Polo is a sport that dates back more than 2,000 years. Originally played by Persian nobility, the sport spread throughout the region and eventually made its way to India, where it became a popular pastime among the ruling classes.

On Saturday, 28 January, the 2023 Thai Polo Open was held at the beautiful 2,000 rai Thai Polo and Equestrian Club in Pattaya. The tournament was hosted by Harald Link’s club and saw four teams competing in games four chukkas long, played under the Argentine Association of Polo (AAP) rules. Those joining were treated to a wide range of international and local food and drink vendors, a lifestyle market, dog park, kite workshops, and luxury VIP tents. As visitors made their way through the festival grounds, the air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of Thai street food.

And, when the sun went down, the festival’s stages came to life with top Thai artists taking the stage to entertain the crowds. From PiXXiE’s upbeat pop anthems to Violette Wautier’s soulful ballads, there was something for every taste. Jack Bain Returns To 137 Pillars Bangkok

137 Pillars Suites & Residences

Bangkok is relaunching its Jack Bain's Bar in March 2023. The bar has the ambiance of a British colonial gentleman's club, located on the hidden corner of the 28th floor. It is designed with a leather and teak interior and offers an astonishing view of the cityscape.

Head Bartender Thavon Wongyai has created an exciting signature cocktail list inspired by colonial-era classics, such as the Old Fashioned and Whisky Sour. The drinks also include Thaiinspired cocktails made with premium locally produced and imported spirits. One of the signature cocktails is Jack Bain's Favourite, a whisky-based drink made with Glenmorangie whisky, Martini Vermouth, kaffir leaf, and orange jelly infused with whisky.

The bar also offers light bar meals that combine British club-style dishes with Thai classics. The history of the Borneo Trading Company has inspired the bar's cocktail list. One of the drinks is called Borneo, a blend of Regency Thai Whisky and Martini Vermouth, infused with the forestry aroma of smoked cinnamon and Borneo camphor.

Jack Bain was a Scotsman who managed the Borneo Company, which had logging concessions in northern Thailand during the colonial era. He sold the property to the current owners of 137 Pillars House, and they sensitively renovated the old teak property. The homestead is now the centerpiece of 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai.

The concept of Jack Bain's Bar has been brought to 137 Pillars Bangkok from 137 Pillars House, offering guests the style that characterized gentlemen's clubs and helped to define the colonial era throughout the British Empire. The bar offers a unique experience that blends the best of British and Thai cultures.

Little Spain, Hua Hin –Certified Authentic Spanish

Embassy of Spain’s Economic and Commercial Counsellor, Luis Lopez, visited Hua Hin recently to present a Certificate of Authenticity. A collection of their most dedicated diners looked on while Little Spain Hua Hin’s owners, Vanessa Humbert, and Roberto Spina, received this recognition.

The “Restaurants of Spain” international certification program is an initiative of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Spain and Spain Trade and Investment. These two government departments want to guarantee the authenticity of Spanish cuisine in restaurants recognized by the program, no matter where they are in the world.

A detailed application and audit program is involved. Those who meet the criteria receive the

“Restaurants of Spain” recognition and are listed on the Food Wines Of Spain official website. This certification program was initially trialed in 2020 for Spanish restaurants in the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, and China. In 2021, the program extended to Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland, the United States, Mexico, and Japan.

Thailand was included in the 2022 “Restaurants of Spain” rollout. Ten Spanish restaurants in Thailand have successfully met the criteria, with seven in Bangkok, one each in Pattaya and Phuket, and Little Spain in Hua Hin.

L et’s Meet , Robert Collins

HOT Magazine 26

What is your full name and age?

Robert Collins, I’m almost 50.

What is your current Job Position?

CEO, Savills (Thailand) Limited I head the Savills business locally in Thailand, with a current headcount in Bangkok of 450 full-time employees. Established in 1855, Savills plc is one of the leading real estate advisors in the world. Our range of expertise covers all the key segments of residential, office, industrial, retail, leisure, healthcare, rural and hotel property, and mixed-use development schemes.

