week ago Monday we headed to Scandals Saloon for Country Queens, which this week was hosted by Candy in the illusion of Shania Twain, along with special guests Sally West and Agatha Tolio. Mondays are happening at the Saloon. On Tuesday, was the Mack Mixer at Beauty and the Feast inside the beautiful Atlantic hotel, and as usual it was a fun and bust networker. On Wednesday was the Smart Ride Crew Mixer at Storks, and while there I had a delicious Chocolate Chip Cookie. On Thursday was the annual GLBX Tools for Schools benefit at the Pride Center and lots of school supplies for needy children were donated. Afterwards we headed to Village Pub for the 2nd of 2 Orlando benefits which raised money for the Pulse family. Present at the benefit was Neema, the promoter of Pulse and Terry DeCarlo, the executive director of the GLBT Center in Orlando. Friday early evening Poverello hosted a dining fundraiser at Flash Fire Pizza. On Friday night we headed to Twist to hear the sounds of sexy DJ Marko DeMarko and it was clear the boys on the dance floor were having a good time. On Sunday we went to Palace for their infamous Brunchic, which as always was packed. That day, the beautiful T-Lo Ivy was celebrating her birthday. All weekend long was the annual Miami Beach Bruthaz, with many events. Here are some pics from the Pool Party and Fashion Show at The Dorchester Hotel.

This being our annual Foodie's Edition we thought we would ask some chef's around South Florida a couple questions. We wanted to find out what their inspiration was for becoming a chef and what their favorite dish to prepare is. The answers are very different, but certainly interesting:

“My family was my main motivation and inspiration. Adrian Deacon Executive Chef at the B Ocean Resort in Fort Lauderdale.

What inspired you to be a chef? My family was my main motivation and inspiration. Growing up in Jamaica, I learned how to cook from my Mother, Grandma and older Brother who later become a Chef. His passion triggered my creativity to begin my culinary journey!

Chef Adrian Deacon

Angelo Elia Chef and owner at Angelo Elia Bakery & Bar

What's your favorite meal to prepare?

What inspired you to be a chef?

Caribbean Paella with coconut milk, red beans, snapper, lobster, scallops, clams, & chorizo.

My Family. I started cooking at the age of 12 and always wished to have my own restaurant.

Once my dream became a reality, I moved onto opening my very own Italian bakery. I grew up around my family cooking and baking all the time. I am so excited to promote my new bakery where we sell fresh Italian sandwiches, pastries, specialty coffees and homemade gelato.

What's your favorite meal to prepare? I love cooking simple dishes. Pasta is one of my favorite things to eat. When I designed my new bakery concept however, I wanted a place where guests can enjoy a quick bite or relax with a specialty Italian cappuccino. I pride myself on serving only the freshest products with the best quality ingredients which is true at all of my locations. The bakery holds true to that standard and I am so excited to share my dream with all my family and friends!

Angelo Elia

“ I pride myself on serving only the freshest products with the best quality ingredients which is true at all of my locations.”

Howie Chef of Hobo's

What inspired you to be a chef? I was inspired by my grandmother who was a chef. I went to Johnson & Whales where I learned how to cook and then became a teacher at J & W for 5 yrs. I continue to get inspired when I see people smile when they taste my creations.

What's your favorite meal to prepare? Seafood, Paddock Florentine.

Johnny Pak Chef and Owner at Georgie's Alibi/Monkey Business

we ate what we got. Watching other children celebrating holidays made me envious and strive to do the best I could and have everything one day. I loved food so as a kid I ate everything. I remember a cousin visiting my family in NYC. She was older and she said to me she was hungry, so I said I'll make you something to eat. I wasn't even tall enough so I grabbed a small stool and stood on it and I made her food from whatever we had in the refrigerator. When my parents came home they asked if she was hungry and she said no your son made me food. They were freaked out as the stove was gas. Since then I've learned all my dad's recipes and came up with some of my own. I also have taken cooking classes in other countries like Thailand to improve myself and to this day I am still

loving to cook and improve my cooking style and abilities.

What's your favorite meal to prepare? I love cooking everything from simple American comfort food to Asian cuisines and Italian. I just love food but if you ask what's my favorite food to eat which I could eat daily would be dim sum Cantonese cuisine. There's secrets to these Asian tapas and only the dim sum chef will reveal them one day to their protégé who will grow up doing this as his profession in life

Executive Chef at The Chesterfield Palm Beach

What inspired you to be a chef? My Mom was a chef and I would always work with her at home,,and at her different jobs as a kid. She was and still is my inspiration.

What's your favorite meal to prepare? Any kind of fresh seafood as a starter, like seafood salad or ceviche. As a main course I love to make steaks on the grill with chimichurri sauce

“I have found that making great food, seeing smiles on people's faces and being part of the Lip's family is very rewarding.”

Jeremi Berry Chef at Lips

What inspired you to be a chef? While being a chef was not my first choice in life. It has always kept me feeling challenged, which keeps my attention. I have been in some form of kitchen management since I was 22, so once I found myself back in the kitchen at 34 I knew I wanted to take it to the next level. Once the position was going to be open I made the decision to go for it after working hard as the sous chef for two years. I have found that making great food, seeing smiles on people's faces and being part of the Lip's family is very rewarding.

