The winter is over, and Oxford and Ole Miss are blooming with beauty and style as locals and visitors emerge to enjoy the outdoors. From art crawls to southern cooking and expressions, Experience Oxford has everything you need to get the full Oxford experience this spring. As an outsider from the Mississippi Delta, who relocated to the area, Oxonians have welcomed me into the community, and I feel right at home. It is my hope that Experience Oxford extends that same hospitality to the Oxford community, and all of our wonderful guests who visit. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re new to the area, I suggest taking a tour on the Double Decker buses or attending an arts crawl at the Powerhouse. Tom Brokaw to Deliver UM Commencement Address By Mitchell Diggs Tom Brokaw, one of the most respected people in broadcast news, is returning to Oxford on May 14 to deliver the main address at the University of Mississippi’s 163rd Commencement. Best known as the longtime anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” the journalist and author has visited the university several times over the past decade. He is the only person to host all three major NBC News programs: “Today,” “Nightly News” and “Meet the Press.” Brokaw, who remains a special correspondent for NBC News, speaks to graduating students, their families and other guests at 9 a.m. in the Grove. “Tom Brokaw is one of the most astute observers of our culture and its evolution over the past half-century,” said Ole Miss Chancellor, Jeff Vitter. “He has enjoyed a front-row seat at some of the most significant events of our time, and his discernments on American politics and life are remarkable. We look forward to his insights and sage advice.”

Contributions to Ole Miss

He retired from “Nightly News” in 2004 but when friend and colleague Tim Russert died in June 2008, Brokaw stepped in as interim moderator for Russert’s Sunday morning show, “Meet the Press,” until a permanent replacement could be found.

Besides Brokaw’s address, the main ceremony also includes remarks by the senior class president, recognition for the university’s outstanding teacher and announcements of the Frist Student Service awards and the Distinguished Research and Creative Achievement Award.

Retirement and Ole Miss

Brokaw previously served as a guest lecturer in the UM Meek School of Journalism and New Media in 2010. He also discussed presidential politics in a campus program before the first presidential debate between then-Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain.

Since leaving the anchor chair, he has reported documentaries for the Discovery Channel and the History Channel, hosted the baseball documentary series “The Boys in the Hall” for Fox Sports Net and moderated the second McCain-Obama presidential debate, at Belmont University.

Brokaw’s Beginnings

As an author, he is best known for “The Greatest Generation,” profiling Americans who grew up during the Great Depression and helped win World War II. His other books include “A Long Way from Home: Growing Up in the American Heartland in the Forties and Fifties,” “Boom! Voices of the Sixties Personal Reflections on the ’60s and Today” and “A Lucky Life Interrupted: A Memoir of Hope.”

The eldest son of a construction worker and a post office clerk, Brokaw is a native of Webster, South Dakota. He earned a degree in political science from the University of South Dakota, where he worked as a radio reporter, in 1962. He started his career at KTIV-TV in Sioux City, Iowa, before moving on to stations in Omaha, Nebraska, Atlanta and Los Angeles. In 1973, Brokaw became NBC’s Washington correspondent, covering the Watergate scandal and other major stories. He became host of “Today” in 1976, remaining in that post until 1982, when he was named co-anchor of “NBC Nightly News” alongside Roger Mudd. Brokaw took over as sole anchor of the program the following year. During his tenure, he reported live on the fall of the Berlin Wall, covered the explosion of the shuttle Challenger and conducted the first one-on-one interviews with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Tom Brokaw has been a good friend of Ole Miss since his first visit here in 2000,” said Curtis Wilkie, Cook Chair of Journalism and the first fellow of the UM Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics. “He and his wife, Meredith, have come back repeatedly to visit the university for both NBC assignments and pleasure, so he’s a great choice for commencement speaker.” Courtesy of UM News

The city of Oxford’s Double Decker bus tours are currently running, and just in time for the Double Decker Arts Festival on April 22 and 23. This year, two new buses have been added to the tour making there a grand total of four Oxford Double Decker buses. The two new buses came to Oxford from Phoenix, Arizona last fall, and could only go 45 miles per hour. All four buses were used in England on a bus route at one time, according to the city superintendent of the city shop (fleet maintenance), Bo Ragon.

