Valentine’s Day... A Memory

hen you are young, Valentine’s Day is either something to look forward to or dread. Well I guess when I think about it, age doesn’t really matter. For me being from Chicago, Valentine’s Day means Massacre, but then that’s only me. I’m not a sentimental person, but my husband is a real romantic. I don’t give Valentine’s Day a 2nd thought because I got married once on that day.... it didn’t work out. I tell him I don’t want anything, but he doesn’t listen. One year I was down cleaning the barn and he had gone to town to do some errands. The next thing I know, a large trailer is pulling up with him following in the car. He get’s out and says “Happy Valentine Honey”, and the trailer doors open, and two Texas Longhorn cows are unloaded. Needless to say I was speechless. He thought I would like

them, and yes, I did, but we really didn’t need them. With my ranch background I consider them “walking lawn ornaments” that have to be fed. I called my lifelong girlfriend in Chicago and had her guess what I got for Valentines Day. She said, “diamonds?, a car?, nice dinner?” I told her “no, I got two Texas Longhorn cows.” There was a moment of silence, then she said “and you’re happy about that?” I have to admit, this was not the kind of gift she was used to. A few years later I got the same reaction from her when I told her I got a tractor. So you see, diamonds may be a girls best friend for a city woman, but here on the ranch, we like to get things that we can use. So anytime there is a reason for me to get a gift, I usually get the tool catalog out and leave little hints. Life has changed for me but for the better. Who needs

his month I am writing a little different story about a young, 12 year old girl, whom I have not yet met. Her name is Beka and her story really amazed me. Beka decided at Christmas time that she wanted to help a family. She and her mother were having a discussion about how things were tough this year for a lot of people and how Beka and her Mom had been in this situation before. Beka found a family that had three children of there own and took in three more! Wow that’s six children! All on her own Beka was able to raise three hundred dollars. I decided to donate a riding lesson for the oldest girl. On Christmas day, Beka brought all the gifts to the family. She was amazed at how joyful it made her feel being able to help a family and has now made it her goal, each year at Christmas, to find a family in need.

The day came when the children came out to the house for the riding lesson and I felt the same way Beka did. It just touched my heart to see those little children have so much fun with GG. I think I got more out of watching them have fun then they did. It seems like all you hear now on the news or in the papers is about crimes. It was so nice to hear about a positive story, a true story! How a young girl found it rewarding to give and help a family in need. We all have so much more than we need. The great feeling it gave me just to have them come to my home and ride a horse was really amazing. I do this anytime I want, but for these beautiful children it was so special, a wonderful day that they probably won't forget. I know I won't, and I also know Beka will not forget either. Beka taught me a great lesson on giving! I hope you will feel the same

Letter to the Editor Hi, Well my day ended light so I picked up a copy of your recent issue. Actually I looked through it twice and noticed a story about a family losing a brother. I read that story and it broke my heart yet cracked me up as how Lance made his family so happy. Then I read the Brahma story. I laughed at parts of that to where I had tears rolling. I was raised on a ranch, never dealt with brahma’s but we had to work carefully around Angus bulls. Of course, they are nothing like Brahmas but while I read the story I felt like I was right there riding with them. What a story. ad a couple warm days after a piece of winter, Thank You, Lord. I might have let a few things slip durin’ the times the fire felt good. There’s a pile of feed sacks to deal with, Thank You Lord, that I am able to care for all my critters. The dogs keep watch and make a good doorbell while keepin’ the coyote out of the chickens. Those eggs are sure good everyday. Thank You Lord, for all my critters and keepin’ them safe... and them old boots.... Got a couple feed sacks full of tin cans, they don’t burn, ya know. We sure do eat good, and have plenty... Thank You, Lord.... and all these boxes... it’ll take a week to burn’em all... there’s the boxes that we get our drinkin’ water. Pure water that don’t mess up the coffee pot... Thank You, Lord... the boxes that my wonderful kids sent us Christmas stuff in... Thank You, Lord.... Now, those coffee cans ain’t trash... I gotta couple buckets full of screws, bolts, nails, nuts, washers and other good stuff to sort out... someday, Thank You, Lord, and the coffee sure has tasted good.... Guess I can toss the oil jugs from changin’ oil in my ole truck that still runs... Thank You, Lord... and them old boots..? Don’t need the old hose full of leaks still layin’ by the new one to water the orchard and garden... and the occaissional stray cow an’ calf that comes by thirsty... Thank You, Lord... Hmmm... a couple busted buckets, plastic just don’t last, a few pieces of busted pipe, scraps of wood from this an’ that, maybe I won’t fix that old chair, it never was much anyway, but... Thank You, Lord... it worked til it broke... and them ole boots.... I got all the stuff I wastn’t burnin’ into my truck... I gotta good old friend with a dumpster open to me.... Thank You Lord... lookin’ in the rear view mirror I saw a truckload of trash... Got me to thinkin’ about my life... lookin’ back.... I ain’t haulin’ around near as much trash in my life as I was before I asked Jesus to forgive me and be my Lord.... I don’t talk trash anymore... much.. I don’t think so much trash anymore... and it all happened without me even thinkin’ about it... my Lord just crowded it out when I started dealin’ with Him honestly.... He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. I’ve had those boots better than thirty years, gone lots of miles... several rebuilds, the heels are run down and the soles are thin again, scuffed up, beat up... but... they will fix up and clean up and keep on workin’... guess I’m not done with them yet... and my Lord is not done with me... ONE NATION UNDER GOD Psalm 130 - A Song of Ascents 1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning. Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. (NIV)

