HELLO AUTUMN! Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Horsemart Magazine.

As we head into September the longer days and hotter temperatures are coming to a close. After the hot summer your beloved horse is going to welcome the cooler air at first before their routine starts to change.

We are starting to think about prepping for autumn and so we have teamed up with Hadlow College this month to help you with your autumn preparations. They bring to us their best advice on gradually changing your horses routine including feeding habits and living conditions. Head over to their double page inside to start preparing your horse for the autumn.

Also inside this edition, we have decided to take a closer look at the history of one of the most popular equestrian products in the industry - The Horsebox! The horsebox is the main mode of transport for moving horses and most in the equestrian industry will use one at one time or another. We have taken a look at how this product has changed from 1771 until the modern day.

(2) While every endeavour will be made to meet the wishes of Advertisers, the Publisher does not guarantee the insertion, the position, or the colour of any particular advertisement. (3) The Publisher does not accept responsibility for any loss or damage caused by (a) an error, inaccuracy or omission in the printing of the advertisement: (b) for any failure to publish an advertisement on the date or dates specified b the Advertiser: (c) for the publication of an advertisement on the date or dates specified by the Advertiser whether the actual date be earlier or later than the date or dates specified: and/or in respect of any loss or damage alleged to have arisen through delay in forwarding or omission to forward replies to Box Numbers to the Advertiser, however caused.

(4) The Publisher reserves the right to omit, suspend, or change the position of any advertisement, even if it has already been accepted for publication. (5) The Publisher, reserves the right to make any alteration it considers necessary or desirable in an advertisement and to require artwork or copy to be amended to meet its approval. (6) The Advertiser shall be responsible for checking an advertisement on each occasion that it is published. If the Company is shown to have made an error or inaccuracy in the insertion of or omission to insert any advertisement it shall make a refund or adjustment to the cost of the advertisement at a rate agreed between the Company and the Advertiser. No refund or adjustment will be made if the error or inaccuracy does not materially affect the cost or detract from the advertisement. (7) Cancellations and errors must be notified immediately to our office in writing – no allowance will be made for more than one insertion. (8) The Publisher requires fourteen clear days notice in writing of cancellation, or reduction in the advertisement size, of any order or unexpired part of an order, or in the case of an advertisement which by reason of its position is chargeable at a premium rate, not less than twenty eight clear days notice before the insertion or the next insertion on payment of the difference (if any) between the rates for the series specified in the order and the usual price for the series of insertions which has appeared when the order is stopped. (9) The Publisher reserves the right o increase advertisement rates at any time or to amend the terms of contract as regards space or frequency of insertion. In such event the Advertiser has the option of cancelling the balance of the contract without surcharge. If the Advertiser cancels the balance of a contract, except in the circumstances stated all unearned series discounts will be surcharged. The Publisher reserves the right of surcharge in the event of insertions not being completed within the contractual period. (10) Credit accounts are strictly nett and unless by prior agreement will be pre-paid. If the account is overdue, the Publisher reserves the right to suspend insertions. (11) The Advertiser/Advertising Agency agrees to indemnify the Publisher in respect of all costs, damages, or other charges falling upon the newspaper as the result of legal actions or threatened legal actions arising from the publication of the advertisement, or any one or more of the series of advertisements, published in accordance with the copy instructions supplied to the newspaper in pursuance of the Advertiser/Advertising Agency’s order. In any case where a claim is made against the newspaper or the newspaper is used in litigation the Advertiser/Advertising Agency may ultimately be liable under the terms hereof, notice in writing shall be given to the Advertiser/Advertising Agency, and consultation shall take place before any expense is incurred or the claim is settled or the case is defended or otherwise disposed of.

(12) Copy must be supplied without application from the Publisher. In the event of copy instructions not being received by the copy date the Publisher reserves the right to repeat copy last used. The Publisher cannot accept changes in dates of insertion unless these are confirmed in writing in time for the change to be made. The Publisher reserves the right to charge for any additional expense involved in such changes. (13) The placing of an order for the insertion of an advertisement shall amount to an acceptance of the above conditions and any conditions stipulated on an Agency’s order form or elsewhere by an Agency or an Advertiser shall be void insofar as they are in conflict with them. (14) Lineage advertisements must be pre-paid and refunds on cancellations are not given.

(15) Refunds cannot be given on cancellations of advertisements which have already been published in any of our publications or on our Internet Website. (16) The Business Advertisement (Disclosure) Order 1977 requires all advertisements by people who seek to sell goods, in the course of a business, to make that fact clear. It is the responsibility of the advertiser to comply with the above Order by using the word TRADE or capital T. (17) Marriage and Engagement Notices must be authorised in writing by both parties to the Engagement or Marriage.

