FOREWORD

BY THE FEI PRESIDENT

Last year, the recommendations of the Ljungqvist and Stevens Commissions laid out a clear roadmap for improving governance and compliance issues, opening the way for a new era of Clean Sport. In 2009, the FEI continued to work on education, the professionalisation of more roles in the sport and the need to redefine protocols. The FEI family’s overwhelming support for the recommendations and its endorsement of the new Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations mean that we can now take concrete action that will benefit our athletes, our community and our public. I would like to thank Lord Stevens and Professor Ljungqvist for paving the way to ensuring the removal of improper practices from our sport.

I would also like to thank our sponsors – Alltech, HSBC and Rolex – for their precious support and loyalty. This year, the FEI was also proud and delighted to enter into a partnership with Meydan, the company behind the world’s first integrated equine, leisure, entertainment and business development in Dubai. Their sponsorship of the FEI Nations Cup was a very special gift to the event in its 100th anniversary year, which was marked by a truly exciting series of competitions that led to the French team’s overall victory. Although Italy finished the eight-leg Meydan FEI Nations Cup™ series in eighth place, newly-appointed chef d’equipe Markus Fuchs demonstrated great leadership skills by guiding his team to a remarkable victory at the final event in Dublin.

Equestrian heroes in five categories were celebrated at the revamped FEI Awards in Copenhagen in November. I would like to congratulate Wendy Gidlow from Africa (Alltech Development Award), Alex Hua Tian, from China (HSBC Rising Star Award), Michelle Robson, Australia (Best Groom Award) and Darlene Milord, Haiti (Against All Odds Award) and inspirational rider Meredith Michaels Beerbaum, Germany, who took the award for Best Athlete. We hope that when the awards are launched in 2010, the response to our call for nominees will match this year’s, which went far beyond our expectations, with over 1,300 nominations from the global equestrian community. It is an honour for the FEI to be able to pay tribute to those who personify the passion, dedication and determination that are, and must remain, the core values of our sport.

I would like to express my gratitude to the Executive and of course to the Volunteer Body for their continual and unstinting dedication. 2010 looks set to be a challenging but exciting year and their support will be vital. My warmest thoughts also go to the organisers and sponsors of all the events in 2010, which will once again showcase equestrian excellence. Dressage Championships at Windsor in August enabled France to celebrate its first individual European title for ten years. Meanwhile, the sensational Dutch duo of Edward Gal and Moorlands Tortillas re-set freestyle world records three times and, in December, scored an impressive 92.30% at the HRH Princess Haya fourth leg of the FEI World Cup Dressage Series in London.

In August, the FEI’s first Year of Youth began, with the aim of giving a voice to the new generation of riders. I am happy to say that their voice is strong and passionate and that their hopes are high. When the first Youth Olympic Games take place in Singapore this August, the world will witness just

For the FEI, 2009 has been a challenging year, but ultimately one that has seen effective steps taken to ensure that equestrian sport continues to develop with integrity, fair-play and equine welfare as its guiding principles.

Although the economic crisis took its toll on many companies and organisations, the FEI was able to report a positive balance for the financial year 2009. Not only did our commercial revenue increase by 26%, the number of international events organised in all our disciplines rose, totalling 2,683, compared to 2,404 in 2008.

Regular, fluent communication is essential to the FEI’s commitment to better serving NFs and, in 2009, the NF Liaison Office continued to facilitate dialogue, allowing us to identify the nature of challenges the NFs face. It is not always possible for the FEI to provide ideal solutions, but we are dedicated to improving our ability to address the concerns of Member National Federations.

That commitment is also a challenge in the context of a significant increase of the FEI’s overall activity, whether measured by revenues, the number of events or projects. While staff numbers have risen over the years, our activity has increased at greater levels, resulting in significant improvements in annual staff productivity. The year 2009 ended with 52 employees working at the FEI in Lausanne and overall staff productivity having increased by 17% in the last five years, when considering the number of events administered by our team.

