hen we lived in California Halloween was a big deal. The neighbors in our cul-du-sac would try to compete with each other trying to outdecorate their place. My husband was the king of “themes. So he was behind whatever I wanted to do for Halloween. I’d put ghostly figures in the trees outside our house and let the wind do the rest. Some tombstones, but what I had the most fun with was putting a ghastly looking dummy in a chair by our front door, 3 weeks before the scary night. So anyone who walked by knew it was a dummy. Well on Halloween, the real dummy sat out there with a bowl of candy on her lap. That dummy was me. I hated Halloween, all the kids ringing the doorbells, getting the dogs nuts, having them grab handfuls of candy that was meant to last all night and only lated 2

or the life of me I will never understand why people keep an animal that they either can’t or won’t feed. I was out riding recently and saw these poor horses, clearly starving. What right minded individual could possibly believe that they were doing right by these poor creatures? No hay or water was visible anywhere. My friends and I had come across these skeletal creatures two years ago and called the Livestock Inspectors to try to get something done about their deplorable conditions. My friend even offered to take them home and bring them back to health at her own expense. No way was the response, we love our horses. Really????? The little sorrel colt in the picture is a 3 year old, believe it or not. He hasn’t grown much since we saw him the first time. Back then his hooves were long and curled upward and he was barely walking. Today he was barely walking again, this time due to heat and starvation. Supposedly the owners are “connected and were simply told to keep their horses away from the street so that no one could see them. I did put in another call today to a friend who I hope is equally connected. God willing he can get something done before we ride by and see corpses and buzzards. Yes, hay is outrageously expensive lately. But those of us who ride know that it is a necessity if we are to continue our horse loving lifestyles. And if we truly “love our horses, doesn’t feeding them adequately to Page 2 – Horse ‘n Around the MountainsŽ

hours. Then once the candy was gone we had to turn out the lights and cower in the corner as kids kept trying tot get us to answer the door. So you see. I enjoyed scaring the life out of them when they would reach into the bowl that was on the dummy’s lap to take their candy. I would reach out for them. I got so good at it, using one dummy, then 2 dummies to throw them off, it got to the point where some kids wouldn’t even come up the walk because they didn’t know which “dummyâ€? would grab them. Now we are at our ranch for Halloween. No more candy to buy because there are no trick or treaters. No more decorations to put up because there is no one to scare. The dogs are quiet because we don’t even have a doorbell. I’m sure in town that a lot of people are getting ready to decorate and a lot of little gremlins are buying or making their costumes, and a lot of treats are being put into bowls. And.... I’ll bet some home owners will be cowering in the dark hoping the doorbell doesn’t ring. But you now what? In some strange demented way I miss Halloween and scaring the heck out of the little costumed gremlins, but then again, living in the middle of nowhere does have it’s perks. â–

avoid counting their ribs and vertebrae come with that choice? I understand that our rescues are full and people are cash strapped in these difficult economic times. But allowing an animal to die a slow painful death by starvation still hardly seems justifiable. Are our laws protecting livestock that weak? Is proving a case against a bad owner that difficult? Is being “connected really that powerful? I don’t have all the answers, but have to believe that the answer to these questions is a resounding yes. Thank God there are people out there trying to do right by these poor creatures. You know who you are and I thank you for the job that you do. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has made great efforts to rescue neglected animals like these. In a county the size of Mohave it must be an overwhelming task! I encourage anyone that comes across an animal in poor condition to make a call. Don’t turn a blind eye or assume that no one cares, it simply isn’t true. And if you find it in your heart to do so, donate a buck or two to your local shelter or rescue. Take out a few bales of hay or a sack of grain. It may seem like a small gesture, but if everyone made even a small donation imagine the difference it would make in the lives of these magnificent creatures. ■____________________

