SAGE Book Group presents Insomniac City: New York, Oliver and Me by Bill Hayes at the Stonewall National Library & Archives (1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort

Lauderdale) from 11am to 12pm. Bill Hayes came to New York City in 2009 with a one-way ticket and only the

vaguest idea of how he would get by. But, at forty-eight years old, having spent decades in San Francisco, he craved change. Grieving over the death of his partner, he quickly discovered the profound consolations of the city's incessant rhythms, the sight of the Empire State Building against the night sky, and New Yorkers themselves, kindred souls that Hayes, a lifelong insomniac, encountered on late-night strolls with his camera. And he unexpectedly fell in love again - with his friend and neighbor, the writer and neurologist Oliver Sacks (Awakenings, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, etc.) whose exuberance is captured in funny and touching vignettes throughout the book. What emerges is a loving tribute to New York and a portrait of Sacks at his most personal and endearing, from falling in love for the first time at age

seventy-five to facing illness and death (Sacks died of cancer in August 2015).

The Miami Beach Botanical Gardens presents their Second Saturday Seminar: How To Create Ecologically and Sociologically Sustainable Landscapes with Steve Woodmansee from 10am-12pm. Kathy Griffin Laugh Your Head Off Tour comes To Miami

By Scott Holland

K

athy Grif in has won two Emmy's, one Grammy, is a New York Times best-selling author, and is a Guinness World Record–holder for “most stand-up specials by a comedian.” In 1996 she had her irst major TV role in Brooke Shields's sitcom, Suddenly Susan. After that she had a string of hour-long comedy specials on Bravo and her own reality show, and still one of my favorite shows, My Life on the D-List. Since that show ended she has done a lot more stand up specials, many tours, hosted E!'s Fashion Police (replacing her friend Joan Rivers), hosted a talk show and much more. She was more popular than ever, when the infamous mask incident happened. The image triggered a rare instance of bipartisan agreement of disgust and disapproval. Due to this, her tour was cancelled, she was ired from CNN's New Years Eve special which she cohosted for 10 years, and many friends abandoned her. She was also put on the no ly list, the inter pole list (still on), is detained at every airport, had to deal with death threats to herself, her mother and her family, and was forced to go overseas to make a living. Finally, last June, she brought her “Laugh Your Head Off Tour” (you can see by the name

28 | Hotspots.LGBT

she is not hiding from the incident) to North America. The tour sold out New York City's Carnegie Hall in one day, and is about to come to the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, September 12.

Why did now feel like the right time to tour again in the States, where you're still receiving death threats? You know, I talked to other people who'd been in scandals, trying to negotiate how much time I would need. I'm trying to explain what happened to me in such a way that people can put themselves in my shoes and say, “You know, she might be annoying, but this is not right. I don't think I'd like it if this happened to my mom, or my aunt, or my sister, or my cousin or my kid. Having lived through it, I feel I'm on a comedy mission to tell people that we need to talk about this. After I kick the bucket, I want some baby gay or young female comedian or young person of color who has a dream to say, This bitch did it at 57! Are you feeling redeemed? I am performing for thousands of people in places I was told I would never work again. The accidental president said “Kathy Grif in

calls from during bad times didn't feel the same way. And it was harder when I would reach out and say, “I need you,” and some people were just not having it. Most people avoided me. Who is your least favorite and most favorite celebrity? Least favorite is Andy Cohen, most favorite Kelly Ann Conway's husband Do you regret anything from the last year? My only regret is that I went live and apologized. I take it back!

will go down.” Well I am up and louring. Heck I was the only standup comic at the Whitehouse correspondence dinner. I was invited by the Washington Blade and I got into ights with at least 4 cabinet members! They also said I would never play Miami again and I am selling out the Arsht Center, how great is that!

Also, one of the reasons this tour is important is that it's allowing me to go city to city and tell people they can hate the picture all they want. I have no problem with that. But I want everyone to know that if your 13-year-old kid takes that same picture and puts it on Twitter, he or she shouldn't be put under a two-month federal investigation.

At one point you were accused of being in Isis, did that affect you? That's so ridiculous….. I can't be in Isis, they don't even have gay bars there!

