Sarah Paulson flies over the cuckoo’s nest Ryan Murphy, the man who currently owns most of television, has another show coming. It's called Ratched, and you'll need to reach back to at least the 1970s to get the title's reference, because that was when the film adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and, for the purposes of this explanation, Best Actress for Louise Fletcher, who played the monstrous Nurse Ratched. For this upcoming project – already given a deal for two seasons and 18 episodes – newcomer Evan Romansky has created an origin story, one that will star Murphy regular Sarah Paulson as a younger version of the nurse who grew to be a demon of the mental

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 4

eek 8 of All Stars 4 started out with the girls noticing that the workroom had been made over with pics of Judy Garland. In walks Ru who tells the girls that she calls all her best friends her best Judy's, and that for the maxi challenge they would be making over all their best Judy's by putting transforming them to their own drag sister (family resemblance is required). They would also have to choreograph and perform a very special musical performance to and as Judy Garland. In the end the top 2 were Naomi and Monet who each won a trip for 2 to Iceland which included a 4 night stay and 1st class airfare, and their best Judy's each won a $1,000 gift card to Klein, Epstein and Parker. Now let me just say Naomi killed the Lip Synch for Legacy (take note children) and sent Manila home.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Manila once again for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

How has your life changed since you were on” Drag Race?” It's just been getting better and better. I have enjoyed that I have been working off drag since drag race season 3 and making a pretty decent living.

What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as a RuPaul Alumni? My all-time favorite is when I get to go to Manilla in the Philippines. It's lovely, as they named the city after me…LOL! When I go there it feels like home, even though I wasn't born there (my mother was). However, I really enjoy going everywhere, even the smallest towns.

What's Ahead for Manila? Well I have a music video dropping today called “Go Fish.” The video has the message that you get dealt a hand and play it the best you can, and don't forget you can always pick another card. It's the first single off my upcoming album “Rules,” coming out February 15 on itunes.

You can also buy my Manila doll on my website at ManilaLuzon.com. For more information on Manila, you can go to her website mentioned above or follow her on Facebook.com/manilaluzonfanpage or Instagram.com/Manilaluzon

How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back, and if so what made you come back? It was super exciting, and a nice notch on my belt. I am one of the very few that can say I have been asked to be on all stars more than once. I said yes immediately, as this opportunity doesn't come very often.

How did you prepare differently for all stars 4 than you did the first two times time you were on the show? I went balls to walls and contacted all of my favorite designers. I sketched away many ideas as I wanted to impact the runway. I also went shoe shopping non-stop. It was a lot of fun.

Was it easier to get eliminated with your husband there? I got married last Christmas. We eloped to Las Vegas. When I had to pack up that suitcase of drag, at least he was there to help me. He is such a great support and I love him for that.

Has your hubby asked you to put him in drag since? We did do a photo shoot of us in those same outfits, so I did have to put him back in drag.

Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win and why? I'm still rooting for my girl Latrice…my right or die. If she can't win, I think Trinity has a really good chance. Hotspots.LGBT Hotspots.LGBT| | 33 33

Its sexy, it's sensual, and since the cast is so small you fall in love with each of the performers. When you leave the theater, you are not only thinking about the acrobatics, but about love and human rights. What does the future hold for the 2 of you? Fort Lauderdale is going to be the irst time we do the show in the United Stated on land. We did the show in Barcelona this summer and it was so well received. We expected it to be a gay audience, but there were many straight people who fully embraced the show. So in the future, we plan to take this show all over the world. Since you met, did you always work together? Yes, we are inseparable. How did you come up with AirOtic? It started because we participated in “Italy's Got Talent,” and I proposed on live TV. At that time there were no Gay rights in Italy, so it was a taboo situation. Afterwards everybody freaked out, but the video went viral and we got over 4.5 million views. We also got a lot of interviews and exposure. I was working on a lot of cruise lines and I got contacted by NCL to do a surprise act on the Atlantis Cruise line. The owner of Atlantis, Rich Campbell, saw it and wanted to book us in his other cruises. I told him I will come up with a full show, and he loved the idea. There is where AirOtic was born. 8 Ways I’m Snatching My Happiness Back in 2019 I'll say it: The past few years have been a fucking nightmare. The climate in this country – and, arguably, the world – is so volatile that it's a wonder any of us get a good night's sleep. I find myself angry, negative and depressed for no good reason, but at the end of the day how much does any of the shit we put ourselves through really matter? After a lot of reflection, I've come to realize that it doesn't. None of it. Not a single thing impeding your or my happiness is worth what we're feeding it. So why not stop? I am – starting now. Here's how I'm snatching back my happiness in 2019.