Improving efficiency sometimes involves taking a new look at organisational structure. This year, I had the pleasure of meeting members of regional Group IX in Nairobi and Group VIII representatives in Taipei, among other National Federation representatives, to discuss a proposal to restructure FEI governance. Although the project was ultimately not approved at the FEI General Assembly in Copenhagen, the question of governance will continue to evolve through dialogue with all NFs.

The FEI’s well-established relationship with Alltech, Rolex and HSBC continued in 2009 and we were delighted to enter a partnership with Meydan in February. Meydan City is a visionary concept founded on the principles of partnership, community and sporting excellence and the FEI is proud to be associated with a company whose philosophy matches our own. The first Meydan FEI Nations Cup™ was an exciting season and the synergy between Meydan and the prominent series was fruitful, leading to a renewal of the partnership for 2010.

Preparations for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ progressed in Lexington, where the permanent structures that are being added to the Kentucky Horse Park will benefit it long after the Games are over. I wish the organising team good luck for the work that lies ahead of them and look forward to seeing the event staged on US soil for the first time.

The FEI Bureau awarded the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games™ to the region of Normandy in March. The bid committee and French Equestrian Federation spent eight years working on their proposal and presented a project of outstanding quality. I am delighted that the French government and regional authorities are showing such enthusiastic support.

In October, the FEI President and I attended the Olympic Congress in Copenhagen. The theme, “The Olympic Movement in Society”, reflected the reality of sport as an integral part of our society and the lively debates focused on guiding the Olympic Movement through another century in a relevant and viable way.

Since the 2008 Olympic Games, the FEI has continued to work with the Olympic Movement on developing the blueprint for the London 2012 Olympics and the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. This year, FEI staff and volunteers worked hand in hand with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) on issues such as planning, structure and development.

Risk management remains a major task for the FEI. In September, the new FEI Eventing Risk Management policy and vision statements were presented at the HSBC FEI European Eventing

Championships at Fontainebleau, France. The policy and action plan are based on a six-year statistical study of the sport and constitute a system for monitoring risk factors and streamlining international data and ideas to increase our understanding of the root causes of falls. The FEI General Assembly endorsed the Risk Management Programme, which will be launched at the third annual FEI Safety meeting in Sweden in January 2010. In addition to other goals aimed at mitigating risk in the sport, the Eventing Committee aims to reduce horse falls by 10% (20% at 4-star level) over the next three years.

The 2009 General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of the new Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (EADCMR) and the associated Equine Prohibited Substances List. It also adopted the recommendations of the Ljungqvist and Stevens Commissions to combat doping in our sport.

These recommendations revolve around three key elements: the new Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (EADCMR) and its associated Equine Prohibited Substances List, professionalisation of the sport and an Equestrian Community Integrity Unit to monitor compliance and safeguard horse welfare.

Due to ensuing debate about the in-competition use of NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) within strictly prescribed limits, broader consultation and supplementary research is planned, with the new Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations coming into force on 5 April 2010 instead of 1 January as originally scheduled.

The Joint-Commission recommendations also led to a decision to create an Equestrian Community Integrity Unit (ECIU).

Quest Limited, an internationally renowned organisation that specialises in sports investigations, is operating the ECIU, which was launched at the 2009 General Assembly. A telephone hotline and email address are key elements in its intelligence gathering system and will enable concerns relating to integrity issues to be reported in an appropriate manner.

Partly in response to the need to professionalise more roles

in equestrian sport, the FEI has established an Education and Standards Department, headed by Harald Müller. The department is responsible for the development, standardisation and operation of FEI education curricula. It also deals with defining and applying standards related to FEI disciplines and associate disciplines, as well as those related to NFs and organisations interfacing with the FEI. Another key responsibility is the development and operation of an educational support system. This year, the department developed systems of education for Dressage Judges, Jumping Course Designers and Jumping and Dressage Stewards.

