resident Barack Obama will go down in history as the first LGBTQ advocate and champion of equality the United States of America has had in the Oval Office. Since taking office, President Obama and his administration have made historic strides to expand opportunities and advance equality and justice for all Americans, including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Americans. From major legislative achievements to historic court victories to important policy changes, the President has fought to promote the equal rights of all Americans. That commitment to leveling the playing field and ensuring equal protection under the law is the bedrock principle this nation was founded on and has guided the President's actions in support of all Americans. And the progress the Administration has made mirrors the changing views of the American people, who recognize that fairness and justice demand equality for all, including LGBT Americans. Preventing Bullying and Hate Crimes against LGBT Americans • Overcoming years of partisan gridlock, the President worked with Congress to pass and sign into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law in October 2009, which extends the coverage of Federal hate crimes law to include attacks based on the victim's actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

• The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) collaborated with five other federal departments to establish a federal task force on bullying. One of the results was the creation of the website StopBullying.gov. The site includes resources and assistance for LGBT youth, including examples of community groups that offer support and options to seek counseling. As part of the firstever White House Conference on Bullying Prevention, the task force also funded a video called “It Gets Better” to address LGBT youth who have been bullied and are at risk of depression and suicide. • The U.S. Department of Education hosted five summits on strategies for protecting students, including LGBT students, from bullying and Supporting LGBT Health • In June 2009, President Obama issued a directive on same-sex domestic partner benefits, opening the door for the State Department to extend the full range of legally available benefits and allowances to samesex domestic partners of members of the Foreign Service sent to serve abroad. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) also expanded federal benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees and allowed 8 | Hotspots.LGBT

The Obama Administration's record on social progress and equality over the past eight years includes: same-sex domestic partners to apply for longterm care insurance. • In March 2010, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law by President Obama and ensures that Americans have secure, stable, and affordable insurance. Insurance companies are no longer able to discriminate against anyone due to a pre-existing condition, and because of the law, insurers can no longer turn someone away just because he or she is lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. • The federal website, HealthCare.gov, designed to help all consumers find the health insurance best suited to their needs, makes it easy to locate health insurers that cover domestic partners. • The Affordable Care Act also makes it easier for people living with HIV and AIDS to obtain Medicaid and private health insurance and overcome barriers to care from qualified providers. • President Obama developed and released the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States to address the disparities faced especially by gay and bisexual men of all races and ethnicities and transgender women of color. • The President has supported legislative efforts to ban the use of so-called “conversion therapy” against minors and released a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) study condemning the practice. This report, which was developed in collaboration with the American Psychological Association and a panel of behavioral health experts, is the first federal in-depth review of conversion therapy. As SAMHSA reported, variations in sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are normal. Conversion therapy is

Repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell • The President signed bipartisan legislation to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell on December 22, 2010, allowing gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans to serve openly in the Armed Forces without fear of being dismissed from service because of who they are and who they love, putting in motion the end of a discriminatory policy that ran counter to American values.

Ending the Legal Defense of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) • In February 2011, the President and Attorney General announced that the Department of Justice would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act's provision defining marriage as only between a man and woman, leading to the Supreme Court's landmark decisions holding the Act unconstitutional.

.............................................................................................................

not effective, reinforces harmful gender stereotypes, and is not an appropriate mental health treatment. • HHS funded the Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) to establish the first national resource center for older LGBT individuals. This center supports communities across the country as they aim to serve the estimated 1.5 to 4 million LGBT individuals who are 60 and older. This center provides information, assistance and resources at the state and community levels. • HHS now requires all hospitals receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds – just about every hospital in America – to allow visitation rights for LGBT patients. The President also directed HHS to ensure that medical decision-making rights of LGBT patients are respected.

• After the United States v. Windsor decision, in which the Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, the President instructed the Cabinet to review over 1,000 federal statutes and regulations to ensure the decision was implemented swiftly and smoothly by the federal government to recognize the rights of same-sex couples. • The Administration has long advocated for a Constitutional guarantee of marriage equality for same-sex couples—a position the Supreme Court vindicated in its historic decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.