Georgie's Alibi/Monkey Bar Celebrates Two Big Events

By: Scott Holland Georgie's Alibi/Monkey Bar has come so far in the last couple years since the new owners (Johnny, David, and Rick) have taken over, and we have seen many changes: A remodel, a dance floor, new menu, and new promotions, all of which has taken alibi to the next level. Next week they have 2 big events back to back.

The first event is the 11th Annual Bartenders, Boxers and Briefs Underwear Auction benefiting Tuesday's Angels. The event takes place on Monday, July 25th starting at 8 pm. Founded in 1993, Tuesday's Angels Inc. began as a charity to give emergency financial assistance to those with HIV/AIDS. It has evolved into a nonprofit organization that today, countless people in the Fort Lauderdale area look to for assistance. For more information go

to TuesdaysAngels.org. The live auction, which will feature around 20 bartenders, starts at 9 pm and will be hosted by Nikki Adams, Miss Kitty, and Russell of Scandals. They invite everyone to come in and bid on your favorite bartender from various local bars including Corner Pub, Rosies, The Manor, Alibi, Mona's, Boardwalk, Tropics and many more. If you are the high bid you get to remove the underwear you bid on from that bartender right on stage. In addition, they will feature a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction which always includes fabulous stuff. The organizers wanted me to make sure that everyone realizes that this is a community effort and without the help of the entire community this fundraiser could not happen. The second event, which takes place on Tuesday, July 26 from 8-10:30pm is the 7th anniversary at Alibi of Celebrity Impersonator Michael Walters, Dame Edna's Broadway Cabaret. The event will feature the theme: “The Seven Year Bitch.” Seven years is a milestone so I thought I would sit down with Michael for this Hotspots Interview:

Is Dame Edna the first time you did drag?

I had done drag before. I started doing drag theatrically in a production of La Cage Aux Follies and other shows where I played a variety of comic drag characters.

What was that inspiration to impersonate Dame Edna?

In one of those shows I was in, one of the characters was an off the wall cooking show host (Martha Stewart on Crack). Someone tried her as Julia Child and I thought it would be fun to do her as Dame Edna. I went to town on it and the first couple attempts were not my best, but little by little as time went on people started asking me to do Dame Edna at events and parties.

How long have you been impersonating Dame Edna?

I have been impersonating her for 17 years. Seven years ago, when I moved to Fort Lauderdale, I was offered the show at Alibi. I never thought, even in my wildest dreams, that it would last this long, but thankfully we have a strong crowd every Monday. My partner Doug, who I started dating just shortly after I started working at Alibi, is such a big help for me. He is my stage manager and now has his own microphone. I also want to take this opportunity to thank my friend, the late Cashetta as she was the first to do cabaret at the Alibi. Without her there would not be cabaret at Alibi, and I so appreciate her opening the doors for me!

Doug Lucas and Michael Walters

Have you ever met the original Dame Edna?

Many times and Barry Humphries is very aware that I do the character. Actually, I performed for him at his birthday a few years back. He has been such a gentleman and so kind to me. Barry once said to me “If I had a voice like yours, I would have never had to put on a dress.”

How different is Michael and Dame Edna?

I am not the character, as I am a lot nicer. I am nowhere near as bitchy as Edna, but I am an actor and I stay in character when I am in the role.

Dame Edna's Creator Barry Humphries with Michael Walters as Dame Edna What should the audience expect from your 7 year anniversary event?

Usually I sing from a track, but I am very excited that Chris Nicholson is coming in to play live piano. I have many things I want to do for the anniversary, but I have learned when I plan things it gets overwhelming, so I let the shows just flow. But, I promise the show will be fabulous, because I am ready to give Fort Lauderdale a show they won't soon forget. In addition, the anniversary will be on the main stage where I will also celebrate my birthday, so you know I will be in rare form! I so enjoy doing the show, and I want to thank the community and the lifelong friends I have made for supporting my show for 7 years.

Food For Thought

Fresh seafood in the heart of Miami

ignonette is the newest venture for Miami native Daniel Serfer who opened the seafood house after the success of his first Miami restaurant, Blue Collar. Mignonette gets its name from the delicious shallot and vinegar sauce used to dip raw oysters in, and if you decide to eat here, DON'T MISS THE OYSTERS! But more on that later‌ Mignonette opened in 2014 and has been delighting diners ever since. The place is rather small and fills up quickly so reservations are highly recommended, but not necessary. The first time I ate there, there was a mix up with our reservation but they were able to scramble to fit our party in at the raw bar. Serving under Chef Daniel is Chef de Cuisine Bobby Frank, who can be found nightly making sure all of the food comes out of the kitchen to his standards. (Think Gordon Ramsey minus the blond locks and the screaming!) Like many places in South Florida, the exterior of the Samuel Smith’s Organic Cider restaurant is

nothing fancy, it's actually a renovated gas station, but what goes on inside the kitchen is nothing short of amazing. My husband Alan and I were really excited to get the chance to go back and sample some of the best seafood we have

