I hope I never tire of looking outside, seeing what God has crafted for that specific moment, and praising Him for it.

With this in mind, in the summer months we at St Christopher’s take time to change our rhythms and appreciate the changing seasons. We live in a beautiful place and there is wisdom in giving thanks to God for all that He has made. Look out for our Rose Queen Service on 28th June, our Pet Service on 12th July, our family Away Day at Savio House on 5th July, our outdoor Communion service on 2nd August and three Songs of Praise services on 19th July and 9th and 30th August.

Whether you are a regular attender or someone who likes to pop in from time to time, you will find a warm welcome awaits you during these more leisurely summer months.

Cover story: The Good News,and the Not So Good News 16th March 2026 was a good day, and a not so good day: the new Makin Rydal 2-25T organ was installed in church, and a lorry hit the village hall damaging the roof and guttering. Let’s focus on the good!

David Garton Makin was founded by John Robert Makin Pilling (1915 - 1996) in 1970. Mr Pilling, as he was known to all except the privileged few who were allowed to call him Mr John, had made his money in the paper mills of Rochdale and had always been a lover of the English pipe organ. He lived in the Lake District but during the week would travel south to Rochdale where his paper mills were based; always impeccably dressed, he was the archetypical English gentleman.

In the late 1960s Mr Pilling realised that English pipe organ builders were in great trouble due to the huge cost of both building and maintaining these complex instruments, and that the way forwards was to produce electronic organs. Through

a variety of transactions he founded Makin Organs in 1970 and ran the company, more or less as a hobby, until he died in January 1996.

John Pilling’s great tradition continues today. Makin’s latest instruments, designed by Professor Ian Tracey (organist at Liverpool Cathedral) and Dr Keith Harrington (managing director of Makin), are named after lakes in the Lake District and include the Rydal as the smallest instrument in the range. Although relatively small, the Rydal has significant range and power, and its technology helps people less familiar with organs to play them successfully: you don’t have to use your feet!

Mary and I are very much enjoying getting to know the instrument and extend our apologies for all the not-quite-right volumes and sounds that are happening during this period of familiarisation. And please do have a go yourselves – just ask and we can make sure it’s turned on and help you understand how it works.

Our new organ sounds splendid, a great improvement on our last organ which was showing definite signs of wearing out! Simon Mercer, well-respected organist who, among many other things, teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music, has kindly agreed to put the new organ through its paces at a concert to be held later in the summer. Vocations and Community Reflections Nine of us gathered from St Oswald’s, Adlington St John’s, St Christopher’s and beyond for our regular Church in the Pub meeting on the last Wednesday in April.

Anne Murphy We settled in at The Cotton Tree where conversation flowed easily, helped along by the Wincle Brewery ales on tap, thoughtfully sampled by some of the group. Others opted for something warmer; one member, having braved the chill wind on foot, was glad of a warming restorative coffee.

Our discussion was shaped by the fact that it had been Vocations Sunday the previous weekend when churches reflected on the idea of vocation: calls to ministry, service, and the many ways these can be lived out.

With this in mind, we asked each other: ‘When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up – and how does that compare to what you do now?’

Responses varied. Some couldn’t easily recall a specific childhood ambition but spoke instead about the richness of having taken varied paths through their working lives. One person shared that they had always longed to work outdoors in the countryside; now retired, they are happily realising that dream. Another had once hoped to pursue acting, but, with limited parental encouragement at the time, followed a different career. Even so, they reflected that their early interest in performance had nurtured a confidence in public speaking, and that in later life they have found opportunities to express that creative side.

We then turned to a second question: ‘What talent or gift do you have that you enjoy using to help others?’

Again, the conversation was thoughtful and wide-ranging. Someone spoke of the joy they have found in preparing and reading prayers, as well as helping to lead midweek worship, recognising this as a meaningful way of sharing their gifts.

Another highlighted a love of cooking, expressed through offering meals and hospitality. A third described a gift for organisation and encouragement, which they use to bring people together and coordinate events within their local community.

This naturally led us into a wider conversation about volunteering. With a nod back to the evening’s beer tasting, we were reminded that the Bollington Festival is fast approaching, so volunteers will be needed for a variety of roles alongside popular events such as Beer & Hymns on Pentecost Sunday.