The launch of FEI TV (www.feitv.org) in March has provided a great new opportunity for our sport. As traditional and new media merge with increasing speed, I strongly believe it is essential to attracting new audiences, particularly young people, to equestrian sports. Not only can we now show and promote disciplines and events that are rarely or never broadcast on television, we can also reach territories where coverage of horse sport is limited or non-existent. The possibilities for this global platform are numerous and mean that the FEI and its stakeholders can prepare for a new age of digital broadcasting.

In 2010 the equestrian athletes, community and public have many exciting events to look forward to. It is with great satisfaction and pleasure that I witness FEI disciplines developing throughout the world and an honour for the FEI to advance that growth in a humane and sportsmanlike manner.

Stewarding System The Stewarding system has been restructured and should be ready for implementation in 2010.

Education of Officials The streamlining of Education systems will enable one integrated system for all officials across all disciplines, with ongoing evaluation and external verification of procedures.

Horse Welfare and Clean Sport The Committee will continue to monitor the situation on footing, boot controls and hyper-sensitisation.

EVENTING COMMITTEE Over the course of 2009, the Eventing Committee held two meetings. The first took place in Barroca d’Alva (POR) in March; the second was a conference call in September 2009.

These meetings addressed, among others, the following: Eventing Rules FEI Rules for Eventing 23rd edition amendments / updates to be implemented 1 July 2009 and 1 January 2010.

A number of proposed rule clarifications were submitted to the General Assembly and approved. Throughout the year, progress was also made on the FEI Education system for Driving Officials, to be completed and ready for phased-in implementation early 2010.

ENDURANCE COMMITTEE The FEI Endurance Committee held regular meetings by teleconference. The key topics, efforts and achievements in 2009 are summarised below: The new FEI Education System is in place and the revised Level I and Level II courses/examinations have been well received. The updated Course for Endurance Technical Delegates is also now completed. A comprehensive course for Endurance Veterinarians, presented several times in 2009, has also been very well received.

Other related matters include the revision of the Endurance Veterinary Delegate Report, and the development of a new list of Endurance Veterinarian Course Directors for publication.

The FEI Hydra Educational Support Scheme for developing Nations was quite active throughout 2009. The FEI/Hydra Programme provides for an approved FEI Senior Endurance Judge/Technical Delegate and/or FEI Senior Endurance Veterinarian to initially give detailed technical support to an FEI National Equestrian Federation in the planning stage, to be followed by a visit to the country in question. The concept of the scheme is to assist Nations in establishing a structured programme of development commencing initially at ‘grass roots level’, thereby establishing a foundation upon which a National and thereafter International Endurance Competition Calendar can be created. The financial support provides for the costs and expenses of the pre and post course/competition technical support and the one or two visits by the FEI representatives. Funding is also available to meet associated costs in the organisation of the National Endurance Competition. Further such projects will be carried into 2010.

A number of important Championships were successfully held in 2009, namely the 5th FEI World Endurance Championships for Juniors and Young Riders in Babolna (HUN) on 5 September with twenty three countries entered into the competition; the North American Endurance Championships for Juniors and Young Riders in Henryville, Indiana, in conjunction with the FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships; the FEI European Endurance Championship in Assisi (ITA) and the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Test Event in Lexington (USA).

The Copenhagen meeting was overshadowed by the discussions about the consequences of the Hong Kong occurrences, the proposals of the Ethics Panel and the decision of the Bureau regarding this topic. The NFs present from Groups I and II expressed their unanimous confidence in the German officials in general and in the Chair of Group II in particular. FEI accepted their decision.

GROUP IV - Discussed the continued improvements in the Dressage and Jumping Challenges and also the difficulties associated with the costs of judge travel and the scoring system generally; - reported on the FEI Development Programme, including its organisation and availability of funding which included discussions on future funding for development and scholarships; - analysed the audit results and planned for more coach and rider training underwritten by the United States Equestrian Federation and Equine Canada; - the island countries briefed the Group on planned participation of the Central American Games including sites for 2010 and 2011 and the qualification procedures.