Raw Oysters

tried in Miami, and we eat out a lot! We got things started with a couple of cocktails to warm up our palates. Alan was feeling a bit butch so he ordered off the beer menu, which is chocked full of microbrews, and offers a few selections on tap as well. In order to keep it at least a little gay, he opted for the Samuel Smith Organic Cider ($13) which is an 18.7 oz bottle and was more than enough to last him throughout dinner. (It was really too much, and since I'm the lush in the relationship, I was enlisted to help him finish it. Nothing wasted!) I started off with a fancy mimosa ($15) (it wasn't brunch, but I'm fancy, ok?) which is made with Oudinot champagne and blood orange juice. It was light and tangy but not as sweet as a typical

mimosa thanks to the blood oranges. For appetizers, I got it started with a couple of raw oysters ($3 each). Mignonette prides itself on their selection of fresh oysters so I was given a choice of east coast or west coast. I opted for one of each and was rewarded with a Thach Island (high quality select oysters from Barnstable, Massachusetts. They consistently have full, plump meats, and strong, sturdy shells that shuck well) and a Purple Mountain (a new variety of Pacific Oyster being cultivated off Tekiu Point in the Hood Canal region in Washington State). They are served shucked on a bed of ice with Mignonette sauce, cocktail sauce, and a lemon wedge. \

Clams Casino

Alan and I also shared an order of Clams “casino” ($16), which are anything but ordinary. The little neck clams (two dozen) are steamed and smothered in bacon and piquillo peppers and served in a big bowl over a white wine broth and topped off with a trio of Italian bread sticks. When I asked Alan what he thought he said it was “bacony, garlicy, goodness.” The broth was so good we asked for extra bread to help us sop it all up. (Nothing Wasted!) By this point, I was ready for another cocktail, so to keep the champagne theme going, I decided on the House Aperitif ($16). Besides the bubbly, it's made with banyuls vinegar, candied shallots, and pink peppercorns. The candied shallots really add a sweet tinge to the dry champagne and make the drink extra effervescent. The peppercorns give a pink tint and add a bit of spice, but don't overpower the drink.

Our entrees arrived as soon as our clams casino was cleared away. Alan opted for the Scallops Fresh Hog Snapper ($25) off of the menu. The 3 giant scallops were served seared over a beurre blanc sauce and a side of veggies. He opted for the roasted acorn squash which was topped with a bit of brown sugar and reminded us both of sweet potatoes. The scallops were cooked perfectly and every bite was a delight. I decided on the fresh fish ($27) which was a whole fried hog Scallops snapper. It was also served in their beurre blanc sauce, I opted for the fresh fried potato chips which are house cut and topped off with old bay seasoning. The hog snapper was fished from local waters and according to our waitress, was swimming that very morning. That's fresh, and you could tell. The white flaky consistency is not fishy at all and was outstanding. When we were ordering our dinner, we decided to take the waitress' recommendation and save room for dessert, and boy are we glad we did. Their signature desserts are bread pudding and a brownie served a la mode. However, the night we were there, they had beignets ($7) that were made to order and served with a trio of dipping sauces. One was melted chocolate, another was a strawberry compote, and the third was a caramel sauce that was a bit thin, but was so good that Alan and I were fighting for the last drop! If you are looking for some of the best, freshest seafood in Miami, Mignonette is the place for you. Run don't walk. Bring your friends, and tell them Hotspots sent you. If you do go, make sure to let us know how it went on Facebook.

Healthy Foods that

SATISFY

Every Urge! By: Troy Maillis

ard and bulging—we see them everywhere these days. From Olympic sports stars and professional athletes to local gym bunnies and tatted bartenders, attaining that ripped body has become a way of life—almost necessary in some circles. Regardless of one's motivation, getting in great shape is always a good idea and can only improve one's quality of life—especially in the bedroom. In order to achieve maximum fitness and keep those juices flowing in all the right directions, a healthy diet is a key ingredient to the toughest workout regimen. Although some sacrifices must be made, eating well doesn't have to be completely boring or gaginducing. These six healthy foods will not only help steer you on a healthier path, but also allow you to satisfy your underlying urges along the way! 1) Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and are chock-full of antioxidants, which benefit your heart and arteries. Good circulation and improved cardiovascular condition are thought to be crucial for optimal sexual function.

Romance should never be an issue when strawberries are involved. Dip your strawberries in whipped cream (fat-free obviously) and give your man something extra tasty to put in his mouth. These sweet berries are just the right size and you don't even have to spit out the seed!

2) Dark chocolate beats milk chocolate in every possible way: it contains half the sugar, four times the fiber and much less cholesterol. This dark , delicious delight also contains

phenylethylamine (PEA), which activates the libido, releases energy-boosting dopamine and stimulates a sense of excitement in the body. If you melt down your favorite brand of dark chocolate, you can drizzle that warm, gooey goodness over almost anything. Don't make it too hot, though! Nothing this sinfully delicious should cause any pain—unless you ask nicely. Welcome to the dark side!

3) Cinnamon is known to activate heat in the body, which increases circulation and improves overall cardiovascular health. This popular spice is considered to be one of the best natural aphrodisiacs for both men and women. Cinnamon sticks come in all shapes and sizes, ranging anywhere from five to eight inches, and can spice up many warm liquids. Cinnamon, powdered or hard, can also enhance foods like sausage, game meat or yams. A boring piece of meat is NEVER ok. If baked goods tickle your fancy, add a teaspoon of cinnamon to heighten your senses. Yes, Jesus—bake those cakes.

