Peak Fitness, A New Way to Get in Shape!

Interview with Owner Chris Caputo

It seems like technology has made everything in our life easier (i.e. everything can get delivered right to your door, including groceries) except for getting fit... until now! Peak Fitness' patent-pending Peak Power Suit delivers a highly effective, low impact workout that fits into your schedule and feels great!

Peak Fitness opened its door a few months back and I thought it would be a good time to sit down with owner and Wilton Manors commissioner Chris Caputo, for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

What made you decide to open Peak Fitness?

I'm a tech-savvy entrepreneur with a love for fitness, so when I set my sights on an Iron Man competition but was strapped for time to train, Body20's EMS personal training came in clutch! While the results I was getting during 1 on 1 training at Body20 kept me motivated, I missed the rush I got from working out with others in a HIIT group class. I saw an opportunity to offer EMS technology in a HIIT-style group formatultimately making it easier and more fun than ever to get fit!

Do I already have to be in shape to use the technology? Whether they are already shredded or have never set foot in the gym, anyone can use Peak's EMS Power Suits! The intensity level is personalized for each individual's ability.

24 | HotspotsMagazine.com

What's the difference between Peak and a regular gym?

With EMS, we're working all of your muscles at once so you can achieve the same results in just 20 minutes as a traditional gym session lasting 90+ minutes. What does muscles being stimulated mean?

FDA-cleared EMS therapy creates steady electric impulses that stimulate muscle contractions, much like a TENS-unit at the chiropractor. You experience 150 times more muscle-building contractions with EMS compared to the gym. How did you find your trainers?

Our 5 trainers and studio manager David were already wowed by the amazing results they achieved at Peak Fitness, so when they heard about us hiring - their passion lit up! Now here we are with an excited bunch ready to make a difference. What made you open in the building that you are in?

My tech agency, Development Partners, is actually located in the same building upstairs! I am really lucky we scored the space we did-- as City Commissioner here in Wilton Manors, I'm aware of how little open retail space we actually have. Is it very expensive to join Peak Fitness?

Joining Peak isn't expensive at all! We offer monthly memberships from $99/mo-$299/mo or packages of classes

ranging from $20-35/ea. The best deal is definitely our 60 Day Get Fit Free program, though. We guarantee you'll lose at least 5% body fat and add muscle and you get to workout for 2 months completely free as long as you commit to coming 3 times a week. We recommend everyone sign up for a free 3 class pass at ReachPeakFitness.com and then talk to a member of our team to see what makes the most sense based on their personal goals.

>> Peak Fitness is located at 1471 NE 26th Street, Suite 102 in Wilton Manors. For more information, check out their website at: reachpeakfitness.com.

benefit now infamously known as Beach '79.

Joli left the stage a star, becoming a media darling who appeared in all the popular publications and on all the hot TV shows of the day. “Come to Me” became a smash hit that sold three million copies globally, rose to number one on disco charts around the world, and reached number 15 on Billboard magazine's pop chart.

43 years later France is still traveling al lover the world singing, and as she is about to come make two appearances in South Florida, I thought it appropriate to sit down with the icon for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

How did singing begin for you or did you come out of the womb singing?

Singing started when I cried when I was born...LOL. The first time my grandmother (who was an opera singer) heard me cry she looked at my mom and said your daughter is going to be a singer. I think I started singing before I started talking. What was your first professional gig?

I think I was 10 years old, and it was a benefit. I think I got $50, and I thought it was a lot of money. It was at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.

When did you know singing would be your career?

I was 4 when I think I knew. I recorded 4 songs at that age at RCA Victor studios as a gift for my aunt. I don't remember a day in my life where singing wasn't a part of it. You performed at some iconic places and events including Studio 54, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Saint and many more. How did that feel?

It felt surreal. I didn't know what was happening to me. And I would tell my mom to pinch me as it was happening so fast. I didn't know what to do with my emotions, it was overwhelming, and it was a dream come true. I was 16 years old and traveling the world. Being at Studio 54 for the first time was mind blowing. Speaking of traveling the world. Do you have a favorite city or venue?

My favorite venue is Radio City Music Hall as I remember doing a whole week there when I was opening for the commodores. My favorite city is New York, which is my second home. There is not another place like NYC!

In 2012 you produced and recorded a dance version of Leonard Cohen's classic “Hallelujah,” how did that come about?

When my father passed, I sang “Hallelujah” at his funeral and I don't know where it

came from, but I felt a light on me at the church, and I had a flash that I should do a dance version of the song. Shortly after that, I decided to produce it. I produced the song for me, and I didn't worry whether it was going to be successful or not. I am so thankful it was!

