A.C. PERCH’S Tea was one of the most important products traded at the end of the 18th century and many merchants established and obtained their goods from docking ships at Christianshavn in Copenhagen. Among these merchants was Niels Brock Perch the founder of A.C. Perch´s Tea Shop. The idea was to sell the best teas from all over the world and today this is still their most important task. Seven generations of tea merchants have owned the family business and the historical tea shop has not changed much in 180 years. OCCUPATION MUSEUM The new Occupation Museum illustrates the history of Aarhus during World War II. Visitors can experience history through storytelling about people who lived during this dramatic period. The exhibitions especially focus on people’s daily lives and on the German soldiers as people and occupiers. AARHUS THEATRE The listed building just opposite the Cathedral was designed by the architect Hack Kampmann, and was inaugurated in 1900. The theatre has an all-embracing repertoire during the season from early mid-August until mid-June, including some 15 of its own productions and also a few guest performances. The lavishly adorned faรงade of Aarhus Theatre has an enticing magic of its very own, and the spell and allure are even greater when you pass through the doors and enter the theatre with its glittering chandeliers and extravagantly gold-decorated ceilings and interiors.

AARHUS CATHEDRAL The building of Aarhus Cathedral was started in the last decades of the 12th Century. The Cathedral – a magnificent Romanesque basilica – was a gigantic project, not finished until about 1350. The outer walls of this Cathedral and the beautiful chapels along the eastern wall of the transept are the only surviving Romanesque elements today. The Cathedral, as it otherwise stands today, is the result of radical rebuilding in the Gothic style, undertaken from 1449 till about 1500, transforming the heavy and sombre building into a Gothic cathedral. CITY HALL Architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller won the 1937 competition to design a new city hall for Aarhus. But the original project hit a snag in 1942 when the people of Aarhus realised their city hall would have no tower. They were not at all happy. Many of them thought that the city’s most important building should be monumental. And although it was a time of modern ideas and democracy, it had to have a tower. So the architects added a 60-metre rectangular tower to the original plan. This tower is clad in sheets of marble topped by a concrete structure with six balconies and two clock faces. MARSELISBORG SLOT Marselisborg Palace is the summer residence of the Royal family. During the summer, when the Royal family is in residence at the Palace, the Changing of the Guard by the Life Guard takes place at noon every day. The Palace grounds, including the Queen’s rose garden, are open to the public when the Royal family is not in residence. Marselisborg Palace was given by the people of Denmark as a wedding gift to the Crown Prince Christian (later Christian X) and his consort Princess Alexandrine. MINDEPARKEN The Memorial Park is just below the castle grounds (Marselisborg Palace), facing out over the Bay. A memorial wall in the Marselisborg Memorial Park bears the names of the 4,144 South Jutland Danes who lost their lives on compulsory service in the Kaiser’s forces during the Great War.