• In October 2015, after the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced proposed regulations implementing the Supreme Court's same-sex marriage decision for federal tax purposes to ensure all individuals would be treated equally under the law. • After the Supreme Court issued a decision in Obergerfell v. Hodges, the Social Security Administration (SSA) began to recognize all valid same-sex marriages for purposes of determining entitlement to Social Security benefits or eligibility for Supplemental Security Income. SSA continues to work closely with the LGBT advocacy community to conduct outreach to ensure that same-sex couples are aware of how same-sex marriage affects benefits. Protecting LGBT Americans against Discrimination • In July 2014, the President signed an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against any Hotspots.LGBT | 9

environment free from discrimination (Additionally, the Department of Education published Examples of Policies and Emerging Practices Guide for Supporting Transgender Students); The issuance of guidance from the Department of Justice that concluded that the prohibition against sex discrimination in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 encompasses claims of discrimination on the basis of gender identity, including transgender status; and several agencies, including OPM, the State Department, SSA, and HHS, took various actions to ensure that transgender Americans were treated fairly and without discrimination in the workplace, in official documents, and in the health care Taking Steps to Ensure LGBT Equality in Housing and Crime Prevention • In 2009, HUD commissioned the first-ever national study of discrimination against members of the LGBT community in the renting and sale of housing. The Department also 10 | Hotspots.LGBT

employee or applicant for employment “because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin,” continuing to set an example as a model employer that does right by its employees. • The Administration has taken unprecedented steps to protect and promote the rights of transgender and gender non-conforming Americans. These actions have included: The release of joint guidance from the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice to provide educators with the information they requested to ensure that all students, including transgender students, can attend school in an

launched a website to allow citizens to offer comments on housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Since then, HUD has continuously worked to address LGBT housing discrimination.

• In January 2012 and in 2015, the President issued a final rule and subsequent guidance to ensure that the Department of Housing and Urban Development's core housing programs and services are open to all persons regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. • HUD's “Equal Access Rule” makes it clear that housing that is financed or insured by HUD must be made available without regard to actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. It also prohibits owners and operators of HUD-funded housing, or housing whose financing was insured by HUD, from inquiring about an applicant's sexual orientation or gender identity or denying housing on that basis. In addition, the guidance makes clear that sexual orientation and gender identity should not and cannot be part of any lending decision when it comes to getting an FHA-insured mortgage. • In 2013, HUD teamed up with the True Colors Fund to give LGBT youth a safe space to be their true selves. Over the next two years, the initiative has developed and

Advancing and Protecting the Rights of LGBT Persons around the World • The Obama Administration engaged systematically with governments around the world to advance the rights of LGBT persons. The Administration's leadership included various public statements and resolutions at the United Nations.

• President Obama issued a presidential memorandum that directed all Federal agencies engaged abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons. • The Department of State promoted the Global Equality Fund, a multi-sector publicprivate partnership to advance the human rights of LGBT persons globally. Since the Fund was launched in December 2011, it has allocated over $30 million to civil society organizations in 80 countries worldwide. • USAID, the U.S. government agency primarily responsible for delivering international aid and assistance, launched the LGBTI Global Development Partnership and “Being LGBTI in Asia,” and funded a range of LGBTI human rights programs. In 2014, USAID released its

evaluated strategies to prevent lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth from becoming homeless or intervene as early as possible once they do become homeless. • The Justice Department issued guidance stating that Federal prosecutors should enforce criminal provisions in the Violence Against Women Act in cases involving samesex relationships. • In December 2015, the Department of Justice issued Guidance on Identifying and Preventing Gender Bias in Law Enforcement Response to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.

LGBT Vision for Action, a document that communicates USAID's position on LGBTI issues to internal and external stakeholders. • In February 2014, USAID appointed a USAID Senior LGBT Coordinator to ensure that the promotion and protection of LGBTI rights is fully integrated into all aspects of USAID's vital work overseas. • In February 2015, the U.S. State Department appointed the first-ever Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons to lead and coordinate U.S. diplomatic efforts to advance LGBTI rights around the globe. • The State Department revised its Foreign Affairs Manual to allow same-sex couples to obtain passports under the names recognized by their state through their marriages or civil unions. Recognizing LGBT History and Contributions • On May 28, 2014, the Department of the Interior announced a new National Park Service theme study to identify places and events associated with the civil rights struggle of LGBT Americans and ensure that the agency is telling a complete story of America's heritage and history. The results of the theme study are expected later this year. • On June 9, 2015, the Henry Gerber House in Chicago, IL was designated a National Historic Landmark. Once the residence of noted gay rights activist Henry Gerber, the home was where the nation's first chartered LGBT rights organization, the Society for Human Rights, was formed in 1924. The Henry Gerber House is one of nine LGBT sites that have been designated as a landmark or historic place during the Obama Administration.

In His Own Words

—2010 State of the Union Address

White House Photos

This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. It’s the right thing to do.

