Distributing the rider’s weight: Under the rider’s weight the air cushions continually mould to mirror the horses individual conformation and working muscles. This ensures a close, even contact over a much larger weight bearing area and eliminates instances of pressure points.

Cushioning the horse’s back: The dynamic nature of air ensures it works in synergy with the horse’s muscles, rather than the horse’s muscles working against a static medium.

Checking for sufficient clearance

It’s always recommended that you seek professional advice on your horse’s saddle fit, where possible. However, the following information can assist you in not only assessing your saddle fit, but understanding when simple adjustments should be made. In order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of a saddle it is important that the saddle is initially positioned correctly.

Your saddle should bear evenly on your horse’s back, providing a close fit.

Run your hand between the horse and the panel of the saddle to check for even bearing. If your saddle features the CAIR® Cushion System it’s important that a rider sits in the saddle to check the bearing, as the air panels become dynamic under the rider’s weight.

Ensure your horse is standing square and is on level ground. In order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of the saddle, it’s important the saddle is initially positioned correctly. Locate your horse’s shoulder and check to see that the nail of the saddle is approximately three fingers distance from the edge of your horse’s shoulder.

Check that the deepest part of the saddle is central and level to ensure perfect saddle balance.

Sufficient clearance of your horse’s wither across the width and length of the spine should be maintained at all times. Check to see that the channel of the saddle is clear of your horse’s wither and spine through the length of the saddle.

After the initial saddle fit, we recommend that you have the fit of your saddle checked within the first three months, as it will settle in the head during the initial riding period, as is standard with all new saddles.

Following this initial settling in period, your saddle fit should then be assessed every six months throughout your saddle’s life to ensure the saddle continues to fit correctly as your horse changes shape according to its age, level of fitness and work programme.

Checking for sufficient clearance

It’s always recommended that you seek professional advice on your horse’s saddle fit, where possible. However, the following information can assist you in not only assessing your saddle fit, but understanding when simple adjustments should be made. In order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of a saddle it is important that the saddle is initially positioned correctly.

Your saddle should bear evenly on your horse’s back, providing a close fit.

Run your hand between the horse and the panel of the saddle to check for even bearing. If your saddle features the CAIR® Cushion System it’s important that a rider sits in the saddle to check the bearing, as the air panels become dynamic under the rider’s weight.

Ensure your horse is standing square and is on level ground. In order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of the saddle, it’s important the saddle is initially positioned correctly. Locate your horse’s shoulder and check to see that the nail of the saddle is approximately three fingers distance from the edge of your horse’s shoulder.

Check that the deepest part of the saddle is central and level to ensure perfect saddle balance.

Sufficient clearance of your horse’s wither across the width and length of the spine should be maintained at all times. Check to see that the channel of the saddle is clear of your horse’s wither and spine through the length of the saddle.

After the initial saddle fit, we recommend that you have the fit of your saddle checked within the first three months, as it will settle in the head during the initial riding period, as is standard with all new saddles.

Following this initial settling in period, your saddle fit should then be assessed every six months throughout your saddle’s life to ensure the saddle continues to fit correctly as your horse changes shape according to its age, level of fitness and work programme.

C a r i n g f or your Bat e s Saddle Proper care is crucial to maximising the performance of your Bates saddle. It is a natural product and its life is reliant on maintaining a certain level of moisture.

Your saddle should be regularly cleaned, using glycerine saddle soap and a damp cloth or sponge to remove dirt, which may otherwise scratch the surface. Cleaning should always be followed with a rich, wax-based dressing, such as Bates Leather Balsam. We do not recommend the use of oil on your saddle.

Prior to riding in your new saddle, it is recommended that you liberally dress your saddle with Bates Leather Balsam, allowing it to soak in overnight. The overnight process ensures maximum penetration into the leather,

helping to seal in the moisture and protect your saddle. Bates Leather Cream can also be used to replenish and rejuvenate the moisture content in your saddle, however a leather balsam penetrates deeper into the leather and offers a surface barrier, protecting against wear, water and sweat.

Apply your leather balsam or cream heavily in high wear areas, such as the top of the saddle flap where the stirrup leathers will rub. You may apply your dressing to all areas of your saddle that are not suede, including the padded inserts and girth straps.

Treated in this manner, you will achieve the traditional, rich patina of aged worked leather and can expect years of excellent service from your saddle.
