Alyssa Edwards Live at

The Broward Center Tuesday,May 31 By Scott Holland

24 | HotspotsMagazine.com

From Mesquite Texas to the global stage, Alyssa Edwards is unstoppable. Her life is a spectacle; from Season 5 of the EmmyAward winning television show RuPaul's Drag Race (2013) to her web series "Alyssa's Secret", her own Netflix series "Dancing Queen" (2018) and America's Got Talent (2021). Now the smash hit show direct from London's West End comes to America. "Life, Love & Lashes - Memoirs of a Queen" is a must see tell-all story about her life, drag and finding love. Audiences are raving! The whole first act is Justin diving in and talking about him coming out in a conservative state and what its like for him. It was a pleasure to once again sit down with Alyssa for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Since your stint on all stars, you have travelled the world many times, what is your favorite City or Venue and why? OMG you are putting me on the spot! I feel like I am in Q&A in Miss Gay America all over again. It's really been a dream traveling the world but there is no place like home in Mesquite. Although, I must say Australia was amazing as I never thought it would be in reach for me. When I landed there the first time, it was magical. Speaking of magical, Disney World is also one of my favorites. Speaking of traveling what is the funniest story that has happened to you while traveling? Touring with Shangela and La Ganga we have created so many memories. When I look back at my journal, I giggle out loud. Some of the moments we had., you just had to be there. One time I was on a train with Shangela, and we were in the UK. We didn't have first class tickets, but Shangela was bound and determined to get us in there. So, we went into first class and when they came by, I put my sunglasses on and Shangela was able to talk her way out of getting us removed from first class. Since coming into fame, what has been the best thing you purchased for yourself? For others? For myself I purchased a home, and that's my biggest investment and I am very proud of that. I am also very proud of being able to help my family. Do you still have time to run the studio and coach dancers? If I don't have a wig on, I am teaching a dance class. I was just there last night. As much as I love traveling, there is no better joy then being in that classroom with those kids; it is so powerful. We are going into our 20th season. Do you ever have the bug to go back to pageantry? In my head, of course. I will role play in my head and picture myself when they pick the top 5. Are you and Coco on better terms? Absolutely. We were friends in the show. We are like brothers and sister, we fight and disagree, but we love each other, and I have

a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Coco and Martin (the man behind it all). To put the rumors to rest, during the premiere of season 5 I was at Coco's house, and we watched it together. Who are you closest with from your seasons or any other season of Drag Race? HotspotsMagazine.com | 25

I am the closest with Shangela as we were friends before drag race. She is my family along with Laganga. Recently I got to work with a lot of the girls, and I loved them all including Shea, Brooke Lynn, Kylie, Crystal Method, Heidi, Jan, etc. What's your marital status? I am in a relationship; we are a year in. I hosted a global audition and he won! Describe Alyssa in 3 words? Electrifying, fictional, and glamorous. What do you do for fun? I have recently been on a fitness journey; I go to Barry's boot camp class or bike ride around the lake. What's ahead for Alyssa? I believe my book of life is written its just now being read out loud, and I am just enjoying it. Tell our readers about your show “Alyssa: Life, Love and Lashes Tour,” and why they should buy tickets before it sells out? This is the becoming of Alyssa Edwards. Netflix dancing queen gave everyone an introduction, but this is the story of me pulling back the sparkling curtains and

“If I don't have a wig on, I am teaching a dance class... As much as I love traveling, there is no better joy then being in that classroom...”

allowing people into the world of Justin Johnson. The ups and downs and the exciting roller coaster. Its high energy, it colorful, its vibrant and very multifaceted and layered. I am so proud of it; it truly is a hallmark of my life. Is there anything I didn't ask you that you want to talk about? I want to thank all of the viewers and the supporters. I told my partner yesterday that I was watching a video of a boy with his mom putting make up on him. The boy wanted it so badly and was shy about telling his mom, so she recorded him seeing make up on for the first time. There was a time when I was waiting for the world to change and now not only do I get to witness the change, but I am also a part of it. It is now mainstream! People are celebrating the art of drag and I am just very grateful.

