(5) The Publisher, reserves the right to make any alteration it considers necessary or desirable in an advertisement and to require artwork or copy to be amended to meet its approval. (6) The Advertiser shall be responsible for checking an advertisement on each occasion that it is published. If the Company is shown to have made an error or inaccuracy in the insertion of or omission to insert any advertisement it shall make a refund or adjustment to the cost of the advertisement at a rate agreed between the Company and the Advertiser. No refund or adjustment will be made if the error or inaccuracy does not materially affect the cost or detract from the advertisement. (7) Cancellations and errors must be notified immediately to our office in writing – no allowance will be made for more than one insertion. (8) The Publisher requires fourteen clear days notice in writing of cancellation, or reduction in the advertisement size, of any order or unexpired part of an order, or in the case of an advertisement which by reason of its position is chargeable at a premium rate, not less than twenty eight clear days notice before the insertion or the next insertion on payment of the difference (if any) between the rates for the series specified in the order and the usual price for the series of insertions which has appeared when the order is stopped. (9) The Publisher reserves the right o increase advertisement rates at any time or to amend the terms of contract as regards space or frequency of insertion. In such event the Advertiser has the option of cancelling the balance of the contract without surcharge. If the Advertiser cancels the balance of a contract, except in the circumstances stated all unearned series discounts will be surcharged. The Publisher reserves the right of surcharge in the event of insertions not being completed within the contractual period. (10) Credit accounts are strictly nett and unless by prior agreement will be pre-paid. If the account is overdue, the Publisher reserves the right to suspend insertions. (11) The Advertiser/Advertising Agency agrees to indemnify the Publisher in respect of all costs, damages, or other charges falling upon the newspaper as the result of legal actions or threatened legal actions arising from the publication of the advertisement, or any one or more of the series of advertisements, published in accordance with the copy instructions supplied to the newspaper in pursuance of the Advertiser/Advertising Agency’s order. In any case where a claim is made against the newspaper or the newspaper is used in litigation the Advertiser/Advertising Agency may ultimately be liable under the terms hereof, notice in writing shall be given to the Advertiser/Advertising Agency, and consultation shall take place before any expense is incurred or the claim is settled or the case is defended or otherwise disposed of. (12) Copy must be supplied without application from the Publisher. In the event of copy instructions not being received by the copy date the Publisher reserves the right to repeat copy last used. The Publisher cannot accept changes in dates of insertion unless these are confirmed in writing in time for the change to be made. The Publisher reserves the right to charge for any additional expense involved in such changes. (13) The placing of an order for the insertion of an advertisement shall amount to an acceptance of the above conditions and any conditions stipulated on an Agency’s order form or elsewhere by an Agency or an Advertiser shall be void insofar as they are in conflict with them. (14) Lineage advertisements must be pre-paid and refunds on cancellations are not given. (15) Refunds cannot be given on cancellations of advertisements which have already been published in any of our publications or on our Internet Website. (16) The Business Advertisement (Disclosure) Order 1977 requires all advertisements by people who seek to sell goods, in the course of a business, to make that fact clear. It is the responsibility of the advertiser to comply with the above Order by using the word TRADE or capital T. (17) Marriage and Engagement Notices must be authorised in writing by both parties to the Engagement or Marriage. (18) Friday-Ad reserves the right to publish advertisements in any of its other publications. FRIDAY-AD is the Trade and Service Mark of the Friday-Ad Group of companies of that name. The Publishers of Friday-Ad cannot accept responsibilty for monies sent to advertisers in response to mail order advertisements. The link between forage quality and performance As the end of the Eventing season nears, our thoughts may turn to Winter activities and our horses spending an increased amount of time stabled. Stabling increases exposure to respirable dust including mould and bacteria naturally found in hay and most types of bedding. While is is particularly difficult to control all dust, careful management can ensure it’s limited as best possible.

that in 72% of all horses the presence of different types of fungi in the airways was present. One of the main causes of IAD is respirable dust, which is plentiful in hay. The presence of IAD has a really negative impact on the athletic horse’s performance and is an issue that really needs addressing. Removing dust particles from forage
Forage makes up the largest proportion of fibre in the horse’s diet and is an essential part of their nutrition. The quality of hay and haylage varies across the country and throughout the seasons, often being very weather dependant. One thing is consistent there is a link between poor forage and respiratory problems. Even good quality forage contains high levels of respirable particles which can cause Inflammatory Airway Disease.
IAD is a respiratory disease that affects horses over the age of one. Coughing, poor performance and mucus discharge are common symptoms, although may not always be prevalent. It is caused by the harmful moulds, fungal spores and bacteria that live in your horses bedding and forage. I studied photography formally almost 30 years ago. I began working full time with horses 15 years later and found them truly majestic creatures who were simply beautiful to photograph. By applying and adapting concepts used in the world of fashion I went about creating a style that would befit the anatomy of the horse. This of course had to be fully mobile and repeatable. By using artificial lighting and backdrops I create a studio environment on location placing light sources such to accentuate highlights, shadows and contours. This results in highly realistic and dramatic imagery that lends itself to printing and displaying as beautiful wall art. I really enjoy meeting the horses and owners. Every horse is different and it often takes some patience to ensure a calm and safe setting. Some show initial hesitation to accept the equipment but with careful consideration to their responses I work at their pace to have a calm and happy subject. I put great importance on the horse appearing natural and relaxed whilst not bored or disinterested. Allowing the horse to show just the right level of engagement is key to achieving the most beautifully striking results. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so rewarding to witness owners reactions to the completed portraiture of their most trusted companions and the happiness that a photograph can bring.

