As I have mentioned almost every year, one of the best parts of doing the Annual Spa Edition (this is year #9) are the relationships the Hotspots staff have formed with the local spa owners. Every year we look forward to seeing them and spending some quality time with their staff. In addition, we get to meet new people when new spas come on board. What I have denitely learned from the spa owners and their staff is if you take care of your body on a regular basis, it will take care of you and make you look and feel younger for many years! 30 | Hotspots.LGBT

Island City Massage • Christian Perez 2312 Wilton Drive • Wilton Manors, FL 33305 954-882-0473 • ChristianPerezMassage.com

Island City Massage has been around for almost a year. Christian is a rising millennial who took over a small of ice at the Wilton Executive Suites and turned it into a spa oasis. He is part of a generation that seeks to create a healthier future for the residents of Wilton Manors, Florida. When I asked Christian about his philosophy he said: “Being a health professional involves having a genuine interest for the wellbeing of each client. I attend trainings, visit spas and research conditions such as sciatic pain, shoulder or neck pain and many others to sustain an ever growing massage therapy practice.”

I then asked him when he was visiting his next spa, and he told me that he would be taking the entire month of September to travel to Germany, Czech Republic, France and Spain to learn more about massage therapy and bring all of his indings back to Wilton Manors.

When you walk into Christian's oasis, it's very peaceful, with beautiful colors, sounds and smells. He sat down with me for a short consultation asking me a few questions with the most important being if I had any areas of concern. I told him that I have pain in my lower back and I have been told I carry pressure in my shoulders. He then asked me if it was ok to massage my gluteal area, and told me that I would be fully covered but wanted to be sure I was comfortable with that. I thought that was very considerate. During the massage Christian did a lot of work on my shoulders and used sports

massage techniques to stretch my lower back. He applied deep pressure to my buttocks area to release tension in my hips. Christian assured me that it would help my lower back and if I came for a massage once a month the pain would virtually go away (well he was right, it did help the lower back pain a lot). When he instructed me to turn over he covered my eyes with a lavender scented pillow which smelled so yummy and relaxing. During the massage he used lots of hot towels and hot stones, which always feel amazing. Before leaving he explained that after a deep tissue massage it is normal to feel tired and suggested that I drink a lot of water and avoid dehydrating substances such as alcohol or coffee. He also sent me home with some Arnica Oil, which he said I should apply to the areas of primary focus. He asked me to take a shower before going to bed and let hot water hit my lower back (as hot as I could take) then dry myself off and apply the Arnica oil, wait for it to dry and then go to bed. That helped so much! Christian offers a membership program, which is an amazing deal. If you agree to at least one 60 minute massage a month, all your massages are only $1 a minute, and that includes massages you book for your partner, your family, your friends, and even gift cards. Therefore my 90 minute massage would have only been $90 instead of $125 (60 minute massages are normally $85, but would only be $60 with membership). During the month of October, Christian will be offering free consultations to HotSpots readers interested in a massage. Both men and women are welcome to book a treatment. To make a reservation, simply visit his website or call/text him directly.

AWAY Spa • W Fort Lauderdale 401 N Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. Whotels.com • 954-414-8233 By now most of you have probably heard that the W brand has changed their in house spa to “AWAY Spa.” It was my irst visit to the AWAY Spa and boy was I impressed. I was greeted by the Spa Manager, Nicole, who gave me a tour of the new spa and explained all the bene its of their new line of products and their new services. The AWAY Spa is injected with amenities and treatments to help guests detox, retox, and repeat with a comprehensive new menu, refreshed space, and lineup of beauty products from Comfort Zone, a popular Italian spa wellness brand. Each spa experience begins with a complimentary Bright Elixir shot, which is made of healthy ingredients to cleanse and energize. This was delish! AWAY's menu includes ive categories: Quick Fix for tune-ups; Detox to cleanse from the inside out; Massage treatments to destress, go deep and nurture the skin; Face options to lift, irm and revive; and Body to buff, polish and glow from the outside in. The Glam Station, the irst for the AWAY brand, features a fully lit mirror with hair styling tools and an all-encompassing make up set with various services. unwind and get polish-perfect. Nicole and Alexis (Marketing Manager of the W), who are always so nice to me (much appreciated) wanted me to experience three of their luxury procedures. The irst was the Detox Body Wrap (50 mins, $145) with Diane who is the Lead Technician. This treatment includes a mud wrap beginning with a full body exfoliating peel and while

wrapped I enjoyed a neck and scalp massage and a conditioning hair treatment using their oi hydrating serum (there is an additional fee of $30 for the hair mask). The hair mask uses Liquid Spell to restore, bring softness, shine and tone. This systemic detox drains tissues and boosts

the body's natural detoxi ication systems. Next it was off to Adriana, who I have had so many times for different services at the W, but this time it was for a Prescription Facial (50 Min, $149). I am always so excited to see her and chat about our lives. The treatment includes a cleansing, exfoliation extractions, a massage and lastly a mask. Adriana added two things on to my treatment an Eye Recovery ($35), which is a Triple action eye mask that targets dark circles, puf iness and wrinkles. This can be added to any treatment, and a Glow Peel ($35), which boost brightness, smoothness and luminosity. This procedure is for inside and outside recovery,