Many comedians have criticized Trump, and some have been faulted for not, do you hold any bitterness toward comics who have played it safe? I think comics who don't talk about Trump, is bullshit. I really think it's the responsibility of a comedian to push the envelope.

Why do you think you deserve the support of celebrities when so much of your success has been based on mocking them? Because those same celebrities know that when the chips are down—and when they have been down—I am absolutely there for them. It was painful when certain people I was happy to take

What should we expect from your “Laugh Your Head Off Tour”? This tour is about playing the great halls...that's why I am playing the Arsht Center. I will have lots of all new material from the most corrupt administration in history! I want the community to know Jefferson Beauregard Session is deteriorating LGBT rights day in and day out. We need to be concerned about Kavanaugh, and Ober ield…..Florida watch your back…how are they going to gerrymander the polls this time? I also might have to throw in a moment of Oprah or Ryan Seacrest. The show is still ever changing, but I will still be talking about being on the news every 3 seconds .Out of the blue, Sarah Huckebee started taking about me again….and tried to tie me in with Samantha B, and Roseanne (who is a Nazi now). I am so bitter that ABC gave her a multi-million dollar comedy show and not me!

What's Ahead for Kathy? New Year's Eve live with Kathy and Stormy….Wouldn't that be AMAZING? LOL!! There are also multiple things going on at team Grif in…..all pro gays! Also, one of my dreams is, as a lot of comedians have done, a seminal ilm role. I'm de initely still hopeful. But do you know what my real dream is? I would love to do a speaking tour.

To purchase tickets for Kathy's “Laugh Your Head Off Tour” at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, go to: ArshtCenter.org.

Brace yourself for more Less Than Zero

Documentary Now! Loves Company We see you out there, those of you devoted to Documentary Now! You're not the mainstream TV viewer, to be sure, but you know a good Bill Hader-as-Spalding Gray segment and Errol Morris

You're not the mainstream TV viewer, to be sure, but you know a good Bill Hader-as-Spalding Gray segment and Errol Morris parody when you see one.

parody when you see one, and that means you deserve some kind of television entertainment. Well, the upcoming season of the acclaimed IFC series, created by former Saturday Night Live cast members Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers and Hader, which

32 | Hotspots.LGBT

in each episode parodies a different classic documentary – from Grey Gardens to Stop Making Sense – is going to get even more specific. They'll be tackling D.A. Pennebaker's 1970 film, Original Cast Album: Company. It featured the first cast of Stephen Sondheim's legendary musical – Dean Jones, Elaine Stritch, Beth Howland, Donna McKechnie – as they spent all night in a recording studio working on the cast album for that show. The DN! version of this will be called Original Cast Album: Co-Op and will feature guest stars Taran Killam (SNL), James Urbaniak (Venture Bros.), comedian John Mulaney, Tony Award-winning star of Hamilton, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and School of Rock's Alex Brightman. We'll be watching, if for no other reason than to see who'll be singing the fake version of “Ladies Who Lunch.”

If you were around during the 1980s, you remember Less Than Zero, the shocking novel that exposed the depraved lives of a bunch of fictional rich kids in Los Angeles. There were things in that book that cannot be described in polite company even now, and it put its young author Bret Easton Ellis on the map. Then came a hilariously dorky just-say-not-to-drugsand-behave-yourself film version in 1987 starring Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz and Robert Downey Jr. What endures from that debacle is a very cool soundtrack album and a cult following of snickering Gen Xers. Now Hulu has decided to give it another

DOWNEY go, this time as a TV series from Lost writer-producer Craig Wright. It'll star The Walking Dead's Austin Abrams as Clay, the bisexual drug-addicted college freshman home for Christmas break contending with his equally drugged friends, as well as Lily Donoghue (The Goldberg's) and Cooper Koch (Fracture). We're hoping it's a nice period 1982 series, with all the fashion adventures and new wavey details that promises. And it had better be bleak, like noholds-barred, really, really, bleak. Otherwise you might as well just watch Degrassi.