History of the Tours The Double Decker tours started when the city purchased two retired London street buses in 1990. The buses have helped to create an image of Oxford tourism, which reflects the origin of the town’s name: Oxford, England. The tours are led by Jack Mayfield, “The Guru of Oxford,” and a HottyToddy.com contributor. Mayfield, a fifth generation Oxonian, has been leading the tours for the last six years. Mayfield gained his knowledge through his love for history. “I’ve always been a history buff,” Mayfield said. “I’ve always loved Oxford and Ole Miss.” Guiding the tours is something Mayfield looks forward to. “The kids love riding on the top of those old buses and that’s really interesting to see,” Mayfield said. “Most times they have no interest in what I’m saying.” The two new buses are numbered “18” and “38” after the football jerseys of Ole Miss greats: Archie Manning and Chucky Mullins. In addition to the new buses,

the older bus numbered “10” after Eli Manning’s Rebel football jersey got new upholstery. “After the Double Decker Arts Fest, the two new buses will be available to rent out for weddings and other functions,” Ragon said. “Until last fall the two older ones were available to rent, but will now only be used for the city and university functions in order to extend their useful lives.”

Tour Dates and Times There are usually five tours in the fall and spring. In the fall, bus tours are given on Fridays before Ole Miss football home games. During the spring, tours are scheduled on the Friday Ole Miss baseball home games. According to visitor services coordinator Katie Kasier, the buses, which can each hold around 60 people, take visitors around the historic downtown square, the campus of the University of Mississippi and other places of interest, including William Faulkner’s home, Rowan Oak, and his burial place at St. Peter’s Cemetery. “There are many reasons people visit Oxford every day, but Rowan Oak and the University of Mississippi are the two most popular reasons for visiting,” Kasier said. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased over the phone by calling the Visit Oxford office with a credit card, or by visiting the Visit Oxford office at 1013 Jackson Avenue East. The University of Mississippi class of 2016 donated money to install three flagpoles and an enclave between Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and The Pavilion at Ole Miss as a legacy gift. As the first graduating class to experience The Pavilion at Ole Miss, the class of 2016 raised $10,752 from 851 seniors to fully fund the purchase and the installation of the flagpoles. “People around the state, nation and world are noticing the great things that are happening here at the University of Mississippi,” said University of Mississippi Senior Associate Provost, Dr. Noel Wilkin. “It is clear that students want to be a part of a vibrant and successful

community of scholars who provide them with incredible opportunities. The work that we do is filled with incredible purpose.” The Pavilion at Ole Miss opened in January when Ole Miss hosted Alabama in basketball. The Pavilion replaced the Tad Smith Coliseum, where the Rebel basketball team had played since 1966. With a capacity of 9,500, the Pavilion has a Steak ‘n Shake, Old Venice Pizza and a Raising Cane’s for fans to enjoy. One of the most prominent features of the new arena is the LED video board, which is the largest center-hung video display in college sports.

A Hidden Gem

Seed Lending Library in Oxford, Mississippi By: Eileen Saunders

Founded two years ago, the Seed Lending Library, a hidden Oxford gem, is located just inside the front doors at the Lafayette County/Oxford Public Library on Bramlett Boulevard. A patron brought an article to Head Librarian, Laurabeth Walker, about how libraries around the country were starting seed lending programs. The idea took root, and the Oxford Seed Lending Library was born. With a small group of volunteers, requests for donations were made to large seed companies to get the collection started. Many boxes of seeds were donated including vegetables, herbs, ornamentals and flowers.

How it works

Grouped by type and alphabetized, the seeds are easy to browse through. Once you make your selection, simply take the packets to the circulation desk to check them out. There is no return date but the library does ask that anyone taking seeds to save seeds from their harvesting later in the year and donate them back to the library.