Diggin’ up bones.... Along The Way

I

was readin’ the other day about Rockwall, Texas, how these folks were diggin’ up bones of giants. Rumors were some were guessin’ these boys were fifteen or more feet tall. I’m guessin’ if it were so, the Dallas Mavericks would have already been lookin’ to sign up some of their kinfolk. Got me to thinkin’ ‘bout bones. We used to slaughter a calf each year and the meat man would cut and wrap it all up in nice meal-sized packages with labels on them telling us what was in it. Seems like the steaks went first, then the roasts and hamburger, kept buryin’ the liver deep as I could in the old freezer, it was my job to get stuff out for Mom to cook for us.... there was always a few packages of “bones.” My old Red Bone hound, Bruno, really appreciated it when I dug out bones. I don’t know why we got packages of bones, we never ate bones..... but when I found a package of them, I’d give a big bone to Bruno. The first time I gave him one it looked like a knee bone, he took it and buried it out in the yard. He came right back to me and I gave him another chunk of bone.... this one he took and laid in the shade and chewed it all day. Lookin’ back it makes sense to me today. Some bones need buried and others need chewin’ on. I never did see Bruno dig up a bone that he buried. I finally learned after years of bein’ married, some bones are just better left buried, others need chewed on a little...... “bone of contention”.... leave them

buried! “Bone to pick with you”..... sometimes those need chewed on awhile to get things worked out. When we have a bone to pick with someone, we usually jaw about it to friends and family, FB, Twitter, or anyplace else we think will listen to us, just keep chewin’ on the bone rather than doin’ the right thing. The Bible says in... Matt 18:15 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault when the two of you are alone. If he listens to you, you have regained your brother.

One time Jesus’ disciple Peter asked Jesus how many times we gotta forgive someone that gives us trouble. Jesus basically said we must forgive everytime one asked to be forgiven. Forgiving means.... bury the old bone, then leave it buried. When you ask God to forgive you of your sins, He does, because Jesus paid for them for you. I guess ole Bruno forgot where he buried those bones, and, like God forgets yours, you should forget the sins others..... Along The Way.... ■ ____________________

Weed Eaters IV

H

ello Readers! Here we are again to talk about our weed eaters. In the last 3 issues we’ve covered the difference between browsers (goats) and grazers (sheep). We have talked about males and females and the best weed eaters of all called wethers which are a banded male, because they have no issues and just think about eating. We’ve talked about Pigmy goats and Nubien milk goats and the Boer goat for meat. We talked about my favorite, Barbados sheep, a pretty common breed in our area. We even talked about another favorite of mine the Burro, a great all around friend for any ranch. This month as promised we are going to talk a bit about breeding your WeedEaters so you can have cute little baby WeedEaters. There is nothing as cute and lovable as baby goats or sheep. Now keep in mind I do not know it all nor claim to be an expert, infact I have friends I call when I have a question. The normal time to have your babies is fall or spring, mom carries for about 5 months. This is not cut in stone because my own goats didn’t get the memo last year and they began popping out on January first! But generally its fall and spring, leaving a lot of gray area.

If you want to keep your Nubien goats Nubien you need to seperate your goats by breed. Because they will inter-breed, a billy goat will breed anything it can and yes even sheep although it will be stilborn. You might say you don’t care if they inter-breed but if you ever go to sell some of your goats, you’ll find you will get less if they want them at all. Some mixed breeds are excepted for example Nubien and Boer make a good solid breed. But if you add Pigmy to anything but Nigerian your looking to take a loss. There are several mixes that are good but its usaually best to stay with a solid breed. When the babies are born, usually when your not around, they are covered in a protective mucus which mom will clean up almost instantly. She might have one, get it cleaned up and then have another, do the same and after a little break have another. Or mom can just drop all 3 one after another, and then she’s hard pressed to get them cleaned up before they are already trying to stand. Don’t get your hopes up, you may only have one, or maybe two, and sometimes three. I have a few Boer does that always drop three and I

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 New International Version (NIV) (9) Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: (10) If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

A Burro For Every Ranch

T

he title says it all really, the American Burro is a very versitile animal. I get a lot of calls about burros, one of the most common questions is "what is the difference between a burro and a donkey?" Well I've heard two answers to this question. The easiest answer is "burro" is the spanish word for donkey. Many others believe that a burro is the wild version of the animal and a donkey is the domesticated version. To my Dad the word donkey is the very small burros of Mexico. For whatever reason, I call them Burros... The most common burros in Arizona and across the US are the gray Spanish Cross variety. This is the type of burro that runs wild and is collected by the BLM to be adopted out. The facts very, some say Columbus himself brought the first Spanish Cross burros to the US, others say it was the Priests of Mexico. But this Spanish Cross breed can be found not only here but all through Europe, all are gray with the sign of the cross down the backbone and across their shoulders. It really doesn't matter where they came from, they are very special animals. Personally I think everyone with a ranch large or small should have a burro. They are great pets because they have a sensitive personality. The females called Jennys are especially friendly as can be the gelded males. The Jacks however, the uncut males, have a more aggressive nature and have been known to take on mountain lions and even bears. This is not to say you can't have one for a pet, but if you have dogs