Jo Hadfield Appointment of officers Cllr Basford was elected to continue as chair with Cllr Chong elected as vice chair.

The clerk was elected as the Responsible Financial Officer.

Items for consideration by ward councillors Cllr Saunders continues to contact Jonathan Coppall at Cheshire East Council (CEC) to discuss further measures the council is going to take to reduce the possibility of further damage to the village hall by trucks catching the roof.

Highways New/Updated/Completed • Blocked drain causing potholes and flooding at Needygate: This work has been completed.

• Two further truck collisions with the village hall roof have been reported to CEC. • The B5470 Macclesfield to Whaley Bridge road is due to reopen fully on 29th May 2026. It was closed on 31st December 2024 after significant embankment collapse.

deprioritised rather than cancelled and is on a list of developments that require more infrastructure. A statement has been prepared by the Task and Finish Group for publication on the various councils’ websites. The council agreed to a resolution proposed by Cllr Boulton to agree a further spend on legal advice for Phase 2, and the subsequent draft report was supported. The full report submitted to government by the Stop Adlington New Town (SANT) campaign group will be released shortly.

Parish clerk The council welcomes Jo Deahl, who has accepted the position of parish clerk.

The council would like to thank Joyce Burton for her dedication and hard work over the 20 years of her tenure as clerk.

Joyce was presented with an engraved vase and some flowers as a token of our appreciation.

Lychgate After three years of negotiation, the lychgate has been repaired and the grants from the War Memorials Trust and St Christopher’s Church have been received.

Again, thank you to Joyce for her hard work to secure a grant to allow this repair to happen.

Jumber Clough No further information is available on the issue of activity taking place in Jumber Clough (above Pott Hall) where previously a stone wall was removed and stone taken away from the site. A Peak Park enforcement officer has visited.

Peak Cluster Pipeline The clerk sent a report registering the council’s opposition to this scheme in April. Cllr Wray attended a Zoom meeting organised by the developers to discuss their proposals and learned that parishes in the path of the pipeline have made their objections along with Derbyshire, Cheshire West and Wirral Councils; CEC has no position yet. Concerns were raised around safety and leakages from the pipeline, along with how the project was being funded. The first stage of the consultation will be completed by the end of 2026. The design and consultation costs are £30,000,000 to date; the budget for completion of the project is set at £5,000,000,000. Correspondence An email has been received from the owners of Fern Cottage. Contractor Ben Moorhouse will make a soakaway to help with the water leak near Fern Cottage caused by damaged pipes/drains under Shrigley Road. Cllr Basford has kindly dug a trench to help ameliorate the problem.

The Cheshire Wildlife Trust will replace the fallen/knocked over trees and the tree guards this month. They will also remove some beech and holly saplings to allow other species to grow and thrive. The hedges have not been cut as they need to gain height before being layered later.

Parking charges These were increased by Cheshire East Council on 1st April 2026.

20 years of being Pott Shrigley Parish Clerk In March, Joyce retired from her role as clerk to Pott Shrigley Parish Council. HotPott took the opportunity to ask her to reflect on her 20 years’ tenure:

Joyce Burton What attracted you to the post of parish clerk originally?

I had been retired from being the head of English in a comprehensive school for almost two years when my husband spotted the advertisement for a parish clerk and suggested I might be able to do the job without too much difficulty. After all, it was only for four hours a week (with the rest being definitely voluntary), so how hard could it be? I had no idea what a parish clerk actually did and had never been to a council meeting before but I gradually learned the role by taking each new task as it came along. Our meetings have always been quite informal compared with those of many other councils, so this has helped make the role approachable and enjoyable.

What is the most difficult problem you have had to tackle?

I can’t recall one particular problem, but one of the more frustrating aspects of the role is the need to follow things up repeatedly. You set out to carry out the council’s instructions, sending the necessary letters and emails, only to find that a week later you’ve not had any response, so you have to chase everything up again. This can continue for months and, on occasion, even years. Cheshire East’s Highways Department has proved to be the most difficult in this respect.

Joyce Burton

What was the most enjoyable part of the job?