BenDeLaCreme has appeared on two seasons of the Emmy award winning RuPaul's Drag Race her first go-round securing her a spot among the show's “15 fan favorites of all time.” After being crowned “Miss Congeniality” on Season Six, she returned to compete on the Third season of “RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars” on VH1 where she garnered more challenge wins than any other competitor in the show's history, among other series records. “BenDeLaCreme is...Ready To Be Committed” plays the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center on Friday, May 20 and

is the fourth solo show written, directed, and produced by BenDeLaCreme and showcases the multifaceted superstar at her best. It was a pleasure to sit down with Dela once again for this exclusive Hotspots interview. Now that many years have passed, do you regret taking yourself out of All Stars or do you stand by that decision and why? Absolutely I stand by it. Winners can be remembered or forgotten, but my name has now become part of the drag race history that will never die. Its also one of the most powerful moves I have ever made. I had the privilege to make a move that was great reality tv. Since your stint on all stars, you have travelled the world many times, what is your favorite City or Venue and why? There are quite a few really. I love my longtime hometown of Seattle, where audiences have been supporting me and I have gathered a following long before Drag Race. LA and New York have great crowds, but I am constantly going to new places, and they are so welcoming. Every

city is different and it makes it a different performance every time. Speaking of traveling what is the funniest story that has happened to you while traveling? There are so many it becomes a wash. But during our holiday tour Jinkx and I got caught in an airport in Toronto as someone printed the wrong tickets and our flight left the day prior. We were stuck there with like 20 suitcases, but we became creative and wrote a sitcom. Since coming into fame, what has been the best thing you purchased for yourself? For others? I really tend to put so much of the money I make back into the art. During the pandemic I produced and co-wrote the Jinkx and Dela Holiday special. We made the project out of a need to be creative when we couldn't be on the road. That was an amazing gift I invested in. That was a gift to myself and the rest of the crew. It cost a lot of money but was well worth the investment. Other than Jinkx, who are you closest with from your seasons or any other season of Drag Race? Willam and Alaska are both people I HotspotsMagazine.com | 69

connected to very strongly. Trixie and I are very close as well. A lot of my closest drag friends haven't been on Drag race, such as Peaches Christ, and Varla Jean Merman. What's your marital status? I have been with my partner for almost 8 years now, and a lot of things about our relationship inspired this tour. Is it hard being away from your partner while touring? Gus travels with me. We run my production company together. It's a full-time job for both of us. Its grueling and we are both constantly working, but we get to share that passion. Describe Dela in 3 words? Optimistic, naïve, and surreal. 70 | HotspotsMagazine.com

What do you do for fun? Lately I am on tour so there is not a lot of free time. However, if you love what you for a living, like I do, you don't work a day in your life What's ahead for Ben and for Dela? Dela is on this tour through the end of July, so that's the foreseeable future. After that I will be remounting one of Peaches Christ production in San Francisco for her parody on Death Becomes Her where I play the Goldie Hawn Role. After that Jinkx and I will create our new holiday tour. Tell our readers about your show “BenDeLaCreme is Ready To Be Committed,” and why they should buy tickets before it sells out? It's based on personal experience, and I get to explore bigger topics that are not necessarily autobiographical to Ben. She decides at the top of the show that she needs to relay race to the alter, but she only has a cake. I play 15 characters, and it's a surrealist Alice In Wonderland….in Love. It's a comedy but there are many relatable subjects. The challenges of Intimacy and loneliness, and many more! It's a must see, so get your tickets!

Helix Studio’s Newest Stud is Lighting Up Small Screens By Robbie Todoro

Born and raised in Sin City, Silas Brooks made his adult film star debut in the Helix film, Finally You. Since then, he has appeared in popular movies including Hook Up Stories Homebodies, and his latest, Tech Support, where he stars as a tech hottie who is hired to fix Seth Peterson and Aiden Garcia's "slow computer". In real life, Brooks is something of a computer wizard, at least when it comes to graphic design. He enjoys animating, soccer, and swimming. We got to know him a little more at his home in Las Vegas. How would you describe yourself in three words? Funny, caring, and I don't know… fun? Who is the love of your life? That's easy. Lil babies, my Pitbull pup! He's a blue nosed Pitbull and loves people. He is super friendly to everyone! What do you love most about living in Las Vegas? I was born and raised here, and I just love how unique the city is. There's a lot of fun to be had here and not just in the gay bars, although they're fun too! There are plenty of jobs in Vegas, especially in hospitality and nightlife. Did you enjoy your childhood? Honestly, my childhood was kind of 78 | HotspotsMagazine.com