President Obama and the LGBT Community By Ian Maloney

U

ntil Barack Obama was elected to his second term as President of the United States, the holders of the highest office in the land had a pretty dismal record of their treatment of our community. While Bill Clinton started off as a friend of the community, he buckled to political pressure and backed away from allowing gays in the military instead foisting “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” down our throats. Before him, George H.W. Bush went on record before he was elected to say that he “didn’t want same sex marriage codified.” We all know the disaster that was Ronald Reagan and his refusal to address the HIV/AIDS crisis until it was much too late. Obama was totally different. While it took him nearly four years as president to finally voice his support for marriage equality, immediately upon announcing his candidacy, he made his intentions clear that he wouldn’t be the same homophobic candidate we had seen before. Let’s let the president’s own words speak for him as we see just how much of an ally he is to our community.

“This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. It’s the right thing to do.” 2010 State of the Union Address “Our troops come from every corner of this country — they’re black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American. They are Christian and Hindu, Jewish and Muslim. And, yes, we know that some of them are gay. Starting this year, no American will be forbidden from serving the country they love because of who they love.” 2011 State of the Union Address “Those of us who’ve been sent here to serve can learn a thing or two from the service of our troops. When you put on that uniform, it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white; Asian, Latino, Native American; conservative, liberal; rich, poor; gay, straight. When you’re marching into battle, you look out for the person next to you, or the mission fails. When you’re in the thick of the fight, you rise or fall as one unit, serving one nation, leaving no one behind. “2012 State of the Union Address “We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our

individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth.” 2013 Inaugural Address, the first time any US President referred to the Stonewall Riots in an Inaugural Address “We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families — gay and straight.” 2013 State of the Union Address “This morning, the Supreme Court recognized that the Constitution guarantees marriage equality. In doing so, they’ve reaffirmed that all Americans are entitled to the equal protection of the law. That all people should be treated equally, regardless of who they are or who they love.” June 26, 2015 when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality “Today, we live in an America where “don’t ask, don’t tell” doesn’t exist anymore. Because no one should have to hide who they love in order to serve the country that they love. We live in an America that protects all

of us with a hate crimes law that bears the name of Matthew Shepard. We live in an America where all of us are treated more equally, because visiting hours in hospitals no longer depend on who you are and insurance companies can no longer turn somebody away simply because of who you love. Thanks to heroes like Edith Windsor and Jim — I always get Jim’s name, Jim knows I love him, but I never know where to put the emphasis — Obergefell —generations of couples who insisted that love is love, we now live in an America where all of our marriages and our families are recognized as equal under the law. And that’s an extraordinary thing.” 2016 LGBT Pride Reception at the White House These are but a few of the mentions that President Barack Obama made of the LGBT community. For the first time, we had a president who actually acknowledged us, who loved us, and who used his political capital to fight for our rights. We are going to miss him. n

Community Tributes

What would you say to

President Obama?

As President Obama’s time in office came to an end, people across the country, including many of those right here at home in South Florida paid tribute to him. The common theme among our community is that we will miss Obama’s optimism and steady hand. q

“President Obama has been a fierce advocate for the LGBT Community. With his term coming to end, many of the rights and privileges that we currently take for granted are at risk. Not to mention what a conservative leaning Supreme Court could do to LGBT rights. Under the Obama administration many LGBT specific policies were put in place. Plus, under Obama’s foreign policy direction, the U.S. has provided much needed leadership through diplomacy to protect the human rights of LGBT persons around the World. The world will be a much more dangerous place for LGBT people without the kind of leadership that the Obama Administration has provided!” —Community Leader and Philanthropist, Lee Rubin

President Obama was the first president to issue reform on same-sex marriage, create the affordable healthcare act forbidding insurance agencies to deny people because of age or condition, reduced the unemployment rate the lowest it’s been in over 11 years, gas prices are at an all-time low…he’s done all of this while also avoiding scandal. In fact, Obama has served longer than any president in decades without a scandal. — Campaign Director Florida Democratic Caucus, Ron Mills

I couldn’t have been more honored to be the Executive Director of Miami Beach Gay Pride while history was being made throughout your presidency. We look forward to welcoming you as a Grand Marshall one day at our Pride Parade. (Hint Hint) — Miami Beach Gay Pride Executive Director, Dave Cook

q

Like many of you, the last days in office for our President Barack Obama are filled with melancholy and apprehension. There has never been a more open a door to the LGBT community than has existed under his administration. From his staffing decisions (including many openly gay White House employees) to his stance on same-sex marriage, there has been no doubt that here was a man who stood for equality and inclusion. It may be some time before we see the likes of someone with such vision. I am as proud as anyone could be for his 8 years in office and will be sad to see him go. Thank you for your wisdom, your kindness and your compassion for our country. We are the better as a country as a result of your Presidency. — MDGLCC President and CEO, Steve Adkins

First Lady Extraordinaire

Michelle Robinson

Obama By Ian Maloney

We’ve got to stand side by side with all our neighbors — straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender; Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu immigrant, Native American — because the march for civil rights isn’t just about African-Americans, it’s about all Americans. It’s about making things more just, more equal, more free for all our kids and grandkids. That’s the story you all have the opportunity to write. That’s what this historic university has prepared you to do.