It was great to meet and talk to people whom I would not have come across under normal circumstances and to be involved in areas of the wider community that were unfamiliar to me. For 20 years I enjoyed being given the freedom to contribute my own views and suggestions in meetings and to have some input into the decisions made by the council. I’ve been able to use my literacy and numeracy skills while indulging my interest in all things technical, so I’d like to think it has kept the brain active, although my bridge partner, Phil, might disagree.

What have you achieved as clerk?

There have been quite a few achievements which I’m proud to have been responsible for, many of them involving securing money from other sources to try continued →

the next 100 years. The plaque on display records this achievement during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Since then, I’ve obtained funding for many projects like fencing and draining the village green and acquiring a free cabinet for the defibrillator and sourcing a grant to cover the cost of moving it into the former telephone kiosk. (The latter also involved ‘gently’ discouraging a potential buyer by pointing out just how historically important the kiosk is to the village and explaining how very difficult it would be to maintain as it is a listed building.)

to keep the precept (the money the parish council uses to fund its activities) as low as possible. One of my first projects was securing grants to replace the Cheshire railings opposite Norman’s Hall although it didn’t take long for an HGV to re-shape them!

When the council finished paying off the loan from Cheshire East to buy what is now the village green, I applied to have it designated as a Field in Trust, a lot of hard work but worth it. The application was successful, meaning the village green is now legally protected as green space for

I also helped to secure a grant to repair the ancient donkey bridge, when much to our horror Cheshire East wanted to replace it with a modern structure. More recently I have been instrumental in the lengthy process of persuading the War Memorials Trust to pay half of the cost of restoring the lychgate so that it can last another 100 years.

I enjoyed compiling the 2014 council Pott Shrigley Directory and then publishing the information on my newly created Google website. In 2020 the council decided that a more formal website was required, so my task was to create most of the pages and I should like to continue developing this.

I enjoyed my involvement in producing the Pott Shrigley Footpath Map, for which I wrote all the extra material; this especially relates to the walks, which were tested and refined by my best friend and I with valuable input from my dogs! Over 2,000 copies of the map have been sold, which has brought in extra income for the council whilst encouraging more people to visit the village.

What is the most important thing the parish council does?

It must meet all its statutory obligations but also ensure that although it’s a small parish with few residents, it makes its voice felt among its larger surrounding councils. Hopefully, it represents the views of the residents, although the geography of the village makes effective communication difficult. The website is essential and should be the one place where everybody can find out everything they want to know.

What advice do you have for your successor?

I have been the parish clerk for 20 years and at first the role felt quite daunting because it involves a wide variety of tasks, some expected and others not.

For example, I expected to organise the Civic Service invitations and responses, but I didn’t realise I would be expected to prepare the buffet. (I never did find that in the job description) However I extracted my revenge by ensuring that the councillors, mainly men at the time, did all the washing up and floor sweeping.

The best approach is to take things a step at a time and not worry about understanding everything at once. The work generated does not fall nicely into four hours a week, so being flexible is

important and it’s perfectly acceptable to say that there has been insufficient time to get everything done. The councillors are very understanding. Your new clerk is Jo Deahl and I wish her every success.

What will you do with your time now?

I’m closely involved with the Bollington & District Gardening Club as their honorary treasurer and, until recently, their show organiser; as I love gardening that will continue. I also play a great deal of bridge, which takes care of much of my free time, and at last I shall be able to plan holidays without having to consider the dates of the council meetings.

Thank you to the council and the residents they represent for my retirement gift of a lovely engraved vase and beautiful flowers to put in it. It is something I shall treasure.

And thank you to Joyce for her hard work and dedication over many years to the largely hidden task of parish clerk. We wish her a happy retirement!

Remembering Sue Barratt On 4th March 2026 St Christopher’s was privileged to hold Sue’s funeral. Sue had lived in Bollington for several years, was an extremely talented artist and the designer of many famous faces:

Peter Boulton Sue was born on 30th March 1950 in Tansley, Matlock where her grandfather was rector; she had an older sister, Patsie.

The family initially lived at Tansley Rectory with Sue’s grandparents until they moved to their own home in Merseyside.

Here, Sue and Patsie developed their love of horses, helping at the local riding school ensured more time to enjoy them!

