Hougang Secondary’s Learning for Life Programme – Community Youth Leadership (LLPCYL) : GRC-In-Action, A Hougean Way of Life, captures the aspiration of our teachers and students to develop leaders who impact their communities through advocacy and active service.

The school’s LLP-CYL provides authentic learning experiences to nurture students who embody Gratitude, Respect and Compassion as Self-directed learners, Team players, Active contributors and Role models (GRC STAR) through student leadership trainings, mentoring and VIA. The school’s VIA programme, termed 2:168 Mission Troopers Programme, not only develops students’ character and leadership in real-life values education, but also contributes to meeting real needs of the community. What is 2:168 Mission Troopers Programme? The term 2:168 refers to devoting 2 hours out of 168 hours in a week to service. In essence, staff and students at Hougang Secondary School commit two hours weekly to serve a community or to advocate a social cause.

Our Programme For all 1. Student leadership Training based on the Leadership Challenge Model by Kouzes and Posner The school adopts The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner as their student leadership framework. Secondary One and Two students will be taken through the 5 Practices of effective leaders during CCE lessons by their Character Coaches (CCs).

The 5 Practices are: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart. The lessons provide students with skills and behavioural practices necessary for self-leadership and team leadership which they can then bring it for application in their CCA, VIA and family.

Student Leadership Practice Inventory (SLPI) was done at the end of the programme for the Secondary Twos which measure their leadership behaviours. Thereafter CCs will follow up with the students during PTI to see how they are able to improve.

2. VIA through IPW (integrated project work) Leveraging on elements of Design Thinking, all lower secondary students collaborate on a project where they would advocate change that impacts the school or home (Secondary Ones) and the community (Secondary Twos) during the weekly IPW lessons.

3. VIA through CCA Each CCA adopts a regular VIA programme, serving in one of 4 VIA focus, namely, the children, the VWOS/HOMES, community outreach and the environment. Facilitated by the CCA teachers, students are led to think of, implement and celebrate their learning through the service learning approach.

For some 1. Prefects training a) Student Leaders Training Camp (SLTC) The aim of the camp is to build a community of student leaders who are able to support one another in their leadership process. At the same time, differentiated trainings were provided for the different groups of officially-appointed student leaders to help them understand their roles and responsibilities. The camp also allowed the student leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the Leadership Challenge Model.

After the camp, the student leaders were guided to plan and implement initiatives that fit the school needs and are aligned with the GRC STAR.

b) SLPI (Student Leaders Practice Inventory) Students are able to assess the frequency in exhibiting leadership qualities and have a better understanding of him/herself and see which aspect of the 5 Practices his/her leadership strengths lie in through a self and peer assessment feedback tool based on The Leadership Challenge.

c) Habitudes Student leaders embark on a monthly training module based on Habitudes, which uses imagery to teach leadership qualities.

The FamChamps Award 2017 Hougang Secondary is the proud recipient of Most Impactful Family Service Project award. The team from Hougang Secondary School stood out among the other projects based on these qualities: Team Effort, Differentiation, Depth and Reach.

This year’s theme “Catalyst for Change!” is an apt reminder to all student leaders to make the difference. The guest speaker, Ms Carol Liew, shared her experience working at Mercy Relief. Her story has ignited that spark for students and their parents to serve their community as a greater blesser.
