Dog AdviceGrooming to Keep Pets Clean and Healthy

Regular grooming can keep your dog looking and smelling his or her best, but it's also important for maintaining health. If you choose to groom at home rather than opting for (often expensive) professional care, it's also an opportunity to examine your pet for potential concerns.

30 | HotspotsMagazine.com
Pet Edition

A proper grooming routine starts with the right tools. Consider these suggestions from The Humane Society of the United States:

• • • • •

Dog-friendly nail clippers

Rubber-bristled brush

Dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste

Dog-friendly shampoo and conditioner Cotton balls

Blunt-ended shears or small clippers with guides

Microfiber towel

Trimming Nails

When your dog's nails nearly touch the ground, it's time for a trim, typically every 3-4 weeks. Trimming the part of the nail that turns down helps prevent pain and damage to paws.

If your dog has white nails, avoid cutting the "quick," the pink part that's visible on white nails, which bleeds when cut. For dark nails, simply trim a bit at a time until evidence of the quick is visible.

Bathing and Brushing

Frequency for baths and brushing depends on your dog's coat type – be sure to research optimal grooming schedules based on his or her breed. In general, The Humane Society of the United States recommends these guidelines:

* Short, smooth or wiry coat: Brush once a week with a rubber-bristled brush.

* Long, silky or curly coat: Brush once a day with a rubber-bristled brush or wire slicker brush. Use a steel comb to prevent tangles or mats, if necessary.

* Double coat: Use an undercoat rake or de-shedding tool to gently de-shed once a week in addition to regular brushing routines. When it's bath time, use a shampoo formulated for dogs and a damp cloth or cotton ball to clean around the eyes and ears without pushing anything into the eyes or ears. Dry with a microfiber towel or hair dryer on a low setting.

HotspotsMagazine.com | 31

Cutting Fur

Be careful and work slowly to avoid mistakes and keep your dog calm and comfortable. Brush, bathe and completely dry prior to cutting fur with blunt-ended shears or small clippers with guide combs. Specifically trim hair covering the eyes and private areas and between your pup's paw pads. It may be helpful to watch a tutorial online to ensure success.

Brushing Teeth

You can prevent gum disease and plaque buildup by brushing your dog's teeth with a soft toothbrush and dog-friendly toothpaste. Make sure your pet is comfortable and start slow, staying on the outside surfaces of teeth and gently rubbing back and forth. Focus on the area where the tooth surface meets the gum.

Bonding with Your Four-Legged Friend

Your dog may be one of your best friends, but that bond doesn't happen overnight. Investing in quality one-on-one time can have a big impact on the bond you build with your four-legged companion.

One of the best ways to show dogs love is by keeping them healthy and spending quality time with them. Dedicating time every day to your dog's wellbeing can help establish a connection, give you opportunities to express affection and foster shared bonding moments.

Pet Edition 36 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Grooming

Some pets love bathtime; others avoid it at all costs. Either way, you can make the experience more rewarding for you and your pet if you use it as an opportunity to spend some quality time together and shower your pet with extra affection.

Many pets are especially sensitive to grooming near their eyes, but keeping the eyes clean and free of dirt and buildup may help reduce the risk of infection, reduce tear stains and support your dog's eye health. Consider options like Project Watson eye wash for dogs, which comes in an easy-to-use bottle with a tip that allows for a steady stream of solution to use alone or by soaking a clean washcloth. Made with naturally inspired, high-quality ingredients, the eye wash is designed to match the pH of a dog's eye and help remove dried mucous, foreign materials, pollen and other irritants.

Between grooming sessions, you can also clean your dog's eyes with eyelid wipes. The wipes, which are part of the Project Watson line of dog care products developed by the experts at Bausch + Lomb and evaluated by veterinarians, are formulated with micellar technology that cleanses and hydrates around the eyes while helping remove excess buildup associated with irritated, dry eyes. The gentle formula is paraben free, pH-balanced and fragrance free, made to mimic the ingredients found in natural tears and provide a soothing, gentle cleaning.