nce upon a time I had a good strong back and could lift any darn thing I pleased and still walk upright when I was done. Wow, where did those days go??? Being older now and definitely much more limited in my lifting and flexibility, when it was time to purchase my forever horse I made the decision to go with a gaited breed. Yes I know, no self respecting cowgirl would ride anything but a quarter horse. Well self respect or not, I did fancy being able to go to work after a weekend of riding. And truth be told I don’t find posting a trot to be all that enjoyable. City girl for my first fifty years I was, and can’t shake it or pretend otherwise. My search for the perfect gaited horse led me to Dream Walker Ranch in nearby Las Vegas, and it’s there that I met my good friends, Matt and Jenn. These two are owners and operators of Dream Walker Ranch, and they too are living a life long dream. Having friends and family in Tennessee, they decided back in 2007 to bring some gaited horses out to Las Vegas to see if there was a market for these exceptional horses. Some five successful years later I would hazard to guess that the answer was a resounding yes! It is from Dream Walker that I purchased my three wonderful hay burners, and I highly recommend them if you seek a smoother ride for any reason. This past Christmas Jenn and Matt took in a beautiful little black gelding that they had sold three years prior to a customer in Florida. Apparently the heat and humidity didn’t suit this little boy. He had been turned out for some time and his condition not monitored, which resulted in some pretty unfortunate results. Black Night had left Dream Walker a beautiful 2 year old gelding full of youth and potential. He came back weathered from neglect and the apparent inability to tolerate the heat and humidity that is so prevalent in Florida. Poor Night was thin and emaciated, and covered with oozing sores on his neck and body. These sores had caused Night to itch to the point of him scratching off his mane and skin. When his owner finally discovered Night’s condition he called Jenn and offered to give him back if they would be willing to bring him back to health. Needless to say Jenn and Matt had him returned to the ranch within days. They consider him a Christmas gift and are thankful to have him back in their care. Night is now on the road to recovery and should eventually return to the beautiful black beauty that he once was. Dream Walker does not just sell their horses, their dream is to find for-

ever homes for these magnificent animals. While not inexpensive, I’ve found my three wonderful forever horses at this ranch. I highly recommend them, as they don’t misrepresent their horses in any way. They allow a customer the time to make a choice without pressure. Anyone who has purchased a horse knows how important, and unfortunately rare, integrity in their sales can be. Matt, Jenn and trainer Christy will match a horse to the rider’s ability, and patiently allow as many rides and visits as might be necessary to determine if the two are a match. Dream Walker has a large arena and nearby trails for testing a potential purchase, and are very patient and honest with a nervous client. That would be me! Their kindness and concern for their horses as well as their customers is apparent with every visit. Don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with Dream Walker Ranch if the purchase of a gaited horse is something that you are considering. You won’t be disappointed! You can find Matt and Jenn at Dreamwalkerhorses.com, or call the ranch at 702 468-0915. I guarantee you will visit the website often to view their horses and drool over them. How do you think that I ended up with three??? As for the plight of little Night, I was just informed today that he has already found a new forever home. Customers visiting Dream Walker this past weekend saw him, rode him and fell in love with him. He is now recovering in his new home in California, and looking forward to a long healthy future. Don’t you just love it, another happy ending! Until next month, thanks again for listening and as always, enjoy the ride!and until next month, enjoy the ride! ■ ____________________

