NEWS AND COMMENT Only a couple of things this month REMEMBER COMMITTEE MEETING – Wednesday 25th September at the Six Bells Newdigate 8 pm –All welcome! Working Party Saturday 12th October This was planned in at our last Committee Meeting for Northlands – however please give Tim a ring on 01306 712317 if you are thinking of coming as we may change the venue – or the date – depending on weather etc – it would just be for the morning to clear areas for sections. Articles for Newsletter I know Dick has been wishing for some contributions for more years than you can imagine so thanks to our Chairman for sending the following from the South of France… - please remember any contributions are always welcome and help fill the pages ……… Villas and meetings As you read this I will be sunning myself in my capacious villa in the South of France. Sitting in my shady garden enjoying the fragrance of the exotic flowers scattered around our extensive grounds. Soon Dickie the house hobbit will arrive offering me a refreshing glass of chilled champers. The above image is what our beloved Editor would have you believe as he constantly mentions our villa in France. This is also the sort of place I expected would become ours having taken the job of Chairman a couple of years ago. The salary and perks offered at the time would have easily supported the purchase and up keep of a villa – sadly despite constant nagging no salary has been paid, although I an assured that a cheque is in the post. In reality we have an apartment ( all 40 square meters of it ). It is very nice and close to the Med but it is not the palace our Hon. Editor would have you believe! On a more serious note Dick mentioned the forthcoming committee meeting. Like most amateur clubs HR’s organisation is done by a few

people. There is nothing wrong in that but there is always the problem that only the ideas of those few will be used to run the club and that, in turn may mean the membership does not get out of the club all that it could. The meeting is on Wednesday the 25th of September at the Six Bells Newdigate. If you can come along great – but if you can’t but have any ideas/suggestions for social events or trials formats do let us know. If you don’t tell us your ideas we can’t consider them. PS For all you Harry Potter fans J K Rowling based her character Dobbie the house elf on Dickie the house hobbit. PPS The first of the Hobbit films is out and is entitled “ An unexpected journey “. The title was inspired by our chief hobbit’s approach to trials riding as this repeatedly lead to “ An unexpected result “ . Ian Mac

ROME SOLIDIFIES

Trial – 1st September 2013

For years the wettest, muddiest of reputations was attributed to Rome Woods, many riders have retired there, but not anymore, Sunday’s trial was like riding on concrete. The splits in the ground were 18 inches deep but riders complaints were hard bumps with ‘no give’ in the soil resulting in aching arms and shoulders – Sean P was DNF, the twin shock had not been assisting and he wished for his modern bike! Team Cossacks Adrian and Adam, John P and Dave A (the original Teabag had his loyalty day) and Mike stepped in to replace Tim who was at Silverstone for the GP practice. Mike gave the white riders a good workout (1/2 way score 80), apparently he’d been easing them off a bit earlier on! Blue riders on the other hand had an easy day, while yellows were about right. Another feature of the hard ground was the pain when you hit it, Mike crunched his shoulder and Graham K had some difficulties too, both DNF. Backward to signing on where arrivals were slow with some rare species making an appearance i.e. Dave Renham who was destined for 1st place on White and John Mitchell 2nd on Blue. Dave said if he’d wanted a good trial he’d have gone to Bagshot, so I’ve come here!

The Bray clan had been absent for 3 trials; Nigel explained - one trial Tom had been out at night getting happy, the next event Elaine went copycat, in both cases the excess of intoxicants did not permit an early morning start – as they are part of next months’ team we can only hope for improvement. We only ended up with 33 entries, gone are the days of regular 50 and over, even today, out of the 33 at least 16 were from other clubs – where are all our members? According to the chef in my local hostelry “it’s the last weekend of the school holidays – always the quietest” and we only got 1 schoolboy entry, perhaps he was right! So plenty of time for the social scene to develop, in other words the gossip. Tom H is always an earlybird so he had plenty of time to listen to the tale of Mike’s tent/awning that fixed to the side of his van - a special purchase for a two day trial. On finishing the trial he finds both blown away so slept in his van on his airbed. This punctures and deflates in the night resulting in severe backache and pain killers for a week, he won’t be camping again! Then there was Silverstone from Fiona, a Range Rover prototype that wouldn’t start from John P until we reached start time. A little while after Rob E arrived – he’d been having problems with his carb and wouldn’t leave home till it started, it went OK for the trial but the rider was more of a problem! Finding sections with riders on is difficult, particularly when they’re all spread out. Rachel and Simon riding reds have an easy ride on 10 losing few marks overall but by then Elaine had given up as her balance was not with her. Obviously more liquid refreshment was needed!! Section 10 was the long ditch uphill, plenty of grip but bumps to throw you off, eventually a gaggle of riders turned up – Sean has a dab but Dave R cleans as do Mike H and Craig C. Rich E riding blue tries and cleans, reckons he might start up a class next time. Rob Mc and Adrian H tackle it slowly and clean with ease. On section 9 to my surprise Gordon and Kieran are not losing marks but the big surprise is at the finish, it’s the first time Kieran has finished a trial and 2 marks in front of Rob E, bring on the rain! Mick D says he’d lost 4 x 5 on Section 7 where I hear there is actually some soft going (mud!) – I think this is where Graham K came a cropper. John P marked out Yellows – the only marks I saw him lose were on section 5 beside where the stream used to be – 2 dabs here, it got wetter later on.

Finishing Touches – Blue Route – Tom H liked the hard stuff and was 9 marks clear of John M with Rob Mc and Rich E close, then 20 marks on is Tim, not enjoying the hard stuff so much, he had a 3 when he rode up section 7 ditch with a lot of bounce. Adrian H set up the route and was trying to make it look hard to help Harry R! Yellow Route – RRND rider Trevor H was best rider and Mike B who had entered as an HR Rider was 2nd but 1st HR home. It was another 23 marks before we got to the 2nd HR which was course marker John P. Then look at Adam’s good result, level with Mick D, both on 46 – that’s Rossi’s number so they’re on track to be winners! Gordon and Nigel were only a mark apart – but Kieran ? – well he finished! White Route – For Dave R to stay and finish one of our events is unusual; Mike says it was because he was in someone else’s van who wouldn’t stop. Mick M was only a point away and Craig C had a good day, his riding with Mike Hyden rubbed off a bit but Mike is new to Whites and improving all the time. Tom B was dnf due to clutch problems, not the drink! Reds had it easy. Simon and Rachel didn’t tire, when going up to Yellows was mentioned Simon reckoned he’s peaked! The weather had been so kind everyone seemed reluctant to leave – whilst we can’t give the Cossacks a pat on the back for that, they had provided us with what was adjudged to be a good trial and they don’t often say that at Rome Woods.

SE Group Trial Ockley, 11.8.13 Being local and run by Reigate and Redhill I thought we’d see a large HR entry but there was only 5 out of an entry of over 50. Looking at the results it was surprising to see Jim Scott and Derek Cranfield riding in the wobblers class but they only dropped 3 marks.