They also loved pony trekking holidays in Llandrindod Wells and many happy summers in Abersoch, sailing the Mirror Class dinghy their father built in his garage.

After moving to Bramhall, Sue and Patsie went to Cheadle County Grammar School for Girls where Sue’s artistic talent flourished; attendance at Stockport College developed her designing skills further. Sue worked for CPA Textiles in Manchester before moving to the mill at Pool Bank in Bollington where she created patterns for renowned companies such as Liberty of London.

Sue became a freelance artist. Whilst living in rural Rainow, having gifted her giant Schnauzer, Bill, to her sister, Sue worked tirelessly on commissions given to her by Horrockses, a major home textile producer in Lancashire. Recognising her talent as an illustrator, Horrockses asked her to create designs for a range of licensed characters; these included Victoria Plum (in collaboration with Angela Rippon) Page 16

and Sue’s favourite character, Thomas the Tank Engine. Her depiction of Thomas on a duvet cover was so successful that Britt Allcroft, who held the licensing rights to Thomas, invited Sue personally to create designs for her other licensees, and to visit the film studios to watch episodes of Thomas being recorded. Whilst there she was introduced to Rev. Wilbert Awdrey, the creator of Thomas – an honour indeed.

The next step in Sue’s career came when she was introduced to John, the owner and managing director of Hamilton McBride, another Lancashire based home textile company. Sue enthusiastically embraced the role of freelance design consultant with the company, quickly transforming its packaging and refreshing its product presentation. A year later, Sue made a forward-thinking proposal: expansion into the children’s character bed linen HotPott - June 2026

market. The first license they secured was Rupert Bear, and the Daily Express, the owners of the Rupert character, were so impressed with Sue and John’s vision and

professional and creative approach that both were invited to join the newspaper’s licensing committee. More well-known character licences followed Rupert, but the increasing demands imposed by licensors prompted Sue and John to create characters of their own. Re-enter Bill, the much-loved giant schnauzer. As Sue developed an idea based on Bill, John saw a 3D design concept whilst on a business trip; both combined to produce Snatch the Dog, a distinctive trompe l'œil design which gave the illusion of depth and realism. Amazingly, 1,000 Snatch duvet covers were ordered within a week and within the year every major UK retailer had placed an order. At its most popular, an estimated one in eight UK children’s beds featured a Snatch duvet cover, amazing for a newly created character.

Manufacturers from the UK and 30 other countries were eager to secure licences to produce Snatch-branded products so Sue and John established their own licensing company. continued →

Children’s book publishers were also interested: six Snatch the Dog titles were published and translated into several languages, but a later venture to make an animated film of Snatch remains unfinished, despite taking him to the Cannes Film Festival! One of Sue’s next creations, Paper Bears, also secured several licensing agreements and a separate book deal, with four titles published.

Hamilton McBride became a principal supplier to major UK retailers like Next and Debenhams. The work required frequent travel, visiting suppliers in Spain, licensees in New York and printers in Italy. Sue was unimpressed when an Italian printer insisted she and John use the company’s private Learjet: severe turbulence terrified Sue, John still bears the scars where she gripped him tightly throughout the ordeal! Sue did, however, enjoy a BA upgrade after they exhibited at the Certex Design Exhibition in New York City: a flight home on Concorde!

As manufacturing shifted to the Far East, John sold his interest in Hamilton McBride, which allowed him and Sue to focus on their design and licensing business, building on the strong foundations already established through their original characters and international licensing success. Around this time, Sue and John moved to Stake House End Farm in Bollington, which included a building perfectly suitable for a studio and office; from here they developed an extensive design collection to complement their growing portfolio of character illustrations. The demand for Sue’s designs and illustrations remained undiminished: she developed product ranges for a greeting card and stationary producer in Exeter, a productive and enjoyable partnership lasting three successful years.

schedule, Sue and John enjoyed relaxing at their villa in Marbella and pursuing John’s passion for motor racing, they attended the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix several times.

Eventually Sue eschewed the commissions and commercial deadlines and painted purely for pleasure, focussing on cats and dogs and creating artwork in her own time. She and John enjoyed a gentler pace of life, spending time walking their dog in the surrounding countryside and, for the first time in decades, not worrying about the next deadline or request. Sadly, life changed when Sue was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease; throughout this last difficult period, Sue and John’s love and devotion to one another carried them through the challenges they faced.