1

Allowing myself to be proud of me My grandmother – the one who disowned me for being gay – used to talk a lot about the importance of humility. In fact, she proselytized the importance of many “Christian” ideals, but rarely exercised them herself, especially where love and acceptance is concerned. And that's the primary problem with people trying to teach you to be you: They have no goddamn idea what they're talking about. As a result, I grew up being ashamed of who I was while not allowing myself to celebrate the growth and progress I make as a human being every day. But that stops here. I have so much to be proud of as not only a man but a gay man. I'm young(ish), successful, blessed in so many ways, and I've done all my adulting on my own. That deserves a big pat of the back – and I'm giving it to myself this year.

23 5 4

Not giving into short-term gratification

I love shopping. If we're hunting for clothing and home-good bargains, I'm there in a jiffy. But it's an expensive habit to maintain. I update my wardrobe and add décor to my homes more often than I'd like to admit (even though my bank account serves as a constant reminder), but I've recently made a resolution that nothing new comes through these doors for the entire year. How will I do that? I've started by cutting up credit cards and unsubscribing from every marketing email that has landed in my inbox since January 1. It's a virtual ghost town in there these days. The next phase is to start editing my closets and my homes for items I can sell to help reach my New Year's saving resolution, which this year is in the double-digit thousands – all cash in hand. It's lofty, but I'm determined – and that's all the motivation I need.

Downsizing my entire life

I'll start selling my material possessions this year because I don't need them where I'm going. My longterm goal for 2019 is to unload all my real estate, purchase a van that's suitable for daily life, and hit the road. As I've sat in my properties – alone – for the past few years, I've had plenty of time to think, and the question I keep coming back to is, what the hell are you doing here? The answer is nothing. I'm doing nothing where I am but wasting the time I could be spending out there in the world experiencing life instead of literally watching it pass me by. It's a major change that'll signify the start of the second half of my life story, but I eat challenges like this for breakfast.

Finding more people who raise my spirits

Cutting out alcohol so I can remember what I'm really like

I don't like to put down our own LGBTQ community, but we can be real cunts to one another. It's not just us, though. There are so many people out there who are committed to infecting everyone around them with their negativity that I sometimes dread leaving the house. Everybody has an attitude these days, and for what? Who knows, but I'm canceling all my dates with those downers and only giving time to people who make me feel good about myself. Thank you, next.

Many people have a difficult relationship with alcohol, myself included. And as I reflect on the over 20 years that I've allowed alcohol to ruin relationships, squander opportunities and otherwise fuck me up physically, mentally and emotionally, I have to consider the alternative. So beginning at the top of the year, I decided to live alcohol free until April 1. That's not the date when I'll start drinking again, but rather a date that gives me enough time to clear my head, concentrate on my fitness goals and then weigh my options. Will I be the better person I want to be, or am I a dick sober too? Time will tell.

Avoiding as much political media as I can I'm turning off the TV, changing the settings on the news I receive, and avoiding al political debates on social media. It'll drive you f*cking nuts if you give into it, and we can't let the trolls control us. Look the other way and have nothing to say is my new motto. It's everybody for themselves out there.

7

Practicing more self-care More hot baths, facials, massages, meditation, gym classes, yoga, (safe) SEX, and whatever else makes my mind and body feel like I deserve this. Because I do.

8

Refusing to do anything I don't want to do I'm already very good at saying no, but I have a conscience and I sometimes feel bad when I'm direct to someone who's kind. I don't want to hurt their feelings, but I'm also not willing to engage in situations that bore me or make me uncomfortable or that cost me money I don't want to spend. Thank you for asking, but I'm politely declining, perhaps for eternity. I don't owe you an answer why either.

Get out there and snatch back your happiness this year too, friends. Clock's ticking.

Everyone knows Palm Beach is the cold-

weather playground for America’s rich and powerful. Just down the road a bit from the Winter White House, MarA-Lago, are the quaint luxury retail shops and gourmet restaurants in this resort hamlet. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be invited to dinner at a lovely

restaurant called Buccan, as a late holiday get-together. I put on a festive shirt and drove up to Palm Beach County for what turned out to be an awe inspiring evening! When we arrived, we valeted the car and entered the elegant yet understated lobby bar to have a drink with our friends until our table was readied. Even though

we were hobnobbing with the social elite, we felt very comfortable and welcomed by the gracious staff. Ruth Madoff sat two chairs over holding her dog, as we lounged on the sofa, sipped our martinis and chatted with each other. This is definitely the kind of place you might run into everyone from an old friend from Ft.

