A Tasty Meal for a Heart-Healthy Summer
Provided By Family Features healthyeating.nhlbi.nih.gov
As you plan your summer fun, think also about adopting healthy habits that can help keep your blood pressure under control. When your blood pressure is consistently high – a condition called hypertension – blood flows through arteries at higher-than-normal pressures. This can cause serious health problems not just for your heart, but also for your blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, and brain.
Hypertension affects all ages, but making small lifestyle changes can go a long way toward prevention. Start with updating your summer menu with delicious, heart-healthy recipes, like Hawaiian Huli Huli Chicken.
Following a heart-healthy eating plan, such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), which emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, low-fat dairy and

healthy oils, can help keep your blood pressure in a healthy range. Developed through research by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), DASH focuses on reducing sodium and limiting foods that are high in saturated fat, including fatty meats, full-fat dairy and tropical oils. Along with adding healthy recipes to your summer menu, NHLBI's The Heart Truth program encourages these healthy habits that can help you control blood pressure:
• Move more: Aim for at least 150 minutes (2 1/2 hours) of physical activity each week. Try keeping yourself on pace each week by shooting for 30 daily minutes of activity over five days.
• Aim for a healthy weight: Research shows adults with overweight and obesity can lower their blood pressure by losing just 35% of their weight. Ask a friend or family member to join a weight loss program with you; social support can help you both stay motivated.
• Manage stress: Reduce stress – which can increase blood pressure – with meditation, relaxing activities or support from a counselor or online group.
• Quit smoking: Smoking damages your heart and blood vessels. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or find other resources available online.
Hawaiian Huli Huli Chicken
Recipe courtesy of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
Servings: 4
• Sauce:
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
2 teaspoons orange juice
1 teaspoon garlic (about 1 clove), minced
1 teaspoon ginger, minced
12 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast (about 2 large breasts), cut into 1inch cubes (about 24 cubes)
1 cup fresh pineapple, diced (about 24 pieces)
8 wooden skewers (6 inches each), soaked in water
• To make sauce: Combine ketchup, soy sauce, honey, orange juice, garlic and ginger; mix well. Separate into two bowls and set aside.
• Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Preheat oven to 350 F.
• Alternately thread three chicken cubes and three pineapple chunks on each skewer.
• Grill skewers 3-5 minutes on each side. Brush or spoon sauce from one bowl onto chicken and pineapple every other minute. Discard remaining sauce from first bowl.
• To prevent chicken from drying out, finish cooking to minimum internal temperature of 165 F in oven. Using clean brush or spoon, coat with sauce from remaining bowl before serving.
Get your summer off to a heart-healthy start by talking to your health care provider about your blood pressure numbers and what they mean. To learn more about heart health and blood pressure, visit hearttruth.gov and find DASH-friendly recipes at healthyeating.nhlbi.nih.gov.

Aboriginal Designer, David Leslie Showcases His Swimwear Collection at Miami Swim Week
By Jeremy Millon
48 | HotspotsMagazine.com
Gay
As a gay aboriginal man, David Leslie's vision for GALI swimwear is to fuse Australia's First Nations culture with sustainable swimwear that tells a story, sparks conversations and creates connections. He recently debuted his collection at Australia Fashion Week. GALI makes its American debut on July 12th at Miami's Flying Solo fashion, part of Miami Swim Week. It will be the first time ever that an Indigenous men's swimwear brand has ever showcased a collection at Flying Solo. As a young aboriginal boy growing up on the Dharug country of Australia, did you imagine you would one day be showcasing your creations on international runways?
Honestly, I was more interested in sports than fashion! I was always playing outdoors, and as a teenager, I loved swimming. It's my love for the water that led me to fashion. I'm a volunteer surf life saver at North
Bondi Beach in Sydney. It was on the beach that I first had the idea to create an indigenous men's swimwear label. GALI is my way to connect my love for the water with my culture. How did you turn your dream into a reality?
David Leslie: I started working on launching GALI from my living room apartment in Bondi Beach. I have a business and marketing background, which has really helped. As GALI has grown, I've gained new skills, like understanding the manufacturing