By Chris Azzopardi 'A Simple Favor' actress on her fluid sexuality, kissing Blake Lively and advocating for 'Pitch Perfect' lesbian love

The pitch is perfectly crazy in Anna Kendrick's walk on the dark side

of filmmaker Paul Feig's warped sense of humor, A Simple Favor. It's martini-sipper mom versus martini-swigger mom. Target mom versus Met Gala mom. Aspirational versus extra. It's regular mom-meets-mom business, a modern mom-com – until Emily (Blake Lively) goes missing. Emily's sudden disappearance prompts Stephanie (Kendrick) to mount an investigation by employing her keen Nancy Drew smarts and posting distressed clips of herself on her dorky craft vlog. (Friendshipbracelet tutorials are just gonna to have wait.) A bit camp? Yep. A bit queer? Obviously. And naturally so, as Kendrick's 15-year career is steeped in queerness: at age 17, she cut her acting teeth on Camp, the 2003 teen musicalcomedy directed by out filmmaker Todd Graff; as Beca, she brought covert aca-gayness to the three-part Pitch Perfect franchise; and in 2014, the 33-year-old Oscar-nominated actress slipped into Cinderella's glass slippers for

38

| Hotspots.LGBT

Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. And her long, impulsive kiss – “just another Tuesday,” Emily notes – with Lively in A Simple Favor, well, it's not exactly straight, she says. Here, the longtime ally talks about attempting to allow the lesbian love to bloom between queer-coded Pitch Perfect leads Beca and Chloe (Brittany Snow), what irks her about self-congratulatory reactions to celebs coming out and, when it comes to her own sexuality, being open like Emily.

A car sing-along, a little camp, some martinis and a mom makeout sesh: Anna, you sure know what the gay community wants at this point in your career, don't you? (Laughs) Oh my gosh! I wasn't thinking of it in that way, but yeah, it is kind of camp. It takes itself a little seriously, but we're always winking or having fun. It's bright and colorful, and there's an unabashed campiness to it – even though the stakes are very real in places.

You didn't recognize a queer sensibility going in? To be honest, when I was going in, there was just so much to play with. I remember having one of those conversations with Blake where we both felt like, “Are we high right now? Are we having a stoner conversation?” Because we were talking about how in a traditional comedy there's a slider that you're on from how subtle to how broad, and with this it felt like you weren't just on this linear slider – you were in three dimensions, and you could go to all these places. It was so much fun as actors to have that, and I know that sounds really stoner-y and existential and dumb. But the world Paul created had so much possibility, and so I wasn't really thinking about one group. I was barely getting my brain around what the movie was in the first place! But I think Stephanie is very much an underdog and she's finding her place in the world. I feel like that's something that queer people can relate to at one point in their lives or another. What was it like coming to set for the first time and seeing the giant painting of Blake-asEmily's vagina front and center in Emily's front room? OK, this is actually really interesting: So that painting – fun fact – was never once on set. That is all post effects. Sometimes it was green screen, and sometimes it was this other painting that was

very nice but very Tumblr art. It was actually Blake's idea to have it be a little bit more, um, obscene. Certainly it's art, but a little more shocking for Stephanie to see. Not so polished, not so pretty, not so coy. I thought that was really brilliant. Regarding Pitch Perfec: Are we ever gonna get the Beca and Chloe love story that they so deserve? I know. I definitely wanted to have an ending that was a Bechloe ending, and we did shoot one version where Brittany and I tricked everybody into just shooting one that was just the two of us getting together. We knew it

Hotspots.LGBT | 39

was a long shot. It meant so much to us that there was this following around their latent relationship and, yeah, I thought it would've been really cool if it would have ended up coming to fruition in the end. If we ever do a four, I will fight tooth and nail for it, but I'm not sure it's gonna happen. Because the studio doesn't want to go there with their sexuality? It wasn't like Universal was like, “There can be no lesbians in Pitch Perfect!” Because obviously Cynthia Rose is an openly gay character. But I think they were just confused by it because they weren't listening to all the online chatter about it, whereas I see it every day, and I'm like, “Are you kidding? This is what they want!”