W

hat could we possibly say about our former First Lady Michelle Obama that has not already been said a million times? Probably not much, but after eight flawless years at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, there is so much that we are going to miss now that her time there has come and gone. From her outstanding fashion sense, to her love of gardening, we hope that she doesn’t fade too far into the background now that the national spotlight no longer shines on her beautiful face. It is impossible to think of Michelle Obama without the words “fashion icon” popping into your mind. For most of the past decade she has appeared on countless magazine covers, attended thousands of events and made many television appearances all while looking fabulous. If she wears a designer, it is a statement that reverberates across the globe. Take for example the openly gay fashion designer Jason Wu. Mrs. Obama wore a Jason Wu on

60 minutes in 2008 before her husband was even president and then again at the Inaugural Ball after President Obama’s first win. Those appearances changed the designer’s life. When asked if Mrs. Obama wearing his designs increased interest in his brand, Wu recently told Vogue Magazine: “It was an incredibly emotional, life-changing moment for me—I knew that my life and career would never be the same again. Global interest for the Jason Wu brand peaked immediately and yielded tremendous recognition and publicity that normally would take years to grow as a brand. “ Wu, however, is hardly the only gay designer Mrs. Obama has put on the map. She has also worn dresses by Thakoon, a Thai-American gay man who is also an immigrant who moved to the US as a youth. Besides Thakoon, she has also helped make Brandon Maxwell a household name, though admittedly Lady Gaga found him first, he’s one of her best friends. Even Hotspots.LGBT | 51

veteran designer Christian Siriano, has hinted that his brand has been helped by the First Lady wearing his dresses. With so many choices for designers, it is certainly not a coincidence that Mrs. Obama has chosen so many designers who are “family.”

LGBT Rights

Choosing gay designers is hardly the only thing that Michelle Obama has done for our community. Like her husband, she has spoken out time and time again in support of LGBT Americans. In 2016 she was invited to speak at a college graduation in Jackson, Mississippi. Despite being in the deep south and speaking at Jackson State University, a historically black university (HBCU,) she took the opportunity to speak on LGBT rights and to help the audience understand that LGBT rights ARE civil rights. She told the graduates: “...we’ve got to stand side by side with all our neighbors — straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender; Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu immigrant, Native American — because the march for civil rights isn’t just about AfricanAmericans, it’s about all Americans. It’s about making things more just, more equal, more free for all our kids and grandkids. That’s the story you all have the opportunity to write. That’s what this historic university has prepared you to do.”

New Generation

White House Photos

We are certainly going to miss the Obamas in the White House but we are hopeful Mrs. Obama will continue her good work that she has started during her role as our nation’s First Lady. Hopefully, thanks to her, a whole new generation of kids will understand how important it is to eat healthy and to get enough exercise. Thanks to her, a new generation of young gay designers will have heroes to look up to, and thanks to her, we have a role model who will set the standard for First Ladies just like Jackie O did over 50 years ago. n

NicholeT. Phillips [exclusive interview] by Scott Holland photos by The Drag Photographer

Since we wrote about Shantell D'Marco, Miss Florida F.I. last week, we thought it only appropriate that this week we tell you all about her sister, Nicole T Phillips, Miss Florida F.I. at Large. I have personally known Nicole for 17 years, and could not have been happier than I was the day she won Miss Florida F.I. at Large. I know how much she wanted it and how hard she worked to achieve it.