Lauderdale, to a celebrity or even one of Trump’s kids! Buccan specializes in small plates. Since we were a group of five, we ordered a little of everything in multiple courses and paired each with Champagne and wines from the extensive list that would enthrall even the most experienced Sommelier. We were seated at a large, round table and greeted by our server, who turned out to be very knowledgeable both about the cuisine and the wine list. We began with an assortment

of oysters on the half shell…Wianno (my all-time favorite from my days working at Morton’s) and Malpaque. The clean and flavorful oysters paired well with the bubbly selected by our host. Next, we moved on to delicious Ahi Tuna with fish “vin” served on wonton crisps with bed of avocado. Hearty Short Rib Empanadas were delightfully plated with salsa criollo and aji Amarillo, a Peruvian yellow chili pepper. A whimsical Hot Dog Panini with sauerkraut, gruyere cheese and mustard rounded out the variety of appetizers. We washed it all down with crisp glass of Pinot Grigio.

Our third course included one of my new obsessions… Vietnamese Octopus Salad, tossed with peanuts, roasted carrot and a sweet and spicy Vietnamese condiment called Nuoc cham. Succulent jumbo shrimp sautéed in Scampi sauce were a delight, served on grilled bread with arugula. Warm Brussels Sprouts replace romaine in an original Caesar salad offering, topped with a Parmesan crisp and white anchovy filet. Although the menu mostly consist of sharables, Buccan does offer several full sized “Chef’s Selection” entrees to tantalize your taste buds including Florida Snapper and local Swordfish. We ordered up the Prime NY Strip Au Poivre, a green peppercorn sauce, served with an orgasmic side of celery root gratin and garlic spinach. We supplemented our steak with the Maccarones Carbonara… ravioli stuffed with maitake mushrooms, finished with crispy bits of ham, peas and Parmesan cheese…both superb! After that delicious feast, we could not leave without dessert. A square of Key Lime pie topped with elegantly toasted meringue and a side of coconut ice cream and an order of beignets with chocolate and caramel sauce for dipping were a hit as we sipped on individual French press coffees. Buccan is open for dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5pm to 10pm and Friday and Saturday 5pm to 11pm. Happy Hour is offered from 4pm to 6pm weekdays. Be sure to check out lunch at the Buccan Sandwich Shop located just next door, featuring hot and cold sandwiches, salads and homemade desserts. Reservations are highly recommended.

KAREN PENCE magine walking into art class one day in grade school and finding that none other than Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, is your teacher. For a lot of kids, such a thing would be pretty exciting, regardless of how said kid's parents voted in 2016. I mean, hey, how many kids can claim that they have a B-level celebrity as a teacher? Also, her watercolor paintings are actually really good. What isn't good is the school at which Pence is teaching. Because that school, the K-8 Immanuel Christian School in Virginia, bans LGBTQ people. No gay teachers. No queer students. No lesbian lunch ladies. They don't even want LGBTQ allies working for, attending or sending their kids to the school. And people are a little, well, grossed out that the Vice President's wife would take a job at such an unwelcoming school. It's worth pointing out that Pence worked at this same school for a dozen or so years back when her husband was a U.S. Representative. So why is it a big deal that she's going back? Because her spotlight is brighter now. Her platform is elevated. When she was a Congressman's wife teaching there was, while still gross, pretty low-key. But no more. Now she's doubling down on a school that very explicitly discriminates against LGBTQ people. And from the very highest reaches of government that's being condoned and encouraged, and it's wrong. This is just piling on to the harm this administration has done to LGBTQ people,

whether it's reminding guidelines that aimed to protect LGBTQ students or banning transgender troops. Not surprisingly, Pence has received criticism from the Human Rights Campaign, the ACLU and GLAAD. "Why not teach at a school that welcomes everyone, instead of choosing one that won't serve LGBTQ kids, kids of LGBTQ parents?" JoDee Winterhof, senior vice president for policy and political affairs at the HRC told HuffPost. "The Pence's never seem to miss an opportunity to show their public service only extends to some." “This sends a terrible message to students,” the ACLU tweeted, while GLAAD encouraged people to sign a petition telling Pence and Immanuel Christian School “to stop discriminating against LGBTQ students.” But the Pences also pissed off Lady Gaga. “To Mike Pence, who thinks it's acceptable that his wife work at a school that bans LGBTQ, you are wrong,” Gaga said during a recent performance. “You are the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian. I am a Christian woman and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice and everybody is welcome.” That is, of course, not the Pence brand of Christianity where being a Christian and discriminating against LGBTQ people go hand in hand and cannot be separated. There is some confusion about what this means when it comes to freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Does Karen Pence have those rights? Yep. Can the school legally

So why not teach at a school that welcomes everyone? Unless, of course, Pence doesn't welcome everyone. ban LGBTQ people? Yep. Does reporting on this story and/or criticizing Pence constitute an “attack?” Nope. It's not an attack to call someone out for being awful and hateful. And it's still not an attack when you call someone out for being awful and hateful when they're doing it in the name of religion. The funny thing about freedom of religion and speech is that they work both ways. In other words, not everyone believes the same shit you do or hates the same people you do and when you're a public figure you're going to be called out no matter what you do. So why not teach at a school that welcomes everyone? Unless, of course, Pence doesn't welcome everyone. And, yeah, she has every right to believe that LGBTQ people aren't deserving of equality, but that's a view held by a smaller and smaller group of increasingly hateful and reactionary people. Cling to that

view if you choose, but don't be surprised to get shit for it. Mike Pence rejects the idea of even questioning a school's wholesale rejection of LGBTQ people. “To see major news organizations attacking Christian education is deeply offensive to us,” he said in a statement, adding that “this criticism of Christian education in America should stop.” There's that pesky freedom of speech thing again. Criticism must absolutely continue. It's the bare minimum we can do in the face of injustice.