dysfunctional. My mom and dad fought constantly. They never married. I lived full time with my dad and spent weekends with my mother. Were you playing soccer outside with the neighborhood kids or was it more likely to find you indoors animating? It was more likely to find me inside on the computer. What kind of animation do you do? 3D computer-generated imagery. Do you aspire to be a CGI artist? Yes! I want to get into 3D CGI art, special effects, game development, digital art, and stuff like that. That's hopefully my endgame after adult movies. Let's discuss that. How did you find your way into adult film? When I turned 18, I started applying to all the top studios. Why did you choose to sign with Helix? It was the obvious best choice for me. I love everyone who works at Helix! It's such a friendly environment and everything is done so professionally and with the fans and talent in mind. Have you become close friends with any of the guys at Helix? Yes, I would consider a bunch of them to be close friends. Garret (Kinsley), Kai (Taylor), Jacob (Hansen), Seth (Peterson), and Travis (Stevens) are all super fun to

hang with. We all have so much fun when they come to Vegas to shoot, both on camera and off. Spill the tea on your favorite scene partner! That's a tough one! If I had to name one, I think I would probably have to say Sam Ledger.

and/or doing graphic design work at a major studio. What celeb would you welcome sliding into your DMs? Lil Nas X. I love his music and he is pretty bad ass. What famous person, living or dead, would you most like to have dinner with? Gordon Ramsey so he can make the dinner. Final message to fans? I really just want to say thanks to everyone out there who supports me and enjoys the content I put out. I will keep trying my best! I especially love all the nice letters I receive from fans at Helix Studios. They're always fun to read and I do read them.

>> Why Sam? He was so easy to work with and man, he is a good performer! What is something fans would be surprised to learn about you? Maybe that I'm bisexual? Do your friends and family support your adult film career? I haven't told any of them! No one has made the discovery yet? Not that I'm aware of. If they have, no one has told me! What's left to do on your life's bucket list? So much! But the really big thing I still have left to do is finish school. It's top on my list. Did you enjoy school? Not particularly. High school was not a good time for me. I found it to be really underwhelming. But I think college will be different. Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully working in game development

FREE RADICALS:

HOW TO FIGHT THEM AND STAY YOUNG FOREVER! You work out and do cardio, eat clean and healthy foods, and try to get out into the fresh air and sunshine every day. On the surface you're doing everything correctly. You should be full energy, ready to take on life like a tiger. But the truth is, you often feel tired and crappy. You seem to pick up every cold and flu that's making the rounds. Somehow you just can't figure out why. You may be overlooking things in your life that can stress your body harder than

you realize. Too much partying, not getting enough sleep, skipping break-fast and eating too much junk are all factors that can take their toll on that healthy body. Combine these factors with stress at work, not drinking enough H2O and breathing polluted air, and it's no wonder you don't always feel like Superman. In fact, you may be more toxic than you realize. Any of the above factors can cause a build up in your system of evil villains called free radicals. These culprits are highly toxic mutant

oxygen molecules that can be found in the atmosphere, in foods, and in you. Free radicals cause chemical imbalances in the body referred to as “oxidative stress”. This condition has been linked to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, tissue inflammation, and a host of other illnesses. Free radicals also speed up the aging process by causing wrinkles, muscle atrophy and impotence! The best way to counteract the ravages of free radicals comes from simple lifestyle changes. Quit smoking. Drink less. Cut saturated fats and other junk from your diet. Supplementation with antioxidants is also vital to your battle with free radicals. Antioxidants are natural foods or carefully compounded supplements that “kick ass”