Other than “Come to Me” do you have a favorite song?

If you mean one of mine, yes I do, its: “Gonna Get Over You,” is probably the closest song to me. R&B was always something I loved to do. My favorite song right now is Sam Smiths Unholy, and one of my top all-time favorite songs is West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys. Describe yourself in 3 words?

Authentic, Lover, and Obsessive. What do you do for fun?

I paint, I write music all the time in my head and in the studio. I golf in the summer and play with my beautiful puppy. What should our readers expect from your performance at Hunters on Sunday Jan 22 and

from your performance at “A Night At The Disco: Where The Stars Shine”?

To be in top shape vocally, some love and of course for me to sing my hit records and to be fully in the moment. In addition, I always have fun, and I will reminisce with the crowd.

Is there anything I didn't ask you that you want to talk about?

Yes, I want your readers to know that one of the reasons I am still doing this after all these years is because of the fans and their loyalty. My fans are so very important to me. I wish I could take them all home with me.

>> For more information on France, you can follow her fan page on facebook. To purchase tickets for “A Night at the Disco, Where The Stars Shine” go to Parkerplayhouse.com. To see France, perform at Hunters Nightclub, get there early as I am sure the club will be packed!

World AIDS Museum & Hunters Nightclub

Proudly Present Red Dress, Dress Red Gala

Sat, Feb. 4th

World AIDS Museum and Educational Center & Hunters Nightclub proudly present Red Dress, Dress Red Gala on February 4, at the beautiful Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA). This historic, national dance party comes to South Florida for the first time: Red Dress, Dress Red Gala brings awareness to the HIV epidemic, raises funds for the Museum, and fosters community. WAM is excited to continue this rich tradition as a signature fundraiser in support of its Florida AIDS Walk team.

54 | HotspotsMagazine.com
Terry Dyer >>>>

Leading up to Pride of the Americas 2023 festivities, this party includes live music and dancing, hors d'oeuvres, a meet & greet with RuPaul's Drag Race Star, Trinity K. Bonet, complimentary beverages, live entertainment, and tons of surprises! The night concludes with an after party at Hunters Nightclub.

I thought it a good time to sit down with the Executive Director of the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center, Terry Dyer, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

You moved to south Florida 3 ½ years ago, what made you relocate here?

I relocated here for with one of my previous employers in the private aviation field. We purchased another company here in Fort Lauderdale and moved our offices to South Florida.

Nine months ago, you became the ED of WAM. How did that happen and are you excited about this new position?

I am extremely excited. The organization and the mission align with my personal story and my advocacy work for HIV/AIDS education. I was one of the keynote speakers at the 2021 World AIDS Day event, and based on that speech the board president approached me about the ED position at WAM, which I was very honored to accept.

How has your first nine months been?

It's been incredible, exciting, and absolutely overwhelming all at the same time. The role has me very busy and there are so many new projects to expand our work and to collaborate with other organizations on a national scale. I really feel as though the sky is the limit for our work and where we want to go as an organization.

Other than the gala, which we will get to in a minute, what is new at WAM?

We are working on educational programming with different organizations across the country, as well as a documentary project with a global

“The organization and the mission align with my personal story and my advocacy work for HIV/AIDS education.”

organization based in London. We are also working on a project to take our exhibits on the road; essentially our exhibits will go on tour. This is projected to start in Provincetown in the summer. How did you decide to bring the Red Gala to South Florida?

Our ogranization did not traditionally produce an annual gala. I thought changing this would be crucial to the success of our organization. It also made sense since as the event is deeply rooted in the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS space. This gala will also take the visibility of our organization to a national level.

What should South Florida expect from the Red Gala?

Attendees should expect a massive dance party with incredible music by DJ Edtalks. The VIP experience will include upscale food provided by famous caterers The Two Todd's (formerly of the White House) and beverage provided by Hunters Nightclub and Tito's. It will also include live entertainment from Broadway star Anne Steele, Season 10 American Idol contestant Matthew Darren, South Florida legend LeNora Jaye, and the famous Synergy Twins. The event will be hosted by RuPaul's Drag Race and All-Stars contestant Trinity K. Bonet. VIP guests will have the opportunity for a meet and greet along with a pic with Trinity. The overall event will also include live art, and exhibitions, fashions by Project Runway designers and many more surprises. To purchase tickets to Red Dress, Dress

Red Gala is on Saturday, February 4, go to rddrgala.eventbrite.com.