Best lesbian Bechloe fanfiction you've read? OK, I've actually only tried to ever read one. It was so sweet and puppy-lovey that I was like, “Aww, I wanted to read some sauciness!” I thought I was gonna get scandalized! Instead, I was like, “Aww! This is, like, so sweet! This reminds me of The Baby-Sitters Club books.” But I haven't actually followed up on it. You once met a guy at a Gelson's market who told you he does your Camp character, Fritzi, in drag. First of all, how often do you run into drag queens at grocery stores who tell you that you're their inspiration? (Laughs) Not often enough! That was one of my favorite moments of being recognized, ever. And I'm sorry, what's the second part of your question? I got too excited. Which other characters of yours might make good drag material? Stephanie has a real Sandy-in-Grease vibe,

40

| Hotspots.LGBT

where she doesn't become the bad girl, exactly, but she loosens up and shakes it off a little bit. But I do always still like Rizzo in Grease, who is more fun than Sandy, so I'm not sure that Stephanie is necessarily the one. She'd have to really just be letting her hair down. You've said you downplayed Fritzi's sexuality when you filmed Camp. The thing that made me uncomfortable about Fritzi was I was 16, but it wasn't so much that she was gay – it was that unrequited gay love situation. I think if she'd been crushing it and getting girls, I would've been like, “Awesome, awesome, awesome!” It was just, at 16 you don't want to be playing the girl that nobody likes, which I totally recognize as I get older is such a silly insecurity issue. But at the time I was definitely like, “Can't somebody just have a crush on me in a movie – god!” Would you have approached Fritzi differently in retrospect? The truth is, I think I would have just enjoyed myself. Todd Graff is amazing, and I'm so lucky to have had him as my first film director. And he really got me to do everything that I think that I would've done as a more experienced actor, regardless, but I guess I regret that I didn't enjoy myself more. You recently won the Choice Twit award at this year's Teen Choice Awards, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was your crowning tweet: “Lot of people seem really proud of themselves for announcing they 'already knew' Barry Manilow was gay. Yeah……ur the true heroes today guys.” When a public figure comes out, taking the attitude of like, “Duh, we knew,” is the weirdest thing to me. Even when celebrities announce that they're pregnant, people aren't like, “Duh, we could tell three months ago.” They're like, “Aww, she's finally ready to talk about the fact that she's pregnant! That's amazing!” And you would think that your sexuality would just be really supported (because) they feel comfortable talking about it now. It's a really weird topic to feel a sense of superiority

that you figured it out first. So much of what you do is just a bit gay. Was that the case for your role as Santa Claus's daughter in the forthcoming Noelle? Again, I would say Noelle has a touch of camp, so hopefully that will be enjoyable. It's been so long and I haven't even seen a cut of it, so I'm like, “What did we make?” Oh, but they did make a point to have same-sex couples wherever we went, whether we were at the North Pole or outside the North Pole. Getting back to A Simple Favor: Where do you think Stephanie and Emily fall on the Kinsey Scale? That's a good question. I think Emily is a surprise for Stephanie, and she is completely in love with her in a way that she can't totally

understand. I do think that Stephanie probably would define herself as straight, except that there is this woman and she really is kind of in love with her and there is a part of her that is attracted to her. That scene: I remember Blake and I both feeling like neither of us wanted to be the aggressor in the scene. Blake was worried that

she would come off as taking advantage of me in that scene because I'm in a very vulnerable place, and I was worried that I would come off like I wanted so much more, and that Blake is just kind of playing and Emily is very comfortable with the fluid aspects of her sexuality, whereas Stephanie has more of an emotional component to it. So, I was worried it would be, like, really sad. We definitely struggled to find that perfect balance of, there's just this moment and they both get caught up in it and it's a little uncomfortable. Yeah, it was a fun day. You've been open about your girl crushes over the years. Have you ever had a girl crush that was or could have been romantic? Let me think about that. I definitely – there's somebody I'm still friends with, and when we met we kissed. This was after high school, and it was the first time I had kissed a girl where it wasn't just like, we're at a party and boys are watching! That horrible performance silliness. But I think I haven't had that emotional love for a lady, which isn't saying it could never happen to me, but I think I'm more of an Emily than a Stephanie. And your lip-lock with your longtime girl crush Blake Lively in this movie – thoughts? (Laughs) I mean, all I'm ever thinking about in (kissing) scenes is, who has gum? Who has a mint? And I think Blake is probably the same because I've never experienced a guy, like, searching for a mint and searching for gum. So, we were the mintiest, freshest two people to have ever kissed in the history of America. Congratulations! Thank you. Call Guinness.