Types of Seeds

The Seed Lending Library will not lend, nor take as a donation, just any kind of seed. It is important to note that it only carries Heirloom, Organic and non-GMO seeds. This is to ensure the purest and healthiest seeds are available for local gardeners. Do not be spooked by the expiration date stamped on the packet. Seeds can sit in a warehouse for a while before being sent to stores, and they will still be good. Regardless, not all seeds will germinate, so an older packet may simply have a lower percentage of seeds that will germinate. The library also takes donations year round from anyone so if people have extra seeds they do not need, they are asked to consider dropping them off at the circulation desk for the staff to log in.

Teaching to Memorize Now in his gap year from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mullen is teaching the world his invaluable memorization techniques. Mullen has a website where he teaches memorization techniques: mullenmemory.com. Interested universities and businesses can also book him for lectures and workshops. Mullen offers personalized coaching too for oneon-one or for a group.

In December of 2015, the first American won the title of 2015 World Memory Champion at the 24th World Memory Championships held in Chengdu, China. The long-time Oxford native, Alex Mullen, achieved the highest overall score ever in the history of World Memory Championship since its inception in 1991. Mullen became the first person to memorize over 3,000 digits in one hour. In doing so, he broke one world record and five U.S. records. At the competition, the events range from memorizing the order of a deck of cards to abstract shapes.

Mullen is a person of considerable talent and generosity, but he insists that his memorization skills came to be through consistent training. “I definitely haven’t been a good memorizer my whole life. I was first introduced to the memory world when I watched at TED talk by Joshua Foer (“Feats of Memory Anyone Can Do”) in March of 2013, during my junior year of college,” Mullen said. “His talk blew me away at the time, at least in part because I felt my own memory was poor and that it was hampering academically. This got me incredibly excited to try the techniques out for myself. To my great surprise, they worked very well.”

An Impressive Record Mullen memorized 28 decks and four cards in one hour (a U.S. record), spent 21.04 seconds in memorizing a single deck (a U.S. record), memorized 3,885 binary digits (1s and 0s) in 30 minutes as well as 505 abstract shapes in 15 minutes (both U.S. records). “It was an unbelievable three days for me. New Campus Recreation Facility Coming to Ole Miss By Allie Kmec With a rapidly growing student body, The University of Mississippi will construct a new fitness center south of campus near Whirlpool Trails, which will be completed by fall of 2018. “In the new facility, we plan to have three additional group fitness studios and 25,000 square feet of fitness space,” said Peter Tulchinsky, director of Campus Recreation. “We are also planning for two basketball courts, a multi-activity court, climbing wall, indoor track, classroom with demonstration kitchen and functional training area.” The Turner Center, which is the current building for campus recreation, has 9,000 square feet in the fitness center and three group fitness studios. The new center, expected to be complete in the fall of

2018, will be more than twice the size of the Turner Center and will have a modern appearance. “I am most excited for more fitness classes to teach in, and of course, the rock climbing wall,” said Kelsie Downie, current Turner Center employee. According to current employees, the new recreation facility will have a lot to offer, and it will be very attractive for incoming students. The new facility will also have a transportation hub and an additional commuter parking lot. “The new facility will provide outstanding recreational and wellness facilities for our university community,” Tulchinsky said. Oxford Arts Crawl Provides Free Monthly Viewing of Local Art Galleries by Jeff McVay

t is time to start marking calendars for one of Oxford’s favorite staple events, Lafayette County’s monthly Oxford Arts Crawl. The popular event, held religiously on the fourth Tuesday of each month through October, is sponsored by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC), and is always free of charge and open to everyone. “The Oxford Arts Crawl has become just one more of the events to make our community distinct. The monthly event provides a chance to get a survey of the ever-changing list of art exhibits 18

and shows at all venues; from galleries, community spaces to museums,” said YAC Director Wayne Andrews. “It inspires residents and visitors to set aside time to view art using the monthly event as a way to recharge the mind as they discover the ever-changing exhibits available daily in our community,”

Free to Participants

Parking for the event is free to participants and is available in the lot located behind the Powerhouse on 413 S 14th Street in Oxford. From the Powerhouse, the Double

Decker bus will shuttle participants regularly throughout evening. The bus will make stops at the University of Mississippi Museum, the Oxford Square and the Ole Miss campus. With the regularity of the bus, participants can easily visit each of the locations and enjoy all of the art on display. “Join us the fourth Tuesday of each month for a monthly tour of Oxford’s art spaces – everything from the traditional to one night only pop-up shows,” the YAC website printed.

