RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 6

By Scott Holland

The Finale

Ru enters the work room for the last time for All Stars and tells the girls this is the last week, the finale. He also says that the winner needs to be a little bit country and a little bit rock n roll, because for their final Maxi challenge they will be collaborating on Ru's new song “This is my Country.” It's a love letter to the USA. They each must write their own lyrics for the song. The girls then get a video call from country superstar Tanya Tucker, and get to ask her questions. After choreography rehearsal with Jamal, the four finalists then have their one on two chat with Ru and Michelle. On the runway, its just family so joining Ru is Michelle, Ross, and Carson, and the category is “All Star Hall of Fame Eleganza Extravaganza.” The judges deliberate, but before Ru 32 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Crowns a winner, she decides she wants all the finalists to lip synch for the crown, to the same song, but separately. I interviewed the top 4 the day before the winner was announced (since I already posted the interview with Eureka when she was eliminated before being brought back she only answers a few questions). How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race the first time? Kylie – Well honey I am no stranger to change in life. Ever since I was a kid I went from home to home, to my house burning down, and moving back and forth and trying to figure out who I am. My fife has always been changing. Since my first time on drag race I have learned to listen to the universe and take it as it is.

It has changed in so many ways, and life is what you make of it, and I try to always make the best of it. Ra'Jah – Everybody's life has changed since the last time I was on drag race. We have been through a pandemic and social injustice, but my world has been exposed to a lot more people and I get recognized a lot. Ginger – Oh my goodness…. that was the better part of a decade ago. Professionally I have done Movies, TV Shows and sold-out tours. When you are on TV, you get to see yourself through other people's eyes, so I have done a lot of personal growth which I am more proud of then the professional growth. What has been some of your favorite places to visit as a RuPaul Alumni? Kylie - I would have to say going back home to my hometown and feeling accomplished was the best place to visit. Ra'Jah – I love any place that I can go to, and I do not take it for granted especially after the 2020 we all had, being stuck in a house. If I get to do what I love, I feel blessed. Ginger – If I could live in Belfast Ireland, I would. The people are so lovely and its so beautiful. On Christmas it's just breathtaking, I love it. How exciting was it to get called back to All Stars and did you consider not coming back? Kylie - Drag race is so close to my heart as it helped me discover who I am as a person and has kept me Ginger making money. Therefore, I was so excited to come back and show everyone who Kylee Sonique is. I knew if I go the opportunity again, I would make the most of it. Ra'Jah – It never crossed my mind to say no, and when I got the phone call, I was excited to have the opportunity to prove what I can do, and present what I wanted. Ginger – I knew my time on the show wasn't done, but I knew I couldn't have a rehash of All Stars Season 2. I needed to be mentally prepared and after the pandemic I was ready. How did you prepare differently for allstars than you did the first time you were on the show?

Kylie - It was very similar as far as getting stuff together except for there was a pandemic and everything was closed, and money was very tight since we hadn't worked for such a long time. I reached out to my resources this time and dug stuff out of the closet I had never used. Ra'Jah – I don't think I prepared any differently, but what I did was tell myself to have fun this time around. The first time I was so stressed, I didn't have fun. Ginger – I just wanted to have fun this time. My first time I had no idea what to do or what to expect. On All Stars 2, I thought I could throw money at the problem, and I didn't know how to focus. This time, I wanted a good experience either way and I did. Now that's its over is there anything you would have done differently? Kylie - Honestly, absolutely not…I stand by everything!

Ra’Jah

Eureka Ra'Jah – no, I think I did pretty good! I'm very proud of what I presented. Ginger – no, I wouldn't have done anything differently, I did what I needed to do for myself at that moment. What challenge or look on All Stars are you most proud of? Kylie - Honestly, I am proud of everything I presented. If I had to pick one, my baby blue jeans look with the trans flag on my arm. Ra'Jah – I am proud of all of my looks as I made all the looks myself, except the blue fringe look which was made by one of my sisters. I poured my heart and energy and

