t’s not likely that you’ll find a bartender in Wilton Manors who’s as interesting or as varied as UWE SCHROEDER. As the founder of the leather-works brand, Wolf Cuff, and the de facto face of Grateful Paws Dog and Cat Rescue, Schroeder’s presence is rather ubiquitous in Wilton Manors. But what did he find behind a patron’s scrotum during an impromptu body search at the Alibi?

What’s your claim-to-fame?

Jan Milbyer is the founder of Grateful Paws, and I joined as a volunteer in about 2008. Jan hates her picture taken (laughs), so I became kind of the public face of Grateful Paws. As for fame? Well, in the world of social media, it seems that it takes very little to become famous. What about the unsung heroes, the activists, and volunteers that dedicate their lives to make the world a little better? But if I made you laugh, if I got you to thinking, and if I’m known as the guy that helps to rescue neglected and abused animals, that would be enough for me!

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Solingen, Germany, which is “The City of Blades.” It’s known for its quality arms and swords from medieval times, and today, for fine cutlery. It’s a beautiful town with forests, rivers and, of course, a magnificent castle.

What do you miss about it there?

The deep-rooted culture.

How long have you lived in South Florida?

For 21 years.

Things just fell into place. With family and friends over here, the opportunity opened up for this adventure. I had a good life and job over there, but I’ve always been the only adventurer in the family. I’ve always loved to travel, so living abroad was something I wanted to try out.

What part of South Florida do you live in?

In Fort Lauderdale.

What do you like most about living here?

The weather, big time!

Where do you hang out in South Florida?

On “The Drive.” I believe in community.

What South Florida venue do you miss that’s gone?

The tea dance at the Sea Monster.

If you had to live somewhere else other than here, where would you live?

In a secluded log cabin in the country.

Which one of your old jobs most prepared you for what you do now?

Social work, big time (laughs). As a bartender, you experience everything. From a young kid that just tested HIV positive, to a guest that lost a lover after decades. From the spoiled kid with attitude that’s spending daddy’s money, to the miserable grump that thinks you’re an emotional punching ball. So definitely social work. Thankfully, the vast majority of guests are wonderful, and we have a great time in front and behind the bar. It’s a job that’s defined by who you are!

How did you come up with the

name for Wolf Cuff?

“Wolf” was easy, since they’re the ancestor of all dogs. “Cuff,” because it’s a bit edgy without being fetish.

What’s the most special piece that you ever made for Wolf Cuff?

They’re all special, but the ones that I make for the fundraiser every year are closest to my heart.

Of all your annual events for Grateful Paws, which one was the most special to you?

The 10-year anniversary. It was amazing. The whole community came together, but we couldn’t have done it without Oscar Rosado.

The success belongs to him as much as me.

What pets do you have?

I have two. A 14-year-old lady Rottweiler-Dobermann, Sheera, and my three-and-a-half-year-old boy Doberman, Etu. What’s the craziest thing that you ever saw when you were bartending or doing security?

I could write a book (laughs), but here’s a cute one. We caught a small-time dealer in the club, and it was my job to do the body search.

When he got bitchy, I got a little rough. I found his ecstasy pills hidden behind his scrotum! He was banned for a few weeks. As soon as he returned, he comes up and offers to buy me coffee. And, serious as can be, he asked me if I could “rough” him up again in a more private setting (laughs). I thanked him for the coffee.

What’s the best event that you ever worked?

What’s your best characteristic?

Loyalty, empathy, and that I’m opinionated.

What have you been doing to keep yourself busy during the quarantine?

Like everybody else at the beginning, I went into pure survival mode, trying to comprehend what was happening. I got COVID very early, at the end of March 2020, and it took a while to recover. Lucky, I had a mild case. Our local “family” stayed in touch the best we could. I did a lot of thinking and reflecting during that time. Everything was on the table, including moving back to Europe. I tried to stay fit, and I absorbed any documentary on TV that I could find.

Will you ever retire?

From work? Any time (laughs). But never from animal rescue!

What’s the weirdest question that a customer asked you?

Can we do a porn together?

What celebrity did you act like a “fan” around?

When I met John Lewis, I trembled in his presence.

What’s the last thing that you looked at online? spiegel.de, which is a German newspaper.

Would you ever pose nude?

I’ve modelled in the past, and yes one time nude. The photographer was Dennis Dean, who’s a true artist by the way!

What’s the best place that you’ve ever visited?

The waterfalls in Puerto Rico, and Paris.

What do you want to live long enough to see?

That we get our shit together and save the planet.

What’s your favorite book?

In The Meantime.

What’s the best concert that you ever went to?

Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” in Miami, with a full orchestra and choir. It was breathtaking!

Do you still have your childhood blanket or stuffed animal?

Yes. It’s a small, beaten, grey, Jumbo elephant.

What’s something that you learned in life only when you got older?

That only today is guaranteed.

What did you learn from your parents?

My father died when I was very young. He was pretty messed up due to his upbringing in the Hitler youth, and he had no impact on me.

My mom is my hero. I learned from her that no matter how little you have, it’s enough to share. And to be true to yourself, to be honest even when uncomfortable, and to speak up against injustice.

Who’s your favorite performer?

For female, it’s LeNora Jaye. For male, it’s Antonio Edwards.

What’s your favorite quote?

“Never follow the herd, because you will always step in somebody else’s shit.”

How do you enjoy spending your time?

Cuddling with my puppies.

What celebrity do you have crush on?

Jake Gyllenhaal.

Who do you admire?

My mother!

If you could bring one person back from the dead, who would it be?

We’re not to mess with the universe, but given the chance I probably could not resist—my mom.

Where would you go in a time machine?

I’d go to two stops. One, to prevent the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. And two, to Germany 1933, to prevent the Holocaust and World War II. What are you afraid of?

Not death. I survived a serious heart condition at age 26, an aneurism in 2016. So, I can say that I met death twice. I am afraid of suffering, on the other hand. Needless and senseless suffering, and I won’t!

What’s on your bucket list?

To volunteer at an elephant rescue in Thailand.

Where can we see you?

At my home base, Alibi [in Wilton Manors]. I’m currently there Wednesday through Sunday, from noon until 7:00 p.m. Or just say hello if you see me out on The Drive.