4) Pineapples, like many fruits, are extremely good for you. These juicy, cylindrically-shaped gifts from heaven are high in vitamin c and manganese, which is an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. Bitter party of one! Did you know that pineapple juice makes everything—and we mean EVERYTHING—sweeter! Try it out to see if it neutralizes any harsh flavors you'd rather live without. Can you stomach that?

5) Almonds are rich in nutrients and minerals that are important for sexual health, including zinc, selenium and vitamin E. Zinc is also known to enhance sexual desire. For those out there looking to put on some mass, almonds

are a fantastic source for protein—and what's more efficient than getting a mouthful of protein from a few nuts? Although slightly higher in calories than whole almonds, almond butter contains all of the same nutritional components. Like the much un-healthier peanut butter, the texture of almond butter is thick and creamy. It's the perfect addition to a long stalk of celery or ripe carrot. Break me off a piece!

6) Avocados are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, m a k i n g t h e m v e r y h e a r t - h e a l t h y. Incorporating avocado into your diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, and a healthy heart keeps blood flowing in all of the right places. Obviously, avocado is one of the main ingredients in guacamole. Did you catch Samantha Jones in the first SATC movie eyeing her gorgeous neighbor while devouring a big bowl of guacamole dip? We'd invite any opportunity to stare at a hunk like Giles Marini while satisfying our hunger with loads of guac! Do you use any other foods to satisfy your urges? Let us know on Facebook! We want to hear from you.

I

“This is the perfect place to go for a first date... ”

t amazes me that the first time I ate at Thai Spice was only 8 years ago since Michael Tatton, owner, opened his beautiful restaurant 20 years ago. He likes to attract locals as well as visitors and amazes them all with his devotion to freshness that is delivered on a daily basis. His chefs marry traditional Thai sauces, herbs and spices into their signature Thai fusion dishes. When you first walk in to Thai Spice in you will see a wall filled with prestigious awards and accolades. Some of the recent awards are the “Five Star Diamond Award” in 2016. They are the first and only Thai restaurant in the world with this award!; TripAdvisor 2015 Winner and has been Zagat Rated in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003,

2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016. After you see all these awards, you are immediately transformed by their atmosphere which features intimate lighting, cozy booths, beautiful artwork and lush tropical aquariums. On top of that they have an incredibly friendly and professional staff. This is the perfect place to go for a first date, or even for a date night for any couple because they high backed booths provide lots of privacy. In the 8 years I have been going to Thai Spice I have had many things but for the sake of brevity, let's keep it to my last visit, that I went to with my Oscar. We got things started with two of my favorites, the CoCo Shrimp ($12) which features extra-large shrimp (and I mean Extra Large) dipped in a Thai tempura batter, rolled in crispy rice noodles and served with a Thai honey

mustard sauce. There were so many shrimp that it would be easy for a solo diner to fill up just on this appetizer, but fear not, we made room for their delicious Thai stuffed chicken wing ($8.95) Although it's only one wing, somehow they are able to stuff it with ground pork loin, glass noodles, mushrooms, and herbs and spices. The wing is then deep fried and served sliced in several pieces that are great for sharing. We also split the Yum Woonsen ($12.95) a salad made with bean thread noodles, mixed with ground hicken, fresh shrimp, roasted peanuts, scallions, onions, and chili paste served over a bed of romaine lettuce and finished with a splash of fresh lime juice. For our entrees, I had the Bang-Bang Beef (24.95), which is crispy, tender Flank steak sliced and wok tossed with tangy tamarind and wok fired veggies served over rice. The tenderness of the tangy steak is making my mouth water just thinking of it. The Bang Bang Beef is so good, that my sister tasted it with me

desserts, but since we were so full from our meals we had to pass. They are open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and offer their full menu for delivery as well.

To find out more information or to check out the entire menu, visit them at ThaiSpiceFla.com. To make a reservation, give them a call at 954771-4535. Oscar decided on the Pad Woonsen ($15.95), a noodle dish served with carb free glass noodles, sautĂŠed egg, mixed oriental veggies tossed with your choice of beef, chicken, or shrimp and soy sauce. Make sure to specify your spiciness level, it can go from mild to Thai spicy, which will set you on fire! Thai Spice also offers fresh, homemade

Delray Beach D

elray Beach offers the diversion of cozy theaters, quaint and high end shops, live enter tainment, sporting events, and a downtown art district that has made the area famous. In 2012 USA Today Travel named Delray Beach America's Most Fun Small Town. But don't let this small town fool you, it's surrounded by urban areas so there is tons of culture as well as a whole lot of good food. Original settlements in the area were populated by African Americans as well as a large number of Japanese immigrants who came to start a farming colony in the early 1900's. Bahamian immigrants also came after the Flagler railroad was expanded and added a stop in the area.