What do you like most about your profession?

Real estate services are a scalable profession. A successful real estate broker, for instance, can commence their career by earning modest baseline rewards and yet have every chance of achieving a disproportionately large income through ever larger transactions.

How long have you lived in Bangkok, and where did you live prior?

This year I celebrate 30 years of fulltime living and working in Bangkok. I was with Jones Lang LaSalle for the initial 12 years and moved to Savills in 2005. As far as I’m aware, I am now the longest-serving expatriate within the real estate community in Bangkok. Prior to relocating to Thailand in 1993, I lived in Hong Kong and had been with CBRE.

What do you like most about Bangkok?

Bangkok is very much home. There’s no one thing I like most, but the friendly people, dynamic business community, ability to still use cash, and eclectic nightlife all add to the experience, which makes Bangkok the best place to work and live in the region.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Zanotti on Saladaeng, without a doubt. Not only is it a short walk from my office, but it is also an excellent Italian restaurant with great food and even better wine, suitable for business or pleasure.

What is your favorite “Special Occasion” restaurant?

Another Italian, Amici at Siam Paragon. I particularly like the outside terrace, and the VIP car parking at Siam Paragon makes getting there so easy. The food is great, and there is always something else to do at Siam Paragon. Mama Dolores on Soi Yenakat is a close second. One of the best downtown restaurants for a large group looking for a tropical garden environment and great food. Pet friendly too.

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I gave up being the slowest triathlete (on one occasion I literally exited the sea segment in an event at the back of the crowd, immediately followed by a man with one leg), I took up a relatively new sport called rucking. My most recent event was a grueling 10 mile (16-kilometer) endurance race where participants complete the course in boots while carrying a 35lb pack. The training required consumes most of my free time.

Where do you recommend first time visitors to Bangkok go?

It really depends on who the visitors are; however, most people have some preconceived ideas of what they want to do. I’m always happy to point them in the right direction.

On a night out with friends, where do you like to go?

No particular venues; I prefer to meet friends and debate the issues of the day, although a good Irish pub helps, followed by somewhere a bit louder. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you?

In my youth in London in the 1980s I was a keen graffiti artist. Last year, a hardback coffee-table book featuring some of my works was published in the United Kingdom.

The great debate of cork versus screw cap – it’s a topic that has divided winemakers as well as wine drinkers for years. First, let’s talk about cork. Cork has been used to seal wine bottles for centuries and is seen as the more traditional option. Some people argue that cork allows wine to breathe, which can help

to enhance the flavor and aroma of the wine. Plus, there’s just something satisfying about the sound of a cork popping out of a bottle – it’s like a mini celebration in and of itself (Although as a sommelier you are supposed to make the less noise possible during the opening)

And let’s not forget that there are some additional benefits to cork beyond just tradition and breathing. Cork is a sustainable material that is biodegradable carbon-negative and renewable, making it an eco-friendlier

option. Plus, the cork industry supports thousands of jobs worldwide.

But cork also has its downsides. For one, it can be a pain in the bottleneck to remove. Who hasn’t struggled with a stubborn cork at some point? This can happen if the bottle was stored vertically for too long and the cork dries up. And let’s not forget the disappointment of opening a bottle of wine only to find that the cork has gone bad and ruined the wine.

Now, let’s move on to screw caps.

30 HOT Magazine

Screw caps have gained popularity in recent years as a more convenient option for sealing wine bottles. They’re easy to open and reseal, which is great for those who only want a glass or two of wine at a time. Plus, they eliminate the risk of cork taint, which can ruin a bottle of wine.

Screw caps are also eco-friendly in a way as they are fully recyclable. They also eliminate the need for corkscrews, which can be a bonus for those who are prone to losing them (you know who you are).

