THERE WILL BE PRIDE CONTINUED

”This is great news for South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community and especially for Wilton Manors,” said Jeff Sterling, CEO of WMEG Community Marketing and Events which organizes the annual celebration, reacting to the news that city and county ofcials had given the event their approval. “The U.S. is projected to reach a vaccination level that creates herd immunity by mid-June. That fact, together with the safety protocols we will have in place, gives us condence about putting on a safe event,” Sterling said. The event typically attracts about 35,000 spectators and has a direct economic impact exceeding a million dollars. TWILIGHT PARADE

The parade this year will be held at 7 p.m. after the blazing summer sun goes down, providing not only cooler temperatures but the opportunity for parade participants to utilize glow sticks, battery-operated candles and other forms of lighting to illustrate the theme, “Out of the Darkness, Into the Light”. Judges will award cash prizes to the winners of the parade. Applications from businesses, non-prots and other groups wishing to take part in the parade are now being accepted. “We are thrilled Stonewall is back!” said Julietta Wenzel, president of the Wilton Manors Business Association. “This is good for the community, it’s healing for South Florida’s LGBTQ community and it’s also nourishment for the many small businesses in Wilton Manors who have struggled over the past year,” she said. APPEAL FOR SUPPORT

“We are appealing to corporations and businesses to support this important event and show community spirit by becoming a sponsor, entering the parade,

Pride 2021: “Out of the Darkness, Into the Light’

SunServe turned out in force for the Stonewall parade in 2019 with this winning entry. buying a booth and/or advertising in the ofcial Stonewall guide,” said Sterling, pointing to the expenses involved in staging an event of this kind. “Many people don’t understand that public safety comes at a cost — more than $50,000 just for police and medical services,” he said. “As a non-prot, we fund Stonewall Pride mostly by sponsorships and donations — both of which we need a lot more of this year,” he said. Admission to Stonewall Pride is $5. Stonewall recognizes the 1969 riot that took place at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, which was raided by police. The event triggered the gay rights movement. “Stonewall Pride is a reminder of the struggle for acceptance and equality by LGBTQ+ people and a celebration of who we are and how far we have come,” he said.

Salvo

Mule is flying high like an Eagle

NAMES and

Faces

A

By Mike Jeknavorian

s the founder and CEO of Eagle Bar Wilton Manors (and founder and owner of the former Club Silver in the same space) as well as a South Floridian since 1993, SALVO MULE has seen gay nightlife venues come and go. But how did Mule, an astute businessman, come up with the idea of opening an Eagle bar in South Florida in the first place? We asked him.

Where do you hang out in South Florida? Wilton Manors is now my favorite spot, but I still like to go to Sebastian Beach in Fort Lauderdale.

What’s your claim-to-fame? I don’t know about “fame,” but I’ve been involved with real estate since 1994, and that gave me the American Dream that every immigrant can hope for. It also gave me the opportunity to meet many people. When I opened Club Silver, the mature gay guys of South Florida appreciated me for giving them a place to call home. And then I came up with the idea of opening an Eagle bar in Wilton Manors. That became an instant success and a very popular venue. Although I can’t claim this success without mentioning my partners Fiorenzo Ranzenigo and Diego Anza, as well as a great general manager, Chuck King, and the amazing team that works there.

What real estate client do you remember the most? The gentleman that I sold the golf course to. I met him playing golf and convinced him to buy one (laughs).

Where did you grow up? I was born in Sicily near Palermo, and I grew up in Rome, where I completed my education. What do you miss about it there? My family and childhood friend in Sicily, and 3,000 years of history in Rome. What’s your favorite city in Italy? Rome. How long have you lived in South Florida? I moved here permanently in 1993. Why did you move here? My spouse Martin lived here, although I met him in Chicago. What part of South Florida do you live in? Fort Lauderdale. What do you like most about living here? I've seen Fort Lauderdale grow from a small beach town, to the gay mecca that is now. I love this.