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Five Ways to Get Fit Without Going to the Gym

W

e're well into 2019, so what's you're excuse for not keeping those resolutions about getting fit in the New Year? If you don't have time for the gym or you don't have cash for a membership, listen up! There are some great exercises you can do to tone-up, lose weight, and build cardio-vascular endurance and you can do them at home, at work or just about anywhere. Here are 5 of my favorites. Walking, jogging and running are the easiest, most affordable ways to get moving and stay active. Whether you're casually walking the dog, engaging in high-intensity wind sprints, or jogging on the beach with a

96 | Hotspots.LGBT

1 buddy, just make sure to stay consistent and enjoy yourself. Try taking a couple of hand- held weights with you as you walk; pause and

do some calisthenics in the park, anything that keeps your walk or run challenging and interesting. Join a walker's or runner's group for added companionship.

Squats can be done anywhere, anytime since they only require your body weight. Squats help tone your quads, hamstrings and butt, and improve posture, circulation and even digestion. How do you perform them? Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-

Push-ups, pull-ups, and chin-ups are great exercises for pumping-up and building upper body strength. All you need is a bar in a doorway or on the patio of your home. If you're not quite strong enough for these yet, you can start with modified push-ups against the wall or a countertop and eventually work your way up to harder versions of these exercises.

width apart and arms at your sides. Lower your body, back straight, into a seated position, with your feet resting on your heels. As you lower into the squat position, raise your arms out in front of you for balance. As you get stronger, you can hold a weight in your hands for added resistance.

2

3

Running up and down stairs for 15 - 20 minutes is a high-intensity workout that targets every muscle in your lower body. Running the stairs also builds endurance and burns loads of calories. While you may not be ready for such a workout, start lighter, more sensibly during the day, by taking the stairs instead of using the elevator. Try parking farther away from your destination when you get to work or go shopping. Remember, the important thing is to increase your steps and keep that body moving.

4

5

Crunches are great for strengthening core and getting six-pack abdominals. Lie flat on the floor, place hands behind your neck to cradle your head, now bend your knees keeping your feet flat on the floor. Crunch your torso and trunk as you bring your elbows toward your knees. Repeat and repeat until you feel that delicious burn in your tummy and mid-section. Remember, the best way to stay in shape is to enjoy yourself and keep consistent with whatever style of workout that turns you on!

need ADVICE

By Andreus Quinones

Feeling Awkward Dear Andreus, I am at my wits end, and don't know what to do. I have been in a relationship for 1 year, and we recently moved in together. It has changed everything. He has begun to try and impose certain rules on me. I am very sociable, and he is extremely introverted. He does not like going out, and doesn’t want me going out at all. I am used to going out with my friends and having them over, but he does not like it, and tells me constantly that he is all I need. I have told him that my friends are important to me, then he says that I am putting them before him. I don't want to lose him, but I certainly don't want to lose my friends. Sincerely, Craig R. Dear Craig R., That is a very tough situation. The reality is that there always must be a healthy balance between your friendships and your relationships. Don't ever exclude your friends from your life because you are in a relationship. Real friends are the foundation of our lives, and when things fall apart and when they come together, friends are there. No one should ever be trying to interfere with your friendships, if they are healthy friendships. Also, it is not healthy to be up under each other every moment, 24/7. That is the easiest way to stress a relationship. Both people need breathing space, so that you better appreciate the time you have together.

Dear Andreus, My boyfriend is bisexual. I know that he also likes to have sex with women, and it never really bothered me until recently. He has brought a couple of female friends home and slept with them in our place. He tells me that he loves me, and that I should not be concerned with these flings, but it makes me so uncomfortable. I think it didn't bother me when I didn't see it happening. What do I do? Sincerely, Feeling Awkward Dear Feeling Awkward, This is indeed an awkward situation, but you knew the possibilities when you decided to be involved with someone who is bisexual. Clearly, he is happy having a relationship with you while fulfilling other needs with his female sex partners. However, you must set boundaries. If you are okay with him being bisexual, good for you. But you must come to some type of agreement, such as not engaging in intimate situations with his female partners in your home. I think it is simply a question of respect. So, tell him how you feel. You are not asking him to stop his rendezvous, rather that you just don't want to witness them.