34 | Hotspots.LGBT

and is fully customized to whatever your skin needs most: hydration, deep cleansing, age protection or treat sensitivity. Act fast as the Prescription Facial is part of SPATEMBER, and is available to the end of the month for only $99 (sunny.org). Then it was time for their Lux Pedicure with Deena ($105). She started with a warm towel around my neck which she dropped tranquility oil on. This was so soothing and smelled wonderful. During the entire pedicure. She then soaked my feet in the water with tranquility oil. This was followed by cleaning my feet and doing callus treatment (which I desperately needed). Then she used an active scrub on my feet and legs below the knees, followed by a detox mask with hot stones. The next step was a hydration lotion with hot towels. She then put a body strategist gel on the legs, and then buffed and shined my toes. This service revitalizes partied out fatigued feet. The AWAY Spa will be featuring an event to raise money for Breast Cancer on October 10. Check their website or right here in Hotspots Magazine for more details. Going to the W Fort Lauderdale Spa always made me feel pampered and with the new spa they took it to a new level of Excellency. Keep in mind, with any service at AWAY Spa you get free valet as well as the use of the pool area.

The Grand Resort and Spa 539 N. Birch Road • Fort Lauderdale 954.630.3692 • GrandResort.net As you know it would be impossible for me to get to all the spas in such a short amount of

time, so our fearless leader, Peter Clark, went to The Grand Resort and Spa. Since we were sending our leader, JD (Spa Owner) personally took care of him. Peter told me when he arrived JD sat down with him and told him about all their services, and Peter was impressed on how many services they now oer. JD then asked him about his body and

what he thinks he needed and Peter told him that he had lower back pain and shoulder pain and JD was able to make a direct correlation. He determined that Peter needed a deep tissue massage. JD brought Peter in to the room which Peter said was so private and so Zen. JD is so seasoned and professional he was able to pin point the spots Peter needed to work on and knew what level of pain he could take and worked around it. JD worked every part of his body, and described everything he was doing and why he was doing it and how it would help. Toward the end of the massage he put a steaming towel on Peters face and put pressure on it in key places and let the steam work on the muscles in his face.

After the massage Peter told me he felt incredible. On his drive home he felt relaxed and refreshed and that feeling stayed with him for a few days. JD told Peter about their new CBD facial, which is a ive step process that uses SamWell CBD and includes CBD Facial Cleanser, CBD Calming Mask, CBD Toning Mist, CBD Serum with Orchid Stem Cells, Apple Stem Cells, and Peptides, and CBD Facial Cream. As an advocate for the industry, JD is very knowledgeable on the science of CBD. There is a true science behind the edibles of CBD, and their ability to have medicinal bene its especially with epilepsy, cancer, certain psychological disorders and pain management. It's also true, that the topical application of CBD has also come into its own empowerment and has shown strong promise with anti-aging, anti-in lammation, and many other areas of wellness. While they don't make any speci ic claims so that they are in accordance with the FDA, they

do allow their customers to certainly speak for themselves and in their reviews share their personal experiences of the success of their products. CBD products do include a trace amount, (that is legally acceptable by the FDA) of less than 0.03% THC. This combined with a multitude of essential oil's well known for their medicinal properties (such as tumeric and arnica) help create what they call the entourage effect. A combination of different properties that work in conjunction with each other to have the highest possible impact. Sam Well CBD products stand apart from all of our competitors because whereas most competitors might include one or two essential oils some of their products carry up to 20 different essential oil's in conjunction with their organically grown CBD. And yet they deliver a far superior product at about half the price of their competitors. SamWell CBD is committed and dedicated to providing the highest quality product.