Hickstead is the place to be this winter! Hickstead may be best known as the home of British showjumping, but now it’s THE place to be for event riders – thanks to the launch of their fantastic new arena cross-country training facilities.

The huge all-weather facilitiy is the biggest and best training ground of its kind in the South, and it’s been a huge hit with riders since it opened last month. Olympic eventers Pippa Funnell and Gemma Tattersall have been among the first riders to use the new facility, with Gemma describing it as an ‘incredible arena’. There’s also been loads of great photos and videos from riders of all levels, who are sharing their experiences of visiting the site using the hashtag #HicksteadSchooling. The venue comprises two vast allweather arenas, connected with an all-weather track. The Equine America Arena is a massive 130m x 70m, while The Airowear Arena is 90m x 60m – plus there’s the adjoining Equine America Water Complex. There are around 60 fences, ranging from 80cm in height to 1.10m, and fences will be regularly rotated to keep the course fresh and varied. There’s a wide range of single

fences and combinations, with plenty of skinnies, corners and arrowheads, and the water complex is a huge draw, with several jumping options into the water and within the lake. A number of leading eventing experts have assisted with the creation of the new facilities, including Badminton course designer Eric Winter, who oversaw the plans for the initial project, and Olympic course designer David Evans, who was consulted on the design of the course. A visit to Hickstead is the perfect way to focus on your winter training and practise your cross-country in the runup to the eventing season. A number of leading trainers, Riding Clubs and branches of the Pony Club have already opted to host clinics at the venue, with discounts available for group bookings.

Preparing your HORSEBOX FOR WINTER
As we head into the winter months, horses might be taking a little holiday and riders might be spending more time at the yard rather than on the road. Whilst any downtime will provide some much-needed R&R for horse and rider, think of the implications this may have on your horsebox. 36

Horsemart Equine Quality director Candice uses her EQ truck all year round, if not for travelling to shows but to go training or to take the truck to viewings. If you are not regularly using your horsebox, Candice recommends it gets run at least every two weeks. Not just turned on either, driven around in, horseless if necessary. This can help prevent the brakes from seizing up. Think about where you will house your horsebox – a muddy patch or damp grass can rot the chassis and also makes it harder if you do have to move it. Ensure your levels of anti-freeze and it’s strength are satisfactory – you may need to top up several times over the winter or add some more to increase it’s strength during a really cold snap. To prevent a water leak – drain the water from your tank. Top up enough to meet requirements if you head out with horses but drain again afterwards. If water freezes overnight during a really cold snap, the ice can damage the pipes leading to cracking and leaking. Gas bottles should also be turned off. The toilet tank should also be emptied. Have a clear out of your cupboards – damp, muddy clothes stuffed in a drawer could lead to mould and bad smells. The emergency digestives should be taken out – you don’t want to entice mice! Whilst on the subject of damp – if your lorry has a hook up you can run the heating at least once a week throughout the winter. This will help to prevent damp from building up. You can also put a dehumidifying gel in the living and cab to absorb excess moisture. Clean out the horse area! Urine and droppings can damage the floor. In fact, clean the whole lorry. A thorough clean without the time constraints of getting ready for a show can highlight any minor repairs. Get these done over the winter so they don’t become big problems when you come to use the truck more in the spring. Make sure your tyres have at least 1mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre in a continuous band around the whole tyre. (1.6mm for horseboxes 3.5 ton and under). Ensure they are of good condition, free from cracks and at the recommended tyre pressure. Keep the outside of the lorry clean and free from leaves settling. Rotting foliage can damage the paintwork, windscreen wipers and lead to rust. EQ are based in Sussex and offer a full valet service. Whilst it may be tempting to clean your bridle in one piece, dismantle it into separate parts to ensure a thorough clean and to check that all fastenings and attachments are in working order. Pay particular attention to the condition of the leather on your reins, as this is likely to become worn more quickly than other areas on the bridle, especially if you do not use rubber grips. Ensure girth straps and stirrup leathers are fit for purpose and check for cracking and stretching. Stitched leather can often last longer than standard leather, as it does not stretch in the same way. Where possible,

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE It is good practice to clean saddles and bridles after every use to remove salt and grime found in sweat, all of which can damage leatherwork by cracking 42

brittle, so keep an eye on the forecast. Always allow leather to dry out if has becomes wet during use, then remove mud, grime and sweat with warm water and cleaner before allowing it to dry clean, away from direct heat.
STORAGE Storing your tack properly is vital to maintaining its appearance and condition. Sit your saddle on a saddle rack above ground level to help preserve its shape and always hang your bridle from a peg. Always remove your girth from both sides of the saddle to avoid stretching and minimising damage to buckles and straps. This practice will also help to avoid permanent creasing to leatherwork. Saddle covers and bridle bags are a practical investment as they protect from dust, debris and scratches. Choose natural fabrics which will allow the leather to breathe, rather than plastic sheeting which may cause it to sweat. Avoid damp atmospheres for storing tack as this will encourage the growth of mildew. Mould can wreak havoc on your tack so regular cleaning will help minimise this risk. If you do find evidence of mould, clean all items outside to avoid spores circulating your tack room. Similarly, keep all Winter 2019