A new event was conceptualised, tentatively titled “The Islands Festival,” to be held in Wellington, Florida, perhaps as part of the Winter Equestrian Festival. The festival would combine an amateur rider from the islands with a professional competing in Wellington; - sponsorship and cultural opportunities were discussed with a possible start date of 2010. Much conversation was generated by the notion of integrating PAEC with PASO and the cooperative efforts between Groups IV, V, and VI to make it happen. Each of the three regional American Groups have pledged support to make it a reality.

GROUP V

- discussed the intention of the SIEC series to introduce a new category for the 2010 Jumping Finals at 1.15 mts. The category would help the Group’s member countries to participate at a lower level and promote this category for more riders. Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico , Honduras , Venezuela & Colombia agreed to confirm their participation; - obtained a waiver for Piroplasmosis for the Central American and Caribbean Games; - received visits in Guatemala, Puerto Rico and El Salvador from the coaches assigned by Mr David O’Connor in the context of the USEF/FEI plan. Guatemala held four CCIs 1* and 2* as part of the programme; - received several visits from FEI Eventing Development Officer Jose Ortelli as part of the FEI programme; - elected Cesar Camargo from Colombia in CPH as the second Group member on the PAEC board; - decided that each disciple should be represented by one person: Dressage: Mrs. Maribel Alonso (MEX); Endurance: Mr. Fernando Paiz (GUA); Jumping: Cesar Hirsch (VEN); Eventing: Ms. Mercedes Campdera (MEX); - appointed Carmen Barrera (ES) as Deputy Chair; - decided to set up a Veterinary Commission, coordinated by Mr Juan Andres Sauce (VEN), to work on sanitary issues; - ran a promotion course for jumping in Guatemala for national judges and another in Colombia for FEI C and I judges; - ran a regional course for Technical Delegate and Judges for Eventing; - discussed with FEI Education and Standards director Harald Müller the possibility of implementing a course for the education of grooms in the Group’s region.

- Decided to hold YOG qualification at FEI Challenge 2010 for all Group V members except Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela. Mexico had already held its qualifier in July in Lexington during the young riders competition in Kentucky.

General Alex McLin and FEI Legal Counsel Francisco Lima; - Reported confirmation that the Pan American Sport Organization (PASO) and its 42 members’ National Olympic Committees would recognise and fully support the Pan American Equestrian Committee (PAEC), composed of Groups IV, V and VI; - reported that a high number of National Federations from Groups V and VI represented equestrian sport at the South American Regional Games in Medellín, Colombia; - held several Level 1 and 2 Coaching System Courses in different countries from the Group. The first Level 3 Coaching in the world took place in Ecuador with remarkable results; - worked closely together to obtain for South America the allocation of the 2011 Endurance World Junior Championship.

GROUP VII - Discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the Arab League; - formed the Advisory Group for FEI Regional Group VII i.e. the Technical Committee, which had suggested various recommendations as a result of several meetings held during 2009; - divided the Arab League into Sub-Leagues (between Middle East, North Africa and the G.C.C); - discussed qualifications to the WEG 2010 for Endurance & Jumping; - discussed Veterinary Issues in terms of import-export formalities, vaccinations and issues; - reported that the Arab League FEI World Cup™ Jumping Season is back to normal – starts in Sept and ends in January; - discussed qualifications for the Youth Olympic Games 2010, Singapore; - discussed qualifications for the Olympic Games 2012, London, Great Britain; - discussed encouraging the top and promotional league FEI Nations Cup Series within FEI Geographical Group VII countries; - discussed the implementation of the new Endurance Rules in 2009 and their impact; - discussed procuring invitations for Qualified Arab League Riders to participate in Europe before the FEI World Cup™ Final; - discussed enacting the Regionalisation procedure with the help of the OIE, to enable free horse movement over borders and to consider the Arab Countries to be Free of Disease countries; - discussed a Uniform Health Certificate for Arab Countries; - established a financial fund to support the major championships in the region; - discussed the Tent Pegging development activity led by the NF Oman; - discusssed encouraging more varied age group competitions in the region; - discussed the compulsory rest period for horses set by the FEI in endurance ride championships organised in the G.C.C and the Middle-East.