love into the package and I am proud I was able to show everything I prepared and got to win both of the design challenges. Ginger – I am extremely proud of Snatch Game as I love Phyllis Diller, but the Drag Tots challenge is probably the one I am the most proud of as I have never done well at a sewing challenge before. In the beginning did you expect to be in the top 4, and if so who did you think would be there with you? Kylee - I had no expectations, except to make sure I was happy and that I pushed myself as much as I can. I wanted to earn the placement I would get. Eureka – Yeah I kind of felt like I would. I definitely saw Ginger there but wasn't sure about the rest. Ra'Jah – I did, as I came into the competition knowing I would be in the final spots, but wasn't sure who it would be with. However, I thought it may have been Silky and A'Keria with me. Ginger – I knew I would make the top 4, as I wasn't going to get in my own way this time. I never knew from week to week who else was going to make it to the top 4 as it was such a strong cast, but I always saw myself there. If you can't win, who’d you want to win? Kylie - There is no such thing as I can't win. Eureka – I guess I would say Raja, because she has changed so much, and the fans have really gotten to see who she is. Also, she has won the most challenges. Honestly, I would love any of us to win. Ra'Jah – I really can't complain about anyone that is in the top 4 as they are all good. However, if I can't win, its rigged…LOL!! Seriously, any one of us is a good option. Ginger – Nobody, burn the footage. Seriously, it's the strongest top 4 in the history of Drag Race and I think a case could be made for all of us. If you do win, what are you going to do with the $100,000? Kylie - Well honey, I will make sure those taxes are paid. But I promised my dog I would buy us a house if I won. Eureka - I am going to pay off my student loan and my mom's debt from when she passed away. Ra'Jah – I'm going to put it in my bank 34 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Kylie

account and let it sit there for a minute and of course pay some taxes. Ginger – I am going to have a baby. My husband and I have been trying for awhile to have a baby, and then the pandemic hit and of course we had no income. So, I would take that money and put together the family we always wanted to have. What's Ahead for You? Kylie - OMG, anything is possible with Kylie. Ever since I left Albany Georgia at 17, I never looked back, except to check my reflection. I am going to do whatever my heart desires, and Drag Race is helping those dreams come true. I would like to do more television, music, acting and activism. Ra'Jah – The future is, luckily, so bright. I am about to embark on a new journey across the pond in Death Drop Theater. I also have some music coming out soon. I would also love to get my designs out. There is so much coming on the horizon, I can't be more excited. Ginger – There is so much, and I am proud of all of it. My cooking show is streaming on Out TV. MY album, Double Wide Diva, is a Country album and is my story and the first single was released a little while ago and the Album will be released on September 17. I am also in Provincetown currently and I am blessed to be selling out all my shows. It's so overwhelmingly positive. Bobby Newberry has choreographed music videos for Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliot and The Pussycat Dolls. His work has also been seen on TV's Dancing with The Stars and X-Factor. This weekend, he'll take the mic at Miami Pride performing tracks from his latest EP. Joining him on stage will be Sam J Garfield, eight male dancers and Rhea Litre, debuting their new duet, “Freak.” “It'll be a full thirty-minute set,” Newberry confirms. We spoke with him from his Los Angeles home.

Bobby Newberry Performs Miami Pride with Rhea Litre By Chris Azzopardi

By William Cooke 36 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Why is it important that we celebrate Pride? We need to always celebrate Pride and never forget how hard generations of our community fought for the rights that we enjoy today. Love is love! Be proud of who you are, stand up for what you believe in, spread love and stop hate. How did you get into choreographing for major stars? I started by posting videos of my choreography on YouTube. It was in the early stages of the platform so my following grew really quickly. Of all the songs you have worked on, which is your fave? That's so tough! I was part of the choreography team for the Pussycat Dolls' “When I grow up” and it was one of my favorite projects ever. Also choreographing Nicki Minaj's “Rake It Up” was so fun. Working one on one with Nicki was incredible. Did you ever have to convince an artist to do a move they didn't want to do? No, I think one of the most important jobs of a great choreographer is to put the artist and their artistry above the steps. If the artist doesn't feel the steps are right for the song, they're not. Some choreographers get caught up in their choreography when in reality, it's all about the artist and the whole picture. What made you want to step up to the mic? My love of singing actually came before my love of dance. I started singing the second I was able to talk. My family would watch me sing everything from Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson to Prince and Madonna. I would pretend play “tour” all day in my room, even changing costumes between numbers! How did you choose the sound for your own music? My sound changes a lot. I am constantly getting new ideas. Melodies are forever flowing through my head. Like, literally all day and night. So, while today I would describe my sound as pop with R&B and hip-hop elements, who knows what tomorrow may bring? My art is inspired by my life. Bobby Newberry performs the Miami Beach Pride pop stage on Saturday, September 18 at 8:30pm. More information at MiamiBeachPride.com