If you had to live somewhere else other than here, where would you live? Barcelona. What’s the most exciting property that you’ve ever sold? A Golf Course near Orlando, and Rainbow Plaza in Wilton Manors. Rainbow Plaza is the location of iconic shops and Eagle Bar WM.

Who’s your favorite local performer? I’ve hired many performers and DJs, and I love them all. What’s your favorite musical theater song? I’m a Les Miserables guy, and my favorite song is “Stars.” How did Club Silver turn into Eagle WM? It was a business strategy. The Happy Hour crowd at Club Silver was great, but with the re-opening of Tropics, I realized that there was not enough business for the both of them. Thus, I pulled out of my drawer an old idea that I had of opening an Eagle bar in Wilton Manors to give the city a more international exposure. How often are you at Eagle WM? Ours is a late-night business, and very seldom will you find me there at that time. However, I’m always present for main events. What’s the most special event that you’ve had at Eagle WM? It’s been incredibly rewarding that national and international event-planners have contacted us to hold events such as RAM NY, BRUT, and FURBALL at Eagle WM. We’ve also had many in-house events such as Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors and a New Year’s Eve spectacular, to name a few. What’s the wildest thing that’s ever happened at Eagle WM? The Sunday drag show is an incredibly success event, which you would not expect to see at a leather bar. Continued >

Continued

What’s surprised you about owning a leather bar? That the tough look of our patrons doesn’t match the kindness of their souls. The leather community is very compacted and united, and everyone that I’ve met has been great. What’s the weirdest question that a customer has asked you? During the Club Silver period, a gentleman of about 75-years-old — who was a total stranger — came up to me, dropped on his knee, and asked me to marry him. With great disappointment, I learned later on that he won a bet that he made with his friends (laughs). What have you done with The Eagle to meet the challenges of the pandemic? Closing the doors in the middle of the season was the hardest thing that we had to do. Like all businesses, we followed the directions from the state and local authorities and complied with their orders regarding hygiene, security, and the wellbeing of our guests and employees. Which one of your old jobs least prepared you for what you do now? Nothing can really prepare you to be a gay bar owner!

A total stranger came up to me, dropped on his knee, and asked me to marry him...

What would your drag name be? Miss Meticulous. Will you ever retire? Never. What celebrity did you act like a “fan” around? Estelle Getty. What’s the best place that you’ve ever visited? Iguazu Falls in South America.

What are you an expert at? I think I’m a good negotiator. If God were to take you tomorrow, how would you like to be remembered? As someone that “did what he said, and said what he did.”

What’s your favorite band? Chicago. What’s your fondest childhood memory? The first time that I saw the Colosseum in Rome. What’s your favorite quote? “Better than yesterday; worse than tomorrow!” What’s something that you learned in life only when you got older? That everybody has a reason for their behavior. What did you learn from your parents? Respect. Who’s your favorite performer? Whoever can make me laugh. What’s your best characteristic? My smile. How do you enjoy spending your time? Boating, golfing and cooking. What celebrity do you have a crush on? James Brolin. Who do you admire? My friend Mark Hunter, who’s the coolest guy in Wilton Manors. If you could bring one person back from the dead, who would it be? It would have to be my mom. Where would you go in a time machine? To France, during the reign of Louis XIV. What would your last meal be? Spaghetti. What do you worry about? Nothing. I trust that everything will be okay. What are you afraid of? That our country’s division will slow down our progress. If you were a musical instrument, what would you be? A grand piano. Are you more like a sheep or a wolf? Definitely a wolf. Who depends on you? Right now my spouse Martin does, as he’s 87 and has Alzheimer’s.

What do you want to live long enough to see? A world free of discrimination.

Who are you closest with? My sister, and my best friend in Italy — thank God for WhatsApp.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Watching The Golden Girls, even though I’ve seen them hundreds of times.

What would your autobiography be called? An Italian in Florida.
