of his evocative opera Of Mice and Men, performed by a cast of artists from the 2025-26 class of the Butler Studio. Based on John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella of the same name, the acclaimed 1970 opera will be presented in the Wortham’s intimate Cullen Theater. The opera shares the poignant tale of two laborers seeking work during the Great Depression: George, small and shrewd, and Lennie, whose intellectual disability and formidable strength often lead to trouble. Together, the friends dream of buying a plot of land all their own, where they can live in peace, but their story ends in tragedy—and an act of mercy made all the more moving by Floyd’s haunting score, with its masterful blend of folk tunes and blues melodies. Join HGO for an unforgettable operatic experience as the company honors the great American composer whose legacy is inseparable from our own history.