Training

Teaching your dog obedience isn't just about eliminating undesirable behaviors. Training allows you to clearly communicate your expectations to your dog. It also builds your dog's confidence through positive feedback received after mastering a command or new trick. Most dogs thrive on meeting their owners' expectations, so consistent commands they can recognize and follow help deepen your connection.

Another way to build trust through behavior training is establishing regular routines. Giving your dog a clear set of expectations helps build mutual trust. You can create routines around the key milestones of each day, such as mealtimes, walks and bedtime.

HotspotsMagazine.com | 37

Exercise

Your dog needs daily exercise, just like you. Make your workouts do double duty by taking your dog along for a walk or jog. Just be sure to match your workout level to your pet's abilities; just like humans, dogs need to build up endurance before tackling an extended route. Also be mindful of the terrain and ensure your pet's paws are safe from potential risks like sharp or abrasive surfaces and extreme heat or cold.

Down Time

While dogs need plenty of practical attention and structure, some of the best bonding comes from letting loose and simply enjoying interacting with your pooch. That might mean wrestling with a favorite toy, throwing a ball or just snuggling on the couch with plenty of petting and scratches.

Small Business Spotlight: Wilton’s Manor Doggie Daycare, Resort & Spa

When did the 2 of you move to South Florida?

In 2010 while living in West Hollywood, CA, we searched for a home in WM or OP to be closer to family, we chose a home in OP we couldn't pass up.

When and why did you open Wilton's Manor Doggie Daycare, Resort and Spa?

Pet resorts were getting popular in LA so we brought the idea with us, using the experience we learned from our previous work we did in Los Angeles. Our intention was to provide this service mostly to the LGBTQ+ community like us, who love to spoil their fur-kids, so naturally we chose Wilton Manors for our venture.

Is it everything you expected it to be?

Not exactly, we were originally expecting mostly small breed dogs, so to our surprise, many were larger breeds, so we accommodated our facility better. We didn't offer overnight Boarding until so many of our clients kept asking. So we include Boarding service, and we've been busy with sleepovers ever since.

Wilton's Manor Doggie Daycare, Resort & Spa is located at 2155 N. Dixie Hwy., Wilton Manors, FL 33305 and can be reached by calling (754) 223-4776. It was a pleasure to sit down with the owners Alan and josh for this Hotspots Business Spotlight.

What services do you offer?

We offer Doggie Daycare in our indoor/outdoor open-play areas, Awardwinning Grooming, and Overnight Boarding in comfy Sleeping Pods. We're open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, so we're always around the neighborhood, whether working or frequenting the many other businesses in Wilton Manors.

What separates you from similar businesses?

We're a small business that has employees who have been with us for years. Duvan, Felipe and our groomer Jodie have familiarity with the pups. They feel happy with us when they arrive for grooming or overnight boarding or especially for a playdate. We believe this is something that customers really appreciate.

What does the future hold for Wilton's Manor

Doggie Daycare, Resort and Spa?

More of the same for as long as we can. We love our Island City and plan to retire here.

The cast also includes David Hibbard, Jodi Kimura, Alex Branton, Jonathan Hoover, Sheila Jones, Julie Kavanagh, Ian Liberto, Marquez Linder, Alex Ringler, Bianca RiveraIrions, Lannie Rubio, Neil Starkenberg, Joey Stone, Gina Ward, Lauryn Withnell, and Julia Yameen.

Along with Rob McClure, Aaron Kaburick, David Hibbard, and Jodi Kimura were also members of the Broadway company.

The Chicago Tribune declares Mrs. Doubtfire is “the lovable, big-hearted musical comedy Broadway needs right now” and the Hollywood Reporter calls this “a feel-good, family-friendly musical comedy that delivers.”