I read Steven Rowley's third novel “The Guncle” with my 8-year-old niece in mind. After all, his book makes a case for how parenting extends beyond a child's actual parents. Uncles, aunts, friends, grandma, grandpa, babysitters: “It takes a village,” Rowley reminds me during our recent conversation. It was “The Guncle” that reminded me of what my own niece, who has experienced abrupt life changes due to the pandemic and sudden family shifts, told me recently after I made an aside about how it's unlikely I'll become a parent at this point in my life. Ever the inquisitive one, she said, “What do you mean, Uncle?” I briefly explained that if I were going to parent a child, it would've happened years ago. She corrected me, reminding me that, in her eyes, I am a 42 | HotspotsMagazine.com

parent. “But you've got me,” she said, as my heart burst at the seams. Rowley's book explores this very bond between Guncles and their nieces (and nephews) with astute, heartwarming observations, while illustrating how the term “parent” expands beyond traditional mom and dad roles. In the book, Rowley's character Patrick is a gay man who spends his days in Mr. Turk caftans, soaking up the Palm Springs sun. He's no longer the sitcom star he once was, so he's got some time on his hands. That is, until his life is turned upside down when Maisie and Grant, his niece and nephew, lose their mother, also one of Patrick's dearest friends and sister-in-law. Suddenly, Patrick, still working through the grief of losing his own partner, becomes the children's temporary guardian. Just one who

happens to love a draping caftan. Rowley spoke to me from Palm Springs, where he lives, about the places he found inspiration for the book and why nieces and nephews share special bonds with their gay uncles. Because of my relationship with my niece, I really identified with this idea of how Guncles can be an escape for the nieces and nephews in their life and can offer some stability when they need it most. Can you talk about that in terms of this story? That's incredible that you have such a parallel in your own life, and I do have five nieces and nephews. I don't have children of my own, but there's so many more LGBTQ+ parents doing remarkable jobs raising children, and I'm at awe of what they do, you know? It's unarguably one of life's great emotional experiences, and so I'm always conscious of not having that in my arsenal as a writer, and I felt I had things I wanted to say about kids. This was a very interesting project for me, but I was surprised when I became an uncle how deep those relationships actually were to me and how connected I felt to these kids. Guncles have become a thing over the past five, 10 years, and so it's not just a gay uncle but also a connotation of a larger-than-life figure; they're sort of able to lavishly dote on kids, perhaps, in a way. They fly in from big cities for holidays. My nieces and nephews, they don't quite have a grasp on my life. They're all on the East Coast; I live in Palm Springs. I have a house with a swimming pool. I don't go to an office the way they see other adults go, and so they don't quite have my life pegged. It was truly fun to celebrate the specialness of these relationships. You know, there was “Auntie Mame” first, the 1955 Patrick Dennis novel, but he was closeted and came out later in his life as at least bisexual. But it got me thinking, too, about a lot of these queer writers from the mid-century, like Tennessee Williams, or writers who created these larger-than-life female

characters perhaps because they weren't able to openly write about gay men, and that was really interesting to reclaim: that sort of Auntie Mame character as a Guncle. Like Maisie and Grant when they visit Patrick, do you recognize a special level of excitement when your nieces and nephews come see you in Palm Springs? For sure. Writing a story about grief against the backdrop of unrelenting, cheerful sunshine was interesting. And then there's the sort of fish-out-of-water element. The idea of having kids here and seeing this lifestyle that's very different from what they're seeing, that's where I had some fun, particularly, in creating JED, the gay throuple that lives just over Patrick's wall on the neighboring property. Putting them in a situation where they might see different relationship models and types of families than they might see in suburban Connecticut was fun to play with. I love that you come at family structure from different angles. It's a slight echo of who an uncle is, the “it takes a village” kind of attitude about raising kids. It does take more than just parents sometimes to successfully raise a child. And that more than two people would