uWhat was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience? The first drag show I attended was at the Carousel in Knoxville TN in 1996. The atmosphere was full of energy, and of course I was nervous and excited at the same time. uWhen did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession? After that first show in Knoxville I knew I wanted to try performing drag and I did. I didn't make it my profession until I moved to South Florida in 2000. uWho is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why? My Drag Mother is Regine Phillips. She currently works at The Baton Show Lounge in Chicago. My favorite queen would be Latrice Royale, because she has always kept it real and has been true to herself. uWhat's your favorite number to perform and why? My favorite number would have to be Fantasia's, “The Lord Is Blessing Me.” The song talks about waking up every day as a blessing, which it is. uWhat's the best thing that has happened to you in drag? The best thing, by far, has been winning the title of Miss Florida F.I. at Large 2016! uWhat differentiates you from other queens? What makes you unique? Not trying to toot my own horn…yeah I am… it's my lip synching skills. I think my lip synching is amazing and I've always been a stickler about that. It may seem like a small thing, bit in this field of female impersonation that plays a major part of your show. uWhat does the future hold? I actually have the pageant bug, so once I give up Miss Florida F.I. at Large (which I'm not ready to do yet… lol), I want to venture out into the pageant circuit. uWhat venues around town can we find you working? You can see me performing at Lips Restaurant Thursday-Sunday and at Boardwalk on Monday nights.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO

Hmmm…

AFTER A FEW BEERS, WELL…

One in five straight men watches gay sex, according to a new study reported on in the Feb./March issue of The Advocate. According to the LGBT magazine, a study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, examined the porn-viewing habits of 821 gay, straight and bisexual men from around the country. Among the surprising results: 55 of gay men watch straight porn and 21% of straight men watch gay porn.

IS BIGGER REALLY BETTER?

Photo: youtube.com

A YEAR WITH NO SEX PROVES A POINT

In the United States, the average size of new single family homes grew from 1,780 square feet in 1978 to 2,479 in 2007, and to 2,662 square feet in 2013 – even though the size of the average family is now smaller. A “Tiny House” movement is now promoting the return to houses of less than 1,000 square feet.

A gay man recently abstained from sex for a year just so he could donate blood, hypothetically the first such donation in decades. Since 1983, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned blood donations from men who have sex with men for fear of HIV transmission. That rule was replaced in 2015 with another that still discriminates against gay men by requiring them to go a full year without any sexual contact before being eligible to donate blood. Zack Ford, LGBT editor at ThinkProgress.org, reports Jay Franzone, an openly gay man, was able to donate blood legally last week when he went without sex for a year just to do a good deed – and prove the absurdity of the rule. “I [could not] even receive oral sex over the course of one year but my best friend can sleep with eight different women in a week and go donate blood, no problems — Photo: pinknews.co.uk without any protection.”

LONDON HIV RATES ARE FALLING DOWN

Four London, England sexual health clinics have reported seeing 40% fewer HIV infections in 2016 over the previous year. The finding coincides with gay men’s ability to purchase pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication online. PrEP greatly reduces the chance of contracting HIV. However, researchers were reluctant to credit the lower HIV infection rate to online PrEP.

INTERVIEW 5 Questions by Ian Maloney

STEVE

ADKINS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE MIAMI-DADE GAY AND LESBIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

T

he Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) is the largest not-for-proit corporation in the county for gay and lesbian businesses. The chamber has a membership comprised of close to 600 companies / businesses and represents more than 1,200 members. It was a pleasure to sit down with Steve Adkins who gave us insight into what the MDGLCC is all about.

1

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE CHAMBER?

A: I started as a board member back in 2002.

In 2005, we re-organized the chamber board and performed a top-down assessment of our membership/organization. As part of that process, I began working (unpaid/part-time) in late 2005 to implement some of the strategies we had come up with to build the Chamber and diversify our programming. I became a full-time paid employee in mid-2006.

74 | Hotspots.LGBT

2

Q: WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THE CHAMBER?

A: I am lucky to have had two career chapters

in my life before the chamber. My grandfather was a career banker (at BofA) for over 40 years and got me a part-time job right out of high school (which I kept throughout college). Upon graduating San Diego State University, I joined Bank of America’s commercial lending program and remained in banking until 1998 (23 years). My second career began when I moved to Miami Beach in 1999 and purchased the Jefferson House B&B. I lived on property, cooked and ran the B&B until its sale in early 2005…an amazing and exhausting time in my life. I miss the guests but not the hours.

3

Q: TELL OUR READERS WHAT THE MDGLCC DOES.

A: The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian

Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) is the largest not-for-proit corporation in the

4

Q: WHY DOES THE LGBT COMMUNITY

NEED AN ORGANIZATION LIKE THE MDGLCC? A: The simple answer is visibility and equality. MDGLCC operates as most Chambers around the country do…to engage as a local association to promote and protect the interests of the business community in a particular place. In our case, we promote and advocate on behalf of LGBT owned and allied supportive businesses who want to do business with the LGBT market. Without an LGBT Chamber, there is no one to deine the market and create an opportunity-based platform from which business is created for our members. MDGLCC works with businesses across South Florida to create open and diverse workplaces that do not discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity. As a result of our work and that of our partners, the LGBT business

market continues to expand as an important voice in Miami-Dade and is held in equal consideration in most legislative decisions at the county and municipal levels.