General admission tickets, which starts at 8pm, are $100 and include live entertainment, dancing, complimentary beverages, and valet or self-parking. VIP tickets, which are $250, starts at 6:30pm, include all the above plus an exclusive reception to include meet and greet with Trinity, Hors d'oeuvres, access to VIP seating and specialty beverage, Valet parking, and an optional shuttle bus from Hunters Nightclub.

Recipes

Moist Homestyle Meatloaf

2 lbs. of ground beef

2 cups of panko breadcrumbs

1 egg (beaten)

1 teaspoon of sea salt or kosher salt

1 teaspoon of cracked black pepper

2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce

1 can of tomato sauce (15 oz)

¼ cup of milk

1 tablespoon of minced garlic

½ medium white onion minced

3 tablespoons of Ketchup

2 tablespoons of sour cream

Preheat oven to 350° F. Add all ingredients together, with only ½ the can of tomato sauce, and minus the ketchup. Make sure to thoroughly combine, but do not over work the meat, as it will be tougher the more you mix it. Place the meat mixture into a 5 x 9 loaf pan and bake for 40 minutes. Increase the temperature to 400° F, baking for another 15 minutes. Mix the ketchup and remaining tomato sauce and pour over top of the meatloaf. Bake for another 10-12 minutes. Allow the meatloaf to rest for about 20 minutes before attempting to dislodge and slice. It is even better if done a day ahead and refrigerated. Enjoy!

All-Women Art Exhibit Comes to Wilton Manors Calling All Women Artists!

In honor of Women's History Month, a time to celebrate the power of women in our families and communities, The Hotspots! Happening Out Art Gallery with Dennis Dean is excited to partner with ArtsUnited to present “The Women: Power Imagined,” A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Women Art and Artists developed and powered by an allwomen planning committee.

The purpose behind “The Women: Power Imagined” is to amplify new and emerging women artists and art in an LGBTQ+ friendly environment, as well as bringing more visibility to women in the arts. “The arts are still sadly biased toward men. Although great strides have been made, more is needed for women to be fully recognized and integrated as equals to their male counterparts in the arts. This exhibit, occurring during

90 | HotspotsMagazine.com

International Women's month, is an opportunity to further these efforts by exclusively showcasing, celebrating, honoring and acknowledging the essential contribution of and by The Women," commented Rosaria Vigoritto, Artist and Board Member at ArtsUnited.

The exhibit will showcase the talents of women artists and art throughout the month of March with two events open to the public: the Opening Reception on Saturday, March 4th from 6 to 9pm and the Artists Showcase on Sunday, March 19th from 5 to 8pm at the Gallery's new location at 2401 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors.

“’The Women: Power Imagined’ is a moment in time to reflect, celebrate, and uplift those among us who lead our communities, tell our stories, promote healing, and are too often made invisible. Art gives us the opportunities to confront the present and imagine new realities,” said Jasmen Rogers, Marketing & Events Coordinator at the Gall ery.

Calling All Women Artists

Are you a stablished or new artist? The Hotspots! Happening Out Art Gallery with Dennis Dean and ArtsUnited encourage women artists of all experiences to submit art that best reflect the holistic power of women. Submissions are open to painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor, and alcohol inks), photography, 3D/Sculpture, mixed media, drawing, and digital/graphic arts. While depictions of nudity are welcome and accepted, no pornographic materials or materials depicting penetrative sexual acts will be accepted.

If selected as an artist to display your work, your art pieces must stay on display for the entire month of the exhibition (March 1-25, 2023). This exhibit will be selected, curated, and juried by women leaders in the South Florida art world. You could win a cash prize, too!

Be A Part of This Celebration

The Hotspots! Happening Out Art Gallery with Dennis Dean and ArtsUnited also encourage women artists and women art lovers to volunteer and/or donate your time and talent to this celebration. Sponsorship opportunities in different levels are available to be a partner in this endeavor.

BEAT STRESS BEFORE IT BEATS YOU

Does life seem like an overwhelming chore that brings you little joy, but plenty of aggravation and grief? You are probably one of the millions of people who have let stress take control of your life. If you struggle with excessive fatigue, stomach upset, headaches, muscle tension, and poor sleep then you may be one of the 77% of all Americans who

suffer from physical symptoms of stress. Nearly 73% of Americans experience psychological difficulties related to stress, including nightmares, panic attacks, and depression. Work, home, relationships, and other daily stresses can take their toll on you, but there are practical, easy, and effective steps you can take.