Monthly Arts Crawls

Other crawls planned for 2016 include: March 22, April 26, May 24, June 28, July 26, August 23, September 27 and October 25. The Oxford Arts Crawl is presented each month with the generous support of Visit Oxford, the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, the University of Mississippi Museum and the University of Mississippi Department of Art. Ole Miss Recruiter Makes a Difference for Future Students by Christopher Neal drienne McDill, a Newton, Mississippi native, joined the Rebel Team as an Ole Miss admissions counselor in May of 2015. Before being hired as an Admissions Counselor, McDill worked as a graduate assistant for the Office of College Programs in the Division of Outreach on the Oxford campus. Through her time as a graduate assistant, she was able to help students with internship opportunities in New York and Washington D.C. McDill attended the University of Southern Mississippi for her undergraduate studies and graduated at the top of her class from the School of Mass Communication and Journalism with a degree in advertising. After completing her studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, McDill came to Ole Miss for her graduate studies, where she graduated in May of 2015 with a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from the Meek School of Journalism and New Media. “The best thing about my job is the connections I have made and just being able to help students receive a college education at an affordable price,” McDill said. “Ole Miss really is a great value

when it comes to the academics and the amount you pay to attend.” McDill was attracted to her job mainly because of her love for Ole Miss. “It requires a lot of travel, but the connections I have made are unforgettable and very rewarding,” McDill said. “Although it’s not as tough as football recruiting, there is nothing more rewarding than having a student switch schools mid-year, and decide they want to come to Ole Miss.” McDill enjoys guiding students on their college search process and helping them find the best fit. “I am fortunate that I am able to travel the great state of Mississippi recruiting the best and brightest students to join the Ole Miss family,” McDill said. Take a Survey: Help Oxford’s Yoknapatawpha Arts Council By Jeff McVay

For the remainder of 2016, those who enjoy Yoknapatawpha Arts Council’s (YAC) versatile programming will be asked to complete a quick- approximately three-minute- arts economic impact survey.

was paid for the arts program? Did you purchase souvenirs or gifts while at the event? Was clothing purchased to attend the event (i.e. a tuxedo or dress)? Did you use local transportation to get to and from the event?

The survey will be conducted by local volunteers in an effort to gather data for an Americans for the Arts study. The study’s intent is to examine the economic impact that YAC’s programming has on the entire LafayetteOxford-University community, gas, hotel rooms, dining, other entertainment options and transportation, to name a few.

Patrons will be asked to complete the survey by hand at each of the events. The form is a simple, one-sided affair with check boxes for easy completion. Participation in the survey is strictly voluntary.

Why Our Community? The fact that Lafayette County is one of only 300 communities nationwide – and the only one in Mississippi to be considered for the study – speaks volumes about the work YAC does on a daily basis. Communities that lack in arts and entertainment programming are not considered to participate in the study. Thankfully, Oxford has no such programming issues.

Improvement at No Cost According to YAC Executive Director, Wayne Andrews, having an economic impact study conducted on a community is normally a service that costs up to $15,000. YAC will have no cost for being one of the communities chosen to participate. The results of the study can later be used by city officials to examine how, exactly, the arts have impacted tourism and our economy as a whole; making contribution and partnership decisions easier and more objective.

You might hear one of these exchanges if you ask for directions:

1. “It’s back there at the edge of nothing. Did you see the Sunoco Station back yonder? Turn there.” 2. “You’ll pass the old Sammon’s place a piece down the road. Take a right at the first blinking light.”

3. “You’ll think you’re lost, or leaving the country, just keep going. They’ll be a fork in the road, take the right. A piece down that road you’ll see a barn, then a church. After the graveyard take the next right. The house is the third on the left. It’s so far out they have to pump in sunshine.”

Here are the phrases to know for getting lost: 1. A piece down the road. Meaning: About a mile or two. 2. I had to grease the wagon twice before hit the main road. Meaning: About 4 hours. 3. Just a hop skip and a jump. Meaning: About 30 minutes.