However, some argue that screw caps don’t allow wine to breathe as well as cork does, which can result in a flatter tasting wine. And let’s be real, there’s just something less romantic about opening a bottle of wine with the twist of a cap.

So, what’s the verdict? Well, both cork and screw cap have their pros and cons, and ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Some people love the traditional feel of a cork, while others appreciate the convenience of a screw cap.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is the wine inside the bottle. Whether it’s sealed with cork or a screw cap, it’s the quality of the wine that really matters. So, whether you’re a cork purist or a screw cap fan, let’s raise a glass to the thing that brings us all together – a good bottle of wine.

L et’s Eat , Little Spain

Secreted in a residential zone away from Hua Hin’s restaurant strips does not deter diners from seeking out the regional cuisine of Little Spain. Opened during the pandemic, Little Spain is the brainchild of Vanessa Humbert and her partner Roberto Spina. Such is the authenticity of the food, the Embassy of Spain has just bestowed on them “Restaurants from Spain” certification.

Little Spain is the realization of a dream Vanessa has long held – her own restaurant showcasing the food of her beloved home country, Spain. A native of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea and belonging to Spain, Vanessa comes from a long line of restaurant operators. She calls herself a cook, not a chef, as she has no formal training and uses recipes from her mother and other family members as her inspiration.

HOT magazine’s Let’s Eat team recently visited Little Spain to see what all the buzz was about. Little Spain is situated in a residential single-story home that has been converted into a restaurant. The red carpet is rolled out to welcome diners down the long entrance driveway. Though many guests head straight to the dining area at the rear, we’d recommend stopping in the inviting, alfresco lounge bar at the front of the property. Perhaps some

sangria or a La Pomada cocktail made with Menorca’s locally distilled gin, Xoriguer. A relaxed setting and ideal for easing into the Little Spain experience.

Move through the house to the dining room, an open-air covered terrace overlooking the swimming pool, with a raised Sala and manicured lawns. Subtle lighting adds a warm, romantic feel. Attentive staff or hosts Vanessa

and Roberto quickly settle you at your table. With seating for a maximum of 40 people, reservations are recommended. Or take a leaf out of the Spanish dining tradition and book for later in the evening.

Little Spain’s menu provides a thoughtful selection of tapas, pintxos, plus imported Spanish cold meats and cheese to kick off your meal. Our food journey started in the north-western

Spanish province of Galicia with Pimientos de Padrón. Small, bright green peppers from the municipality of Padrón are fried and sprinkled with salt. These peppers are picked earlier in the ripening process, have a herby aroma and are not hot owing to the absence of capsaicin. A perfect example of the origins of tapas – tasty bite-size morsels to have with drinks.

We quickly went to the Basque country. This region’s style of tapas is called pintxos - toasted bread topped with whatever the establishment chooses and often held in place by a toothpick. Our Pintxos Jabugo featured crusty bread with a house-made tomato spread topped with wafer-thin slices of Iberico ham. And to round out our tapas exploration, Gambas al Ajillo. Fresh local prawns cooked in Spanish extra virgin olive oil with garlic and hints of chilli. Delicious prawn and that oil they sat in - yum and ideally mopped up with the fresh crunchy bread provided.

From the specials blackboard, we tried Pulpo a la Gallega, an octopus dish typical of Galicia in Spain’s northwest. Little Spain’s version is an octopus tendril, cooked respectfully to a nice al dente consistency and served with a deliciously creamy potato mousse. Keeping with the seafood theme, from the menu’s main course section was Mussels Marinera. Mussels imported from Spain cooked to Vanessa’s father’s recipe. Soft and succulent mussels with that tomato, onion, chilli and secret ingredient sauce that just had to be slurped up, with crusty bread in hand.