Sue was an exceptionally gifted artist and commercially influential textile and character designer whose originality and creativity shaped a remarkable career in British home furnishings and licensing; the breadth of her artistic capability was enormous. Sue has been described as unapologetic, independent, mischievous, fun-loving and romantic, but more than that, she was a wonderful, kind person, always putting others before herself.

May she rest in peace.

Sue’s professional name was Sue Hall, so anyone interested in seeing more of her work should search ‘Sue Hall’.

St Christopher’s: Pilgrim Place St Christopher’s is becoming a Pilgrim Place, a scheme born from the Archbishop of York and the northern dioceses of the Church of England’s Faith in the North initiative.

David Garton A missional project inspired by the legacy of ancient Anglo-Saxon northern saints like Hild, Bede, Cuthbert, and Aidan, Faith in the North builds momentum toward the landmark 1,400th anniversary in 2027 of both the founding of York Minster and the baptism by Paulinus, the first Bishop of York, of King Edwin of Northumbria, the first King of Northumbria to profess the Christian faith.

The primary aims of Faith in the North are: • to foster a movement of prayer and discipleship, with more people praying the Lord’s Prayer and living lives shaped by the vision it presents, and children and young people knowing and engaging with the Lord’s Prayer as a pathway to faith • to encourage people and church families to see themselves as part of the big story of Faith in the North and to be equipped to tell their part of the story.

It’s envisaged that school children will learn about Faith in the North in ways which engage them in the Christian faith

The Church of England is providing resources for churches and schools to help them achieve the aims of Faith in the North, most recently released being those designed to support churches to become Pilgrim Places, locations where visitors can pause, explore, and deepen their spiritual journey. The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, said: ‘Pilgrimage lies at the heart of the Christian faith, reminding us that God journeys with us through every season of life.’ The Faith in the North website explains: ‘As growing numbers of people are seeking out churches, cathedrals, and historic sacred sites for beauty, significance and a sense of belonging, Faith in the North wants to resource and equip churches to help make the most of this opportunity. Pilgrim Places supports churches in welcoming visitors, helping them to discover peace, hope, and meaning – whether or not they arrive with hiking boots or a rucksack.’

an Afternoon with Malcolm Guite (and Christina Johnson) On Wednesday 12th August you are warmly invited to Paul and Lynne Bowden’s home in Taxal, Whaley Bridge from 12.30, after the morning Not Just Sunday worship to meet Christina Johnson who will introduce us to the work of Malcolm Guite. All members of St Christopher’s congregation are welcome.

Lynne Bowden Currently there is a weekly article in the Poet’s Corner of the Church Times by Malcolm Guite. He is an Anglican priest, poet, singer-songwriter and academic who has written five books of poetry as well as several books on Christian faith and theology. His research interests include the intersection of religion and the arts.

At one stage in his ministry Malcolm was an associate chaplain at St Edward King and Martyr in Cambridge, where Christina Johnson, a lay chaplain, worked alongside him.

Mistaken for a Sheep: May’s Prayer Walk It was beginning to look as if Yvonne would be walking and praying alone on the May prayer walk, but fortunately the new threepiece suite expected at the Winstanley household only required one person to be home to receive it, so I was delighted to be able to join her!

Sally Winstanley It was a dry morning with a slight chill in the air, although the high winds of the previous few days had subsided. We started promptly at 10.30am in church, giving thanks and praying for our vicar, church leaders and the congregation, especially those who would prayer walk with us if they could. We decided that as there were only two of us, we would continue to pray as we walked; whatever topics of conversation arose, they were all turned into prayers, especially for our families.

We made our way to Spuley Lane, praying for the homes we passed, and remembering to thank God for answering our prayers for Jumber Barn.

Along Spuley Lane, we stopped to admire the wall adorned with moss, looking like a big green coat keeping it warm in the morning chill!

At the top of the steps for the path to Charles Head, we stopped to chat with our recently retired parish clerk, who was busy tidying up the little parking area for the houses there. We continued along the path, our thanks and prayers inspired by the wonderful views of God’s beautiful creation all around us.