Out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard will do anything for his kids. After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father. A hysterical and heartfelt story about holding onto your loved ones against all odds, Mrs. Doubtfire is the musical comedy we need right now – one that proves we're better together.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Neil Starkenberg who is the Dance Captain and is in the ensemble for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing?

I want to say I started in 6th grade and my first musical was “The Music Man,” and I had a solo. I was in love ever since. I was also a big band geek where I played the saxophone and piano. What was your rst professional gig and how much did you get paid?

I want to say I got a stipend of $250 for a 5-week run doing “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum.” When did you know performing would be your career?

I think when I did “Miss Saigon” in my senior year in high school. It was the first time I was recognized for my voice, and I got an award for it. At that point I thought to myself, I think I can make this a career. Other than this show, what has been your favorite role so far?

I have to say Pepper in “Mamma Mia” as it gave me my Broadway Debut. The role let me be me as I am a big goober. My other favorite leading role was Burt in Mary Poppins as it was such a rewarding role, as it brought good Disney magic to such a huge stage. It felt like I was living a childhood dream.

What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but would die to play)?

I would love to play Buddy in “Side Show.”

Vocally its one of the best shows I have ever heard.

Is it intimidating or is there extra pressure being in this show since the movie was so iconic?

It does give it a little extra pressure, but we give you the exact soundbites you love from the movie, but give it a fresh spin. Everything is done with energy, so you feel engaged.

Is it hard being on the road all the time?

Its wonderful actually, as I get to see the different cities and how the different audiences in different states react to the show. Its amazing how we get a standing ovation every night. Describe yourself in 3 words? Goober, energetic, and compassionate. What do you do for fun?

I love to be outdoors, anything with the water or a beach is what I crave so I can't wait for Florida. I also love watching my reality TV Shows; one can't get enough. What should our readers expect from this touring company of, “Mrs. Doubtre”? Your going to expect to laugh, cry, and have your heart strings tugged at. You are going to get everything you want from the movie and more. Its heartfelt and the cast is incredibly talented. I don't know when the last time I worked with such a talented cast. I feel blessed to work with such talented people and I promise the South Florida audiences will love this show!

Arts United’s Jazz Under the Stars

Friday, April 19th at Mickel Park

ArtsUnited and the City of Wilton Manors present the last of four concerts that are "Celebrating Diversity" with the free concert "Jazz Under the Stars" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at Mickel Park, 2675 N.W. 7th Avenue in Wilton Manors.

Bring a blanket, cooler and an open heart to enjoy a night of entertainment with NBC's The Voice contestant Karina Iglesias. Born and raised in Miami to Honduran parents, Iglesias' musical style mimics the unique and cultural sound that surrounded her growing up. She incorporates rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop to deliver performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter. Recently, Iglesias has transformed her original sound by performing contemporary songs to the tune of Jazz.

Known as "Jazz Artist with a Twist," Iglesias began her musical career in 2009 when she was selected to join an 8-person ensemble group called Dolphin's Voices that performed the national anthem at all Miami Dolphin home games. She immersed herself within the Latin entertainment industry and performed with major hit-makers including Franco de Vita, Beatriz Luengo, Alejandra Guzman and Gilberto Santa Rosa, to name a few.

In 2013, Iglesias was a contestant on the fourth season of NBC's #1 hit TV show, “The Voice.” She was originally under Adam Levine's guidance but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic rendition of "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" by James Brown. Iglesias made it to the Top 16 where she was eliminated during the live rounds.

"Closing our "Celebrating Diversity Concert Series" with a talent like Karina Iglesias is a treat for the audience,” said Chuck Williams, president of ArtsUnited, the largest LGBTQ+ visual and performing arts nonprofit organization in Florida.

"Jazz Under the Stars" is free and open to the public. For more information, visit wiltonmanors.gov/427/LIVE-Mickel, call Chuck Williams at 954-326-8219, or email artsunited1@aol.com.
