On Saturday night, October 28, the Manor Complex presented “Halloween Ends” with celebrity DJ Nina Flowers in the Empire Room, and Noche Latina Saturdays was in the Epic Ballroom and presented “Beetlejuice” with their resident DJ Duniel.

The night featured performances by Daisy Deadpetals, Velvet Lenore, Oscar Novva and some fabulous dancers. All the rooms were super packed till the lights came on.

On Halloween night in addition to all the bars and clubs being busy, The Pride Center at Equality Park presented Wicked Manors, the largest Gay Halloween festival in Florida which took place up and down the drive from 6-11pm. Once again, the drive was busy with Halloween partygoers all night! (Look at the double picture page this issue) On Thursday, November 3, The GLBX (Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange) of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce presented its fourth annual Business Community Ally (BCA) Awards at Galleria Fort Lauderdale. This event recognized and highlighted individuals and corporate entities that are successfully doing business with the LGBT+ community, defining and implementing diversity and inclusion policies and/or supporting worthy related causes.

November 5, The South Florida Men's Wellness Conference took place.

Later in the night, on November 4, the Fort Lauderdale International Film festival (Fliff) held its opening night film at Hardrock Hollywood. The movie was the southeast premiere of “American Dreamer” which featured a red-carpet event. Seen there was the one and only Vanilla Ice.

On Saturday, November 5, Hotspots/Happening Out Art Gallery with Dennis Dean presented their November opening reception which featured new art and live models featuring vintage Broadway Wardrobe from Showbiz Costume Gallery. The artists featured were Chuck Prescott, Teresa Korber, Franco Sotillo, Sherman Yee and Michael Craft, Heather Neiman, Diane Lublinski and Dennis Dean.

Later that night The Ramrod featured their monthly (first Saturday of the month) Pig Dance, and as usual all the men were out to play.

On Sunday night, in our sister city in Tampa, Marshall Welch and Amy Demilo presented the annual Miss Heart of Florida, and Heat of Florida Newcomer pageants. Congrats to the new court Kennedy Davenport and Mulanie Delaquax.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Yana Perrault who plays two characters, Peggy and Maria, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing?

Well, my parents are really theatrical, and they met in the theater. My sister is a dancer.

So, performing has always just been around me, and then I started local community theater around 12 or 13 and did that through high school.

What was your first professional gig?

I left college after majoring in musical theater and doing acting workshops. Soon after that I booked Tim Rice's "From Here to Eternity."

When did you know performing would be your career?

All my interests have always focused on performing even from a young age. In addition to performing on stage, I'm also getting ready to release a single and posting music online. The single is called "Drama Queen." It's an alternative R&B track about being hard to love.

Hamilton premiered in 2015 and is already iconic, is there extra pressure performing in this show?

Pandemic I feel like the show hits differently in 2022. The fact that we get to still do live theatre is a good thing. It definitely feels special.

You play two characters, how easy or hard is it to switch personas?

The difficulty really depends on the day.

Theater has been a great outlet for an array of emotions. In that sense sometimes it feels easy to switch between the two.

Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?

The title of the role was young prostitute or something like whore number four in Les Mis [laughs].

What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?

I really think about what if I could go on [stage] in Hamilton as Lafayette Jefferson?

My dream is to take over all the guy roles in Hamilton.

What should our readers expect from this touring company of "Hamilton"?

Our tour brings a lot of passion when performing Hamilton. We wear our heart on our sleeves when we perform. I hope the South Florida audience can feel our passion.

But I want to look back and feel happy that this is the life I created.

How well do you and your cast mates get along?

We lovingly drive each other crazy, but it is like a big family. After the Pandemic, it's really special that we all ended up together in Hamilton.

The International Transgender Day of Visibility is March 31st. It has been globally recognized since 2009.

The International Transgender Day of Remembrance, November 20th, more commonly referred to as TDOR, recognizes, remembers, and says out loud the names of our Trans and Gender Diverse or (TGD) Siblings who have lost their lives to hate crimes the current year—honoring the lives taken for living and being their authentic selves. In 2021 alone 375 of our global TGD siblings were murdered, the vast majority being trans women of color, and 70% of them in Central and South America alone.

TDOR was started in 1999 in honor of a trans woman named Rita Hester, who was murdered in Boston, Massachusetts. Today TDOR is recognized worldwide.