Yes, stress is a fact of life, just make sure it

100 | HotspotsMagazine.com

doesn't take precedence over everything else. Manage it by thinking about what brings you joy and take measures to allow more of it into your life. A new work out, a coffee break with a supportive friend, having a home cooked meal at home with your boyfriend or husband, are all great ways to enhance your life. Life is too short to skimp on the experiences that bring genuine joy to your heart. On the flip side, reflect upon what you need less of in your life, so you can become more peaceful. Less time nursing hangovers, curtailing useless, time- consuming meetings, are all things you can happily kick to the curb.

Don't start off too grand. You can't simplify your life and manage stress overnight. Take baby steps. Take a walk on the beach instead of blowing-up when friends or family members upset you. If you feel overwhelmed on the job by uncontrollable forces, choose one drawer of a file cabinet and reorganize it. Try

some simple self-care techniques to calm and relax you. Have a cup of hot tea or take a whiff of essential lavender or peppermint oil to soothe your frayed nerves. When you feel like you're going to “lose it”, change the rhythm of your breathing by inhaling deeply, relaxing your shoulders, and exhaling slowly. Breathe deeply five or six times until you regain composure.

Always make room for exercise. Physical activity, whether it's walking the dog or taking a group fitness class can make you feel more creative, alive, and better about life in general. Working out, doing cardio, playing sports are dynamite ways to build a great body, blow off steam and burn calories!

Exercise is the only real fountain of youth available and it's here for everyone. Don't forget to stay mentally fit by working out your mind. Reading, travel, bridge, and crossword puzzles can keep those wheels turning and sharp as you tune out needless stress and anxiety that age you.

No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics Makes Its TV Debut on PBS This January

From Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Vivian Kleiman (“Color Adjustment”) comes an in-depth look at the evolution of queer comics, starting in the 1970s when LGBTQ+ stories were not in popular culture.

Featuring interviews with Alison Bechdel (“Dykes to Watch Out For”), Jennifer Camper (“Rude Girls and Dangerous Women”), Howard Cruse (“Wendel,” “Stuck Rubber Baby”), Rupert Kinnard (“B.B. and

Alison Bechdel

the Diva,” “Cathartic Comics”) and Mary Wings (“Come Out Comix”) and other queer comics artists, “No Straight Lines” tells the story of five scrappy and pioneering cartoonists who depicted everything from the AIDS crisis, coming out, and same-sex marriage, to themes of race, gender and disability.

These pioneering queer artists use comics as a tool for social change and queer acceptance. They brought the queer experience to life in a changing world, showcasing the everyday pursuits of love, sex, and community through a humorous and artful lens, and pushing what was once a marginalized underground scene into the mainstream. They tackled the humor in queer lives in a changing world, and the everyday pursuits of love, sex, and community. Their work is funny, smart, and profound, and provides a unique, uncensored window into LGBTQ lives from the 1970s onward, beginning at a time in which there was no other genuine queer storytelling in popular culture. Equally engaging are their personal journeys, as they, against all odds, helped build a queer comics underground that has been able to grow and evolve in remarkable ways.

In the documentary, artist interviews alongside their work, are interwoven with stories of landmark moments in LGBTQ+ history—from the Stonewall Riots to the AIDS epidemic and mor e. Taken together, it's the story of how the queer comics scene shed light on the experiences of generations in a

community previously underrepresented in the media and popular culture.

“'No Straight Lines' is the story of a DIY art form—often considered junk food for kids—that over the past 50 years has been used by queer artists as a powerful medium to represent our lives,” said Kleiman. “More than a chronology of milestone events, I wanted to create an intergenerational story of our emergence from rejection to acceptance and help LGBTQI youth feel safe.”

Heralded as “enjoyable, “informative,” and “quietly powerful” by the Los Angeles Times, and “entertaining and enlightening” by CBS News, “No Straight Lines” will make its television debut on PBS's Emmy Awardwinning documentary anthology series Independent Lens on January 23, 2023 at 10pm ET. The film will also be available to stream on the PBS Video app. See more at nostraightlinesthefilm.com.

Considered the founding mama of queer comics, at 23 years old Mary Wings created “Come Out Comix” in 1973.

Whitney Houston's musical legacy is brought to life in this critically acclaimed tribute show described as “mind-blowingly spot on”.

Be stunned by the breathtaking vocals of Belinda Davids – a RiSA chart-topping artist in her home country of South Africawho has performed alongside the likes of

114 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole and Monica and featured on Fox TV's 'Showtime at the Apollo', 'Britain's Got Talent' and BBC1 TV's 'Even Better Than the Real Thing'.