HOT Magazine 44

Two Carnes (meat) dishes rounded out our discovery tour of Little Spain’s main courses – both from their ‘Specials’ blackboard menu. First, Rabo de Toro a la Cordobesa. Although eaten throughout the country, especially during the cold months, this slowcooked oxtail stew originates in Andalusia, traditionally. This is comfort food on a plate, the type a Spanish grandma would make, and family members would make special trips home just so they could have it again.

Our other main was Carrillera de Cerdo Iberico or Iberican Pork Cheeks. The distinctive Black Iberian Pigs are native to Portugal and central and southern Spain. Their diet of acorns and elements of the natural forests gives the pork meat a nutty flavour. Little Spain’s version has the pork cheeks simmered for four hours and served with potato mash. The rich meat falls apart with a great depth of flavour, scrumptious even!

Another popular dish is the Seafood Paella which serves two. Order it if you must, or come again for their paella nights every Tuesday evening. And for a special treat, try one of Menorca’s most famous dishes – Caldereta de Langosta – the island’s highly revered Lobster Stew. Vanessa’s family recipe ensures authenticity.

Little Spain’s dessert selection varies, so consult the sweets-specific blackboard menu. Regular favourites include Cream Catalana, Churros con Choc, and Arroz con Leche - a Spanish rice pudding. We sampled and enjoyed each immensely, with the Cream Catalana as the standout for our palates.

Little Spain opens for dinner Tuesday through Sunday and closes Monday. Happy Hour is available between 5:30 to 7:30 pm nightly with a buy one get one offer. Their Tuesday paella night happens from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, and for a set price includes paella for two plus two tapas from their selection, along with a litre of Sangria. For 18 consecutive years, Dr. Harald Link, the president of both B.Grimm, and the Thailand Equestrian Federation (TEF), along with TEF vice president Nunthinee Tanner, have hosted the B.Grimm Thai Polo Open. The final of the 2023 edition took place on January 28 at the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club in Pattaya.

For those in attendance there were genuine thrills and excitement as the Top teams from Thailand, China, and Hong Kong competed to secure a place in the final round after point collection began in mid-January.

The final match between “Hanuman” from China and “Thai Polo” was a nail-biting affair, with Hanuman ultimately emerging as the champions with a score of 8 to 7. The winners received the Royal Trophy from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The subsidiary title went to 22B&R after they defeated B. Grimm Polo 6-4.5. Caroline Link of Thai Polo was named the Most Valuable Player, while the Fair Play Award was presented to Mingming Tomongkol of Hanuman. The Best Playing Pony award went to Calandria, ridden by Darío Musso. The Best Polo Argentino Bred was awarded by the Argentine Polo Pony Breeders Association to Irenita Cautivo, ridden by Agustín García Grossi.

The “Thai Polo Open 2023” is Thailand’s most prestigious polo tournament, attracting international competitors who vie for the Royal Trophy. In addition to the exhilarating equestrian polo competition, this event is a fundraising gala that benefits the Chitralada Institute of Technology. The event was a vibrant affair, with honored guests and Thailand’s philanthropist celebrities enthusiastically participating in the activities and cheering on the competition.

Before the final match, spectators and celebrities took part in a centuries-old polo tradition called stomping divots. They worked together to cover the soil and grass, making the field smoother and harder. This was an opportunity for visitors to showcase their headwear and engage in joyful conversations.

The event also featured awards to recognize the attendees, which was a highlight for the ladies. Ms. Gloria Jones won the Best Hat Award with her stunning headwear, while Ms. Veerayanan Aphithanapat received the Best Dress Award for her elegant attire. The event left a lasting impression, with sportsmen and honorable individuals warmly joining together to support a worthy cause with smiles and cheers all around.

2023 Thailand Open Presented By

The 2023 Thailand Open presented by E@ was held at the True Arena Hua Hin Sports Club from 30 January to 5th February. The tennis tournament saw some of the world’s top players, including Canada’s Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, battle it out for the WTA 250 level tournament title.

But, in the final match on 5 February it was China’s Zhu Lin who was crowned the 2023 Thailand Open

presented by E@ champion with her victory over Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-4 6-4.