In 2008 "The Trans Murder Report" started keeping an accurate track of the murders, and many countries participate in the data collecting.

November, Transgender Awareness Month

In 2017 the Trump administration launched an unprecedented attack on the trans community, from twittering new laws to taking the word off the

Whitehouse website and banning it from being used. To the best of my knowledge, FewayHealth was the first to declare the entire month of November as Transgender Awareness Month In 2018.

(Fenway Health is an LGBTQIA health care, research, and advocacy organization founded by Northeastern University students and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.). In 2018 the city of San Francisco launched an entire month of events following suit. And their sf.gov website said, "Here in San Francisco, we celebrate Transgender Awareness Month to highlight the way that the community and the city are working together to advance equity for trans and gender nonconforming communities. This is also a time to ground ourselves in our observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day where we pay respect to the lives of the predominantly Black transgender women, we have lost to anti-trans violence. As transgender people are under attack across the country San Francisco will not rest until everyone in our community is thriving and has a safe place to call home."

Stop shoving it down my throats

This is what I often hear from my relatives and loved ones who are not quite aligned with my moral and political values. Simply existing and living authentically is not shoving it down anyone's throat.

However, Visibility Matters, and it is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Humans. Fear things they do not understand. That is fundamental human nature; why do you act like that or look like that, or smell like that? I don't get it. It is a standard "Go To" response to something we feel is out of the norm.

However, through exposure, we become desensitized. Through these days of visibility and awareness, we gain a sense of normalcy, and hopefully, that will come with some empathy, sympathy, and understanding.

Visibility Matters because you cannot remember what you cannot see. As a child, while I was growing up, other than "Fresh Prince" and "The Cosby's," our TV didn't include people of color. Until "Ellen" and "Will and Grace," our TV didn't have LGBTQIA folx. Seeing, laughing, and enjoying these programs are vital to let the world know that not every human looks like the Skinny, Beautiful, Heteronormative, Cisnormative, and don't forget Caucasian families that we are used watching and looking up to. We must bring visibility to the unknown and unseen communities like the Trans community. As a human family, we look, act, and love in a very colorful and beautiful way, which deserves representation and visibility.

However, the most important reason I believe transgender visibility truly matters is

that children are our future. Our young people need to know that they are not alone. Whatever they are dealing with, sexual orientation or gender identity, for example. They need to know that other humans look, act, talk, love, and express their gender in the same way they do. It's OK to be different, it's OK to be unique, and it's OK to be you. Visibility reduces selfharm and suicidal ideation, and it also reduces the fear of the unknown and therefore reduces bullying. Transgender Awareness Month is an opportunity of providing a place where those not in our community can recognize our existence.

They can recognize the beautiful greatness of Trans and Gender Diverse people. It's a reminder that we are a part of your families, your friends and neighbors, your coworkers, your loved ones, your partners, and fellow travelers of this earth. It is an opportunity to put positive representation on TV and Print platforms so that others can see and learn. Receiving positive messages does a tremendous amount of good for one's mental health, self-esteem, and suicidal ideation. Look, they are just like me! I'm not the only one.

received the Best Actress Academy Award??

It is OK to celebrate our differences, and it is OK to love yourself and live authentically, whatever that means to you. Yes, even if it means your brain is a different gender than your assigned sex at birth. And that your brain received a different amount of testosterone in the 3rd trimester than your Tubular (penis/clitoris) received in the 2nd trimester.

Trans people have existed for centuries; you can trace trans artifacts back to 7,000 BD. However, for our safety, most of us were "Stealth" or what gays would understand as "in the closet." Living under the radar without the attention or distraction of others, living regular everyday lives undetected. Until many, like transgender activist Janet Mock for example, after living stealth for years, came out as trans to help bring awareness.

We are not scary, and we are not something to be afraid of. We Trans and Gender Diverse individuals are beautiful, talented, intelligent, and successful. It is OK to be TransFabulous, and it is OK to be visible.

Equality Garden Clubs Presents the 9th Annual Tropical Plant Fair Nov. 19th & Nov. 20th

The Equality Garden Club of Wilton Manors is pleased to announce this year's two-day outdoor Tropical Plant Fair, Saturday, Nov. 19 (9-5pm) Sunday, Nov 20 (9-3pm), located in Richardson Park and Nature Preserve, 1937 Wilton Drive.