Even in prison, Shea Diamond was a star. The concrete floor her stage, the men her audience. And the acoustics? “The best,” Diamond says. The 40-year-old soul songstress stretched her body over the hard ground, beating it while singing a song she wrote in her cell called “I Am Her.” She was serving a 10-year jail sentence at various men's correctional facilities in Michigan for committing armed robbery, a desperate attempt to fund her transition, and “instead of just counting the days and wondering what day it is, I put all the energy into music.” The men were transfixed, moved. “These guys were singing it,” she says, “and asking me to sing it again.” Diamond was released from prison in 2009 with a passel of songs she'd written, moved to New York City, and devoted her new life beyond bars to being on the front lines of transgender

By Chris Azzopardi activism. In early 2016, out bigname producer Justin Tranter, whom she calls her “fairy godmother,” was blown away by an cappella performance she gave at a Trans Lives Matter event. 46

Now, Diamond's empowered jail musings are free at last on her Tranter-produced debut EP, Seen It All, and a forthcoming full-length. Do you think the world is ready for a major trans artist? Definitely not, but the world wasn't ready for Einstein and his theories either. The world wasn't ready for equality and wasn't ready for slaves to be free. So, the world isn't always ready for change, but change is always going to happen. How does it feel to know that you are a part of the change? It feels absolutely amazing to be a part of the change. In this climate, it's especially important to be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem, so music is able to tap into the areas that we weren't able to tap into. We were definitely on the frontlines protesting, marching and community organizing, and at the end of the day, if people are jamming to a tune, then we will be able to effect more change. When did you first become interested in music? I grew up with a lot of music. My aunties all sang, my mother sings. I grew up with someone always singing. What role has music played in helping you overcome your hardships? Music was able to heal me in every moment, including my confinement. That's when it was

“Being trans, they wanted to punish me extra, they wanted to discard me of yard or telephone privileges for just being me.” the roughest for me, because I didn't have any support. So the family and friends that didn't turn their back on me because of my gender identity, they turned their backs on me because I was a criminal in their eyes. I had to really reflect and deal with myself. I was left to myself and there was nobody else. I had to reflect and be able to internalize a lot, and so I

projected a lot of that energy, both negative and positive, into music and created what at the time seemed to be like poems or just words that started with a story. With “I Am Her,” I said, “I want to be able to express all my feelings about the church, the rejection from the church, how nobody wanted to accept me for being her,” and it talks about how, at the end of the day, I was by myself and I was all right by myself. Being trans, they wanted to punish me extra, they wanted to discard me of yard or telephone privileges for just being me. What did your activism entail? It entailed a lot at different times. Because there were different roles I played within activism, like survival sex worker activism – a lot of work around that. Because a lot of people wouldn't care if (trans sex workers) got murdered because nobody would question, and so that was affecting a large part of our community. Our most

“I've been having people offer to sign me and to buy my song “I Am Her” since I was incarcerated.” marginalized part of the community is the part of our community that is deprived of job opportunities, of other resources, and have to engage in survival sex work, because sometimes it's our only option. Survival looks different for different people, and through my journey I've learned that. We were trying to gather clothing for someone who was trapped in another state, so we would have to raise money in order to get a ticket for them to get back to a safe place because they were deprived food and their clothes were taken. So these things were established within a place that was supposed to do it, but it was us doing it. That's what our activism looked like a lot of the times, doing a lot of things that people don't wanna do. Our activism was protesting, was going to rallies, was going to march, was going to Washington, was going to all of these places trying to change policies. Our activism just looked completely different throughout the years. Hotspots.LGBT | 47

Do you consider your music activism? I do. In my music I believe that I touch things that people don't really touch. I talk about what's happening in our climate, and I believe that the great artists that weren't so popular were the artists that were talking about what was happening in their times and speaking against those things. So everything from “I Am Her,” which became an anthem, to “Keisha Complexion,” that is reclaiming beauty for the dark-complected woman or person. It's dealing with sexism, it's dealing with activism, it's dealing with self-care. There's a part of my song that talks about, yes, we're fighting all these things in life, there will always be oppression, but we have to have one day to just do us. Every element of my music is speaking to your spirit. Recently, the people (told me they) wanna dance, so I said, “OK, OK. I'm gonna give you good music but something you'll be able to

dance to too.” So I'm making music now. One song is still in the activism world, but you're still dancing on it. But the latest one I just worked on has nothing to do with activism. It's just about you literally dancing. Are you still working with Justin on those songs? I am working with Justin. I am able to work with other writers and producers as well, so we've got a mixture of some really good stuff. We've been in the kitchen cookin', and the result is gonna be really delicious. How does working with another queer person, like Justin, affect the collaborative process? What's so special about the relationship is, well, I'm working with a friend now. Literally, he's a person I can confide in, a person I can