Zhu Lin secured her first WTA 250 title, propelling her into the top 50 rankings for the first time in her career. It’s a dream come true for the rising star, who arrived in Hua Hin with a wave of momentum after a strong performance at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round.

Zhu’s journey to the top was no easy feat, as she battled her way through

a tough field to clinch the title. She started by knocking out third seed and compatriot Wang Xiyu in a thrilling match that ended 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. With that win under her belt, she went on to defeat Korea’s Su-Jeong Jang and Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek, setting up a semifinal clash against friend and doubles partner Wang Xinyu. Despite the emotional challenge, Zhu put friendship aside and secured victory in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

The final was a true test of Zhu’s

66 HOT Magazine

mental and physical strength, as she faced a formidable opponent in Tsurenko. Serving for the first set at 5-3, Zhu was broken, but she didn’t let the setback get the best of her. She held her nerve to take the set 6-4 on her second opportunity, showcasing her tenacity and unwavering focus.

An early break in the second set provided some breathing space for Zhu, but she was unable to convert her first opportunity to serve out the match at 6-4, 5-3. However, she didn’t let the

pressure get to her and once again showed her mental fortitude, breaking Tsurenko’s serve to claim victory and the title, 6-4, 6-4.

On winning her first title Zhu said: “I’m super happy to win my first title here in Hua Hin. The trophy is just so beautiful, the first one is always difficult and Lesia, she’s a fighter, she never gives up so I needed to give my 100% and I need to be more patient especially towards the end. I feel a little bit nervous but I know it’s normal so

I have to handle that, I have to attack when I have a chance because she’s not gonna give this match to me and I’m super happy I did it.”

On achieving the goals she set for 2023 in February, “At the beginning of this year my goal for me and my team was to break the top 50 and win a WTA title and now it’s only February I already did it! So maybe I have to talk with my team to adjust for the rest of the season.”

67 HOT Magazine

Despite finishing as the runner-up, Tsurenko expressed her contentment with her performance in Hua Hin, and her newfound relief from long-term injury woes in her elbow. “I’m not really happy with the result today but all the credit to my opponent. She played really well, and she took me off balance all the time, hitting full power. She definitely deserved this trophy, and I will just continue working and playing and enjoying things.

“I had a conversation with my team at the beginning of this year that I have no goals, I have no expectations because I was quite tired with the everyday pain. I did not put any pressure on myself. I was just playing in Canberra, in Melbourne, here and I’m really happy that I’m able to play like 13, 14 matches, which for me is incredible. This is the best thing for me, I’m just really happy to be playing.”

Chinese Taipei’s Hao-Ching Chan and Fang-Hsien Wu proved too strong for a tired Zhu Lin and Wang Xinyu in the doubles final, taking the title 61 76(6). On winning the title Hao-Ching Chan said:

HOT Magazine 68

“I think they’re both very good players, singles and doubles, so even though we have an easy first set, we know that it’s gonna be tough in the second set, and we’re happy we fight on to the end and we win the match.

Zhu’s win in Hua Hin is a testament to her hard work and dedication, and it cements her place as a rising star in the world of tennis. With a top 50 ranking now secured, the future looks bright for this talented player.

And while the players were in town for the fierce competition, they also found the time to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of Thailand.

Supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the event gave players the chance to experience the charm of Thai culture while vying for a WTA title and prize money. Bianca Andreescu, Ellen Perez, and eventual champion Zhu Lin took part in a cookery class and learned to make pineapple fried rice. Meanwhile, Japan’s Nao Hibino and Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek tried their hand at Muay Thai at The Legends Arena in BluPort Hua Hin.

The 2019 Thailand Open champion Dayana Yastremska from Ukraine, Katie Boulter from Great Britain, and Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova also got a chance to experience the local art of eco printing under the guidance of His Excellency Suwat Liptapanlop. And, in their downtime, many players took a moment to visit the many temples around Hua Hin, with Yastremska even finding the time to visit some elephants.