Due to the increased demand and unprecedented success of last year, the fair this year will include many of the previous vendors and several new ones. 52 booths will include orchids, floral arrangements, Bonsai and Kokodamas and several Florida growing Nurseries including Jesse Durko.

Richardson Park is a lovely, less groomed Nature Preserve, showcasing and explaining much of what grows naturally with the tidal water of the canals. It does not allow pets to be brought into the park.

It is essential that all participants respect the special quality of the park and its inhabitants, at the same time enjoying the tranquility and beauty of this location within the city. This summer the EGC planted almost 600 native orchids in the trees of the park.

Screen diva, meet opera diva: it's happening now

that Angelina Jolie has signed on to play legendary opera singer Maria Callas.

Pablo Larrain, the acclaimed Chilean filmmaker whose recent biopics of famous women — “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman, and “Spencer,” starring Kristen Stewart — earned both actors Oscar nominations for their performances will direct yet another exploration of a famous (and occasionally famously troubled) woman's life. Though Callas' life story has been told in the documentary, “Maria by Callas,” this narrative version is a passion project for the opera-loving Larrain, and as for Jolie, Callas — the GreekAmerican powerhouse whose vocal style became immediately recognizable and cemented her place in 20th-century opera history — is the perfect larger-than-life role for her to step into.

Meanwhile, for older generations of gay men, Callas was also an icon, so the queer stars are in alignment for this project.

WORK THOSE PECS AND POUND THAT CHEST!

Your pectoral muscles, also known as your chest muscles, play a crucial role in just about every move you make - from pushing and shoving, to pulling and lifting. Every sport from badminton to wrestling requires you to recruit those pecs into action.

Here's a pec pounding routine that will add size, strength, and denition to those awesome pectoral muscles. Go for 3-4 sets of eight to twelve repetitions of each

exercise and you'll see and feel the difference in no time!

Barbell Bench Presses: (for mass and strength) Lie on a at bench with your feet on the oor and grasp the barbell with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Lift the bar off the rack and slowly lower it to mid-chest level. Try not to let your elbows go down much past 90 degrees since this can unduly irritate your rotator cuff muscles.

Pause, and then drive the bar upward until your arms are almost locked. Flat bench chest presses can also be performed effectively holding a dumbbell in each hand rather than a barbell.

Incline Dumbbell Presses: (especially for upper chest) Lie on an incline bench set at a 15–30-degree incline. Hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing forward, knuckles aimed at the ceiling.

Slowly lower the dumbbells to the sides of your chest until you feel a nice stretch in your pecs. Pause, then drive the dumbbells straight upward until your arms are nearly locked.

Parallel Bar Dips: (mass, denition, and strength) Find the parallel bars in the gym.

Support yourself with your arms straight and torso hanging down from your shoulders.

Here are some pointers to help you maximize that chest workout. First, free weight compound exercises like the ve mentioned above are the most efficient ways to build strength and bulk. Second, eat to grow when you're lifting; feed those muscles with quality protein. Lastly, for best results, work chest 2x/ week with 3 days rest between your chest workouts.

Dumbbell Flies: (for pec denition) Lie on a weight bench set at a 15-30-degree incline. Hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing inward, knuckles pointed toward the ceiling. Keeping your arms slightly bent, slowly lower the dumbbells in an arcing notion until your upper arms are parallel to the oor. Return to the top of the motion.

Cable Crossover Flies: (for pec denition) Stand in the middle of the cable apparatus with feet slightly spread, your body tilted slightly forward, and elbows slightly bent.

Grasp the handles with arms spread; you should feel a stretch across your chest.

Out Filmmaker Omar Salas Zamora Discusses His New Series, “Adam In Fragments,” Streaming this Month on Dekkoo

In the provocative, gritty drama, Adam in Fragments, a young man returns to his former life as a sex worker where he quickly re-engages with his seedy and often dangerous male clients. All appears status quo until his urge to guide a young and naïve aspiring adult film starlet and protect her from their terrorizing handler, Felix, triggers a series of

events that send violent ripples through the Los Angeles underground sex-trade.

The series starring emerging young actors Beau Swartz, Keiva Bradley, and Ryan Ruffing premieres on the gay streaming service Dekkoo on November 17.