Where to Play Most of the LGBT life in Palm Beach County is located in West Palm Beach as well as in Lake Worth, which are just a few miles north of Delray. For an unusual adventure in South Florida, try a visit to the MorikamiMuseum and Japanese Gardens (4000 Morikami Park Rd., Delray Beach). Since opening in 1977, Morikami has been a center for

Japanese arts and culture in South Florida. With rotating exhibitions, tea ceremonies performed monthly in the Seishin-an tea house, educational outreach programs with local schools and organizations, and Japanese traditional festivals celebrated for the public several times a year, Morikami strives to spread appreciation for the living culture of Japan. The Morikami Collections house more than 7,000 Japanese art objects and artifacts, including a 500-piece collection of tea ceremony items, more than 200 textile pieces and fine art acquisitions. The 16 acres that surround Morikami's two museum buildings include expansive Japanese gardens with strolling paths, resting areas, a world-class bonsai collection and lakes teeming with koi and other wildlife. The wider 200-acre park features nature trails, pine forests and picnic areas.

The Girls Strawberry U-Pick (4466 S. Military Trail, Suite 3 Delray Beach) is a site that has to be seen to be believed. Their hydroponic farm allows guest to come and pick strawberries without having to bend over or tramp through dirt fields. If picking berries isn't your style or it's not strawberry season, it's still worth a visit to try some of their fresh fruits and veggies, or to shop in their country store for other

delicious hard to find items. Delray's downtown area centers around the neighborhoods of Pineapple Grove and SOFA (South of Atlantic). Along Atlantic Avenue you will find tons of restaurants and shops, leading you right up to the beach, which is wide, and features beautiful white sand typical of most Florida beaches.

Old School Square (51 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach) has been turned into a cultural center. It features the Crest Theatre, a venue for the performing arts; the 1925 gymnasium, restored to maintain its appearance, has become a popular venue for local events such as wedding receptions and dances; the Cornell Museum of Art and History, built in the restored elementary school; and a recently constructed outdoor entertainment pavilion, which serves as a venue for musical performances and has also been used for events such as political rallies. They have a great lineup of events all summer long, check them out at OldSchoolSquare.org

The historic home of teacher/Principal Solomon D. Spady (170 NW 5 Ave, Delray Beach) was renovated and has been turned into the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, which houses many black archives. It hosts exhibits and programs designed to recognize the fforts of blacks who were instrumental in shaping Delray Beach and Palm Beach County. In 2007, the museum was expanded by renovating a 1935 cottage into a kid's cultural clubhouse, and the construction of a 50-seat amphitheater named for C. Spencer Pompey, a pioneer black educator.

They take pride in providing locally sourced food, including grass fed lamb from Deland, pork from Avon Park, and beef from Clewiston. For south Florida, it doesn't get much more local than that! Max's Harvest is helmed by Chef Eric Baker, who for the past three years has continued the fine tradition of acclaimed Chefs at Max's Harvest, which has received numerous accolades, including being listed in Zagat Miami 2013 and Best Restaurant in Palm Beach County in 2012 by the New Times Broward/Palm Beach. 50 Ocean (50 S. Ocean Blvd Delray Beach) is another Fin to Fork, Farm to table eatery in Delray smack dab on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Even with wrap around floor to ceiling windows in their second floor dining room, the amazing view plays second fiddle to the food here. Try a hand crafted cocktail during their “Appy Hour” where drinks AND select appetizers are 50%off. Chef Blake Malatesta recently told the Palm Beach Gardens Florida Weekly “Here we really try to show people the best of what we have to offer. It's fin to fork and farm to table. It's all about locale for us. We have a 24-hour dock-to-door program, where we get our fish as fast as it comes out of the water. My purveyors are topnotch. They know

what I want and what I look for. We work very closely with our boat captains to get the best and freshest fish available.” For reservations, visit 50Ocean.com or call 561-278-3364. For a meal that is a bit more low key, try Mellow Mushroom (25 S.E 6th Ave., Delray Beach). Don't worry, you're not having an acid flashback from your bygone hippy days, these guys are just keeping the counter culture alive, one pizza at a time. But pizza is not the only trippy item on the menu, but it is exceptionally delicious here. Wash your pie down with one of their enormous selections of draft and bottled beers. This is where pizza lovers and beer lovers gather. Just don't try to smoke the oregano! No one does brunch quite like the gays so chances are on either Saturday or Sunday you will need a Bloody Mary, a mimosa, and some delicious food to soak all up all the alcohol so stop in to Gary Rack's Farmhouse Kitchen (204 E Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach), located just a couple blocks west of the Intercostal. Executive Chef

Matthew Danaher's meticulously developed menu encapsulates passion for redefining freshfocused food. Seasonal, sustainable, locally sourced ingredients form crave-worthy dishes that exude ingenuity to create the FARMHOUSE Kitchen tradition. They serve brunch all weekend long from 9am-3pm but they are open for lunch and dinner every day as well. GENRE CULTURIZATE Con Teddy Behr & Adora

In her many photographic projects, Catherine Opie has explored the tension between private desire and the public face. With the O Portfolio, shown at LACMAin its entirety for the first time in a Los Angeles museum, she offers an anatomy of sexual practices that are often obscured from public view. The photographs depict sadomasochistic scenarios derived from her participation in San Francisco's bondage community. For a local connection, check out Opie's work on display at the Rubell Family Collection(95NW29ST,Miami) Adora: Teddy, did you see that the photographer Catherine Opie has a new show up that's meant to respond to Robert Mapplethorpe's photos of S &M from the 1980's. Instead of focusing on sex though, Opie 's photos are about INTIMACY.” I think it's really exciting! Teddy Behr: Yes, I saw that; I love the idea of intimacy, and maybe especially as a response to S & M, which is kinky, and sometimes a bit shocking, or at least back in the '80's anyway. Opie's photographs in this case are based on Bondage, but she develops it as a vehicle for intimacy. There's a softness, a sense of connection here… Mapplethorpe's photographs seem more … confrontational while Opie's seems so much more real…kind of like: What's more important: What you do in bed or who you do it with?