The Grim Reaper

H

e’d ridden hard the last two days. Too hard! The buckskin stallion he rode was the toughest horse he’d ever owned, and even he was showing signs of the hard trip. Sweat streaks coursed their way down his flanks and legs, and he was drawed up some. The fire was still in his eyes, though, and he’d die before he’d quit. He was just that kind of horse. Made tough in a tough land, for tougher work. And that’s exactly what they were doin’ now. Two days ago he’d left Aztec New Mexico and started west on the trail of five men. He knew two personally, and knew of the other three. There wasn’t a real man in the whole damn lot of ‘em. Trouble hunters and bullies who took their strength in numbers, not as individuals. The McCallister twins were just plain mean, with no respect for themselves, or others. Grady Jackson was a coyote from the ground up. He’d look you in the face, but not the eyes, while tryin’ ta figure out how ta steal from you, or stab you in the back. Then there was Allan Taylor and Clint Carver. They were basically good boys, only they followed whatever way wind blew, instead of being strong, and leading. At least they’d been good until four days ago! That’s when they’d crossed over the line of no return. It had been a pleasant, sunny, spring day, and he was sitting in a chair on the porch of his office soakin’ up the sun. A dog dozed in the shade of the water trough over in front of the livery, and the ringing of a hammer on an anvil down at Charlie’s Blacksmith Shop echoed through the peacefulness. I had plans of takin’ Lizbeth to dinner tonight, ‘cause it was her 16th birthday. She didn’t know it, but that dress she’d wanted was wrapped up

and hid away in my office. I’d give it to her tonight! I was thinkin’ on how happy she’d be, when a horse racin’ up the street shattered the calm of the day. Grady came around the corner of the livery at a dead run, on his black and white paint, and slid to a stop in front of my office, covering me with a cloud of dust. “Sheriff, ya gotta come quick,” he blurted out. “One of our hands was shot, and the three that done it stole a bunch of our cows, and lit out. Dad says please come quick. I gotta go get Doc, and get back. See ya at the ranch!” He whirled his paint around, headed towards the Doc’s house, as I sprinted over to the livery and saddled the buckskin. Steppin’ aboard, I headed to their ranch, ten miles away. I wasn’t waitin’ on Grady. I’d much rather get the straight story from his dad. I wished now I’d waited,” the thought came into my mind. The buckskin had a natural ground coverin’ fast walk that was much faster than most horses at a fast trot, and he settled into it now. I let him stay in the walk, ‘cause I didn’t know what the trail might have for me up ahead. I knew I was goin’ after the men who’d stole the cattle, and wounded that cowhand, but I wanted my horse fresh when I did. I also had no idea as to how much of a lead they had. I’d got to the ranch, and Grady’s dad came out, smilin’! “What ya doing, Clint” Light, and set a spell. Vera, git me and the sheriff some tea, would ya please?” “Wait a damn minute,” I said. “Grady just came inta town whippin’ and spurrin’! Said ya had a cowboy shot, and three rustlers took off with some cattle. What the thunder is goin’ on?” I was getting’ a sick feelin’ in the

pit of my stomach, and that was never a good thing. The astonished look on Grady’s dad’s face wasn’t helpin’ either. Then he grinned. “Oh, he was prob’ly just teasin’ ya! You know how kids are. C’mon, and sit down.” Him making light of what his boy had just done didn’t make me feel any better. “No thanks,” I snapped. “Your son better have a damn good reason, Chester. I mean a damn good reason.” With that, I spun the buckskin, and headed for town, with my stomach churning up a storm. Like I said, when that happens, it’s never good, so I put the stud into a long, fast lope and headed for town. Something was wrong here! About two miles from town, Judd from the mercantile store came racin’ at me on a dead run, waving his hat, and shouting. All I could get out of it all, was the words “bank” and “dead”. Slammin’ the spurs to my stud, I went right by him on a dead run, and raced for town. When I got there, I saw a crowd in the street. I pulled the stud down to a walk, and the sickest feelin’ I’ve ever known came rushing over me. I was almost physically sick over it. With dread and fear, I rode up to the crowd, as some of them turned to stare at me. No one said a word as they parted, so I could pass. Tears were flowing from some of the women, as I stepped down from my horse. Then, I saw her! Lizbeth was lying on the ground, in a pool of blood! Doc held her head in his lap, and shook his head “no” as I looked at him. The next two days, I altered between pain, mourning, and hate, to a white-hot rage, then back to numb pain and mourning.

Somewhere in that space of time, I buried my daughter, and got the details of what had happened. After I’d left town, Grady, the McCallisters, Allan, and Clint rode out of the alley down by the bank. Dismounting, they’d gone inside, and at gunpoint, had robbed it. The clerk thought they were joking ‘till Jed McCallister shot him! Then, the manager gave them the cash, and they left. Lizbeth had heard the shot, and had stopped to see what was goin’ on. Clint rode past her on a dead run, and laughed at her. The others rode right over the top of her as they raced away! Jake McCallister had taken the time to shoot her as his horse trampled her young, innocent body further into the ground. Two days later, after the funeral and buryin’, I left town, on the trail. I’d given the judge my badge, as I prepared to leave. “Don’t you think you’ll need this,” he’d asked. “Nope,” I’d answered back. “Where I’m goin’, ain’t no place for a badge, believe me. I rode this trail years ago, before I came here!” As I stepped into the saddle, he said, ”Where’s that?” “Hell,” I answered, then added, “And I’m the Grim Reaper!” He stepped back as I turned to go. Grady’s dad, Chester, rode up just then. “Ya goin’ for ‘em?” he asked. “Yep. Just leavin’.” “Look, I’m sorry ‘bout Lizbeth, but go easy, will you? They are just young men, who made a mistake. See ya’ when ya’ get back.” Reachin’ out with my right hand, I grabbed his throat, and with a look of hate and disgust, I squeezed, as I said, “Chester, I ain’t comin’ back. And neither are they!” (Continued in Volume 3 Issue 9 Mar/Apr)