It’s clear that the players were not only impressed by the tournament, but by the warm hospitality and culture of Thailand. They left with a newfound appreciation for the country and a vow to return to this beautiful land.

According to Runner-up Lesia Tsurenko: “It was my first time ever in Thailand and I was surprised how beautiful this country is. I’ve been every day at the beach, I’ve been to the night markets and saw so much of the Thailand culture. Big thanks and I hope to come back again.”

Bangkok Riverside Fest Wraps With Record Attendance

What a weekend it was for festival-goers in Bangkok! The 2023 Bangkok Riverside Fest wrapped up on Sunday February 5th after three days of epic fun and festivities by the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and it was a record-breaking year in terms of attendance.

Those joining were treated to a wide range of international and local food and drink vendors, a lifestyle market, dog park, kite workshops, and luxury

VIP tents. As visitors made their way through the festival grounds, the air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of Thai street food. From grilled chicken skewers to spicy papaya salad, there was no shortage of delicious eats.

As the days went on, the festival’s stages came to life with top Thai artists taking the stage to entertain the crowds. From PiXXiE’s upbeat pop anthems to VIOLETTE WAUTIER’s soulful ballads, there was something for every taste. Other top Thai art-

ists performing included POLYCAT, MEAN, LIPTA, 4EVE, Patrick Ananda, and Wanyai featuring. Mon Monik, along with live DJ’s.

As the sun began to set, festival-goers gathered along the riverbank to watch the fireworks display, which lit up the sky with a dazzling array of colors. The atmosphere was electric, with music blasting from the stages and the scent of food lingering in the air.

But the real highlight of the festival was the Elephant Boat Races. These races featured elite teams paddling uniquely Thai-designed boats decorated with artistic elephant-themed sculptures, complete with tails inspired by traditional fish motifs. It’s a true celebration of the best of Thai culture and a sight to behold.

This year eight men’s and women’s teams battled it out on the water for the King’s Cup trophy, graciously granted by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralong-

korn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, and the Bangkok Governor’s Chadchart Sittipunt trophy.

The Klong Phai - JW Blue Label team came out on top in the men’s race, beating JW Blue Label, Royal Navy - Indorama, and Thailand National Sports University Lampang - Bangkok Bank.

The Klong Phai - Thai Union Group PCL team took home the victory in the women’s race, beating out the Thailand National Sports University Chiang Mai - Price Waterhouse Coopers team,

Kasetsart University - UOB Thailand team, and the Nawaminthrachinuthit Triam Udomsuksa Pattanakarn School - Casillero del Diablo team, claiming the Bangkok Governor’s Chadchart Sittipunt trophy.

In addition to the elephant-themed boat race, the festival also featured tug-of-war style boat battles, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), and kayaking competitions, open to both amateur and professional kayakers and SUP boarders.

Not only was the festival a blast, but it also supported a great cause. Proceeds from ticket sales were donated to an elephant conservation project via the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation. The festival’s organizers were proud to be able to use the event to support such a worthy cause, and festival-goers were happy to be able to enjoy themselves while giving back to the community.

As the weekend drew to a close, visitors left the festival grounds with a sense of fulfillment and a desire to come back next year. The 2023 Bangkok Riverside Fest had been a true success, bringing people from all walks of life together to celebrate and enjoy the best that Thai culture has to offer.

For some, it had been a chance to indulge in their favorite foods or discover new ones. For others, it had been an opportunity to see their favorite artists perform live. And for everyone, it had been a chance to come together and celebrate the sense of community that makes Bangkok such a special place.

As the final notes of the last concert faded away and the lights of the festival were turned off, festival-goers headed home, tired but happy. They knew that they had been a part of something truly special, and that the 2023 Bangkok Riverside Fest would be remembered as one of the best events of the year.