HotspotsMagazine.com | 43

be in a relationship is really scary thinking to a lot of people. So it was fun to play with people's expectations about who this throuple might be and divert those expectations a bit by making them very family-minded with legitimate things to contribute to the conversation. What did you want this book to say about the meaning of family? I wanted it to touch on the great history with a found family in queer culture and queer history. I came out in 1991, and so the tradition of found family in queer culture was something I wanted to touch on. And yes, Patrick is a blood relation to these kids, but the three of them sort of being thrown together as they are is really a unique circumstance for the three of them. The idea of just upending sound traditional structures and having it be more about acceptance and letting these kids be who they are. I never really understood people who wanted kids just to be mini versions of themselves all over again. (Laughs.) There isn't anyone that is so great that what the world needs is another version of them, you know? And so the great joy to me in having kids would be to see who these people become on their own terms, and so I wanted to touch on all of that. What do your nieces and nephews think of the fact that their Guncle has written a book? They're still a little young. But I'm sorry for anyone who happens to be related to a writer (laughs). We do tend to lift things. But the book is dedicated to the five of them, so to the extent that I may have borrowed from their lives, I hope they will forgive me. In the acknowledgements, you also say that your editor, Sally Kim, recognized this story before you did. Could you talk about that and how it developed?

It stemmed from a week where my brother brought his two boys to visit. He's an attorney in Boston, and he was here with the boys for a week and after about 12 hours here got called into court, basically, to represent one of his clients. He had to leave, and I suddenly was left with the two boys. I felt like an understudy being thrust into the lead role. I documented the whole thing on Instagram. My editor was watching me flounder a bit that week, and she said, "You know, I think there might be something to write about here." So some of this is based on your own experiences. It's a combination of a number of things. One is, I've had a long fascination with “Auntie Mame” and other magical caregiver stories: Mary Poppins, Maria from “The Sound of Music.” It seemed fun to me to create a queer entry in that genre. I imagined the book as a much lighter comedic novel at first, and a month into the writing process I lost one of my very best friends from college to breast cancer. She left behind a 6-year-old son, which was devastating for me and for her family. But the idea of grief in children was something I was suddenly thinking about much more seriously. How else do you explain this relationship between Guncles and their nieces and nephews? I do make a joke in the book. Patrick says to the kids, "You know, I have a swimming pool with no natural heirs. You should be nice to me." (Laughs.) I think there's an absolute acceptance of them for who they are, and I think a lot of Guncles… and justice for lesbian aunts! We need a better word than “Launt.” But we are delighted in them for who they are. We're not the people in their lives that put any pressure on them to be anything other than who they are. I think they respond to that energy.

Emori DuBois

First winner of the legendary Miss Florida F.I. Pageant

Who else can claim they were in the infamous queer documentary “The Queen,” they were at the Stonewall riots, and that they were the first winner of the legendary Miss Florida F.I. Pageant. There's only one who can, and it's the indomitable, Emore DuBois. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Philadelphia. When's the first time that you dressed up? I'm now 77. I started off around age 23 or 24 in Atlantic City. I know that I was at least 21 the first time that I wore a dress (laughs). How did you come up with your name? Emore is my real first. I took “DuBois” from W. E. B. Du Bois. How did you start off your professional career? I won Miss Philadelphia around 1967, which was a wonderful title to have. That started me off on this adventure. What did you do after that? 46 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Well, I was in the documentary, “The Queen,” from 1968. That's the documentary about the pageants in New York. I was the first runner-up. I was the girl in the white gown. I was very close friends with Harlow from the film—Racheal Harlow. But I lost contact with him for many years. The first time that I saw the film was in P. Town, believe it or not. What else did you do in New York? I was living in Philly, but we'd take the train to New York. I was at Stonewall during those riots, if you can believe that. But I didn't know how to handle it. I wasn't into battling, and carrying on, and breaking

things. I should of, but I wasn't. Some of us just thought, “Okay, it's another night. They've done this before.” Do you have any other vivid memories of New York? We used to go to The Sanctuary when it was new, the place that some say was the first gay disco. It was like, a regular church. It had the pews on either side, and the dance floor was in between them (laughs). It was the first time that I was ever shocked. You were the first winner for the Miss Florida Pageant in 1973. What was your experience with that? Well, first of all, I worked on the costume for three years. It was a beaded Shirley Bassey costume. I worked on it a little bit at a time. And then I rehearsed the number for over two years. I did belly dancing in the number. What are your other thoughts about the pageant? I'm really happy that the pageant has gone on this long. It sort of carves a niche between drag and impersonators, but it does it sort of subtly. It is really wonderful. What other shows did you do in Florida? I had a show on Miami Beach for years. I worked at a place called Le Crib. I also worked at the Fountainebleau in a Jewel Box Revue [the Jewel Box Revue is widely considered America's first racially integrated drag revue]. What are your other memories of Florida?