5

Q: JUST THIS PAST WEEK THE

CHAMBER PRESENTED THE STATE OF THE COMMUNITY. CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF STATEMENT THAT SUMMARIZES THE STATE OF OUR COMMUNITY FOR OUR READERS WHO DIDN’T HAVE A CHANCE TO ATTEND THE EVENT? A: The impact of this annual event cannot be understated. The State of Our Community luncheon was created over six years ago to provide a dialogue of political understanding between the elected oficials of our largest local municipalities and the county and, the LGBT business community. Since the election of David Richardson, our voice in Tallahassee is represented along with the platforms of our two local LGBT advocacy organizations, SAVE and Equality Florida. As the business, social and political climate changes from year to year, it is important that the LGBT community has an opportunity to communicate its desires and motivations while we give ear to what our political leaders represent what they feel are critical issues facing us in the coming year. From this communication, an LGBT Advocacy Action Plan is created outlining the goals we would like to achieve and, who we need to work with to see the change materialize. county (2nd largest LGBT Chamber in the US behind Seattle) for gay and lesbian businesses. With membership comprised of close to 600 companies / businesses representing more than 1,200 members, the Chamber’s mission is to promote a uniied and thriving, gay and gay-friendly, business and professional community throughout Miami-Dade County. Our goals are to promote networking (over 70 events each year) within the existing gay and gay-friendly business and professional community, to promote business opportunities for Chamber members, to promote Miami as a year-round, gay and gay-friendly tourist destination, to provide resources for our members, and to provide outreach from our community to other organizations.

HOT EATS

Taco bar, Mexican Restaurant South of the border in South Florida |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

by Andrew LaRochelle

Recently, my new hubby Steven and I had the pleasure of venturing over to Taco Bar (2306 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale) a newer restaurant across the street from Target and the Coral Ridge Mall. When you first enter the intimate restaurant, you see an eat-in bar and clean lines throughout. There is a “creative skull-themed décor with eclectic music” and a bunch of different artwork 80 | Hotspots.LGBT

hanging on the walls. One wall features a bunch of different wine bottles that gives the customer a reminder that they serve an affordable selection of wines. (And beer too.) There is a modern industrial feel to the space. We were immediately greeted by one of the owners named Peter Juvelis. He gave us some background about the concept and about how they came up with their

tagline. "Taste How Real We Are", Peter explains. Their motto was conceived to point out that the restaurant fills a much-needed void when it comes to real authentic Mexican cuisine in South Florida. “This place is a far cry from your stereotypical Mexican/ Tex Mex restaurant. Taco Bar is the place to go for upscale-gourmet (yet well priced) Mexican fare. All this plus a very cool attentive staff keeps the mood warm, inviting and lively”, he explained. I asked Peter what made his restaurant different and he said “First and foremost Taco Bar is a “Taqueria” and the foundation of a well-made taco is the tortilla. Taco Bar's tortillas are made from a masa (dough) of preservative free nixtamalized corn. Simply put, this tortilla, when loaded with any of Taco Bar's large list of genius fillings, will translate into pure deliciousness”. Our mouths started to water so he told the chefs, who were preparing the food right before our very eyes, to start us off with a traditional order of Guacamole & nacho Chips ($7.95) You could tell this dip was made with fresh Haas avocados, and it was served with corn tortilla chips. This was a perfect way to warm up our tummies with warm, salted tortilla chips then perfectly with the creamy avocado, citrus and cilantro flavors. Next, we had Queso Fundido ($9.99), which is a skillet of bubbling hot melted cheese served with choice of warm corn or flour tortillas on

tomatoes, onions, garlic and smoked chipotle peppers is loaded on 3 soft rolled corn tortillas avocado wedges, queso fresco and cilantro. I love the combination of shredded chicken and the onion and tomato flavors cut by the creamy queso fresco. We finished the meal off with the dessert of the day, a light almond cream ($4.95) with mint and chocolate cookie

the side, we continued with the corn tortillas as it was easier to pick up the gooey cheese. There was plenty of cheese to scoop but we made sure we didn't fill up too much because what was next was the main event and truly where the Taco Bar shines…. The Specialty Tacos (Each 3.99 or any combination of 3 for 9.99). The first one we tried was Taco de Mole. It is a hot soft corn tortilla loaded with lean pulled pork in a mole Poblano sauce (which contain about 20 ingredients including chili peppers and chocolate). The chocolate sounds bizarre but works to counteract the heat of the chili peppers and does not dominate, but helps give this yummy sauce its dark color.