(18) Friday-Ad reserves the right to publish advertisements in any of its other publications. FRIDAY-AD is the Trade and Service Mark of the Friday-Ad Group of companies of that name. The Publishers of Friday-Ad cannot accept responsibilty for monies sent to advertisers in response to mail order advertisements. DIARY OF EVENTS ADVERTORIAL

Ideally, we keep our horses turned out as much as possible but as daylight hours decrease, grazing depletes, the ground becomes poached and gate ways muddy, horses will inevitably spend more time in their stables.

Ensuring a clean stable environment is essential for both the competition and leisure horse. There should be adequate access to long stem forage, clean air and as little dust as possible from forage and bedding.

Stable ventilation is key for general air quality and dust minimisation and should result in 5 changes of air per hour. While all stable designs are different you can still ensure all air vents are clear, windows are open (where possible) and look to see if there are any adaptations you can make to the design to improve air flow.

Stable dust is comprised of many particles; however, it is the respirable dust (particles less than 5μm in size) that cause the most significant problems. Firstly, when they are this Autumn 2019

small, they hang around in the air for a long time; spores of 5 µm fall 0.1 cm per second. Secondly, they have a 50% chance of being inhaled deep inside the lungs and cause airway inflammation and ultimately respiratory disorders including Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) and Severe Equine Asthma (SEA) also known as COPD, broken wind or heaves.

The main sources of respirable dust are from conserved forage (hay and haylage) as well as bedding of various levels depending on type.

Installing Haygain’s revolutionary sealed one piece, rubber flooring system, ComfortStall, allows you to use considerably less bedding (50-75%) which inevitably puts less dust into the stable.

Dry hay can generate 932,090 Airborne Respirable Dust (ARD) particles per litre of air, the average horse has a mean tidal volume of 5 litres so your horse could be inhaling 4.6 million ARD particles in every breath while their nose is in the hay! Although haylage is

lower in ARD than dry hay, it can still contain 4500- 8800 ARD per litre of air.

The traditional treatment of soaking hay and haylage to reduce the dust, while it does make the dust less airborne, is counter-productive on several levels. Soaking leaches nutrients, increases bacteria, produces a polluting post-soak liquor, uses vast amounts of water and is messy and laborious.

To minimise exposure to the dust from forage effectively, both and hay and haylage can be steamed at high temperatures. Haygain hay steamers are scientifically proven to reduce respirable dust by up to 99%, kill bacteria, mould and fungal spores using a unique and patented method.

I studied photography formally almost 30 years ago. I began working full time with horses 15 years later and found them truly majestic creatures who were simply beautiful to photograph. By applying and adapting concepts used in the world of fashion I went about creating a style that would befit the anatomy of the horse. This of course had to be fully mobile and repeatable.

By using artificial lighting and backdrops I create a studio environment on location placing light sources such to accentuate highlights, shadows and contours. This results in highly realistic and dramatic imagery that lends itself to printing and displaying as beautiful wall art.

I really enjoy meeting the horses and owners.

Every horse is different and it often takes some patience to ensure a calm and safe setting. Some show initial hesitation to accept the equipment but with careful consideration to their responses I work at their pace to have a calm and happy subject. I put great importance on the horse appearing natural and relaxed whilst not bored or disinterested. Allowing the horse to show just the right level of engagement is key to achieving the most beautifully striking results.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so rewarding to witness owners reactions to the completed portraiture of their most trusted companions and the happiness that a photograph can bring.

We care about horsesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; health and soundness and have much experience of helping horses to a better life, especially after injury or surgery. We have much experience in correct and functional rehabilitation that has lasting benefits.

We take in many ex-racehorses that have been over-used for racing and are injured and in poor condition and we do all we can to give them a better life. We also help others, who are in need of help with their horse, whether it be a thoroughbred or otherwise. They all need the same consistent work that does not push them well outside their comfort zone but helps to increase and build their strength and soundness.

Above is an example of an undernourished racehorse that came to the centre straight from the track, lame and with a sore back. After better feeding, careful rehab work and gentle strength building schooling, here it is looking a much healthier happier horse. This is not difficult to do and can be achieved by all with the right help and good basic management.

Buckinghamshire Animal Spine Practitioner Highlights Importance of Musculoskeletal Maintenance in Horses An animal spine expert from Buckinghamshire presented her findings on chiropractic therapy at a national event to highlight the importance of skeletal maintenance.