I was the first one to do a solo female impersonator show in Florida, you know. I taught Dana Manchester, for example, how to do it. We called them “concerts.” You would do a few different celebrity impersonations in the show. But despite that, just know that I really love Florida. I get a tingle every time someone mentions it. Florida has produced so many performers. There's something in the water there. Where else did you perform other than Florida? I was in little shows. I traveled all over the county. I traveled with other female impersonators. You're in Las Vegas now. How did you end up there? I came to open a show here. I moved out here to do that, but the place burned down to the ground before we even did one show! I ended up working with Kenny Kerr for 20 years. I worked with Frank Marino in “La Cage” after that as well. What impersonations were you known for? I liked to do people that were less common. The audience would be more surprised by that. They always wanted me to do Diana Ross. I did her in shows for a while, and I met her many times, but she's done so much. Who's your favorite performer? My favorite performer in the entire world is Shirley Bassey. She does something to me. She has the most magnetic eyes. It's like she's hypnotizing you with them, or something. By the way, everyone knew me in Florida as Shirley Bassey. She came to see me when I was working at the Eden Rock there. She said that I was the best one that ever did her. Of all your shows, which one was your favorite? My favorite show I think was the Jewel Box. We did obscure numbers, like Josephine Baker. Everyone fell in love with it. I also did Shirley Bassey, and they loved her as well. Who choreographed your numbers? I thought of everything that I've ever done. What's the scariest thing that ever happened to you on stage?

When I did Shirley Bassey, I used to open with Goldfinger. The curtain would draw back, and you'd see this boy painted gold on a pole in the spotlight, with just a Gstring on. I'd come from one end of the stage, and the boy would be on the other, and we'd make our way towards each other. Well, one night he slipped because of the gold paint. He fell and broke a bone in his neck. What's the most shocking thing that you've ever seen a “drag” performer do? I had a friend in New York for a long time. His name was Crisis. He would do this number where he spoofed those Chiffon commercials, the ones where they had someone playing mother nature. He started off the number by coming out to this angelic music, and then he pulled off every bit of clothes as the number went on. Other than yourself, what performer did the best impersonation? I worked with Roxanne Russell, who was the second winner of the Miss Florida Pageant. He was the best Marilyn, ever. He had a masculine body, but he acted the whole thing out. That's what made it so amazing. Who's your favorite female impersonator? Roxanne Russell—his real name was Logan Carter. And I also like Michael St. Laurent from Florida, who was in the movie, The Rose. He was a comic, and he was very, very clever. Oh, and Tiffany Arieagus. She's one of the brightest glamour queens that there is. Speaking of female impersonators, did you ever meet Charles Pierce? I ran into him the last time that I was in P. Town after one of his shows. Pierce was against all that drag stuff, you know. When I met him, he said to me, “Oh, I'm so glad that someone wants to talk to me about female impersonation.” Who's your favorite contemporary? My favorite contemporary is Larry Edwards, a.k.a, Hot Chocolate. He does Tina Turner here in Vegas. We used to do two different eras of Tina. He did the younger version, and I did the older. With all your years in show business, did you ever dress up when you weren't on the stage? 48 | HotspotsMagazine.com

No. I would never reveal myself in public. I didn't go to the clubs in drag, and I certainly never walked around on the streets dressed up. If the show was over, my makeup was off. Are you retired now? Yes. I retired three years ago. And now, a fun question. Since you performed in Miami Beach, what do you think about the movie, “Birdcage?” I liked Birdcage, but it's a bit fake for me. I mean, a man trying to act like a woman (laughs). Most of the impersonators that I know wouldn't even consider themselves drag queens, let alone women.

And finally, would you ever come out of retirement and do a guest appearance? Well, I made an appearance at the Miss Florida Pageant three years ago. I took my time, and I drove there. I drove from Vegas to Florida. The country is absolutely beautiful. But you never know. Maybe there's another number in me still (laughs).