The next one we tried was the Taco de Cochinita Pibil. The menu says this is a traditional pork dish from the Yucatán Peninsula and is of Mayan origin. A corn tortilla stuffed with slow roasted pulled pork shoulder that has been marinated in achiote paste, spices, orange & lime and wrapped in banana leaf.

The taco is topped with pickled red onions and habanero pepper, it's the perfect blend of citrus and spice. Lastly, we tried the Taco de Tinga, which is a dish that originated in the city of Puebla, Mexico. Stewed shredded chicken breast cooked in a combination of

garnish. This was the perfect way to settle our full bellies with a nice light creamy dessert that doesn't break the calorie bank. Hip décor, top service and wallet friendly tabs aside, it's the food that will bring you back for more. Taco Bar's focus is tacos. Fresh ingredients are the foundation of the made-from-scratch food that is prepared every day at Taco Bar. Go see Peter today and find out where he states “Our aim is to consistently provide our guests with the real flavors of Mexico using the highest standards of food quality in a clean, inviting and friendly environment. I'm going to give America a happy ending." — The newest Bachelor, Nick Viall, discusses his hopes for love the fourth time around. I'm gonna hold him to that. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I'm disappointed in Jennifer Holliday. For those of you who may be out of the loop, Donald Trump is having a devil of a time booking performers for the inauguration. An inquiry went out to the “Dreamgirls” star. While she was considering it, people on the Internet immediately went on the attack. “They were calling me coon, calling me house ni&&er, calling me Aunt Jemima, calling me all kinds of names and asking me to kill myself.” I personally saw dozens of vile posts specifically from members of the LGBT community. People were saying things like she'll never work in

our community again, that the gays made her career and they will destroy it. One memorable post said, “Remember what we did to Donna Summer”. Ominous indeed. I assume people who would perform at this inauguration fall into two categories: 1) people who support and voted for Trump and b) people who need the money and/or exposure. Holliday went out of her way to say she did not fall into either category. She publicly stated that she voted for Hillary. She said she wanted to sing for America. She wanted to help heal the divide. Her fee would

be donated to LGBT charities. Her inspiration was Marian Anderson, the black opera singer who gave a concert in 1939 at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial to over 75,000 on the National Mall after being denied the opportunity to sing in an auditorium because of her race. Anderson didn't buckle down under hate — she went forward. But despite Holliday's best intentions, she was met with vitriolic hate from all sides and was essentially bullied to not perform. She apologized specifically to the LGBT community for even considering performing "for

Do you know who Nico Tortorella is? He's a kinda hot actor who appears on "Younger" and has come out as sexually fluid - so I guess we now have to add an F to the already cumbersome LGBTQIA. He also has a podcast called "The Love Bomb". A recent guest was someone who knows a thing or two about sexual fluids - gay adult film actor Colby Keller. Colby shared his coming out story with Nico. As a kid, Keller had a box of gay p@rn under his bathroom sink. Let's stop right there - did Colby grow up having his own bathroom?? Or was he stupid enough to hide gay p@rn in the family bathroom? Anyway, one day his parents discovered the box. Colby barricaded himself in his bedroom - shades of "Les Miz". Through the door, his

Our “Ask Billy” question comes from Henry in Florida. "I was binge watching 'Girls' and saw this hot scruffy actor,

Evan Jonigkeit. He did a sex scene, but you couldn't see anything. I think you wrote about him before.”

Yes, I wrote about Jonigkeit several times in 2012 when he was touring the country with Kathleen Turner in Matthew Lombardo's play “High”. At the time, I was quite taken with his range of acting. I wasn't the only one. When I interviewed Turner (who played a nun), all she wanted to do was talk about him. “I think Evan's one of the most exciting young actors around. I equate him with Jude Law, who I worked with on Broadway in 'Indiscretions'. Evan is quite extraordinary. He's got it.” He also appeared nude in the play and was quite hot. And then, as if a gift from the Lord, video of his nude scene appeared in my Inbox. You may not have seen all of him on “Girls”, but you can on my site.

¡No estoy bromeando!