Photos provided by Bobby Joe Eldorado

you could have problems. The Jennys and Gelded males however can be extremely friendly to you and yours and still be great watch dogs for your ranch. For example the coyote and the burro are natural enemies and the coyote wants nothing to do with them. Just having a burro on your ranch can keep the smaller troublemakers away. Many people place a burro with their herds of sheep or goats for protection. Not to mention they are just plain good to have around friends. Now if your shopping for a good burro, get one that is already friendly. Burros have personalities too and some can be a pain in the but and really stand-offish. Why waste your time, there are lots of very friendly ones. Prices vary from $150 to $600. The common Spanish Cross burros will be less money. Or if your really lucky to find one, there are the larger dark brown or black burros originally from France. They are absolutely beautiful animals and can be excellent companions. There are also Paint burros similar to a paint horse and Mammoth Burros that are very large boned. Whichever breed you get, consider yourself luck to have such a friend on your ranch. My Dad used to say that the burros were angels looking out for us, just look into that face and you'll know its true. ■ ____________________

Weed Eaters IV (Cont From Pg 3)

have a Barbados ewe that had 4 last year. Mother nature has no rule book, she plays it as she likes. Once those babies are cleaned up by mom and you’ve taken a dozen pictures, they are going to stand up on all four legs and start looking for some milk. That very first drink of mother’s best is the most important, if they don’t get it soon they may no make it. If you have a mom that’s had babies before your probably going to be ok, but if she’s a young first time mom you want to watch over her. I have had mom’s that do nothing at all, I have had them try to clean up the babies but refuse them milk, there have been mom’s I have had to tie to the fence so the babies can come milk. And remember that first drink is life or death to your baby. And sometimes its not mom’s fault, I’ve had to pinch mom’s nipple pretty hard to break the seal so milk will flow out. Don’t panic, I’m not saying you too will have all these problems, but its good to know what can happen so you can be ready. And worse case if you get a bad first time mom you can always bottle feed,You can either milk the mom and bottle feed it to your baby(s) or there is a formula you can get at your local feed store. Most of the time mom does a pretty good job and you’ll just sit back and enjoy your new additions. Everyone has a different idea on when to ween your baby from mom, some say 5 weeks, some wait until 6 or 7, some wait until Mom quits or pushes the baby away. But

after a certain time the baby starts pulling the mom down, personally I’d say 5 to 6 weeks is good on most goats. Once we’ve got them weened we need to talk about their horns. Many people like to burn the horns at about 6 weeks so they will not grow, there is a special tool for that and its called dehorning. I’d like to make a comment here, the goats horns are part of its cooling system, blood flows within, and we are in Arizona, unless your going to show the goat I leave the horns on for the welfare of the animal. One last thing, if you have a male and want to band it you should catch that just after they are weened. On pigmy goats since they are so small anyway you may want to wait a bit longer, depending on size. Well that’s it for this issue, the most important thing to remember is these times is your weedeaters and other animals need lots of water. We live in Arizona! It would be great to have water in a few locations in case one gets knocked over, they need this water to survive. I’d like to thank Lois and all the readers that have called in to talk goats, it was a pleasure. The cute little goat pictured this issue was just born Sept 30th, he is a blue eyed cross between a Pigmy and Nigerian. We haven’t decided yet if he will be banded. You can always reach me at... ■

ell another fair has come and gone. This was a good year, I was able to watch the horse show because, unfortunately, I was unable to ride. It’s amazing what you can learn by watching. Some young people really stood out in my mind looking back at the day. First was my daughter, Lara. Lara rides a 16 hand quarter horse named Quest. Quest is a big kind and beautiful horse, but can be a bit of a hand full when he’s taken from the herd. Lara had started the morning out helping me with my young colt “Peter” and she did a great job for me. Then she got ready to show Quest. Lara brought him down from the stalls all was well until he saw GG and Peter. Lara’s first class being Halter did not go well, Quest became a total basket case! Lara really loves this horse and was really wanting to take him in the class. She led him in and did ok until they had to line up. He wanted back with his little herd. It got ugly and scary for her as Quest is very tall when standing on his hind feet! Well she survived that with a bit of help from Dad.