On the New 'L Word,’ Everybody's Invited to the Party Series vets Hailey, Moennig and Beals talk shining a light on a new LGBTQ+ generation with 'Generation Q'

By Chris Azzopardi

66 | HotspotsMagazine.com

What did the first run of “The L Word” get wrong? It's a question that was posed to veteran stars Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig on Zoom one recent afternoon. “Haircuts!” Hailey, 50, exclaims. “First season outfits, sunglasses,” adds Moennig, 43. Of course Hailey can't deny it: “There were some bad sunglasses,” she emphasizes. But the actresses who helped revolutionize queer characters on TV with “The L Word” when the show first aired on Showtime from 2004 to 2009 are also fully aware that the shades, the cuts and the outfits aren't the only thing that hasn't aged

still holds up.” Moennig isn't reticent about holding the show accountable for “storylines that are considered problematic now.” “There's no denying that,” she says. “But at that time, no one was there to hurt anyone's feelings or disparage anyone. That's what we knew then.” As the tide keeps turning for LGBTQ+ progress in this country, so does content that reflects those shifts. Between the original series and the 10 years that passed before the reboot premiered on Showtime in 2019, Hailey, Moennig and Beals saw an opportunity: to feature a

particularly well. The series, for as groundbreaking as it was then, has been criticized for missing the mark on trans representation. It's hard to ignore that fact retroactively in the years following the show, as trans issues are finally at the forefront of our cultural and political landscape. “We were where we were when we were there,” Hailey says, noting this is a common response of hers when asked about the passé parts of the show's initial run, something she seems to be asked about often. “It's so easy to be the Monday morning quarterback at this point. The show is dated stylistically, but thematically I think it

young, diverse cast of LGBTQ+ characters who could reflect contemporary queer life, along with delving into modern love dynamics like polyamory. Though the three actresses aren't writing the episodes, they're still doing their due diligence. “We need to make sure that our show is relevant,” says Hailey, who adds that during the decade the show was off the air “the world was changing before our eyes.” She says they felt not only a “responsibility to bring these characters back to show how they're living in HotspotsMagazine.com | 67

today's world, but also: 'Let's bring on some new characters to represent people in the community.'” Seeing as though they've “completely changed language,” Beals, 57, was thrilled to spotlight a new LGBTQ+ generation. “They've added words to the dictionary — non-binary used to be just a mathematical term,” she says. “We look at language in a different way (because) of this generation who refused to be anything other than selfidentified. So to be able to bring the show back on and explore those stories is really important and exciting to me.” At the onset of “Generation Q,” Beals, who plays Bette, expressed what subject matter she wanted to see represented in the series. One of those issues was race, especially colorism, in the LGBTQ+ community. Aging, which was also on her mind, was a topic she brought to the writers' room. Her suggestion led to an exploration of Bette's menopausal experiences in Season 1 of “Generation Q.” “For me, the show in itself is doing a lot of that work when it comes to personally my character,” Hailey says. “I want to go into personal stories and I feel like through that kind of representation, just being a gay woman and showing what we go through, is doing that work. It's not always about getting on the soapbox — it's about the subtleties of what we do.” Moennig's on the same page. She feels the show, by its very queer nature, is innately political, and always on her mind while filming is: “How do I make this as honest as possible?” “It's the little things that actually seem to provide a lot of impact,” she adds. Moennig recognizes that, from the beginning, the show was always meant to be a “celebration, not a woe-is-me fest.” It still is, she says. Beals wholeheartedly agrees: “It's primarily centered in joy and the smaller moments, and I think in that way it's been really forward-moving.” 68 | HotspotsMagazine.com

In Season 1, Alice (Hailey) navigates a throuple, Shane (Moennig) opens a queer bar, and Bette (Beals) is co-parenting Angie (Jordan Hull) with ex Tina (Laurel Holloman). Season 2 finds Bette more deeply exploring her mother-daughter relationship with Angie, while Alice writes a book that brings buried personal issues to the surface, things she hasn't quite figured out yet — “a lot of stuff you would think she might've at her age,” Hailey says, laughing. And what's going on with Shane? Moennig says to expect “a very, very slow burn where you're going to

have to watch a good majority of the season to get any kind of answer.” As for bringing their Alice, Bette and Shane together with the cast of the upcoming “Queer as Folk” reboot — well, it's not an impossible idea. “That would be amazing!” Beals says. “Boy, would that be cool,” Hailey adds. “That'd be fun.” And Beals, enthused by these two queer universes colliding, knows just the person to unite these iconic casts: “I know Alice is going to host a party and everybody's going to be there.”