Baby Zoey

A

lmost 5 months old and Baby Zoey gets to meet her adoptive parents Jim and Nancy Vareberg. Living at the property just next door to the Rescue, Nancy has been asking about a baby burro ever since they moved to Wikieup 8 years ago. When we first picked up Baby Zoey I called Jim & Nancy right away at their part time home in Minniesota, and that same night they said yes to the adoption. Raising a young burro or equine and bottle

Meets Mom and Dad feeding for months can be very expensive, but Baby Zoey was just too cute to say no to. Jim and Nancy arrived at their home here in Arizona in latter January and there have been many changes in Baby Zoey's life and ours. Even though we could weene Zoey from the milk feeding, we are continuing to build her up just a bit more and also to create a special bond with her new owners. Now, weeks later Baby Zoey comes run-

ning when she hears their jeep driving up the road and get pretty excited as they jump out of the jeep with her gallon size baby bottle. While Nancy holds the bottle, Jimmy brushes Baby Zoey to keep her clean and soft. But Baby Zoey is still here at the Rescue, and I have to admit it is a bit heartbreaking when we come around her pen and she kicks up her heals all excited and runs into her little house. She waits by the front outside door peaking through the crank between the doors, waiting for us to open it up and bottle feed her. But instead we just try and keep walking or maybe stop and play with her some. Its time for her to bond with Jim and Nancy, and we don't want to confuse her. But we do get to babysit while Jim and Nancy are gone for the day and now it is a very special treat to bottle feed her. I think it affects Ashley even more than me, she really loves Baby Zoey with all her heart. Its a hard lesson here at the Rescue, to be happy enough to find a special home for our animals, where they will be loved and cared for. But its easier said than done, even though we recieve adoption fees to keep the Rescue going, its still hard to watch these animals we've thrown our love into, leave. One thing for sure though, there

are plenty more animals for us to care for that need good homes. Just a few weeks ago we picked up a whole family of Burros. Mom (Jenny) Dad (Jack) and a young baby boy (JJ), and mom Jenny is pregnant. With horses, goats, and sheep coming in on a regular basis it's never dull. And as crazy as this sounds, by the time this issue hits the street we will have a small heard of cattle, 5 different breeds! They will be part of a new educational program we are designing for the kids that visit our Rescue. Volunteers are always welcome....... Well next month we'll have pictures of Baby Zoey in her new home and keep you informed on how shes growing up fast. Maybe even pics of her 6 month old Birthday Party. If you would like to Help the Rescue Feed Abused Animals just send in you donations to: Sacred Grounds Rescue, POBox 967, Wikieup AZ 85360 or maybe you have some extra fencing, Tposts, lumber, corrigated tin, the list is long but needed. Thank You for being Baby Zoey's friend. Thanks for reading. ■ You can reach us at Sacred Grounds Rescue P.O. Box 967 ____________________ Written by Robert Eldorado

Translates into the Saddle Display strong leadership qualities on the ground before you mount. Your horse will comply in a willing way if the way you ask in the saddle is consistant with the way you asked when you were on the ground. Remember you are alpha mare with two feet on the ground and you remain alpha mare with two feet in the stirrups.

Drive Up Instead of Pulling Back

This can be one of the most profound things to find and execute in your riding. Once you do feel this movement you need to search for it and make it a natural movement for you and your horse. It takes good balance, the understanding of cadence and harmony in movement, which can be achieved by using all your aids as if you were riding in the horse not on top. 1) Relax and let the horse move your hips 2) When you relax your legs will start moving with the back legs of the horse. 3) Use your hands (reins) one at a time in conjunction with the movement of your hips.

4) 5)

See-saw your hands When your right hip goes down lightly engage your right rein - the see of the saw. 6) When your left hip goes down lightly engage your left rein - the saw of the see. As you see-saw your horse into a supple head set his back will round out and his body will become well balanced. This is true collection. Now try to ride him with that suppleness into a different cadence. Feel how your legs move with his movement to enhance the harmony in your ride nd between you and your horse.

Lift, Don’t Pull

When working with your horse don’t pull down and back to lower your horses head or to slow down. Instead lift slightly, curl your wrist for better feel and see saw to lift your horses shoulders one at a time and round his back. Respect and love your horse and enjoy your ride. ■ ____________________ Written by Michaella mwhorsetraining.com