We walked through fields of sheep with their new lambs and prayed for the farmers we know – as well as for those we don’t. As we were watching a group of four or five lambs who seemed to be with one sheep, two of them started to look around, probably for their own mother. When they spied us they came running and bleating towards us, stopping only two or three feet away and looking a bit sheepish when they realised we weren’t who they thought we were! It was such a magical moment, we felt it was a special gift from Jesus to say He was listening to our prayers!

After prayers for our church school, its children, staff and head, we said our goodbyes.

Class One Welcome Spring We have had a lovely time looking around our local area learning all about the signs of spring.

Class One This has linked to our science lessons learning all about spring and summer.

The children were great at spotting lots of flowers, buds and leaves in the churchyard and in our beautiful surroundings. We also made our own weather station including a thermometer, windsock and homemade rain gauges. Given all the spring showers we have had of late they have been most successful! We then linked all our observations to some amazing Tree of Life inspired artwork using folded paper.

Missionary Matters Johnny and Ann McClean in Bangkok continue to prepare for their move to Udon Thani in northeast Thailand. Ann is teaching at the International Community School (ICS) in Bangkok until early June and asks for prayer for energy and joy in finishing the school year: the heat index is often around 40° with high humidity!

Kath Matheson Ann must have been particularly hot doing the catering for her final Friday Night Fun (FNF) event; the team serve 250 students and staff and, over the years, FNF has been a great way to build relationships both with the staff who help to serve and the students as they hang out and eat. Ann needs prayer for helpful farewells and thank-yous to those who have served alongside her and encouraged and supported her in practical ways over the three years she has served at ICS, and for a good handover to her replacement coming in from Canada. Ann has also spoken to her Life Group girls and Middle School pupils at school chapel services; please pray that these young people take the Gospel message to heart and grow in their faith.

Thai facilitators worked alongside him to gain more experience; the team are thankful to God for the way the training went but ask for prayer for the Lord to show them who should train further to be facilitators.

Johnny and Ann held a yard sale for the furniture and belongings they don’t want to take with them to Udon Thani. Please pray that their move to Udon Thani goes smoothly.

Megumi and Helen Fazakerley continue to contribute to the ministry of their church in Malawi. Recently Helen found herself unexpectedly leading her home group. A power outage meant the meeting was held by torchlight, and because nearly half of those in the room were children younger than secondary school age, she improvised to include them in the study of Psalm 150.

Helen hadn’t planned or prepared, so was very thankful that God somehow helped to make it flow well.

Megumi was encouraged to hear evidence that people had listened to and remembered the message of the sermon he preached recently, despite him being unable to project the slides he’d prepared to illustrate his words. Where technology failed, God succeeded! However, he asks for prayer for the technology to work next time he preaches.

Helen and Megumi and their friends celebrated Megumi’s last birthday in Malawi recently. They continue their preparations to leave Malawi: a few more small household items have been sold at a car boot sale, but the large pieces are proving more difficult to get rid of. The good news is that there are no queues for petrol currently – a very exciting thing in Blantyre! Please continue to pray for the Fazakerleys as they both continue their ministry and prepare to leave Malawi.

Recipe of the Month: Cheats’ Celebration Cake We are now into berry season, so Jean’s recipe is particularly apt! Good to have something quick and easy too.

Jean Ferguson Ingredients 1 packet of vanilla sponge mix 300ml whipping cream Raspberries, strawberries or pineapple chunks Grated chocolate For Meringue 3 egg whites 170g (6oz) castor sugar Method Line and grease two 22cm (9ins) cake tins.

Make up the packet sponge mix as directed and divide between the two tins.

Whisk egg whites until stiff.

Add sugar slowly and whisk until peaks form.

Divide the meringue between the two tins, spreading gently on top of the sponge mix.

Rough into peaks.

Bake in oven 160°C fan for 20 minutes until meringue is cracked and golden.

Slide out of the tins and allow to cool, meringue uppermost. When cool, choose the best looking, turn the other upside down onto a serving plate: the meringue will form the bottom of the cake.

Whip the cream and add roughly grated chocolate and fruit of your choice, smooth over the top of the cake already on the plate.

Put the other half of the cake on top and serve.