“...it's especially important to be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem, so music is able to tap into the areas that we weren't able to tap into.”

trust, a person I can call on, a person I do call on a lot, probably to the point that it's driving him crazy. (Laughs) But he answers every call. Navigating this already tough music industry, you know, it's sharks, so to have someone who is legit, to have someone who remotely cares about you, not only you as an artist – the money that you can make or what you can do – but who cares about you as a person and your well-being and how you're gonna endure this. What was going through your mind when Justin first contacted you after hearing “I Am Her”? I completely thought it was a joke. I've been having people offer to sign me and to buy my song “I Am Her” since I was incarcerated.

“...the family and friends that didn't turn their back on me because of my gender identity, they turned their backs on me because I was a criminal in their eyes.” And why did you say no? Because for me there were other songs that were on the shopping block! (Laughs) But some songs really were near and dear to me. “I Am Her” was one of them, and the album ones; I wanted to hold onto those. So getting this email from Justin talking about,

“Yeah, I wanna fly you on out to LA,” I was like, “Yeah, suuuure.” (Laughs) I just thought this is one more person that is gonna take me along for the ride. I definitely didn't take it serious. I told him, “Look, I can't afford to go out to California and to the studio,” and he said, “No, I'm gonna pay for your hotel. I'm gonna pay for your flight, I'm gonna pay for your food.” So, because we're in the age of Google, I go on Google and turns out he's a person. Our first meeting was at a Cyndi Lauper performance. That was the first meeting and I was already impressed. Then he flew me and my friend out to California. We were just like queens there. And then going into the studio for the first time – you know, a real studio – to me it was just like magic. Just being able to record “Seen It All” and just the magic of being in that space and in that moment knowing where I came from and knowing where I was in that moment and what I had accomplished despite all those odds. And that song was just perfect, of how I thought I'd seen it all, and I really hadn't.

The Republic of Honduras, located in the center of Central America, dates back to 14,000 years in which it is estimated that the first settlements of sedentary settlers took place. It highlights in the geological history of Honduras the fact of possessing the only dinosaur fossil report of Central America. Before the conquest by the Spaniards in the 19th century, what is now Honduras was inhabited by peoples of cultures that interacted among them in varying degrees, in time and territory. The Olmec, Toltec and Maya cultures stand out in that period.

On September 15, 1821, the Central America Independence Act was signed with respect to Mexico, proclaimed in 1823. In 1838, Honduras became independent from Central America and the process of definitive integration that gave rise to contemporary Honduras began. The institution responsible for the census of the population of the Republic of Honduras, explained that there are four million 629 thousand 916 women; of which two million 626 thousand 329 are from the urban area and the rest of the rural area. While the male sex is represented by four million 329 thousand 313; of which two million 291 thousand 803 belong to the urban area and the rest to the rural area. Population growth is 1.6 percent, which has increased in recent years. The crude birth rate is 22.1 live births per thousand inhabitants for one year. The catracha nation is the second most populous country in Central America and the Caribbean, since the first place is occupied by the neighboring country of Guatemala with more than 17 million people. The Governing Council of the United Nations Development Program established in 1989 the World Population Day, which aims to focus attention on the urgency and importance of issues related to the population. Earlier in 1968, world leaders proclaimed that individuals have the basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children. In 2017, the world

population was 7.6 billion people. It is estimated that they will reach 8,600 million for the year 2030. In addition, it will reach 9,800 million for 2050 and 11,200 for 2100. These are estimates of a new United Nations report published last year.