Adora: Seems like 'Who you do it with' rules… That's the best part: “the who.” But the 'what' is next on the menu, I guess. Catherine Opie has been photographing unconventional women and men for a long time and I think her work brings a lot of balance to the artistic table: I mean we're practically smothered in photos of pretty and cute young people, which is understandable and fine, but people get older and they get more …definite…or more 'out there', about who they are. Opie has photographed people who aren't afraid to exist outside the beauty norm, andnowshe'spresentingIntimacyasakindof end, a goal that transcends pretty or cute…or even maybenice.

Teddy Behr: Intimacy is scary, like letting someone know who you are, or want to be, or don't want to be… but what makes Catherine Opie's photos beautiful is the way her subjects look; the way we connect to them; there's an intimacy there too, don't you think? Adora: Totally. She must have an incredible ability to establish a kind of intimacy with her subjects, to get them to relax; to communicate to them that she values and respects them. Not as unusual people or even freaks, which is the easy way to dismiss the real depth and power of her portraits. The point is that her subjects are REAL; they haven't been to the gym or the plastic surgeon. I mean, don't get me wrong: the gym and the cosmetic work are great if you want. But if your goal is love, then you'd better be ready to love someone even when it all starts to sag again….cause it will! Teddy Behr: Yeah, it will…for sure….I guess Catherine Opie's 'O Portfolio' on Intimacy, and her portraits in general are really about the person behind the skin, the energy they radiate, their presence. Her portraits really make you feel as though you remeeting the person, and already getting an impression about who they are.

O de Catherine Opie está exhibiéndose en el Edificio LACMA Hammer, Piso 3, hasta el 5 de Septiembre. Para obtener más información, visita Lacma.org. Para saber más sobre su trabajo en Miami, visita rfc.museum

SUMMER LONG CHEF COMPETITION AT MAX'S HARVEST HEATS UP IN DELRAY By: Ian Maloney Max's Harvest (169 Northeast 2nd Ave.) located in Delray Beach's Pineapple Grove neighborhood is in the middle of their Second Annual Chef vs. Chef Competition, and it's a competition unlike any other in South Florida. Sure there are other cooking competitions, but this weekly event pits local chefs against each other in one on one style competition. Each week, the winner advances until only one chef remains. The competition takes place each Wednesday evening at 9:00 p.m. Max's Harvest lends their kitchen as a sponsor of Chef vs Chef. There is a $5 cover charge at the door, but the proceeds are donated to the Milagro Center, a local Delray cultural, art, and academic support center for area children. I spoke with Max's Harvest's General Manager Pete Stampone who told me “this was an idea we had been talking about for years, we didn't know if it would draw a crowd or not, we didn't know if people were going to

have a big interest in it. You know, it took a lot of effort for us to put together, but one day we just kind of pulled the trigger on it, and we thought if we had 40-45 people a week, that would be a success. We had no idea how many people were actually interested in it. We have had no less than 150 people each week, 16 weeks last year and we are now in week 4 of this year.” This year the 16 participating chefs hale from all over South Florida, from Fort Lauderdale to Stuart. Stampone told me “They are chefs that we have relationships with, restaurants that we have relationships with. We tend to go for the higher teared chefs, from well-known restaurants. Last year, it took us a bit to get some chefs signed up because it was a new competition, but this year it was much easier. Participating chefs include: Jarod Higgins from Cut 432, Blake Malatesta, formerly of 50 Ocean (he will be opening his own restaurant in the fall), Adam

Brown from The Cooper, Eric Grutka from Ian's Tropical Grill, John Thomas from Tryst, Bruce Feingold from Dada's, Victor Franco from Oceans 234, Aaron Goldberg from Bogarts, Anthony Fiorini from 13 American Table, Kemar Griffiths from Rusty Hook Tavern, Chuck Gittleman from Kapow! Noodle Bar, Jordan Lerman from Jardin, Kevin Darr from City Cellar, Clayton Carnes from Cholo Soy Cocina, Jesse Steele from CWS, and Victor M e n e s e s f ro m E l Camino. During Chef vs. Chef, each week two chefs complete against each other and are given three secret ingredients, which are used to prepare two to three dishes within an h o u r. Q u a l i fi e d members of the culinary media and foodie community

judge the Chef vs. Chef competitions, awarding weekly prizes and a grand prize to the winner. The high-energy event, complete with music and lively commentary, is really a weekly party with great unique live entertainment. They remove a lot of the tables, set up cocktail tables and satellite bars, and broadcast the competition on TV's around the restaurant so that everyone can see what's going on inside the kitchen as well as at the judges table. It may even get loud and rowdy at times because the chefs bring their own cheering squad with them, so it's quite a good time. The finals for the 2016 competition will take place on September 28. After the winner is chosen, he or she will take on James Strine of Café Boulud, winner of the 2015 Chef vs. Chef competition, in a throw down to name the Grand Champion. That final competition will take place on October 5. All Chef vs. Chef events are open to the public for a $5 donation. Food and drink are available for purchase at happy hour prices during each match. For more information, visit www.maxsharvest.com or call 561-3819970.