GROUP VIII - Reported strong opposition from AUS, JPN, TPE, KOR and SIN NFs to the Jumping Committee’s proposal to realign the nations in the Qualifications Procedure for the 2012 London Olympic Games. They consider that the proposed merger of the 28 nations from Europe’s Group C with the 18 nations in Asia & Oceania Group G to form an overall qualifying group of 48 nations with a European qualifier is unfair, unbalanced and disadvantageous to non-European and developing nations: - reported that AUS NF acknowledged the soundness of the underlying notion of the Olympic Games Qualification System (ie. That every country has two opportunities to earn a place to the Olympic games – WEG and their individual qualifier) but pointed out that analysis reveals a significant imbalance of equality; - reported AUS NF’s suggestion that the Technical Committees has a defined mechanism for allowing greater contributions and debate from NFs, athletes and organisers; - reported TPE NF’s surprise that FEI did not propose to organise Group C and Group F qualifications together; - reported KOR NF’s observation that for the London Olympic Games, Group G has only two team quotas and two individual ones in amalgamation with Group C, which it considers unfair and disadvantageous to Group G. At the Athens Olympic Games, there were three team Quotas and five individual ones for group G and F; - reported the AEF Dressage Committee’s strong opposition to the 2012 London Olympic Qualification Procedure proposal. The Committee considers the proposal favours European nations and is contradictory to the principles of Olympism – the universality and equality of sports – as well as to the FEI development policy; - discussed a proposal from AUS NFs for a regional coaching and riding development programme for riders, judges and technical delegates and an event management exchange programme. The programmes would enable participants to assist with and learn from the planning and organisation of events in the region.

GROUP IX - Reported that a successful Regional Meeting was held in July. Twelve of the thirteen members were present or represented, in addition to the President and The Secretary General. Communication and cooperation within the Group is consistently improving and the increased pace of development in almost all disciplines is clearly evident.

Representation from the Group at the WEG is expected to double in terms of disciplines and athletes; - discussed the fact that the small sizes and financial constraints of the majority of the NFs in the Group seriously hinder its evolution. Decided more effort must be made to broaden support bases and use available expertise in the Group to improve the situation. The appointment of two Regional FEI Tutors will be of great assistance to improving coaching and training systems; - discussed the need for more education and promotion in

A Tutors course took place in Turkey to educate eight Tutors from Russia, Greece, Turkey, South Africa and Mauritius simultaneously with a refreshment course for Senior Tutors (see list of Seminars and Courses page 42)

Each Group worked on a specific “Role of the Coach” issues: - What should coaches plan for and how do they do it ?

- What should the coaches see and how do they see it best?

- What and how is the best time/best way to give feedback?

From day 2 throughout the competition, the FEI Experts worked alternatively each day with the coaches on the following two classical themes directly linked to the competitions: - How to coordinate and plan young athletes’ training – Long Term Athlete Development, by Jean-Philippe Camboulives FEI Workshop for Coaches In conjunction with the Copa International Mitad del - Mental Fitness and Methodology – How to manage mental fitness in athletes and more specifically young Mundo (CSI-Ch Cat. A, B & C), which took place for the athletes by Liam Moggan.

Guatemala designed new cross country tracks in different locations. New riders appeared in the sport and potential FEI Officials were identified and trained in view of helping in the organisation of the Central American Games in March 2010. Guatemala is making a huge effort to keep the sport growing and with more work in 2010, they can envisage having a team competing at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011.