Lucy Goodright, a working committee member of McTimoney Animal Association, who specialises in chiropractic, mobilisation and soft tissue techniques, researched the effects of McTimoney practices on the musculoskeletal tone in racehorses, due to the exercise demands of such equine athletes. As only one of seven scientific studies accepted for presentation at the annual conference of the Saddle Research Trust, the findings were a pivotal step in helping horse owners to understand the benefits of using such treatments on their animals.

Before training as a McTimoney therapist, Lucy worked as a freelance rider and groom, and was hired as an exercise jockey for Lawney Hill Racing in Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire. During this period Lucy was exposed to the power, fitness and physical demands required of racehorses and once trained in McTimoney chiropractic, Lucy was eager to research the effects of such methods on horses. The aim of the research was to accurately assess and compare the influence of manual chiropractic treatment on both the left 20

and right-hand-sides of the muscles of the back, on racehorses in training.

Spinal manipulation using chiropractic techniques aims to improve joint function and the symmetry balance of a musculoskeletal system. Research into the effects of this nature of manipulative technique on horses is limited and therefore presented a perfect opportunity for Lucy to carry out such investigation. Using pressure algometry to calculate musculoskeletal responses – a method to measure the sensory nervous system’s response to pain or discomfort using physical pressure – Lucy was able to discover the effects of using chiropractic methods on a horse’s spine.

Returning to Lawney Hill Racing, Lucy investigated the effects of McTimoney on several of the yard’s racers. Sixteen horses, all in similar training, were selected to take part and were split into two groups of eight. Grooms helped by holding those used in the tests, trotting them up for veterinary inspection to make sure they were sound before being worked on.

HORSES SALE AUTUMNFOR PREPARATIONS The horse’s feeding routine and nutrition will also change. They may no longer have access to 24 hour grazing, so sufficient forage must be provided on a daily basis. Any grass which is still available may begin to lose some of its nutritional value, but also be aware that laminitis is still a risk at this time of year. Some paddocks will experience what nutritionists call the ‘autumn flush’, where warm weather and rain combined with cold nights can lead to excess water soluble carbohydrates being present. For horses prone to laminitis, consider strip grazing, track systems (if there is available land), and avoid turnout or restrict grazing when night temperatures are below 5°C (40°F), followed by sunny days.

Older horses may lose body condition at this time of year, so the horse’s weight needs to be regularly monitored. This monitoring of weight is an activity carried out by our students, and every Hadlow College horse visits our weighbridge on a regular basis and the weight is recorded, allowing us to see seasonal changes and any potential early problems. Concentrates might need to be reintroduced, or increased

HE, FHEA, BHS SM/IT So the long, hot summer finally comes to an end, and going into autumn we are faced with dropping temperatures and darker evenings as the seasons change. At the College, September also means new students, and as part of their course they learn about the horse’s daily routine, but also the changes that this time of year can bring about.

The first consideration is that autumn often leads to changes in your horse’s routine, and, as always, any changes in routine should be done gradually.

Your horse may have been living out 24/7 over summer, but may now need a gradual transition to stabling to allow them to physically and mentally get used to their new environment.

The introduction or increase in feeding hay should also be done gradually.

Remembering that hay is harder to chew than grass, this is a good time of year for your horse’s routine dental check.

Just because the horse is now living in more, don’t neglect your field. Some poisonous plant life is seasonal. In the UK, September to early November is acorn season. All acorns are poisonous to horses, but green acorns particularly so, due to high levels of tannic acid, which creates lesions in the small intestine. A single acorn won’t affect your horse, but large amounts eventually lead to kidney damage and death. In 2010, a surplus of falling acorns led to the death of 30 ponies in the New Forest. HORSES FOR SALE AUTUMN PREPARATIONS cracks, cuts, bites or similar, causing an infection and subsequent immune response. This all leads to the classic symptoms of scabs, discharge, hair loss and heat, swelling and pain. The answer is to keep the horse’s skin as clean and dry as possible. Barrier cream may also help pre-turn out; however, despite every effort, some horses may suffer regardless. Treatment initially involves removing scabs. This can be painful for the horse and may need to be done under sedation. The next process is washing the affected areas, commonly with some form of disinfectant such as chlorhexidine or iodine. Following this the affected area needs to be dry (I’ve even used hairdryers on horses’ legs to help with this – similar to clipping, introduce this slowly, and remember to use a circuit breaker). For aftercare, there are a variety of useful creams and lotions than can be used. In severe cases, your vet may recommend antibiotic treatment.