Need Wood

By Woody Miller

WOODY THE BI AGENDA

ey Woody, I recently read your response to "Tired," a man who was confused by his friend labeling himself as bisexual when, according to "Tired," his friend was, in fact, gay. I found your response disrespectful to "Tired's" friend and disgustingly biphobic. What right do you or "Tired" think you have to determine his friend's sexual orientation or question his self-label? -- Buh-Bi Hey Woody! Yet another gay or straight "expert" pronounces that bisexual people don't exist. Or at the very least, that bisexual men don't exist. It's very funny to us in the Bi community whenever we hear this pronouncement. In fact, in my bisexual discussion group that has been running for over 12 years, we are always complaining there are too many guys. Why are you monosexuals so freaked out that some people can actually love and lust after people of more than one gender? -- buh-bi 2 Hey Woody! In response to your advice given in "Bye, Bi Myth" I have to say that you are surely entitled to your opinion, and I appreciate that you do at least label your opinion as opinion. But, your article is still very disappointing. Had you clicked a couple more links while researching the NY Times article you would have seen responses from GLADD, HRC, and the National LGBTQ Task Force condemning the article. -- Buh-Bi 3

H

Hey, Woody! The study you quoted involving the penis sensors has been peer reviewed as being faulty. Having taken courses in psychological statistics, I know that creating and running an accurate research study is difficult at best. To deny someone's sexuality whom you have never met is something I find reprehensible. There is a reason that second-hand information is not allowed as legal testimony in a court case. There is enough bias from the straight community without getting it from the gay and lesbian community too. – Buh-Bi 4 Dear Buh-Bi's: My last column gave the unfortunate impression that I was a "bisexual denier" and I apologize. I absolutely believe bisexuality in men exists. Hell, I had a boyfriend who started dating women after he broke up with me! Still, I'm sticking to the essence of what I said in the previous column: Bisexuality is rare in men. Before you start jamming the comment line again, realize that if "rare" is even one half of one percent, that's still millions of people when you consider the world's population. The truth is that a LOT of closeted gay men claim to be bi-sexual because it protects them from society's wrath. Ever heard of a 'bisexual bashing?' There is tremendous pressure for gay men to declare themselves bisexuals. In many ways it's an act of survival. It buys you protection from society and borrows time for your brain to catch up with your body. Now, on the question of whether it's an orientation, I defer to Margaret Cho. She once said "One day I woke up with a woman in my bed. The next day with a man. I thought, Oh my God! I'm so confused! Am I lesbian? Am I straight? And then it hit me—I'm neither. I'm a slut!"

SEXFLIX AND CHILL

Sexflix and Chill pushes all the right buttons Falcon Studios Group, announces the release of Falcon Studios' technologyinfused hookup film, 'Sexflix and Chill.' Getting some instant sex is as easy as sending a quick text with the question 'Sexflix and Chill?', popping in a hot movie and letting the action take over. Director Steve Cruz shows you what happens when eight gorgeous hunks get together to 'Sexflix and Chill.' All the hardcore gay action is now available for download and on DVD today on the Falcon Studios Group store. The all-star cast of 'Sexflix and Chill' is headlined by Falcon A-Team Exclusives Ryan Rose, Sebastian Kross, Jacob Peterson and JJ Knight; and features fan favorites Carter Dane, Scott Demarco, Jack Hunter, and Brenner Bolton. Ryan Rose arranges a hookup with Carter Dane, resulting in an intense session that shows both these taut muscle studs at their finest. Beefy, uncut Jacob Peterson ditches the movie he was watching on his tablet and wakes up his dozing buddy, Scott Demarco, kicking off a multi-position session. Jack Hunter and Brenner Bolton get together for

some oral action. Sebastian Kross' puts Carter Dane's booty to the test, and he passes with flying colors in a explosive finale. Brenner Bolton interrupts JJ Knight's webcam session for a reallife encounter with JJ's giant appendage. With all this action, all you have to do is invite over a buddy or two, put on 'Sexflix and Chill' and hit it hard. "Spontaneous sex is the hottest, whether it's arranged through an app, a quick text, or just walking in on someone!" says director Steve Cruz. "This movie is all about cast having fun with each other and having connected, intense sex, and there's no better way to kick things off than an invitation to 'Sexflix and Chill.'" "With plenty of new twists on spontaneous encounters, 'Sexflix and Chill' pushes all the right buttons," states Falcon Studios Group President Tim Valenti. "The ways in which guys hook up with each other may change, but the end result is timeless: passionate, uninhibited gay action with gorgeous men who can't get enough of each other. Steve Cruz has delivered another Falcon hit with 'Sexflix and Chill.'" 'Sexflix and Chill' is available with a run time of 2:15:30 and a suggested retail price of $34.99.