Lavish Manors 2717 N Dixie Hwy. • Wilton Manors, FL 33334 Lavishmanors.com • 954.396.6245

When I walked in I was greeted by handsome manager Jay, who was too shy to let me take his pic, but is de initely another good reason to visit Lavish Manors. I was then introduced to my Nail technician, whose name was also Jay. Jay who has been at Lavish nails for 4 years is originally from Vietnam, and has been doing nails for 15 years. You can catch him at LN Tuesday through Saturday. My irst procedure was the Mojito Spa

38 | Hotspots.LGBT

Pedicure ($40). When I sat in the luxurious massage chair Jay asked me if I wanted any water, wine or soft drink, and the lined the beautiful glass bowl so that it would be extra sanitary. He started by trimming my hoofs (LOL), then iled them. He then added soap and

scrubbed my feet with a brush. Jay the put on oil and callus remover and let my feet soak again in the warm water. He then removed my cuticles, followed by putting on more callus remover and scrubbed it in to my bad areas. The next step was to put on the Mojito scrub (which is light green) and he rubbed it onto my calves and feet and even went between my toes. After washing off the scrub, he put on oil and lotion and massaged them onto my feet and calves. It was then time for Jay to put on the Green Tea mask on my legs from my knees down. He washed this off with hot towels (who

doesn't love hot towels?). Afterwards he did some inal cuticle work, buffed my nails to a beautiful shine (I am not a polish girl) and ended the pedicure with some baby powder. My feet looked beautiful, and I was tingling from head to toe. OlÉ!

A.K.A Micro-needling (90 minutes - $149, but if you buy 3, you get 1 free). When Brian arrived they escorted him to the treatment room, which he said was lovely. He went there to treat medical effects of damaged skin. He con ided in me that he was nervous as he expected the Micro-needling to hurt, but he said it was actually massage-like and he almost fell asleep. The procedure started by Jimmy washing Brian's skin, followed by an AHA (alpha Hydroxy Acid) exfoliation which lifts off brown spots, freckles and sun damage. The next step is light extractions. After the extractions is when the Micro-needling starts using Hylaronic Acid, vitamin C and a vitamin B12 brightening therapy. This is followed by applying Hydrocortisone to calm the skin. The next step is a Corrective Serum which is customized to each client. And the procedure ends with a Moisturizer with SPF.

The Pedicure was directly followed by the classic manicure ($15) that included nail trimming, shaping, cuticle detailing and a lotion massage.

Brian (our Business Manager) went to J Cohen's Day Spa, which Jimmy Cohen opened December 12 of last year. Don't forget to wish him a happy One Year Anniversary in 3 months. The procedure that was done on Brian was the Collagen induction therapy

40 | Hotspots.LGBT

The bene its of this procedure is that it encourages the skin to make more collagen enriched tissue. The new skin gives a more even tone and texture. Overall you will see

tighter, irmer, younger looking skin. It's especially bene icial for those with damaged skin. Results can be seen immediately with best results in 3 to 4 weeks.

You leave the procedure with a take home kit which is everything you need for 7 days for aftercare. Since the service, which was 4 days prior to writing this article, Brian has seen a dramatic effect and so far 3 people have asked him what products he uses. He is very pleased with the results!

When I arrived at the Spa Cabanas for my treatments I was greeted by new owner

Carlos Rodriguez. Carlos purchased the spa from original owner Norman LaChance 7 months ago and is so happy that he did so. Carlos said: “I was excited by the opportunity to purchase Spa Cabanas and the irst 7 months has been better than I expected. I inherited an incredible clientele of both local and tourist who visits consistently and I am blessed with the best staff in town. True professionals. I look forward to continuing Norman's legacy, and keeping the caliber of wellness that Spa Cabanas has been known for.” Carlos informed me that I would be receiving a Swedish massage from Randy, and an Enzymatic Facial from Juan. I was then introduced to Randy (ok, to be honest I have lived in this town for over 20 years and know Randy) who explained that a Swedish massage (60-min $85) is a lighter touch and de initely more relaxing, and that is exactly what I needed that day. As he started

on my body, he quickly found my tense areas and asked if it was OK to massage those areas a little deeper. He explained that I would feel a little more pressure and that it could be a bit sore for a couple of days. At this point I already trusted him and said it would be OK. He then told me that if at any time it is too much to let him know. Randy is well trained and gave a great massage. I was so relaxed after the massage, and my body felt so relaxed, all I wanted to do was lay down. Lucky for me, my next treatment was only a few steps away.