The three most important tourist places in Honduras: their respective characteristics and descriptions 1. Copan Ruins Located between one of the most touristic places of Honduras, this is the ancient capital of a Mayan kingdom that arose between the 5th and 6th centuries. Today, its ruins declared World Heritage by UNESCO allow us

to go back in time, allowing us to appreciate what that was its splendor through palaces, pyramids, plazas, stelae and other monuments. The set that can be visited today is quite extensive, covering both the area known as the Main Assembly that houses the ancient acropolis, the "Set of Graves" corresponding to the residence area of the ruling class of Copan and the "Conjunto de los Toads "a little further away from the others. Two museums located in the Archaeological Park, end by complementing the experience of discovering the Mayan world. 2. Dirty Keys The Cayos Cochinos are a group of islands that stand out impressive Caribbean scenarios, made up of two Hotspots.LGBT | 63

genre latino / Conexiones small main islands: Cayo Menor and Cayo Mayor, as well as 13 smaller cays of coral origin. The charm of these islands is made up of their marine scenarios crammed with coral reefs and their endless white sand beaches, many of them practically virgin. 3. Beaches of Utila Undoubtedly one of the most paradisiacal tourist places in Honduras, a Caribbean archipelago surrounded by warm and crystalline waters, where you can immerse yourself in true coral tapestries and an extraordinary marine biodiversity. Three are its main islands: Utila, Guanaja and Roatán, the first known for its idyllic marine scenarios where you can snorkel among hundreds

of species of fish, manatees and dolphins; the second also paradisiaca is famous for its canals that cross the city as streets, while the last one, Roatán, is the largest and most visited, with spectacular beaches of turquoise waters like West End and an inexhaustible offer of entertainment linked to its broad tourism development. The variety is the watchword of the gastronomy of Honduras. It is logical if we take into account that the country's culture has many sources to drink from: the Creole, from the original inhabitants of the region; that of the Spanish colonizers, the African who arrived with the slaves. If we add to this the great variety of quality raw materials provided by the two oceans with which the country borders, as well as

tropical crops, it is not surprising that it is such a wide and interesting gastronomy. The most used products in Honduran cuisine are meats, fish and poultry, wheat and corn tortillas, rice, pulses, vegetables, fruits and dairy products such as cheese. The different cultures of the country each have their own cuisine, and within the Honduran cuisine we find variants such as the Creole, the Misquita, the Garífuna ... The northern, central and southern areas of the country show different specialties. Some of the typical dishes of Honduras, product of the different cuisines of the country, are the machuca green plantain crushed with coconut and other ingredients, the casabe a kind of bread made with yucca, the baleadas wheat tortillas stuffed with different ingredients, typical of the north coast, the soup of mondongo, seafood, chicken, seafood, quesadillas and tamales, beef roasted on skewers and especially, the consommé de garrobo, made with the meat of a reptile similar to the iguana. In the southern part of the country, shrimp and products from artisanal fisheries are typical, as well as all those derived from sugar cane and exquisite fruits such as melons, watermelons or mangoes. Finally, in the desserts section we can taste specialties such as alcitrones or caramelised fruits, alfiñiques or milk and coconut tablets, among many others; and as for drinks, coffee is common throughout the country and is consumed at any time, while some of the most popular alcoholic beverages are güifiti, chicha and Coyol wine.

CARDINAL RAYMOND BURKE

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

W

elp, child sex abuse in the Catholic Church is in the news again and, gosh, wouldn't you know it, the Catholic Church is trying to blame it on the gays. Again. A recent Pennsylvania grand jury report found sex abuse rampant in the church, something everyone who has ever delved into it has also found to be true. According to the report some 300 priests preyed on children for decades while church leaders turned a blind eye to the literal hell on earth they were letting fester. There's a reason why in every Hollywood depiction of prison there's a child abuser, usually a sexual abuser, who gets shanked in the showers. After all, it's easy to hate that guy. I'm not condoning violence, just pointing out that as a society we pretty much agree that child abusers are THE WORST. Unless they wear a black robe and a white collar. Then instead of going to prison, you just get transferred to a new parish with brand-new parishioners to terrorize. There are many reasons why this is such a bad practice, but I would like to point out that by moving the priest away from his victim(s) the church is essentially saying that the victims are the problem. The priest is the innocent here, seduced by the tender flesh of wicked children, as opposed to a very sick person guilty of the worst kind of abuse. And if you feel like you're experiencing