El Salvador has big plans for the sport of Eventing. New riders from Jumping moved to Eventing. The climatic conditions in the country are ideal for this discipline. The facilities are amongst the best in the region and with the help of the FEI Development Programme, the sport will develop rapidly.

Additional technical visits are planned in 2010 to qualify a Team for the Central American Games in Guatemala and the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico.

Cnl. Juan Carlos Nuñez Araujo gave a clinic to all riders about the changes of Eventing Rules and Training. In addition, Mr Jeferson Sgnaolin Moreira from Brasil, Olympic Rider, talked about his experience at the Olympic Games, how to develop from the lower level in Brazil to the Olympic Games.

The preparation of riders and horses and the facilities were subjects of discussions. The URU NF has undertaken the development of their sports structures with the help of the FEI and the results are now visible.

Mexico is growing fast in all disciplines, with Eventing leading this trend these last four years, thanks to a very responsive NF always ready to cooperate to develop the sport. All the possible venues for the Pan Am Games have been visited with all the conditions in place for the Eventing Competition in Guadalajara. The plan is to develop Eventing in other sites near the city in 2010. This should serve as the base for the sport before the Pan American Games. Mexico will soon have riders capable of competing at the highest level.

Columbia is one of the newcomers in the FEI Eventing Development Programme. In 2009, four clinics were scheduled, which ended with a CNC event under 1* level at different cross country places. The COL NF has some up and coming riders in the discipline. Their goal is to prepare a team for the Central American and Caribbean Games 2010.

Jamaica organised for the first time in Jamaica a riders’ clinic and some seminars for potential officials and organisers.

Coaches and riders from Barbados, Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica attended. Topics such as the Welfare of the Horse and how to create systems where the horse would want to take cross-country jumps without stress or being forced, were taught to the attendees. Jamaica is another country that has all the required conditions to develop Eventing.

The fourth Inter-Africa Vaulting Cup took place in Swaziland, returning to the Emerald Kingdom after two years in South Africa.

Vaulting Development Programme Inter-Africa Vaulting Cup 2009 (Swazi-Lizkhar Stud, Swaziland)

Seventy-five vaulters (from 21 teams and a number of individual entries) from five countries — Malawi (4 vaulters), Mauritius (11 vaulters), South Africa (42 vaulters), Swaziland (13 vaulters) and Zambia (5 vaulters) — entered this year.

This Final took place in the framework of a CSI-Ch and CSI for Pre-Juniors. All together, 21 nations were represented.

These CSIs for Youth on borrowed horses are popular in Latin America and are a good motivation for Children and Juniors.

Alongside the Final, the first international Reining competition took place at Club de Polo San Cristobal.

FEI World Jumping Challenge Contrary to last year, the two categories of this world series have shown a slight increase in the number of participants.

Approximately 100 riders more than last year took part in the Category A. The Category B is stable with a slight increase.

Club de Polo San Cristobal is a green oasis in the middle of Santiago. Polo and the equestrian disciplines are practiced there. The Club counts more than 1,000 horses and owns 25 hectares of land, employing more than 2,000 people.

The club house includes a restaurant, swimming pool and nursery for children.

FEI COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES

The commercial activities of the FEI have considerably expanded over the last few years, with many initiatives and projects enhancing the value and exposure of the FEI and the sport as a whole. A report regarding 2009 activities outlines some of these endeavours, in particular with regards to Sponsorship, Television, FEI TV, Digital Media and Merchandising & Licensing is provided below.

FEI SPONSORSHIPS

HSBC Now in its second partnership year, HSBC’s sponsorship of Eventing considerably expanded in 2009. As title sponsor of the HSBC FEI World Cup™, HSBC FEI Classics™ and HSBC FEI European Eventing Championship, HSBC gained global exposure and visibility, notably through on-site branding activation, bespoke hospitality programmes and dedicated media coverage.

2009 has been an incredibly busy and successful year for the FEI and its partners, not only welcoming Meydan as a new title sponsor of the FEI Nations Cup™ but also showcasing great marketing and PR activation for HSBC, Rolex and Alltech across the season.