The Tenth Annual South Florida Brazilian Festival on the Beach Starring Smash Mouth and a Star-Studded Lineup

The tenth anniversary of the South Florida Brazilian Festival on the beach Sept. 18 and 19 will be the event's boldest yet with poprock icon Smash Mouth headlining the show on Saturday night, global DJ/music producer Bruno Martini closing the show on Sunday night, and an impressive weekend lineup that includes Onze: 20, James McWhinney of Big Mountain and Vibes Up Strong, Vitor Kley, Paula Lima, Zeeba, Isra, among others. The two-day festival will take place just south of Fort Lauderdale Beach Park (1005 Seabreeze Blvd.) from noon until 10pm. For ten years, the South Florida Brazilian Festival has aimed to promote a message of global unity. The multicultural festival, which typically gathers a diverse crowd of thousands annually, features global cuisine from a range of local restaurants, dozens of exhibitors, a kids zone, Footvolley tournament, skate ramp exhibition with a ramp raffle and live performances by artists, 72 | HotspotsMagazine.com

musicians and dancers. The festival is the Southeast region's largest multicultural festival. Following a challenging year when live performances were sparse due to the global pandemic, this year's festival will not only celebrate the event's tenth anniversary, it will also applaud the world's ability to unite against the pandemic.

“This year's festival and our message of global unity has taken on even greater meaning in light of the year we have all endured.”

“This year's festival and our message of global unity has taken on even greater meaning in light of the year we have all endured,” said Luciano Sameli, the founder and organizer of the Brazilian Festival. “We hope this festival will be a joyful oasis for our community to come together.” Headlining band Smash Mouth is likewise celebrating a major anniversary this year; 2021 marks 20 years since the blockbuster release of “Shrek” and Smash Mouth's eponymous third (GOLD) album in 2001. For the festival, the band plans to play all their catchy fan favorites in addition to a brandnew single they released in May called “Camelot.” The song is a creative collaboration between Smash Mouth and Timmy Trumpet, one of Australia's beloved DJs known for mixing jazzy trumpet and bright piano with electronic dance music. While Smash Mouth will be the star Saturday night, Brazilian dance-house DJ Bruno Martini will close out the concert Sunday. Martini has seen a meteoric rise with roughly 1 billion streams on Spotify. He has produced music with Timbaland, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Two Latin Grammy-nominated musicians -Paula Lima and Vitor Kley -- will also perform. Paula Lima -- a weekly radio host, judge on Brazilian Idol and a Samba superstar - - will grace the stage for an energetic, funk concert Saturday. Brazil's trailblazer and popprodigy in Portugal, Vitor Kley will perform Sunday. In addition this year's diverse lineup will include: Adelmo Case (axe music); Two Latin Grammy Winner Marlow Rosado (salsa/merengue),Isra (Latin rock/rap); Latin Grammy Nominated Onze: 20 (reggae); James McWhinney of Big Mountain and

Vibes Up Strong (reggae/rock/roots); Isra (Latin rock/rap); and Zeeba (Brazilian Popular Music), the voice behind of the greatest hits of ALOK and Bruno Martini. Last year, in spite of the litany of challenges caused by the pandemic, the festival sur-vived and was the only Brazilian festival in the nation to occur live. In order to take place, the festival moved to Fort Lauderdale, limited the number of attendees and strict-ly followed CDC guidelines. This year, the festival is rebranded bolder and even more eclectic. Sameli said the festival is proud to now call Fort Lauderdale home, and thrilled to have Publix as its official tenth anniversary sponsor. “We pushed through and are determined to succeed,” said Sameli. “Mayor Trantalis and the City of Fort Lauderdale have been an incredible blessing. We are grateful that the City has embraced our festival. Mayor Trantalis recognizes the importance of our mission to promote multicultural unity. And the move to Fort Lauderdale has allowed us to host the festival on one of South Florida's most beautiful beaches. Tickets to this year's festival can be purchased online for $10 at BrazilianFestival.org. Kids under the age of 12 are free. The festival will take place from 12pm to 10pm on Sept. 18 & 19 at 1005 Seabreeze Blvd. HotspotsMagazine.com | 73