Lock the door, turn the lights down low and let all of your sexual desires loose ‘Between the Sheets’. “This cast of ‘Between the Sheets’ is really just phenomenal. Every man puts forth an amazing performance that you have to see to believe,” says director Tony Dimarco. “The intensity of the sexual chemistry these guys have is pretty mind-blowing, and I’m thrilled to capture it on film!” “‘Between the Sheets’ has all the makings of a Falcon hit,” states Falcon Studios Group President Tim Valenti. “From the stunning models with their hunky, ripped bodies, to their classic white briefs, to Tony Dimarco’s exciting, steamy directing, ‘Between the Sheets’ has everything you want in a Falcon film.” ‘Between the Sheets' is available with a run time of 1:35:15 and a suggested retail price of $34.99.

Inside & Out

Hollywood

By Billy Masters

//Loretta Devine//

“O K

, Sheryl, don't sing unless you have to." Loretta Devine onstage with co-stars Sheryl Lee Ralph and Jennifer Holliday at the special 35th anniversary reunion of "Dreamgirls". But she said it with love, as old friends often do. While I was frolicking at the Filth2Go Beach House in Provincetown on Independence Day, a gay man was being arrested at the beach in Queens, New York. Apparently Jacob Riis Park is a popular place for gays who can't make it to Ptown or Fire Island. According to reports, Krys Fox was wearing only a towel while taking photos of a friend (allegedly, his bathing suit was drying in the sun). At one point, his towel accidentally dropped. Fox says, "I just didn't wrap my towel around my waist tight enough and it suddenly slipped down and I literally got sent to jail for it. However Sgt. David Somma of the US Park Police says that Fox was "standing there fully nude taking pictures of his friend officers observed him for a minute or two standing there. They walked over to him, asked him to put his towel back around his waist or get dressed, and he refused. They

//Krys Fox// asked him again. They asked if he would walk with officers to another group of gentlemen getting tickets for urinating in public. He refused." The police were going to issue him a ticket, but Fox failed to produce any ID (he lost it at NYC Pride). Somma continues, "He refused to sit down on the beach and put a towel on himself. The most he would have received was a summons for public nudity, but he refused to cooperate, became combative, making a nuisance of himself, drawing attention to himself. So he was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct." But Fox wasn't just arrested - he was physically carried off the beach by a phalanx of no fewer than 11 policemen. Once they got to the edge of the beach, they laid him on the sand, cuffed him, hoisted him up, and put him in the back of the squad car while Fox cried, "Help me!" Although I'm sure laws were broken, did it really require 11 cops? It seems, dare I say, like overkill. Judge for yourself on BillyMasters.com. The night this column went out, the original "Dreamgirls" - Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine and Jennifer Holliday - reunited at the Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles for a special celebration of the musical's 35th anniversary. The evening, which was produced by Chris Isaacson, started with a bang as each lady entered to thunderous applause and immediately launched into the title song - earning the first of many

standing ovations. This special moment was, alas, a highlight that was rarely matched in a night that provided numerous great solo performances but precious few opportunities for the trio to interact. In fact, aside from the opening, they only sang together on "Family", which closed the show. On the positive side, Holliday sang all three of Effie's solos, while Devine sang Lorelle's "Ain't No Party" and "Listen" from the film. Since Deena doesn't really have a song in the musical, Sheryl Lee sang "Gonna Be My Time" which was replaced on Broadway by "One Night Only". Later, Holliday sang the slow version of "One Night Only", which was followed by the disco version sung by Ralph, Devine, and Sharon Brown (who was a replacement Effie on Broadway and on tour). One of the highlights came when Kenny Lattimore explained how seeing the show made him realize that his ambition of being a singer was not a dream. "When I first saw you, I said, 'Oh my, that's a dream'", Kenny sang to Sheryl, which led to a performance of the full scene. It was one of the few times the audience got an idea of the magic this musical delivered 35 years ago. It should go without saying that highlights from this special concert can be found on my website! Someone who wasn't there was Jenifer Lewis, who played Effie during one of the pre-

//Jennifer Holliday//

Broadway workshops of "Dreamgirls". Since the "Black-ish" star is on safari in Africa, she couldn't sing "The New Girl" - a song originally sung by Michelle in the dressing room scene when she's confronted by Effie. Before Jenifer became the African Queen, she recorded the song, and we are thrilled to bring you her rendition also, exclusively on BillyMasters.com. Barry in Las Vegas asks our brief "Ask Billy" question: "Ben Affleck shot a nude scene as Batman? Is that true? Well, not so much a nude scene as an ass scene. In the cut footage, Affleck is seen from the back in the shower. This seems to be the perfect bookend to "Gone Girl", where he was seen from the front in the shower. Take a wild guess where you can find both scenes? When we're bringing you Ben Affleck from both angles, it's time to end yet another column. You know what might be fun? To compare Affleck's a$$ today to its 1995 appearance in "Glory Daze". And I'll give you a hint - it's held up quite well. In fact, I think it may be better today than it was over 20 years ago. And that's just a taste of the in-depth reporting you'll find on www.billymasters.com - the site that leaves no behind unturned. If you have something you'd like me to look into, drop a note to Billy@BillyMasters.com, and I promise to get back to you before the 40th anniversary of "Dreamgirls"! Until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's bible.