process, managing stock effectively, and accounting. I've also learned to ask those around me for advice, to absorb information and to capitalize on opportunities. What will you be showing at the Flying Solo fashion show?
The collection we will be showcasing is titled Lukarrara. It's a collaboration with Pauline Napangardi Gallagher, a Warlukurlangu artist. Each design in this collection incorporates bright colors and complex, interwoven patterns to create bold statement pieces.
Can you explain what it was like to grow up gay and Aboriginal?
I've been really lucky to have always felt safe and included in both the LGBTQIA+ and Aboriginal communities. My family and friends were very caring and supportive when I came out. I am naturally a little bit
quiet, so I have always tried to find groups and communities that are fun, safe and inclusive. For me, that's been surf lifesaving and LGBTQIA+ sporting clubs. Did you have access to TV shows like “Project Runway”?
I didn't watch a lot of TV growing up, but nowadays my boyfriend and I love to binge on shows like Project Runway, Making the Cut, RuPaul's Drag Race and Queer Eye. I always love to see who Antoni and Tan are wearing. What's next for GALI Swimwear?
Soon after it's showcase at Miami Swim Week, we will launch the Lukarrara collection for consumers, as well as a new racer cut swim brief. Swim shorts and beach towels are also in development.

Bring On Dessert with Better-for-You Sweets
Provided By Family Features californiaprunes.org
If healthier eating holds a prominent spot on your list of goals, you may feel it's necessary to eliminate some of your sweetest favorites. However, committing to a nutritionally friendly way of life doesn't have to leave desserts by the wayside.
Instead, rethinking nighttime treats with better-for-you ingredients like California Prunes as a quick substitution can make healthier eating easy. As a versatile ingredient that can replace added sugar, fats, and eggs in all kinds of recipes, prunes can also add nutrients important for bone and gut health.
Plus, the copper in prunes inhibits bone breakdown, while boron plays a role in calcium metabolism and polyphenols can help decrease bone breakdown through their antioxidant power. As a fruit that's high in vitamin K, which helps improve calcium balance and promotes bone mineralization, prunes are also a “good gut food,” meaning a single serving (roughly 4-6 prunes) can help support a healthy microbiome.
They're easy to use in recipes that can become favorites in your household such as these Chocolate Energy Balls. Enjoyed as an easy, on-the-go snack, they're a perfect way to refuel for an adventure, recharge after a workout or to simply savor as a healthy snack.
Chocolate lovers rejoice: This rich,
delicious, gluten-free, grain-free Chocolate Covered Prune Fudge Cake is naturally sweetened using prunes instead of added sugar. If brownies are more your style, prunes can also take the place of eggs in these Vegan Brownies for a family-friendly treat that won't wreck your eating plan.

it to new heights: sweetpotatoes. As one of the most versatile vegetables that's easy to add to a variety of recipes for flavor and nutrition enhancement, sweetpotatoes can be a key ingredient in simple or elevated, sweet or savory dishes alike. Whether they're cooked on the stove, baked, microwaved, slow-cooked or grilled to a perfect doneness with a crispy char, they can be an ideal addition to betterfor-you summer meals.
Plus, they're a "diabetes superfood" per the American Diabetes Association because they're rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, all of which are good for overall health. When enjoyed with the skin on, one medium sweet potato contains more than 100% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin A, an important vitamin affecting vision, bone development and immune function. They're also a good source of fiber and rich in potassium.
Another fun fact: the National Sweetpotato Collaborators officially adopted the one-word spelling in 1989 to avoid confusion with equally unique and distinctive potatoes, which are also grown and marketed in the U.S. Sweetpotato is a noun, not an adjective, meaning "sweet" is not a descriptor but part of the actual nomenclature. This is different than other potatoes using adjectives like white, red, or russet to describe an entirely different vegetable.