déjà vu, well, you are in the sense that, yes, this has happened before. And it keeps happening. All over the world. But the Catholic Church knows just who to blame. In an Aug. 16 interview with Thomas McKenna, the president of Catholic Action for Faith and Family, Cardinal Raymond Burke says, “It seems clear in light of these recent terrible scandals that indeed there is a homosexual culture, not only among the clergy but even within the hierarchy, which needs to be purified at the root.” Now, it may sound like Burke is shining a spotlight on problems within the church itself, something that really needs to be examined more closely and would be examined more closely if the church stopped trying to cover up its sexual abuse epidemic. But, of course, that's not what Burke is doing here. He's basically saying, “If we just get rid of all the gays who are mucking up each level of the hierarchy everything will be just fine.” But, of course, it won't. Rather than spend a second examining the institution to stop abuse, the church once again seeks to change the subject. Look, all organized religion requires a great deal of suspended disbelief and magical thinking, a.k.a. “faith,” in order to work. Critical thinking is pretty much the antithesis to religious doctrine. Which is why the church is seeking to capitalize on the

However, the anti-life Burke and the culture in which we live, namely the contraceptive culture that others are not making any distinction between “gay” and “pedophile,” a separates the sexual act from the conjugal distinction that is, uh, really important union,” Burke tells McKenna. “The sexual act has no meaning whatsoever except between a because they are not one in the same. HEALTHY HABITS For Autumn 2018

S

ummer is nearly over, but the sun and fun continue in South Florida way into the autumn months and beyond! Yet many athletes and fitness enthusiasts view the changing season, as an ideal time for assessing, reevaluating and in some cases, overhauling their fitness routines. Whether it's eating healthier, building lean muscle and losing fat, improving cardio-vascular health, or all of the above, here are some healthy habits to keep in mind this fall. Maintaining a solid and healthy winning nutritional plan is the first step you need to take if you're really serious about a fitness lifestyle. Studies

indicate that people who eat 5-6 smaller, wellplanned meals throughout the day, say every two to three hours, are going to have more energy,

Hotspots.LGBT | 77

store less fat, and build lean muscle. Each feeding, you should aim for a 3-2-1 ratio of low glycemic index carbohydrates (fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains), lean protein sources (fish, chicken, beef), and mono or polyunsaturated fats (yogurt, low-fat cheese and dairy). Focus upon what you should be eating (all of the above), instead of fretting

over what you shouldn't (bust those fast food, junk food cravings; deep six refined sugar and white flour products). Drink at least eight tall glasses of water each day and curb the caffeine that is bound to mess up your sleep patterns at

night. As far as weight loss goes, you want to lose fat not muscle, so aim for no more than 13 pounds per week by watching your nutrition and increasing your activity level.

Regular aerobic exercise will prolong and improve the quality of your life and help you to feel and look better. The International Sports Sciences Association recommends aerobic exercise three to five times a week for 20 to 60 minutes each session to maximize fitness gains and fat loss. Take advantage of cooler, less humid autumn weather to engage in outdoor activities like walking, hiking, biking, kayaking and fitness classes. Always include regular weight training in your fitness plan. Strength training workouts are key to maximizing fat loss, improving posture and muscle tone and building bone density and flexibility. Make sure to work out each muscle group at least once a week using exercises that are challenging, but safe. Work out 4 to 5 times per week for twenty to forty minutes, tops. When embarking upon a new fitness routine remember little common sense details that'll make a big difference in the end. First, set healthy, realistic goals for yourself (losing a pound a week, signing up for and completing the Smart Ride) and congratulate yourself when you achieve them. Second, limit partying and drinking which deplete your energy and fill you with empty calories. Third, start some healthy activities (going to bed earlier, yoga, guided meditation) that are sure to supplement your diet and exercise program!

PLOT - Desperate to ind happiness with her younger lover, an out of work TV actor, Tony Parker, Angela murders her husband with the aid of a poisoned suppository. Lance, demanding proof of Angela's crime, slips some LSD into her afterdinner coffee. Angela is plunged into a wild acid trip that reveals that not only did she kill the children's father but also their mother, for

she isn't their mother at all but rather their Aunt Barbara. A surprising twist ending has all of the Sussman family's dirty laundry aired out for once and for all.