4. Just Over Yonder. Meaning: There, where I would point if Momma would let me. 5. Over yonder in the edge of nothing. Meaning: You should have left last month.

Adam Richman from Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food announced his love for Gus’s a few years back, and last year, the crispy, spicy chicken even earned the No. 1 slot on MSN.com’s list of America’s 50 Best Fried Chicken Spots, according to Gus’s general manager Brad Whiteside.

“We strive to serve the same quality fried chicken as the original Gus’s in Mason, Tennessee,” Whiteside said. “We get the original batter mixture from them, so it’s as close as you can get to the original, which has a really crisp skin that doesn’t tear off when you bite into it, and has a little spice, which gives it a nice flavor but doesn’t make it hot.”

Oxford Exclusives The Oxford location is currently the only Gus’s offering a chicken tender salad, according to Whiteside. “We’re also offering a chicken tender wrap, which is relatively new,” Whiteside said, “and we were the first Gus’s to open a full bar; the other locations only offered beer until recently. In addition to beer, we feature a cocktail list and wines.”

Fish has always been a popular choice on Fridays, so it was no surprise when Whiteside said the Friday catfish platter ($7.50) has been a big hit at Gus’s. “We go through a whole case of catfish every Friday,” Whiteside said. “The catfish is battered the same way as the fried chicken and we make our own homemade tartar sauce to pair with it.”

“The chicken and waffles features two of our tenders on top of a waffle with syrup for $6.99,” Whiteside said.

Cajun-Themed Fare Continues to Impress at Oby’s by liz barrett foster It has been more than a decade since Ayers Spencer and David Calhoun decided to pool their resources and open an outpost of a Cajun-themed restaurant in the heart of Oxford. Since the beginning, Oby’s has been designed as a quick-casual eatery, with ordering at the counter and delivery to your table, but Oby’s co-owner Ayers Spencer is quick to point out that there’s a lot of focus on customer service. “When someone comes in on a busy Friday lunch and they only have 30 or 45 minutes, they know they can order at the counter and get their food at the table without being in a rush the whole time,” Spencer said. “It’s not fast food; everything is made to order, but we try to get the food out as quick as possible for those who are on a short lunch break.”

Navigating the Menu Walking into Oby’s and seeing its huge menu board can be intimidating for a first timer, but you’ll soon find that there’s something for everyone. “When people ask me, I tell them that Oby’s is mainly a Cajun-themed restaurant,” Spencer said. “We have homemade red beans and rice, jambalaya, bread pudding, po-boys, etc. But we also have items such as fresh salads, catfish, chicken tenders and more. I think our extensive menu has helped us cater to a lot of different tastes over the years.”

Some Oby’s customer favorites, according to Spencer, are the chicken tenders, shrimp po-boy, and catfish. And Spencer’s favorites? Well, there’s not much on the menu he hasn’t eaten and recommended over the years, but his current favorites include the chicken club wrap, Creole roast beef sandwich, catfish po-boy, fried chicken club salad and turkey po-boy.

Looking Back and Moving Forward When asked how business has changed from when Oby’s first opened, Spencer said, “Oxford’s not a little town anymore. There used to be a noticeable drop in business in the summer, but not so much anymore. We’ve recently hired a director of catering to help us grow the catering side of our business, we’re using Landshark Delivery to offer our customers delivery and we’ve even considered branching out to another town with a second location.” With more than 100 restaurants in Oxford, Spencer understands what it takes to keep a business moving forward. “When you have a level of competition like we do in Oxford, you know you have to serve a good quality product, be competitive and give great customer service,” Spencer said. “We’re not 100 percent perfect, but my goal is that everyone who comes through these doors leaves happy, goes home and tells their friends, and comes back.” Download the hottytoddy.com app today!