This is an alternative to a chemical peel with similar eects and no downtime. Tis was a quick glowing lift and I did feel like I looked 10 years younger. Currently the Spa Cabanas has some great specials, and they are: Three 60 minute massages for only $174 (Reg: $285), and/or three 90 minute massages for only $245 (Reg: $375)

rain shower, and relaxation area. They advise everyone to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled spa service to take advantage of these areas. You can also get comfortable in a plush, heavenly robe and slippers. Relax with a cup of hot tea, and enjoy a light superfood snack. My Aesthetician, Trinh, picked me up in the waiting area and escorted me to her treatment room, which was lovely. Trinh has been working at Heavenly Spa for about a decade and loves her job. As she was performing the treatment I could hear the excitement in her voice as she was explaining the process and how I could achieve better skin. Generally when I talk to people about spas the number one excuse I get is “I don't have enough time.” Well Heavenly Spa has the cure for that with their 25 minute Hydra Facial. However, fret not, they do offer this amazing facial in a 50 and an 80 minute version. The Hydrafacial is performed by a very technologically advanced machine (FYI, there is no pain and no down time), and it feels amazing!! However, the 25 minute facial ($199, but the spatember special is only $99, but can add perk eye or lip for $149) does the critical 4 steps (deeply cleanses, exfoliates, extracts and hydrates skin with super serums illed with antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. It includes PerkEye or Lip Treatment), and the reason this is perfect for the busy man is that it accomplishes a lot in a short amount of time, as they know you want to look good but may not always have a ton of time for the spa. HydraFacial is for everyone and addresses

all skincare needs including: ine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and irmness, even tone and vibrancy, skin texture, brown spots, oily and congested skin, and enlarged pores. When I left the facial, Trinh gave me a mask to take home and some under eye treatment.

The Deluxe Hydrafacial includes the Signature 4-step treatment plus a booster to address speci ic skin concerns and LED light therapy to further reduce the signs of skin aging. Optional Perk treatment may be added for $49. 50min is $250 (Spatember promotion is $150) The Platinum Hydrafacial includes the deluxe treatment plus lymphatic drainage on face, neck and dé colleté to detoxify. 80min is $325 (Spatember promotion is $250) The irst 24 people to schedule appointments, receive a HydraFacial Water Bottle & a $50 credit towards a second HydraFacial appointment received by 10/31/19.

Cartagena de Indias is the most important colonial city of Colombia, and one of its main tourist attractions. Every good itinerary in Colombia that boasts of being one must include a visit to this wonderful and fascinating city. Located in the Colombian Caribbean, Cartagena de Indias is a large city with almost one million inhabitants. It mixes the prosperity of tourist and wealthier areas such as the Walled City, Bocagrande and Castillogrande, and the slums where there is a lot of poverty, insecurity, and where a tourist should not go. Around the walled city there are some interesting little neighborhoods through which you can walk safely during the day and reasonably safe at night. One of them is Gethsemane, a small neighborhood that extends just outside the Puerta del Reloj and is famous for its nightlife. If you visit Cartagena de Indias, without a doubt, you will end up having dinner or drinks, in addition to the Walled City, in Gethsemane in one of its most famous bars or nightclubs such as Café Havanna or Mr. Babilla.

Investigative reporting released by The Guardian revealed that Senator Rick Scott rejected $70 million in critically needed federal funds to address HIV in Florida while he was Governor. After years of decline, Florida’s number of HIV diagnoses reversed course and increased during the time that then-Governor Scott’s administration actively refused federal funds for HIV prevention and blocked grant funding for local governments to take action. “This is outrageous and irresponsible. This reporting indicates that Senator Scott purposefully worked against public health, directly endangering Floridians and keeping Florida among the highest states for HIV transmissions in the nation,” said Equality Florida HIV Advocacy Project Director Alejandro Acosta. COME OUT, COME OUT WHEREVER YOU ARE

By Troy Maillis

Till Death Do Us Part?

National Coming Out Day (October 11) dates to 1988, and commemorates the previous year’s Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. It is celebrated by wearing pride symbols (including pink triangles, rainbow flags, and lambda signs) and generally presenting a positive LGBT presence. But perhaps the best known symbol of the day is a portrait done by Keith Haring. The logo brilliantly presents Haring’s simple graphic style, as a figure emerges from the proverbial closet. The colors are consistent with those used throughout Haring’s career - bright, neon hues that form exciting relationships.

So guess who’s the latest “celebrity couple” to file for divorce? Wait for it—the Palin’s. That’s right—those Palin’s—the “Christian” Palin’s. As first reported by Anchorage Daily News, court documents appeared to show that Todd Palin filed for divorce from Sarah Palin after more than 30 years of marriage. I’m not one to revel in someone else’s misery, but Sarah Palin and her YEARS of hypocrisy deserve it. In her quest for power she used her Bible to promote family values, yet her daughter was posting homophobic rants (now deleted) and getting knocked up outside the sanctity of marriage. Russia is so 2008. I guess she will now be seeing divorce from her house!