You may not be able to get the gym to do cable flies and dumbbell chest presses, but you can pump-up and build flexibility in your shoulders, chest, and arms with push-ups. Lie face down on the ground, with bent arms supporting your body. Proceed to push up to

arm's length. Pause, then lower to starting position. Perform 20 repetitions. Target your chest by doing a set of push-ups with your arms out as far as possible. Shoulders and biceps are especially worked when you do push-ups with your arms set at about shoulder width apart. Try targeting triceps by bringing arms in as close as possible with elbows facing outward. Do 20 reps of each of these push-ups and you'll feel a great upper body pump! Build flexibility in your back with toe touches. Stand with legs together and arms overhead. Proceed to bend over carefully and extend fingers to toes. Pause, then, rise to starting position. Perform 20 repetitions. Add a little extra resistance to this exercise by holding a small weight or a couple of books overhead while performing it. Of course, crunches are excellent for working abdominals and building core strength. Add bent knee leg lifts to your repertoire and you're bound to have a six pack. Lie face up with legs together and the upper body raised supporting the forearms. Proceed to raise the right leg up. Pause, then lower and raise the left leg. Perform 20 alternating repetitions with each leg. Work your core muscles, especially obliques with side bends. Stand with the right hand behind the head and the left hand on the left thigh. Proceed to bend to the left, lowering the left hand down the thigh. Pause, then rise to

starting position. Perform 20 repetitions, then, switch hand positions for another set bending to the right. Nothing tightens, tones, and builds glutes like lunges. You can do stationary lunges, or you can perform walking lunges during break time back and forth across a parking lot or up and down a corridor. Perform 20 alternating repetitions with each leg forward. This whole routine can be performed at home, in your back yard or at work one or more times a day. It is also a great warm-up routine in the morning before you shower and hit the road. Exercise is easy, no excuses! Get up! Get moving! It's contagious!

CELEBRATE ORGULLO'S 2021 FESTIVAL Explores the ART of ILUSIÓN How the Art of Drag, Creativity, Talent and Self-Expression Influence Our Daily Lives

The history of Drag is an evolution from a common theater practice to an award-winning form of entertainment that has gained legitimacy both on a national and international stage. The first person to describe himself as "the queen of drag" in the U.S. was William Dorsey Swann, born enslaved in Hancock, Maryland, who in the 1880s started also hosting drag balls in Washington, DC attended by other men who were former slaves, and often raided by the police, as documented in the newspapers. Drag as an art form has exploded largely thanks to the life and career of RuPaul Andre Charles — arguably the most famous drag queen in the world today. RuPaul's current claim-to-fame is his tenure as the host and face of the reality TV show RuPaul's Drag Race which has changed the history of drag.

By Andreus Quinones

“They guy never told me that he was dating anyone...” Dear Andreus, I was recently out at the bars with my boyfriend. We started drinking early in the evening with friends, so we were all far gone by the time we got to the bars. At one point during the night when my boyfriend and I went to the bathroom, a guy followed my boyfriend into the stall. I expected my boyfriend to push him out, but instead, he let him come in with him. The next thing I know, the guy is giving my boyfriend oral. Fair to say, I was furious. My boyfriend comes out, and when I said something, he just replied “It was all in fun, besides we are all drunk.” I find this incredibly disrespectful, and not sure about our relationship now. What should I do? Sincerely, Joe P. Dear Joe, If you find what he did disrespectful, then you need to have a conversation about boundaries. If you have never established those boundaries, then that might be the problem. He may not have realized that engaging with someone was an issue. I would sit down and calmly talk it over before you make any serious decisions about your relationship. This should give you some insight as to whether he was aware that what he was doing was not okay for you. Everyone does not have boundaries, neither does everyone always see relationships the same way. After you talk, you either both can agree on boundaries from here on out, or whether you want to continue with your relationship. Hope this helps!

Dear Andreus, I met a guy two weeks ago at a local bar. We hit it off and ended up going back to my place. After a night of amazing sex, and then breakfast together, I find out that he is dating one of my friends. They guy never told me that he was dating anyone, and I didn't even know my friend was dating someone. I don't know what to do. It was an honest mistake, and I am afraid that my friend will be mad with me. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation? Sincerely, Ronald J. Hi Ronald, In this situation, it is certainly not your fault. Your friend hadn't informed you he was dating someone, and the guy (who seems to lack integrity), didn't inform you either. Nothing happened with intent on your part, so you should not feel bad. Your friend might be upset about the situation, but he should understand your role in this, which is completely innocent. If he is going to truly be upset with anyone, it should be the guy he is dating. This might certainly be a test of friendship, and hopefully your bond is strong enough for him to take the mature route. In the future, since we know gays can be messy, it might be a good idea to ask questions in advance, with the hopes of an honest answer. Good luck!