Finally, whilst the horse’s winter coat will eventually come through, it is worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast for the cold snaps that can come at this time of year. Over-rugging and the subsequent over-heating of the horse is a common problem, but conversely, sudden overnight drops in temperature need to be addressed as well. This is particularly relevant for those horse and disposed of, and ideally, oak trees

Sweet Itch

Approximately five per cent of equines in the UK suffer from sweet itch. It results from hypersensitivity against salivary antigens from biting midges (Culicoides) and, to a lesser extent, the larger Simulium equinum, a member of the black fly family.

The horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immune system overreacts to the proteins in midge saliva causing it to attack its own cells.

It is a common and well-described seasonal allergic dermatitis that was between March and October, but now it can be from as early as February and continue as late as December, reflecting the presence of insects, it can affect almost any horse, pony or donkey regardless of breed, type and age.

Intervention should begin as early as possible in the season - the climate appears to be playing havoc with our seasons, and our milder and damper winters are allowing the midge breeding season to start earlier.

SYMPTOMS Typically, sufferers can be observed excessively rubbing and scratching the mane, tail, withers, head, back and belly, or in severe cases the whole body. The skin will become thickened and rigid if this pattern is repeated yearly and the risk of secondary infection is high.

PREVENTION It is widely documented that there is no cure for sweet itch; the only true prevention is to completely eliminate the insectsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; contact with the horse 32

Prevention is better than cure so it is important to start protecting your horse before the midge season starts, once the horse has been bitten and reaction starts then controlling the condition will be more difficult.

There are a few things you can do that include keeping your horse stabled at dawn and dusk.

It is worth investing in a good sweet itch rug (not a mesh fly rug), these are specially designed to fit different shapes and types of horses and give complete coverage of the body, neck, tail, and under belly. They should fit well and be comfortable as the horse will need to wear it all the time.

A highly successful form of prevention is the genuine Boett Blanket (available from The National Sweet Itch Centre, www.itchyhorse.co.uk which offers maximum body coverage. Recommended by many Vets and even covered by many insurance companies on the alternative therapy part of their policy.

It’s all in the design Owning three large destructive horses, and seeing that traditional timber shelters just didn’t work for their little herd or them. This husband and wife team set out to find a solution to all their problems.

The couple set out to design a shelter that was not only going to be practical for all equines but for all other livestock to use too, from Alpaca’s, Goats, Sheep and Cattle.

They also wanted to create a shelter that blended in with its surroundings without having an impact on the county side it sat in.

With this thought they looked at it’s shape. How could they make something to cope with everyday use, but also with the ever changing weather with more storms happening each year. looking at other countries and seeing how they had overcome this design fault that traditional shelters had. ideas were discussed and eventually they found something they could work from.

So the Equi HUT was born with it’s super stylish curved roof that allows the wind to sweep over and by having the open ends stops the wind from getting trapped. By stopping the lift means it can’t blow over, making them 100% storm proof.

The Equi HUT has a great feel to it with some great design ideas like their Walk thought HUT. When asked WHY a walk though?

“We wanted to make a shelter that allowed free movement and the only way to create this was to have both ends open. The benefits from having an opening at both ends greatly reduces stress and injury as it eliminates the fear of being boxed in, as you know horses are flight animals and by having a clear exit worked really well”

The Equi HUT is a truly unique looking building. It has been well thought out, by using a strong galvanised steel frame makes for a super strong safe building for all to use.

It has a well designed skid system that is welded together, this means when moving you do so without damaging the building, this will allow it to be towed from paddock to paddock, cutting down time and money as no need to buy a shelter for each paddock now or get a team in to dismantle it and rebuild it.

HISTORY OF THE HORSEBOX The horsebox is the main mode of transport for moving horses from one place to the other. The modern designs we see nowadays are a far cry from what they looked like when they were first designed. Here we look at how the horsebox has changed over the many years since it was designed.

1771 was the first known instance of a horse being transported by land, this was the vanning stud of the Great British Thoroughbred racer, Eclipse. A carriage was purposely constructed making this the earliest recorded occupant of a horse trailer.

The motorised van for conveying horses was designed in 1902 but it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until 1912 that horse boxes fitted to internal combustion motor car chassis began to be mass produced.

1771 The Vincent motorised horsebox was three tons and very similar to todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horse vans. These were the models used by the British army in 1914 to take the horses to war.