Mississippi Pot Roast By Laurie Tripplette

On Cooking Southern: Easy Sunday Pot Roast Takes Center Stage, Mississippi Style 3 to 5 lb chuck, rump or bottom round roast 1 (2 oz) pkg Buttermilk Ranch Dressing mix 1 (2 oz) pkg Au Jus or low-sodium brown gravy mix 5 to 8 pepperoncini peppers 1/4 c pepperoncini pepper juice 1 stick (1/2 c) unsalted butter Rinse and pat dry a good cut of chuck, bottom round or rump roast with minimal veins of cartilaginous fat. Pour a fourth-cup of pepperoncini jar juice into a 6-qt slow cooker. (A smaller cooker with basic low and high settings may be used for a smaller roast.) No need to sear the roast â&#x20AC;&#x201D; place raw meat into the cooker. Sprinkle top of roast evenly with the buttermilk dressing mix, followed by the au jus or brown gravy mix. Position 5 to 8 pepperoncini peppers over the roast. Place the stick of butter in the center of the roast. Cover and set cooker to 4, 6 or 8 hours, depending on when you need it finished. Allow cooked roast to sit on warm setting for about 30 minutes. Skim or drain off grease. Remove roast to a platter and shred with two forks. If gravy is desired, combine pot drippings and juices with melted butter mixed with a small amount of flour in a hot skillet. Stir until evenly browned. Pour over the roast. Real Estate Agent Paula Crum Is ‘’Making The Move to Get You Home’’ By Emily Newton Paula Crum, a real estate agent through Tommy Morgan, Inc. Realtors, enjoys finding a home for her clients.

“After I retired from FedEx, we decided we wanted to move home to Oxford,” Paula said. “We were so excited!”

The multi award-winning real estate agent moved to Oxford with her husband, David, in 2012 after retiring as a senior systems assistant architect for FedEx in 2011, but their love for Oxford started many years earlier.

The excitement did not stop at just moving to Oxford. Helping other people find their homes in Oxford became Crum’s forte.

David graduated from Ole Miss during the Archie Manning era, while Crum attended the University of Memphis. According to Paula, her husband brought her to Ole Miss and she “fell in love with it.” The two married and bought property in Oxford in hopes of settling in the beloved community. Due to their demanding jobs in Memphis, the Crum’s sold their land and delayed their move to Oxford until their retirement in 2011.

“I enjoy people, and when you enjoy people and having fun, things happen,” Paula said. “I love finding the house for the person and not finding a house to sell. I’m not in real estate just to be in real estate. I love people, and this gives me an opportunity to meet lots of people.”

Experience and Achievements Paula attended the University of Memphis and later finished her degree at Christian Brothers College. Upon getting her degree, Paula earned her realtors license in Tennessee and held it for 30 years, which makes her very experienced.

She has been with Tommy Morgan, Inc. Realtors since October of 2014, but has worked as a real estate agent in Oxford since 2013. Continuing her education, Paula attends training each Wednesday at the offices of Tommy Morgan, Inc. Realtors to educate herself on the changing trends of real estate. “We have training every Wednesday afternoon for the latest and greatest of real estate training and law,” Paula said. “Agents are expected to take 16 hours of credit courses a year; we have at least 8 hours each month.” Paula does not stop at just educating herself on the most recent realty news and laws, but she puts her knowledge to practice in her seven step process to buying a home, which she presents to her clients. “I get to help people find the homes of their dreams,” Paula said. “It’s a huge investment and responsibility for a realtor.” According to Paula, the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you) is the standard she operates on, which is a part of the National Association of Realtors code of ethics. “To be a realtor, you are under a more rigid standard or practice of real estate and are to follow the national code of ethics of the National Association of Realtors,” Paula said.

The code of ethics Paula follows is to be fair, have high integrity and to morally conduct business relations. In fact, Crum has won several awards in her field, including the 2015 Jack Riley Spirit Award, which was voted on by her peers. The award goes to someone who is always cordial and helpful. Other awards Paula has won include the 2015 Top Lister Award for having the most properties listed in Oxford and Lafayette County with Tommy Morgan, Inc. Realtors.

Types of Real Estate As far as listings, Paula is not limited to just selling homes. Crum can list condos, land and commercial real estate as well. “I put the needs of my clients first,” Paula said. “I have 47 years of experience with Tommy Morgan behind me.” Paula uses her own website, oxfordmshomes.net, to update her clients on the latest real estate news. We have a deficit when it comes to available properties right now.