“Most television shows about sex work either glorify the trade or exploit it,” out filmmaker Omar Salas Zamora explains. He wrote and directed the series with Calvin Picou. “In Adam in Fragments, we aim to examine the profession, not by sensationalizing it, but through exploring the main character and his interactions with drug dealers and johns.”

We spoke with the filmmaker on set in Los Angeles.

How true-to-life is Adam in Fragments?

Santa Monica Boulevard as a hub for sex work is pretty much extinct today. The sex industry has gone completely digital. It's done through location-based apps. That's great for the safety of sex workers but it is not exactly cinematic to look at cell phone screens, so we leaned into our own reality.

Interesting. So, it takes place in modern day Los Angeles, but as if we were back in the 1990s.

Yes, maybe even earlier. Adam in Fragments is a hustler's odyssey with a grim 70s cinema aesthetic. Santa Monica Boulevard was so much more of a community in the 70s and 80s. Hustlers protected each other and especially looked

after the teenagers that would join them.

They shared condoms and kept violent johns away. Now, sex workers operate on their own terms, inside whatever safe space they've created for themselves. So, the need for comradery isn't there anymore.

From where did you draw inspiration for the series?

Calvin (Picou) and I studied the photography of Eve Fowler and PhilipLorca diCorcia who framed their hustlers in a romantic, otherworldly way. We also watched as many documentaries as we could get our hands on. It was fascinating to witness the subjects trying to grapple the situation they're in.

The series is reminiscent of “My Own Private Idaho.”

Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho is so iconic that you can't really escape it when you're dealing with material about hustlers.

Also, Pasolini directed a fantastic movie called Attacone, about a pimp that

becomes destitute when his only prostitute is sent to prison, which though not the story of Adam, has some parallels.

Who is Adam?

Adam is an actor. He must be to survive. He decompartmentalizes himself and shows only pieces of himself to the person paying for his company. He is someone that has shed his own personal desires and goals and has become a cypher for the enjoyment of others. The goal was for the audience to observe him at arms-length until the final moments, questioning his choices but understanding that he must do what he does to survive.

Why does he hide his identity from johns?

Practically, it's for his own safety. But Adam also protects his anonymity so fiercely because he likes his ability to transform into the most desirable version of himself to each john.

actors, and crew, have such busy schedules and it's difficult coordinating everyone's schedules in a way that allows us to create a world on film. We were lucky we had the caliber of actors we had who took the material seriously and were determined to produce a stellar project.

Did you have an intimacy director on set?

It was discussed but we opted to have a minimal crew instead. Any scene that involved nudity would be directed from another room, leaving only the cinematographer and boom operator in the room. When it comes to filming nude scenes, the most important thing is to make sure the actors are comfortable with each, and every movement.

Is he gay?

I don't think anyone could really know.

Adam was abused from a young age. He never had a say on his own sexual preferences. Someone that's struggling so hard just to survive another day doesn't have time for such desires.

Why does he reveal himself to Lucy?

He finds a real human connection with her.

Lucy's younger, with a faith in the future.

She hasn't been poisoned yet by the business. Every other relationship in Adam's life is transactional but he finds a friend in Lucy and for the first time in his life, puts another human being before himself. He begins to question his place in the industry.

How did you to choose Beau Swartz for the role of Adam?

It was never not going to be Beau. I collaborated with him on the short film version of Adam In Fragments in 2019. Even though the short is its own encapsulated story, it always felt like that character had more to him. When this project became more realistic, I called Beau because if he wasn't on board, I would have never done it.

What were some of the challenges in making Adam in Fragments?

What is one lesson you learned about the sex industry from the filming of Adam in Fragments?

Just a few years ago, sex workers were impulsively characterized as wounded people and victims. As a society, we're beginning to understand there's a healthy side to this world. The sex trade has been destigmatized in recent years and that's a good thing for the Adams of the world.

It all boils down to what you feel comfortable with, and transparency. If you are spending time with each guy, then be honest about your intentions.

Dear Andreus, There is a guy that I really like, and we spend so much time together. The only problem is that I can never get a word in. Also, we can't assume that people have the same capacity as we do when it comes to social skills. If you want to continue seeing him, then you likely will have to find a way to tell him that you are not communicating well. Better to do it sooner than later, because if you are feeling annoyed – that means that this is something that needs to be addressed. You can also take control sometimes by leading the conversation - and maybe he will get the hint.