Well, I trust you all had a great New Year's Eve. How are you doing with those resolutions? I actually worked on some new year resolutions of my own like freeing my sweatshop child laborers I was keeping in my basement, stop photobombing strangers' wedding photos and release the cure for making solid fecal matter when using the bathroom after a Taco Bell meal. I know what you are thinking and the answer is yes, I am a hero. How was your weekend by the way? Mine was fantastic! I had to learn belly dancing and how to impersonate a woman to lure some spies into my web of lies and steal their secret plans on destruction in American soil. Also I performed open heart 100 | Hotspots.LGBT

surgery on baby seals and wrestled an 8-feet tall gorilla as an attempt to save two homeless children lost in the jungle. OK, fine! I did not do any of those things! My life is so boring that finding extra toys in a box of Cracker Jack makes my day. All I do is go to work, eat cereal bowls four times a day and pleasure myself to Hanes commercials. I have a full life. I was looking for things that are celebrated on this month just to find something to talk about that

relates to this issue and found some interesting things. Aside from Groundhog Day on February 2nd, Valentine's Day on the 14th and Black History Month, I found out we celebrate Umbrella Day, Love Your Pet Day and Boy Scouts Day. These are real holidays. Feel free to look them up. I'm not kidding! However, I think that when it comes to creating additional holidays for no reason at all, my Hispanic

people take the cake. While most of you celebrated Christmas and New Year's Eve, we had the Three Kings Day, The Candelarias and The Old Lady Belen's Day in addition to those. Leave it up to us to find more reasons to over eat, have a party and drink like a fish! Old lady Belen is what we call Santa Clause's wife and she gifts those who did not receive a present from Santa on Christmas because “he forgot”. The real reason why she was created was to help mom and dad save some cash by buying toys the day after Christmas when they are not as pricy and on sale. Three Kings Day celebrates the three Wise Men who gifted things to baby Jesus, therefore, we also receive presents on this day. And the Candelarias is the day we use to make a fire to burn our used Christmas trees (the real kind of course) and have a party as well around the fire. I'm telling you, whenever you run out of ideas to celebrate anything and need a reason to eat, drink and be merry, give your Latino friends a call. We got you. I'm actually feeling inspired to come up with new made up holidays. We should celebrate the day canned food was invented or have a soup day or humor month or anti-boredom month. Would you like to hear something crazy? All of these already exist! They are actual celebratory days in our calendar! Regardless of what you enjoy celebrating this month, do it safely and in good company. Happy (whatever you are celebrating) month!

NEED WOOD

INTERNATIONAL MALES H ey Woody! After reaching 40, I’ve felt a big drop-off in desire. I’m considering testosterone shots or patches to help. Any advice in this area? And who do you have to see to get them? — Longing for Lovin’

y Dear Longing: After 40, many men see their libido plummet like a meteor marked “special delivery” to Earth. However, the odds that your drooping sex drive is caused by a testosterone deficiency is lower than the odds of Bob Barr staying with his third wife. One percent, to be exact, according to my political spies and medical sources. Still, you should have it checked out, because you might fall into that 1%. Go to any general practice physician and explain your situation. They’ll draw blood and test your testosterone levels. If they’re short, then you’re a good candidate for the shots or the “smoker’s” patches. Hey, Woody! For some reason, I go through these stages when I’m only interested in guys of a particular ethnic background. First it was Asian guys, and I made my way through the entire continent. Then, most recently, African American men are where it’s at! But with all the great sex, I’m still sort of lonely. Is the ethnic obsession the problem, or is that just my personal taste? —Yo quiero taco homos

By Woody Miller

Dear Taco: Nice to know the United Nations has a new “piecekeeping” force right here in the south. Your loneliness isn’t being caused by your sexual desire for men who are different from you. I happen to share your appetite for international appetizers. Black men are sexy, Asians are hot and Latinos, well, who wouldn’t leave home, family and career just to smell their dirty shorts? But you’re confusing appetizers with entrees. One leaves you craving for more, the other fills you up. You sound like you need a little filling up. Stop dating so much and create some emotional magic with one (or two!) of your partners. Your promiscuity may or may not be part of the problem. Personally, I don’t believe that promiscuity and loneliness are tied to the hip. Sleeping around doesn’t “cause” loneliness any more than celibacy “causes” emotional fulfilment. But promiscuity will make you lonelier if you’re sleeping around to avoid intimacy. Tricking because you’re horny and he’s hot is different than medicating yourself with sex because you’re scared to death of being emotionally close to a man. There are different reasons for being promiscuous. Some that serve us, some that don’t. You’ve got to figure it out for yourself. My advice: Don’t have sex for the next couple of months and try to figure out what it is that’s making you lonely. Only by not having sex can you be with yourself long enough without distraction to know yourself better.

uAsk Woody a question at needwood@mac.com. Want more dating tips? Check out Woody’s book,