Plant-Forward Picnic Recipes
Provided By Family Features fyp365.com
Between the welcome warmth of the sun's rays and a nearly universal desire to get outdoors, springtime is a beloved season for enjoying an al fresco meal. Add in fresh produce to heighten the flavors of family favorites and the table is set for a delicious picnic.
Whether your warm-weather adventures take you to a nearby park, a neighbor's patio or simply your own backyard, satisfying those spring cravings often starts with plant-forward dishes. From tomatoes
and onions to mushrooms, Brussels sprouts and other fruits and veggies, you can rely on Mother Nature to give picnic recipes a boost.
For example, these fresh ideas from Aramark's Feed Your Potential program offer easy solutions to take your loved ones outdoors for a meal all can enjoy. As a popular springtime lunch, sandwiches provide the opportunity to customize servings according to each person's preferences.
Foodie Edition 92 | HotspotsMagazine.com
These Portobello Mozzarella Sandwiches are a plant-forward version loaded with grilled mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, pesto mayo, arugula, and a balsamic glaze on ciabatta rolls. For an added touch of freshness, a homemade tomato bruschetta topping combines tomatoes, red onions, basil and more to capitalize on a peak produce season.
No picnic is complete without a side that perfectly complements the main course. For a delicious solution that's fast and easy to make, try a new twist on an al fresco classic: coleslaw. A healthy accompaniment to the sandwiches, this Apricot Brussels Sprouts Coleslaw is an ideal spring dish that calls for less than 10 ingredients and requires simple prep so you can make it fresh before heading out the door.

this summer. From filmmaker Erica Tremblay (director of the 2014 roller derby doc “In the Women”), it's about a queer Native woman who hits the road with her teenage niece as they search for her missing sister. No word on when a wider release will happen, but it's exciting to watch queer filmmakers giving overdue attention to indigenous stories. See it at a film festival near you until then.
Elliot Page is 'Close to You'
Lily Gladstone in going to “Fancy Dance” into your consciousness
We've been on the Lily Gladstone bandwagon since she showed up in Kelly Reichardt's 2016 drama “Certain Women,” leaving an indelible, heartbreaking mark as a lonely Native woman who quietly yearns for a character played by Kristen Stewart. She gathered up year-end critics group prizes for that film and
earned the attention of Martin Scorsese. Then she made a splash at Cannes co-starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Brendan Fraser in Scorsese's latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon” — due in theaters this October — and now her other new film, “Fancy Dance,” is hitting OutFest
Elliot Page has wrapped production in Canada on his next film, “Close to You,” his first starring role in a narrative feature since 2017's remake of “Flatliners.” The Academy Award-nominated actor and star of TV's “The Umbrella Academy” stars alongside Hillary Baack (“Sound of Metal”) in the drama from BAFTA-winning writer-director Dominic

Savage (“I Am…”), and the minimalist plot description conceals more than it reveals. Page plays Sam, a man who experiences a chance encounter with an old friend while on his way home to a family reunion he doesn't want to attend. From that moment on he has to deal with the ramifications of that meeting. We're intrigued, and more than that, we're thrilled to see Page getting back to the big screen where we first met him. While we wait for this one to hit theaters we'll be reading “Pageboy,” his amazing memoir of being queer in Hollywood and summoning the courage to come out as transgender.
'Wham!' takes a bow Netflix figures you're probably taking July 5th off
the music industry. It was a fast and furious four years full of hits that have endured, and the film will include material from the singers' personal archives, never-before-seen footage and never-before-heard interviews, making for a sweet-natured look at the decade that made them — and in the bittersweet case of Michael, the decade that made it all but impossible for him to come out as gay. We've seen the trailer and it looks like a love-fest. Get ready to be bathed in neon-colored nostalgia.
Are Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer writing on edibles?
to recover from July 4th, so they're dropping “Wham!” into your streaming life to keep you at home. The documentary from filmmaker Chris Smith (“FYRE”) chronicles the 1982 formation of the twoteenager pop band created by best friends George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley and their subsequent rise to the top of
We've seen Kristen Stewart hold her own as a low-key comedic MVP when she's hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and though the actor is more often seen in dramatic roles — the charming 2020 Christmas comedy “Happiest Season” notwithstanding — we're always rooting for her to fully break out as a comedy star. So it's very good news to hear that she's writing a comedy vehicle for herself alongside her fiancée Dylan Meyer. In a recent feature in “Interview” magazine, the actor noted that a) she enjoyed an edible before sitting down with interviewer Rachel Sennott (“Shiva Baby”) and that b) she and Meyer were writing a screenplay. Specifically, and this is a quote: “Me and Dylan are writing a movie… It's a stoner girl comedy and it's really fucking stupid. I think you'll like it.” If we were a studio exec and that was the pitch, we'd greenlight it immediately.
After all, Seth Rogen can't do everything himself, and we've spent two decades absorbing the nuances of “Dude, Where's My Car?” If these women take a crack at the genre, we'll roll up to the multiplex in pajamas on opening day.
Romeo San Vicente never loses his car because his driver handles those little details.

