TRAINING FOR THE BHS STAGE 1 CERTIFICATE IN HORSE KNOWLEDGE AND CARE The BHS Exam system is one of the most well recognised qualifications in the equine industry. Horses & Courses are now able to offer training and mock examinations to prepare candidate for the BHS at stage one to three in Horse Knowledge and Care. More information on the BHS exam system can be found on the BHS website www.bhs.org.uk. Training is offered on a Tuesday evening at Thurleigh Equestrian Centre from 6.30pm – 8.30pm. Various start dates available. The course is run by Mark Townsend BHSI and equine author and trainer Beth Maloney. You can study an individual unit or all three units. Entry Requirements This training is suitable for candidates from 14 years old, however there is a minimum age of 15 years, if you wish to sit the BHS Examination. COURSE FEES £95.00 per unit or £250.00 for the three unit course ( 10 weeks) Credit card payments can be made if you pay through the Horses and Courses online payment method at www.horsesandcourses.co.uk COURSE STRUCTURE UNIT 1 - HORSE HUSBANDRY, IDENTIFICATION AND HANDLING ( 3 weeks) Health and Safety Candidates will show safe working practice for themselves, the horse, equipment and others around them. This will include wearing gloves and fastened hat when leading the horse.. Safe lifting and carrying Procedures and potentially hazardous situations will be recognised and discussed. You will be able to demonstrate how to lift a sack of feed and/or bale of hay or straw in a safe manner and how to carry water, and recognise the potential hazards of doing these incorrectly. Horse Husbandry - looking after the horse’s bedding You will be able to identify common types of bedding and why they would be used, know how to look after different types of bedding, be able to skip out and tidy up bedding, muck out and put a bed down, describe how to build and maintain a muck heap and keep all areas swept and tidy. Identification and handling You will know the basic points of the horse, their colours and markings, show how to stand a horse up correctly for inspection in the stable and/or outside, demonstrate how to lead and turn horses at walk and trot. You will be able to show how to hold a reasonably quiet horse for treatment, shoeing and clipping, and how to show how to stand up and hold a horse for treatment or inspection