Now after the Halter she had to saddle him for a Western Pleasure class, you know it’s not good when putting the saddle on becomes a rodeo event. I did not want Lara to take him into the class, You know me “Have fun but keep it safe!!” Not looking real safe at this time. Here comes my good friend Darcy to save the day. I got him saddled she got on and rode him for a about ten minutes and then I sent Lara over to watch, learn and ride. She was able to get on and take him in the class. I was so proud of her there were tears and fears and lots of emotion going on but she was able, with Darcy’s help, to overcome, get on, take charge, and end up winning Reserve Western All Around walk jog 14-over. Lara only started riding Quest a few months ago, She just loves him, it would have broke her heart not to show him after all her hard work. Lara did all his grooming and training herself. She did not give up just because things got a bit ruff. She took some instruction didn’t make any excuses and pushed herself and Quest to victory!!

The next was a young boy eleven years old named Daniel Arsenault. Daniel started riding with me about three months ago and was preparing to show at the fair. Daniel is so smart and polite, a great student to teach. I remember about three weeks after we started I had given Daniel a sheet of paper with a picture of a horse on it with all the body parts listed. I told him I wanted him to study them and I would give him a test the following week. He is the only child that has come back and listed every body part. I’m talking thirty parts all listed and put on the body of the horse. While teaching Daniel he was very quiet didn’t talk very much. I was worried, some of the time, that he didn’t quite understand what I was trying to tell him. The day of the show came and he did so great he won Western Walk Jog All Around 13 and Under Reserve Champion. I learned Daniel understood everything I had said. Wow! I was so proud of him! Daniel had really never rode before and never shown a horse ever! He showed courage, he kept his composure in the ring. It was a pleasure to watch.

I would also like to give Pat Powers a big high five for working with her beautiful mare and overcoming much. Pat rode in western pleasure winning her class after not showing a horse in years, as she always is the one behind the scenes helping her husband, Doug, or her children. Pat Powers is the best horse groomer I’ve ever met. She can take an ok horse and make them look fabulous!! She has helped me a few times in the past with my grooming issues. So the moral of this story is never give up, strive to achieve your goals. Have fun and keep it safe. The weather is getting nice again and it’s time to hit the trails. If anyone is in need of a great place to board their horse, we have two spots open at the moment. We ride out every weekend lots of great trails at the base of the Black Mountains. Have Fun and Keep it Safe!! ■ ____________________

3RD ROPE BAGS ALEC BEHRENDS AND KELLEY GELDMACHER

Now here is an AWESOME group of cowgirls & cowboys!! 2012 Mohave County Fair Gymkhana CHAMPIONS! Outstanding performance by ALL! Thank-you. What a wonderful turn-out for our 66th Mohave County Fair Gymkhana! We had over 50 riders, excited to have a chance to possibly win saddles, buckles, horse blankets, silver show halters and gift cards. Also, if that is not enough to get the riders and their horses hearts pumping, when the final results were announced EVERYONE who participated then had a chance to pick the "Lucky Card" for a shiny Trophy Horse Trailer! Talk about everyone being on the edge of their seats (in the saddle OR in the grandstands)! As with any event that includes our equine companions, there is the risk of possible injury. We did have one very tough cowboy, Jordon Economou, who unfortunately fell off his horse when the cinch broke. Jordon bumped his head and the horse accidentally stepped on him. With his mother, Andrea Economou, by his side and very upset about his well-being, our outstanding volunteers, riders and spectators made sure that Jordon and his mother, Andrea were given a ride to the hospital right away. Their horses were unsaddled, put in stalls with food and water. Constant contact with the Economou family and the fair gymkhana director, volunteers and close friends continued through-out the remainder of the event. Thankfully, Jordon did not have any life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital the next day. Everyone knew that Jordon was going to be just fine when his mother stated, "Jordon was so upset that he did not get to come back and finish the gymkhana because he really wanted one of those neat saddles!"