Interest in DRAG Shows is on the Rise!
Provided By The Cultural Currents Institute
There is a captivating new study that chronicles an astonishing rise in public interest for drag shows, culminating in record popularity levels in 2023.
Conducted by the Cultural Currents Institute, this research analyzed Google Trends data for the search terms "drag show" and "pride" from 2004 to 2023. The findings indicate an undeniable cultural shift over the last two decades, reflecting a
rapidly expanding interest in, and acceptance of, LGBTQ+ events.
While both terms saw significant growth, the focus on "drag show" is particularly notable. From relatively modest beginnings, interest in drag shows has surged, especially from 2015 onwards - a trend possibly influenced by mainstream media exposure through programs like "RuPaul's Drag Race."
A temporary dip occurred in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the resilience of this cultural phenomenon is evidenced by the sharp recovery and continued growth in 2021 and beyond. The study culminates with "drag show" hitting an all-time high search volume in March 2023, signaling an interest level that has never been seen before.
The trajectory of these terms' points to a greater societal acceptance and interest in LGBTQ+ culture in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic, despite its many challenges, did not stall this trend, and it may have even accelerated the digital discovery of these cultural expressions.
These compelling findings offer an insightful perspective into our evolving cultural landscape and the increasing prominence of drag shows in American society.

By Andreus Quinones
Dear Andreus,
I have a problem with my husband's best friend. He is at our house almost every other day, and he is rude and disrespectful. My husband is constantly making excuses for him, saying that he is harmless and has an offbeat sense of humor. I have told my husband how I feel about him and have been struggling with telling him that I don't want his best friend in our house. Is it too extreme a request to ask that they hangout elsewhere? What should I do?
Sincerely,
Calvin S.
Dear Calvin,
This is a difficult scenario, especially for your husband who will likely feel conflicted with such a strong request. Talk to your husband, share your thoughts in depth with him. Explain to him why you
don't like his best friend, and maybe ask that he lessen the visits. It might be a bit much to ask for his friend not to come over at all. If that is what you wish for the result, you will likely have to ease up on the idea or come to some sort of compromise. But do not make your husband feel as if he must choose between the two of you. That never turns out well.
Dear Andreus,
My boyfriend has been lying to me, and I don't know if I can take it anymore. I came home early from work one day and saw him having sex with the pool guy in our tool shed in the backyard. He didn't see me and doesn't know that I'm aware that he cheated. However, I have asked him several times if he has been spending time at all with the pool guy. So now, not only have I seen him having sex with someone else, I've got even deeper trust issues because he has been lying to me. At the same time, I don't wanna lose him. Please help!!!
Sincerely,
Gordon P.
Dear Gordon,
I think you know the truth; you are just trying to avoid it. You say that you don't want to lose him, but you may already have lost him. If he is not respecting your relationship by cheating, and lying – this is an issue of love, commitment, honesty, and integrity. What you must ask yourself, is if you are willing to live this way. The behavior is not likely to change and if it is not the pool guy, it will likely be someone else. So, if you are looking for someone to be faithful and true – you might need to cut your losses.