on free radicals and help restore normal function to your body and its tissues. As with any supplement, check with your doctor first before loading up. Here is my list of favorite antioxidants. Vitamins C and E help reverse oxidative stress by ridding the body of free radicals thereby returning it to optimal homeostasis. This is crucial for anyone who wants to be in tip top shape by maintaining a healthy heart and metabolism. Wild blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, bilberries (in fact, just about any kind of berries), and

pomegranates are all potent antioxidants and are loaded with vitamin C to boost the immune system. Green tea is one of the most powerful antioxidants known to man in its ability to prevent 1) viral and bacterial activity, 2) lung cancer due to smoking, 3) skin damage and skin cancer due to radiation (sun damage) and a host of other age- related maladies. Ginko Biloba has been shown to 1) reduce blood clots, 2) regulate blood pressure, 3) prevent the formation of free radicals, 4) increase the flow of blood to the brain, and 5) improve alertness and short-term memory. There is no way to turn back the clock and stay young forever, but you can win an important struggle: the war on free radicals and the nasty stuff they can do to age you.

creativity to the limit. The designers will compete in innovative furniture-making challenges from studios in their hometowns, with DeGeneres appearing in each episode to surprise and delight the contestants and the judges. Acclaimed actor Scott Foley brings his passion for furniture design to his role as Host and judge. Joining Foley as judges are renowned interior designer Brigette Romanek and award-winning, oneof-a-kind contemporary artist and designer Fernando Mastrangelo. The contestants kicking off this once-in-alifetime competition are brilliant, awardwinning designers Christina Z. Antonio, Arielle Assouline-Lichten, and Erica Sellers in New York City; Alejandro Artigas in Los Angeles; Mark Grattan in New Hope, PA; Paul Jeffrey in Phoenix, AZ; and Urvi Sharma in Providence, RI, who specialize in using wood, metal, stone, fabric, glass, and other

materials for their creations. For their final challenge, the remaining designers face the ultimate test: creating a cohesive three-piece collection for Brigette's iconic Los Angeles home. Sharing a studio for the first time, the finalists move at a record pace to conceive their collections, source materials, and build pieces stunning enough to earn the title of “Ellen's Next Great Designer” – and the $100,000 grand prize. By Andreus Quinones

Dear Andreus, I have been with my boyfriend for three years now. We live together and have a pretty functional and trusting relationship. Recently, he took my credit card and made some purchases, and I did not know about it until I saw it on my card statement. When I asked him about it, he said that it was not big deal, and that he was going to give me the money back. I feel like he overstepped, though he doesn't see it that way. He said that we have been a couple long enough that it shouldn't be a problem. Am I wrong for feeling this way? Sincerely, Tyrone S. Dear Tyrone, You are not wrong for feeling that way. However, if you have not created boundaries before, this might be the issue. Once a relationship becomes serious and you decide to move in together, there should be a conversation about expectations and boundaries. It is healthy to share some things, but also have things to yourself. You might want to have that conversation now to avoid problems in the future. Communication is key, and delivery of that communication just as important. Be gentle yet firm and set the boundaries. Hope this helps. Dear Andreus, My husband and I have been married for two years. We got into a polyamorous relationship about six months ago. I was never really into that sort of thing, but the other guy was really nice, and I thought that we had a good understanding. Now 124 | HotspotsMagazine.com

“You need to talk directly to your husband. The other guy is just the third party in your relationship. You and your husband need to decide on the best course of action.” I feel as if the other guy has gotten too close to my husband, and I want him gone. I have said something to the guy about it, but he doesn't want to leave. The situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for me. I just want him out. He has been staying with us for the last 3 months, and it is overkill. What do I do? Sincerely, Ronny P. Dear Ronny, First things first. Talking to the other guy is not going to get you any results. He is probably very comfortable in this situation, especially with a place to stay. You need to talk directly to your husband. The other guy is just the third party in your relationship. You and your husband need to decide on the best course of action, because your marriage should take precedence over anything else. Sit down and have a conversation with your husband, tell him exactly how you feel, and together you can decide on where to go from there. Is this something that is fixable, or does this person need to go? Is polyamory even the right thing for you? Unfortunately, someone usually gets hurt or left out when there are more than two involved in a relationship. Home base is always first! I hope it works out for the best.