Meydan Meydan is the name behind the development of the United Arab Emirate’s landmark racecourse aiming to become the biggest equestrian sporting venue in the world. The new partnership signed between the FEI and Meydan brought the Meydan FEI Nations Cup™ to new levels and gave Meydan the opportunity to promote itself as the heartland of the business and horse world in the East. The synergy between Meydan and the highest quality team Jumping competition

The FEI’s oldest series, the Meydan FEI Nations Cup™ celebrated in 2009 its 100th anniversary and featured the ten best national Jumping teams in the world competing at eight of the best venues throughout Europe with a final event at the world famous Dublin Horse Show in August.

The 2009 HSBC FEI World Cup™ season kick-started back in April in Kihikihi (NZL). Nine qualifiers were held throughout the season in nine countries, spanning three continents.

The Qualifiers’ season eventually culminated in Strzegom (POL) where the HSBC FEI World Cup™ Final saw Michael Jung (GER) claim the title. This was the first time, since the inception of the series in 2002, that the FEI Eventing World Cup™ Final travelled to Eastern Europe. The great turn-over of top riders, media, horse fans as well as the unconditional support of HSBC allowed this event to reach a new level never witnessed before.

The HSBC FEI Classics™, the FEI flagship series uniting the top end of the international Eventing circuit at the leading 4-Star competitions currently on the calendar, offers the biggest prize pot in Eventing on an annual basis. At the end of each season, the five riders with the greatest number of

points are awarded prize-money. The HSBC FEI Classics™ is now a well established circuit and together with the FEI, event organisers and HSBC, all efforts are combined to increase the visibility of the FEI Classics and take them to the next level.

The beautiful surroundings of Fontainebleau (FRA) welcomed the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championship in September 2009. HSBC was the title sponsor of the competition and achieved tremendous success through a dedicated activation strategy targeting key stakeholders of the banking, insurance and horse industry. Media exposure and TV distribution of the HSBC FEI Eventing European Championship also reached unequalled results so far.

The Rolex FEI World Cup™ 2008-09 series culminated in a fantastic Final in Las Vegas where Rolex testimonee Meredith Michaels Beerbaum won her 2nd Rolex FEI World Cup™ title in a row with her now legendary horse Shutterfly.

The FEI is extremely pleased that Rolex have agreed to pursue the long-standing partnership with the FEI for at least another three years until 2013. The finals of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ have been allocated to Leipzig (GER) in 2011, s’Hertogenbosch (NED) in 2012 and finally to Gothenburg (SWE) in 2013.

Alltech Meanwhile, the partnership with Alltech, title sponsor of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™, was further enhanced with the sponsorship of the 2009 Alltech FEI Rolex The partnership with Rolex, which includes the TV magazine European Jumping and Dressage Championships that took “FEI Equestrian World”, the Rolex Rankings and the Rolex place in August in Windsor (GBR).

Going forward, further production enhancements will be considered and added.

Other production highlights in 2009 included: - High Definition production, which has commenced this year and will increase in 2010 - Introduction of educational items in the Dressage highlights programmes with experts explaining movements such as the piaffe, passage and pirouettes for the television audience - Emphasis on expanding previews and news coverage

FEI TV – Online Video Platform Since its launch in the spring of 2009, the FEI’s new official video website FEI TV (www.feitv.org), which is operated in cooperation with the online video delivery and marketing specialist Perform Group plc, is offering the entire international equestrian community a new, exciting and tailored service.

Horsesport fans from all over the world now have one place to go to be entertained and informed online on all aspects of the sport, the athletes and the FEI disciplines they love.

Although the service has been available for less than a year, the channel has attracted hundreds of thousands of unique users and is thereby clearly on its way to becoming

horsesport’s premier online video destination for the entire global equestrian community and beyond.