With the accompaniment of a live band, backing vocalists and choreographed dancers, plus state-of-the-art sound, lighting, vision, and theatrical effects, this is a beautifully crafted tribute to one of the world's most revered singers.

The two-hour production will fill you with joy, nostalgia, and wonderment as it takes you on a heartfelt journey through Houston's greatest hits including: “I Will

Always Love You,”' “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,“ “'How Will I Know,” “One Moment in Time,” “I Have Nothing,” “'Run to You,” “Didn't We Almost Have It All,” “Greatest Love of All,” “I'm Every Woman,” “Queen of the Night,” “Exhale (Shoop Shoop), “ “Million Dollar Bil”' and more.

This special concert event will leave audiences wanting more and talking about it for years to come. Don't miss the chance to experience it for yourself.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Belinda for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

How did singing begin for you or did you come out of the womb singing?

I came out of the womb singing. As far back as I can remember I would wake up singing. When did Whitney and her music become important to you?

When I was 8 years old, the first time I heard her. I realized at that age I could sing just like her. It was the connection to my dreams. What was your first professional gig?

I remember my first band I performed with was a jazz band and they were called “Maiden Voyage.” I was 14 or 15 and over the weekend I earned 60 rand (equivalent of $5 US Dollars). At the time I thought that was

a lot of money. When did you know singing would be your career?

When I left the country for the first time when I was in my early 20's. It was the first contract I signed, and it was for a hotel in Hong Kong. That's when I decided I must take care of myself and my voice as this is something that is going to carry me for the rest of my life.

You

There are so many that stand out, but the first one that popped into my head is the London Palladium. I performed there the week before Madonna was supposed to play there and I had a sold-out show. The other one is the Apollo in NYC. Those are my two favorites.

Do you have a favorite Whitney song and why? I don't have a favorite, but on the album “Im Your Baby Tonight” there is a song called “Lover for Life” and I can listen to that song all the time. I also love “Just the Lonely Talking Again,” and “Heartbreak Hotel,” and then there are so many more. I just can't decide.

Tell me about your experience on Britain's Got Talent?

One of the most surreal experiences of my life as it was during the pandemic. The rules and protocol were incredible. The audition was great, and it was really nerve wrecking. Becoming a semi finalist was insane. Describe yourself in 3 words?

Homey, perfectionist, and chef. What do you do for fun?

I love to run long distance; I also love to

swim, and I love the ocean. Because I travel so much, I try to do these things when I am home. I am also a big foodie! My new hobby is my puppy Golden Retriever. What should our readers expect from “The Greatest Love of All?”

If there is one thing that people need to know, this is not a musical. It's a concert as if Whitney was on stage. We managed to pick songs from the number one hits from the beginning to the end of her career, and I promise everyone will have fun in this show. My whole point of doing this show is to take people back to when they first heard Whitney. I am paying tribute to m y idol!

Dear Andreus,

I am currently dating a guy. I have tried to end it before, but it doesn't seem to stick. Every where I go, he seems to appear, and he calls and texts me constantly wanting to know where I am and what I am doing at all times. I can't seem to get any private time since meeting him, and the times that I have tried to pull away, results in some type of dramatic production on his part. I can't take it anymore!

What should I do?

Sincerely, Griffin S. Dear Griffin,

I think you already know that answer to this. Obviously, the longer you allow this to go on, the worse it's going to get. You have to face this, say how you feel - and mean it. If you don't want to go further in this relationship, then end it. These behaviors are unhealthy. Whether or not he is aware of that, is not the point. You are bothered, and you are making allowances for something that makes you uncomfortable, because he gets upset of dramatic if you pull away. Remember, we teach people how to treat us but what we allow, and what we reinforce. I hope that helps.

Dear Andreus, I have been with my boyfriend for 10 years, but I am realizing that we have very little in common. We don't particularly like the same things , and we don't really communicate well. He has anxiety, so doesn't like social situations, where I am a social butterfly. Also, he gets easily agitated, and ends up snapping at me a lot for no reason. Lastly, he never

takes responsibility for anything, and although we both work, he never helps around the house or anything. I haven't left because we have been together for so long, but I just can' t take it anymore. I just don't know what to do. Sincerely, Frasier

Dear Frasier,

If you have been in this relationship for this long, you clearly love him. Even though you may not have much in common, there was something there in the beginning that brought you together. Take some time to think about what that was, and then weigh out the pros and cons in your relationship. Write those things down and ask him to do the same. Compare notes and think about where there might be room for change or improvement. It's a start. I would also suggest seeking individual and/or couple's therapy. It might give you a new outlook on things.