FEI TV - Content The platform is offering users frequent and high quality live broadcasts from the world’s most prestigious equestrian events throughout the year as well as a unique, constantly updated and extended back catalogue across all FEI disciplines. In 2009, subscribers to FEI TV had access to more than 150 hours of live broadcasts from approximately 50 FEI key events from around the globe. Coverage included the FEI World Cup™ Finals and the FEI European Championships in Jumping, Dressage and Eventing, the Meydan FEI Nations Cup™ series, events from the HSBC FEI Classics™ and the FEI General Assembly. An equally attractive live package is planned for 2010.

FEI Digital Media – Next Steps In order to reach today’s and future audiences and to be an attractive and competitive alternative in the sport and lifestyle proposition, the challenge is to integrate equestrian sport into the far reaching and relatively new digital environment and to use these opportunities to increase the awareness and popularity of the sport, thus being omnipresent across the various platforms and importantly accessible and userfriendly to these new audiences.

Due to the very dynamic development of digital media, the FEI will continuously reassess and benchmark its approach and adapt its overall strategy and resource allocation where necessary.

FEI LICENSING & MERCHANDISING FEI TV – Online Content Syndication In 2009, FEI TV also joined Perform’s widely distributed E-player platform in order to broaden its audience and attract new target groups. As part of the E-player’s content offering a condensed version of FEI TV with free of charge access is currently available across approximately 350 websites of international newspapers and sport portals, including some iconic flagship names such as the UK’s The Times, The Guardian, The Independent or Spain’s As. A similar version of this FEI TV player can also be found on the websites of most of Europe’s indoor shows.

FEI TV – Next Steps In 2010, while continuing to improve the editorial proposition, the marketing of FEI TV will focus on offering FEI stakeholders enhanced opportunities to join the project, on broadening its portfolio of affiliate partners and on proactively using social network sites to promote the sport and the platform.

End users will see the introduction of a download section and the integration of new applications such as live blogging and the display of real time data streams (such as start lists and results) is currently being investigated. An additional key focus will be the further synchronisation of the channel with the FEI’s campaigning efforts.

FEI DIGITAL MEDIA FEI Digital Media - A comprehensive range of projects FEI’s objective is to use digital media to administrate, promote and market the sport and to successively harmonise and synchronise the various related projects and initiatives to maximise impact, efficiency and benefits.

In 2009, the FEI ran a comprehensive range of projects related to digital media, the scope spreading from implementing the FEI 21 project and operating FEI TV, to the production of podcasts, to cooperating with developers for console games and mobile applications. The 2009 FEI Awards saw the introduction of online voting and the FEI Year of Youth campaign is experimenting with the concept of user generated content.

The objectives of the FEI are to create a meaningful and brand positive licensing programme that will enhance the consumers’ relationship with the FEI and generate additional brand awareness in both traditional and non- traditional environments, as well as create new revenue streams for the FEI. As of today, the FEI Licensing & Merchandising programme is limited to a certain range of products, mainly FEI event merchandising distributed around key FEI events and some FEI branded articles which are distributed by licensees or through the FEI. The current limited range of product categories include a video game (Atari), DVDs (Equestrian Vision), riding gloves (Heritage), dressage tests (print & online licensees), corporate FEI merchandising and a newly developed i-phone dressage application to be launched in early 2010.

The FEI undertook in 2009 a market review of the leading Licensing & Merchandising agencies taking into account past experience in sports Licensing & Merchandising and presence and reach in key equestrian markets. Pending contract negotiations, the selected company will be announced in the first quarter of 2010 and will be tasked with developing a comprehensive catalogue of FEI products across categories.

An FEI e-shop will also be developed and will be accessible on the newly launched www.fei.org as well as guidelines for brand applications on products & packaging.

In order to ensure a successful delivery of the Licensing & Merchandising programme, the FEI Commercial Department will hire a dedicated licensing & branding manager who will work in close coordination with the appointed agency as well as take responsibility for all FEI branding matters.
